Janet Swan c1830 Edinburgh

Hi
I'm digging into my Mums sidee of the family and following the Swan connection.
However a bit of a mystery has arisen, someone claims that Janet Swan c1830 was born to parents George Swan & Alison Banks. This seems a bit weird since they had 3 children prior to this all born between 1814 and 1818.
Janet was supposed to of have married a Alexander McPherson in 1851. She had a daughter by the name of Jane Swan born abt c1849.
So why is there a 12yr gap...can't find a birth line for Janet, as possible she may of been born out of wedlock and either had 1 parent that as George being the father or Alison being the mother.
Would anyone be able to clarify this?

This would be very useful, Amy.

I think gradualy asmore and more folk in Britain start to get their heads around what DNA testing can do for them, we will start to gradually uncover links to continental Europe going back over many centuries.

We will need more DNA samples from France, the Low Countries, Denmark, Sweden and Norway - many immigrants into Britain came from these ocations over the past 2,000 years and DNA will eanbe us to gradually get at that.

Happy to work with you and your brother to explore the Zwann surname in Holland as any expertise I possess wi permit.

Look forward to seeing what test he has performed - I am presuming it is a 37-marker STR Y-DNA test at FTDNA, unless I hear differently. He shoud definitey submit his profile of 37 markers to Ysearch - unless he has already done this.

Best regards

Brian

My brother's name is Richard Stoner. Our maiden grandmother's father emigrated here from Holland as a Zwann. Once here he changed his name to Swan. My brother's was not analyzed through Ancestry, most likely FTDNA. I will try to contact him for more information this week.

Amy

Dear Amy

Definitey maybe.

It is not clear to me under what surname your brother has had his DNA tested. Also I am assuming this is a Y-Chromosome DNA test - but I just need confirmation this is the case.

Is this with FTDNA or Ancestry?

I don't have much insight into the Dutch surname Zwann being angicised into Swann in America - but this is quite common with folk emigrating from many European countries into the USA in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Best regards

Brian

Hello,

I was just browsing on-line and discovered that someone is selling an old photo of the "SWAN Homestead" - with people standing in front of it. On the back of the frame it states that the home was located at 89 Cambridge St., Winchester, MA.

I do not have any connection to anything being sold on-line, so this is just an FYI for researchers:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Historic-Photo-of-The-Swan-House-Win...

It is near the Winchester Country Club on one side and the Mystic Lakes on the other side.

I continue to look for a picture of the old "HUTCHINSON homestead" which possibly stood from 1700's. It was written by a family member that it was a very nice house where .society. from Arlington would come to visit. It burned down sometime around 1880.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards)

P.S. My ancestors were Jacob and Eliza (CROSBY) HUTCHINSON from ~1850 to 1890's on 18 Ridge St., Winchester. Eliza's brother was the John S. CROSBY who owned the large CROSBY (market) Farm in Arlington. It was on Mystic St., Arlington, which is just down the street from where the SWAN Farm was in Winchester.
(Rt. 3)

For some reason I had not been able to find it through ancestry.com. I got some important missing family info from the obit.

I haven't started chewing on the good stuff you sent me yet, as I had to handle some other things.
I just found this posting now. Thanks for replying to my inquiry. Have you been able to find a lot of Swan newspaper clippings? Hope I didn't swamp you with the ones I sent. There are plenty more but I didn't want to take away from your fun of discovery!

James Swan 1896-1851 (my 3rd gg) and Eliza Brown did have the children you list. George G is my 2nd gg. While I have multiple sources for George G and Mortimer, I have nothing on James 1821-1843 other than those dates, which came from someone else's public tree, with no source citations.

In regard to your other posts on James Delos Swan, I have no record of the middle name "Delos" in any of my data. Sadly, I have no middle names for anyone in my direct line further back than my grandfather, George Floyd Swan, grandson of George G.

I will be happy to share any info I have on my Swan line, and am very interested in the newspaper articles you mention. Would you like to trade invitations to view each others' trees as Guests, with living persons restricted?

Regards,
Dick Swan

I am searching for more information about James Swan, born probably in New York to James Swan and Eliza Brown. His brothers were Mortimer and George G and he had a sister, Sarah Jane. I have found newspaper articles about his accidental death in
Byron, Ogle, IL while visiting his parents, brothers and sister. What it doesn't mention is if James had a wife and young son. I am trying to determine if James D Swan born 1839 in Madison, Ohio was his son? Our family stories are that JD Swan's father died when young and JD ended up living with uncles which were lawyers and judges in Ohio. I appreciate all help in this search!

I know that William's wife was Rachel Brown, born c. 1769, daughter of William Brown and Sarah "Sally" (Long?). Two of their children were Parmelia who married William Glass and William B. I know there was at least one other son whose name I do know now. I believe him to be my great great grandfather; I have been searching for his name for 40 years at least. He married Esther "Hetty", possibly Trimble (not sure of her last name).

He had a birthday there and other celebrations. I asked my father about it and he didn't think we were related to them.
Yes we do. There is a Swann DNA Project at FTDNA and I am the co-administrator.

On its own a DNA test will not tell you that much - it is the power of comparisons that it is all about.

I suggest you email me off-list at:

bps@norvic8.force9.co.uk

And we can work through what is involved.

I assume you are in the USA?

hey actually my grandmothers middle name was definetly Anna not Ann. She was named after her mother Grace Anna Learn. Silly thing was a few years before she dies she found her birth certificate. i don't know if it was an original or copied it said her name was Anna Leone not the other way around. It really wierded her out. She said why had she never known that. We my mother and I thought it was funny. nothing shows up like that everything in her name is Leone Anna. I believe I may have found my Bieber family leading from Alsace but I can't find Charles Lasker on any free sites on WorldConnectonProjects. I only use boards I don't have an a paying account. I know my father's cousin David's wife has a picture of Uncle Waldo's store. I say it for about five seconds at the last family reunion my dad did. I am trying to look back from Issac Levan Bieber in 1795, i have 1791 but the other ones have all info such as Elizabeth Levan being his one of his wifes. I believe Issac's mother was Margaret Levan some one else is spelling as Le Van and say they were from france. I know that Elizabeths grandfather was on the ship Pink which was a ship that some Bieber I think came in on to Philedelphia. I was wondering if his mothers family was related to his wifes family. Do you know who Charles Lasker Beiber's father was. For some reason I thought it was Lewis Levan Bieber but I am not sure. i think there was a brother and a son named this to Issac. Will keep trying and will be diving into my papers to get the answer. I finally cracked my Swan heritage to actually the mayflower. i actually am related to Degory Priest. I also thought people who said they were ancestor of the Mayflower were always sounded very snotty. i was never going to say it unless I was able to prove it. My mom side wasn't on the may flower but my direct ancestors brother John Howland was. I think it funny that my direct ancestor Governor Prence who was governor of Plymouth after Bradford put his son in law in jail because he married his daughter. I think they even had children when he did it. His daughter Elizabeth went over to the enemy and married a Quaker. he of course was fined for seeing her first but didn't do what he said he would do which was stay away from her. Well Quakers don't believe in any courts but there own so swearing in the Purtian courts that he would not see Elizabeth again held no weight with Arthur Howland Jr. lol
