HI, I just came across your posting for 'Nelly' Derbyshire. I am researching the Debyshires and Samuel is ,I believe , the brother of my ancestor Elizabeth Derbyshire. I'm afraid I cannot help with Nelly as I just found her and was wondering who she was. My initial idea was that maybe she was the daughter of Clara Derbyshire who was still at home in 1911..... Just a thought.
faeriedi

Nelly Swales Derbyshire / Eileen Vera Walton - Blackburn / Whalley Clitheroe

I have a side branch to a my tree that includes a family of Derbyshires from Whalley, near Blackburn. I found them on the 1911 census, but Nelly appears to be adopted. She was 5 in 1911. Her parents were Samuel Derbyshire and Mary Elizabeth Haydon. They had several children, among them Clare, who was 29 in 1911. Nelly might have changed her name to Eileen Vera Derbyshire, and she was a music teacher by the time she married - a George Walton, in Clitheroe around 1935, I think. I have been told by another member of my family (a distant cousin) that her mother was called Sarah Wood, who married James Swales - but that Nelly was the illegitimate daughter of the son of a wealthy Derbyshire Cotton miller. As of yet, I can find no mention of a Sarah Wood being married to James Swales, but I am waiting for further information.

If anyone knows anything, please contact me.

Best wishes,

Clarissa

Hi there,

I have a query too, and you might be able to help me!

I am trying to find the identity of Nelly Swales Derbyshire, who was adopted by the Derbyshire family who lived in Whalley not far from Clitheroe. I think Nelly changed her name to Eileen Vera Derbyshire at some point and married Clarence Walton in Clitheroe in 1935. The story is that Nelly / Eileen was the illegitimate daughter of a local Lord of the Manor and a local servant girl, and was left on a doorstep and bought up the Derbyshire family.

This being taken as fact, I started to see if there were any Swales families in the Clitheroe area, and this is what bought me to your thread here. I had searched some of the lancashire parish records and found that there were Swales people around Clitheroe too.

If you could help me with anything, please let me know - I can't find a birth certificate for this person and therefore don't know what her true identity was.

Thanks,

Clarissa

Gidday Bill, I see you have a William Swales in East Yorkshire. I have a Robert B:1809 in Sutton and married in Swine in 1833 to a Mary Brown. He had a brother William Swales B:25 /09/1805 in Cottingham, and I have him marrying a Elizabeth Brown . Maybe be they are related. There father was Bartholomew Swales and Ann Waites. I don't know if there is a connection, but you would think they are related in some way.
Cheers
Kerry

Thomas and Martha (listed as Mary on the manifest) Swales emigrated in 1888, aboard the Cunard liner Umbria. They arrived in New York 18 June 1888. With them were their children Sarah, Mary, Catherine and John (6 months old). Three other daughters and a son were born in the USA.

You can find a tree for them at my Swales website:
http://swales.us/personal/familytree/ChristopherSwales

This is not my Swales line (yet), but one of several with a Thomas Swales who emigrated from North Yorkshire to the USA around 1890, including my own great great grandfather.

Regards,

-steve
I tried once before to trace the Swales line but gave up defeated. However I did receive many emails from living members who seemed as confused as I've been as to whitch line they came from. So good luck with all your research.
Regards
Trish

Tom,

I have information on Thomas Swales and Martha Robinson and their ancestors which are related to me. I will be happy to compare notes. Not sure, however when Thomas came to the United States. Your Thomas is my second cousin 5x removed. Our ancestors go back to Christopher and Sarah Pierson Swales. They were from Brotton, N. Yorkshire. His son, George Swales had a brother named William Swales b. 1755 and married to Milcha Leng. Your Thomas descends from William and I descend from George.

Let me know how I can assist.

David Swales

Hi, Patricia,

I see that Thomas and Mary seem to be somewhat confused about their age in the census records, but I suspect your Thomas was the one born in Stokesley in 1850 to Francis and Elizabeth (nee Stephenson) Swales. They had a large family, with several of the same names as your Thomas and Mary... Christiana, James, Margaret, and Thomas. Christiana (Thomas' older sister) married James Grainge, and in 1871 (and possibly 1861), her brother Thomas Swales is living with them. Christiana and James also used many of the same names for their children, including Charlotte.

I suggest you get a copy of the marriage record for Thomas Swales and Mary Ann Kelly from the GRO. It will probably list his father's name and occupation. They were married December quarter 1873, in Stockton, Durham, volume 10a, page 280. It should also list their age, and give you another data point.

There were quite a few Thomas Swales born right around the same time and place. Another of them was my ancestor, and I've researched a few of the others. I'm making notes about yours, and will be interested to hear what you learn.

Feel free to contact me by e-mail (steve@swales.us).

Regards,

-Steve Swales (in Sunnyvale, California, USA)
Thomas Swales born 1851-4 Stocksley or possibly Guisborough.Married Mary Kelly and lived in Coxhoe from 1881 onwards. I can't trace Thomas before this as dates and places don't seem to match. They went on to have at least 10 children including my grandmother Ellen. I know there are many Swales from this area but wonder if anybody recognises this particular family.
Many thanks
Patricia

Hi Jenny

Only just seen your post and it's November already! Apologies for it taking so long to reply. I'd be interested in finding out more from you. Since my original post I have done quite a lot of work and know that my line goes thus far back to Hannibal and Hannah Hall. I dont have an Albert Swales but all my relatives are Hartlepool and surrounding area/villages including Stokesley, Stockton, aycliffe, thornaby, Easingwold, New Malton, Kirby Moorside, Gainford and probably a load more. We can correspond at emma.swales@btinternet.com

I"m trying to trace a cousin Ellen Swales, who was born in 1896, the daughter of Alonso Beaumont Swales. In 1921, she married Samuel H. Dakin, in Camberwell, England. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Joan. Samuel died in 1927, so I suspect Ellen may have re-married. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

-steve (in Sunnyvale, CA)

SWALES - Yorkshire Ironstone to Pennsylvania Coal

My Swales ancestors came from North Yorkshire to North East Pennsylvania in 1891. I've recently found that a large number of family made the same migration, from the area around Brotton/Skelton/Guisborough to Peckville/Blakeley/Olyphant in Lackawanna County, between 1885 and 1895.

I'm interested to hear from and share stories with other researchers whose families were part of this min-migration.

I'm specifically wondering if there was some sort of active recruitment going on, or if there was simply a word of mouth escalation of immigrants looking for a better life. Anyone know?

-steve swales (in Sunnyvale, CA, USA)

A friend of mine is helping me research my family ancestry and alerted me to the fact that you had posted something on the internet (I think he has also posted a message), albeit a long time ago now, so maybe you've lost interest. Fanny Lupton was my great aunt (my grandfather's sister). My grandfather was Philip Lupton. I'm particularly interested in tracing back my grandfather's ancestry because my aunt always used to say that there was a Spanish woman in the family and I'm curious to find out who this was.

I see it has been nine years since you posted your query. If you read this, please reply. Marjorie Restler Moore was the daughter of Dorothy Swale, sister to my grandmother, Gladys Swale. There were 10 girls, no boys born to Emma (Ridley) and Arthur Swale, of Windsor Twp, Fayette County, Iowa. I know the story of Marjorie's birth and the entire Swale genealogy. All 10 Swale daughters are now gone. I believe Marjorie's half sister is still living and possibly a half brother. My mother, who died in Feb. of 2008, attempted to help Marjorie's family learn about her birth mother and her ancestors and now I wish to help any of you wishing to learn about this. I am also in touch with Marjorie's son.
