Swan/Swann from Carmegrim, Portglenone, Antrim, Northern Ireland

Hi,
I have started researching my Swan line, I am after information prior to my ancestor Alexander Swan (b 1828) arriving in Australia in 1856. He came with his wife Margaret Gault (m. 1849) and first born Matthew (b 1853) from Portglenone, Antrim. In 1853 Alexander and Margaret lived in the town of Ballynafise.
His father was John Swan/Swann, Carmegrim, Portglenone, Antrim.
I have Alexanders marriage records and and the baptism of Matthew as Portglenone, also John his father is listed in the Tithe Applotment Books 1825 - 1901, but no birth or baptism record of Alexander or Margaret Gault for that matter. I have been told the Swans were from Durham County and Yorkshire County in England and after a big family fall out ,one branch going to Ireland and adding the extra "n" to the name.
I had a short report done on the family and it is possible John Swan (b 1795c) had 2 brothers with him in Ireland, George and James. From a copy of the Portglenone Griffith report of 1860c they owned their land at Carmegrim. I have also been told that, from the County Durham/Yorkshire part of the family, some migrated to the States and also to New Zealand. Can anyone relate to these branches of the Swan family. Any information would be much appreciated and I am happy to share what I already have.
Diane

My first message to this Bulletin Board.

Special interest in the early Swan Families of Virginia and Maryland, especially the key gateway ancestors William Swan of Swann's Point, Virginia (d. 1638) and Edward Swan of Maryland (d. ca 1707). Some considerable information on both of these gentleman, probable English origin of William Swan established at Shipbourne, Kent, and working on Edward Swan in Kent. Also have long-standing interests in some other Swan Families in Kent and especially Norfolk;/East Anglia where my own Swan/Swann Family line comes from. Thirty plus years experience of research in the UK - as that is where I live.

The inscription is as follows: "James S. Swan, Sr. d. 20 Sep 1865 aged 62 yrs, 4 ms" and "Jane Taylor Swan, d. 22 Jul 1894 aged 76 yrs, 10 mos, 25 days."

The 1840 Champaign Co. OH census lists two other Swan men in the county other than James Swan -- a John Swan in Adams Twn and a Charles Swan in the town of Urbana. Both men are 30 - under 40. It is possible these are James S. Swan's brothers or cousins. I do not know what his father's name was, though as mentioned above, there was a man aged 60 - under 70 living in James's household. This could be his father.

I have another small piece of info passed to me by Stephen Ahlfeld, from a journal written by Ethel Sager Magill in 1969. Ethel's grandfather was Jeremiah Samuel Sager and her grandmother Rebecca Ann Taylor, Jane Taylor Swan's sister.

She says, and I quote: "Henry Taylor’s parents came from England. Ruth Ellen’s came from Pennsylvania. Henry Clay Taylor and Ruth Ellen Hodge were married in Nov. 1810."

She also lists the following dates:

"Father – Henry Clay Taylor – born 1787 died 1845
Mother – Ruth Ellen Hodge Taylor – born 1791 died 1868

l.Son – William Taylor born 1811 died in late 1840
2.Daughter – Elizabeth Taylor died 1876
3.Daughter – Jane Taylor born Sept. 17, 1817 died 1894
4.Son – John Henry Taylor born 1819 died 1895
5.Daughter – Rebecca Ann Taylor born Jan. 25, 1822 died 1890
6.Son – Thomas Henry born Nov. 1831 died 1889
7.Son – Samuel G. Taylor born 1833 died 1878
8.Daughter – Caroline Charlotte Taylor born 1835 died 1881"

---

This is all the information I currently have.
William Albert SWAN, NYC born 1875

My family history includes a William Albert SWAN.

Going backwards from 1930 Census, William, born in NY, lived in Crawford, NY (Ulster County) with wife, Catherine (KRAUS)(age 55), born in NY, and their 4 year old granddaughter, Catherine SMITH. They were ages 23/24 respectively when married first. [Katherine often had spelling variations, but was also known as Katie, Kate and Catherine.] Williams parents were both born in New York; Katherine's parents were both born in Germany. Her father was KRAUS, mother HEBLECH.

In 1920 William and wife Catherine (KRAUS) appear with 5 children; William A (b ca 1900, age 20 in the 1920 Census), Kathleen (born ca.1902, now 18), Jessie (b 1903 - my gmother- then 16), Albert, (b 1905 - then 14), and Harry (b 1907 then 12) [Harry's middle name according to SS Application was SHAW, his father's mother's maiden name] .

In 1910, William is Head of Household with his family that was the same as above PLUS little Francis who was 4 months old (and subsequently died before the 1920 census).

The family seems to drop off the map between 1880 and 1910!

They were solid Bronx residents.
Can anyone make a connection or help me with this?

Note: In the 1880 Federal Census, Albert SWAN and wife Mary SHAW are noted in the Bronx. They have son William who is called William Jun, son Henry S (believed to be Henry Shaw SWAN), and Susan. Family information shows these members are part of the family, but there is only speculation at this time which will connect them.

Am willing to share all details.

THANKS SO MUCH!

Surnames: SWAN / SHAW> HEBLECH> KRAUS > ANTONELLI/ANTONIELLO >WHEELER> HUNTER/GREENWALD

I am an African American man trying to find out some information on the Swans from Alabama and Mississippi. My family is recorded in the 1870 Census in MS. It is believed that they came from Alabama after the Civil War. In the 1870 Census there is a Dan (great great grandfather) Ella (?) and Wash (great grandfather). Any additional information including slave records would be greately appreciated.

Stephen SWAN Farm, 1800's Winchester, MA
Hello. I have a strong interest in the large, HUTCHINSON Farm, in what is now Winchester, MA (1700's to 1900's). And, I have read that the "Winchester Country Club" was built on the land of the HUTCHINSON Farm. But, I just read the "brief history" of the Club and around 1902 it was built on the "Stephen SWAN Farm."

http://www.winchestercc.org/club/scripts/public/public.asp

I was wondering if someone could tell me the exact location of the Stephen SWAN Farm ~1900.

I grew up on the HUTCHINSON Farm, and then in Arlington, so I know the area. And, I'll guess the SWAN Farm was either on what is now Hutchinson Road, or it was on the original Mystic Street (which runs between Arlington and Winchester).

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

I am desperately looking for my Great Grandmother.

Alice Swan, b Illinois <1867>

The 1880 census shows a 15 year old Alice Swan working as a servant in the household of A. R. Downing.
Alice married my Great Grandfather, Daniel Cort in 1886 in Admas Co., Ill.

The 1900 Missouri census shows a Laura & Daniel Cort or Coart, with the children I know were Daniel's. Could Alice have died and then he married Laura? I know they moved there.

Old family records indicate her name really was Laura Alice Swan. But then why did not the newspaper announcement of their marriage show Laura as her first name?

WI in 1895, Waterford (Racine Co.) in 1900, still single, and in Athens (Marathon Co.) WI in 1905 with wife Ella, age 29. In 1900, date of birth listed as Feb 1852, in NY, and his father was born in Vermont and mother in NY.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Dr. C.
I am looking for information regarding the parents of John Swan born 27 April 1823. I have seen a copy of his baptism at CityArk website and his parents were Richard Swan and Mary.

According to census info on Ancestry Richard and Mary were both born in 1791 in Rainham, Kent - I can't find their birth records or marriage on CityArk or the IGI.

Any help would be appreciated - I'm really stuck with this one.

Thank you.
Karen.

swan/hartwell/vantine connection

I am trying to find the connection of Samuel Swan who resided in Somerville, NJ in early 1800's. He was Sheriff of Somerset County for a while, he was then elected to Congress, representing the Somerset County area. I believe he died about 1844. He was also a medical doctor and practiced in Bound Brook, NJ as well as Somerville. His daughter Eliza married Thomas Hartwell, an attorney, also of Somerville. Now, what puzzles me is my g grandmother's name was Aletta Swan Vantine Mundy, and one of her brothers was named Thomas Hartwell Vantine, all of the Somerset County area and during the same time frame. Why would the parents give a middle name of Swan to one daughter. and first and middle name of Thomas Hartwell to one of the sons unless there was some connection to the doctor/congressman's family, or the attorney's family? Anyone have any info or ideas? Thanks for any info you might have.
F. Mundy

Hello - I keep running into family trees that show Joseph Swan being married to a Ms. Hamilton. These trees also show her being the mother of his children Elizabeth Grace, George Laury, William C., Alex C. and Erasmus. I am afraid there is a large chance this is wrong. All you have to do is check the U.S. Census.

Joseph Swan was married to Susan J. Lippitt, daughter of Dr. John R. Lippitt and Mary Jane Cox Lippitt.

I know this because Mary Jane Cox of Buckingham County, VA was my ggg-aunt which makes all down the line my cousins.

Shirley Cox Schroeder prairefyre@sbcglobal.net

The first record I have of Robert is marriage to Mary Crane in 1724 and land record from 1733 in Dedham, MA.
Folklore from a handwritten account of this Swan family written by Mary Swan Jones in 1901 states that Robert came to America at the age of 12 and lived in the household of Esquire Bigelow.
Swan, Watson, Ripperdon in Corydon, Indiana

Interested in finding any Swans still living in Corydon, Indiana who may be connected to my line. My grandfather was Ward T.. Swan (Swann) who lived in Corydon. He was born in 1867 and also is listed as Thomas Warder Swan. I don't know why the confusion in his name, but his tombstone says Ward T. Swann. He first married Meda Mae (May) Crecelius in Corydon, In. and they had a son Archie Ward Swan born 1890. He moved in later years to Tacoma, Washington. My grandfather and Meda Mae were divorced supposedly because he wanted to move to Missouri and she did not. Archie went with his dad. Meda then married Isaac Sonner. Grandpa had a sister named Lavinia Swan Watson, Corydon, In. Grandpa had siblings named James, Mary, Charles, Minnie, and Sarah. He died here in Kansas City, Mo. in 1959. I have always wondered if there are any distant family living there still. I have visited and just love the town of Corydon and wonder where he and his family might have lived. Would love to hear from anyone with anything. Also, it appears his father was John J. Swan and mother was Elizabeth Ripperdon. His grandfather was Julius C. Swan and Grandmother Sophia Hayden. This info mostly came from Dixie Creager Ward from Graham, Texas.

Swan- Wadsworth - Jones

I am searching for information on this Wadsworth family. Daniel Wadsworth married Elizabeth Johnson in Bibb County, Georgia on 05/29/1827. Daniel later married Jane Frances Hodges in Bibb County, Georgia on 02/10/1848. I believe Daniel and Elizabeth had a child named Matilda/Mathilda in about 1849. Daniel and Jane Frances may have had a son named Hiram Wadsworth in about 1868 in Alabama or Georgia. Jane Frances may have later married a man named Swan and then some time later married a man named Jones. Any assistance in tracking information on Daniel, Elizabeth, Jane or any of these individuals is greatly appreciated. I am glad to share what I have. Many thanks in advance, Tena

Have posted here a long time ago, but thought I would try again and see if there might be some new connections.

I have a Martha Swan, b. Tyler Co, (W)Virginia, about 1826. She grew up and married (John McCann) in Tyler, and after John's death moved to Guernsey Co, Ohio. I have been attempting to find out who her parents were - thru process of elimination, and some 'guesstimates' I think it could be a Roland and Susan Swan, but have not been able to prove it.

If this ties in with your lines, or sounds familiar, please contact me.
Bonnie
