I am decended from Richard Swan who's father according to the Bio of Georgr Perry Swan was a Charles Swan. I do not believe there in enough substantial evidence making Charles the son of Samuel Jr. I would really like to chat about your lineage and see how we connect. I have two potential marriages for him. Cecil is with a Leona in the 1930 census. In Fern Maria (Fletcher) Swann's 1965 Santa Cruz, CA obit, Cecil is listed as her husband.
Hi
Thanks for the response.
I have met some of them, when I was at the reunion in 1977.
My enquiry is really aimed at trying to find descendants of any of James' siblings, as he was one of at least 7 children. One, Charles, is believed to have also come out to NZ; another son, John, went to Troy, New York around 1855. In all my years of researching, I have never located any descendant, and thus still look for more information about their family life in Ireland from 1820s-1870s.
Also, if you know any more about any of James's 12 children, please feel free to contact me, as there are some childrens' family members that I still have not located.
Regards
Stephen
email: s.schollum@clear.net.nz

Thanks very much Rosalyn. Just give me a couple of days and I will come back to you. I have worked on this Swann family, off and on, since 1998 - and although I am following a PDF file given to me by Lena Swann Cusce - I am still finding some Swann lines missing from it. This is no criticism of Lena, who does a very methodical job.

This happens to be one of these lines, as the document mentions the marriage of Joseph Swann, son of Aquilla Swann - but no indication of a second marriage - from which there are large number of Swann descents, as you know only too well.

Are you in touch with a living Swann descendant from Aquilla Swann (1751-1800)?

We will probably need to carry on the exchange by email - as I will need to attach some files. It seems probable now that we can sort through all of the Swann lines which descend from Edward Swan of Maryland once and for all, but these really are quite numerous, as some lines have been particularly prolific.

FL and died in Green County, GA. His son Samuel Arch Swann went from Calhoun County, FL, to Jasper County, TX, after 1850. I have lots of info on this line.

Dear Anne

I would be pleased to exchange what information you have on the Swann families in Caswell County. These families presumably come from Thomas Burch Swann (1753-1832). I will only have looked at Census Returns, etc. - not any original research in the USA I'm afraid, but we now have a very good genetic signature for this branch.

Hope to hear from you

Brian

I am not familiar with any of the Coleman family. Did they live in Yanceyville? Also, for the sake of clarity, I need to ask if your Swann was of African heritage. The John Swann that in 1910 lived with Benjamin and Alice Poteat (likely former slaves of the Poteat Family of the area), has been listed as "black" and "mulatto".

That is the only Swann I am currently aware of. I have not specifically looked for any so far though. I instead looked at who lived near where he was (on the census page), to get an idea of who might have known whom. I will do some looking though.

Richard :-)

I can probably help sort the answer to this question. There is a Mary Lou Swann (1889-1965) who marries a L. E. Poteat. He dies young in 1913 and she remarries.

She comes from the family of Edward Swan of Maryland, so I think with a bit of mutual exchange of information we can probably sort out who he is. She was born in McDoell County, NC.

Hello, this is a little late in posting. but I do find all of this interesting and I thought I would post this information. While I don't have any information that will help, I did want to share what I have. I am in Cullman, Alabama and my mother was a Swann. Her Great-Grandfather was James "Jim" Swann. His brother was Henry Swann (not your Henry), his son was named Walter and Walter's son was named Ernest.

Here is where it gets fun and interesting! Granddad Jim was one of about 10 boys and 5 girls. Their mother's (Scott)family moved to Ark and Eastern Tx some time around 1880 or so. One of the sister's also moved out there. So the boys were out in that area alot. Granddad Jim and my grandmother was married around 1900 (my great grandfather was born 1901). But before they married he was engaged to a girl out there, but she died before they could get married. It has always been family lore, that the Swann boys might have had families out there during their "wild days out west".

I just found the names connection interesting!

The Williamson and Swann links I had referred to were noted in the late 1800's/early 1900's census reports of Yanceyville, Caswell County, NC. In the home of Benjamin Poteat and his wife Alice [Williamson] Poteat, they were almost surely slaves of the prominent Poteat family until emancipation. (If this does not apply to your research, there is little need to read further.) In 1910, 2 young men listed as living in the home of Benjamin and Alice, were John Swann and William Gunn, as "hired hands" (presumably) on their portion of the Poteat tobacco farm. This same John Swann later moved to Tunstall, VA and lived literally next to Swann's, Poteat's and Gunn's. Will Williamson lived with the daughter (Katy) and son in law (Weldon Gunn) of Alice and Benjamin Poteat in Tunstall, VA as well.

John Swann (b. 1889) was living with Benjamin Poteat and his wife, Alice Poteat in Yanceyville, NC. Alice's maiden name was Williamson. Her (Henry Williamson) father lived a few houses away from them on Milton Road.

John Swann was 21 years old when he was living at Benjamin and Alice Poteat's home; working as a (according to the 1910 census for Yanceyville, NC) "hired hand". Also living with Ben and Alice Poteat at the time, was 20 year old Will Williamson, a nephew of Alice [Williamson] Poteat.

My challenge, is to figure out how the Swann family is connected to the Poteat's and Williamson's. A William Gunn also stayed with the Poteat's for a period. (Weldon Gunn later married one of Ben and Alice Poteat's daughters.)

In 1920 Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, VA, there is a John Swann, also mulatto, also born in 1889 in NC, living with now his wife (Lizzie) and family. They are right next to Gunn's, Swann's, his Aunt Thenia(?)[Swann] Johnson, and a Sallie Poteat!

Too much for coincidence.
Richard Martin

I have a complicated mystery trying to place the connection of a John Swann (b. 1889, NC) who lived with another relative in 1910, Benjamin and Alice Poteat in Yanceyville, NC. John Swann was listed as as "hired hand" at age 21 living in the household of the Poteat's. (A William Gunn (age 20) was also living with the Poteats as a "hired hand" in 1910.)

In 1920, a John Swann, also mulatto, also born in NC, and also born in 1889, is living with his Aunt, (unreadable first name, could be "Shenia") Johnson in Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, VA. That's 183 miles or so from Yanceyville, but in the span of 10 years, not inconceivable to travel. In a nutshell, there are Swann's, A Poteat and a Gunn family all living next to each other.

Ben and Alice Poteat's daughter Catherine (Caty) married a Weldon Gunn in 1883 in Yanceyville.

Danville is right across the border from Yanceyville and Milton, and I was recently told that the marriage of my maternal Great Grandfather Andrew Willson Scott to Alice L. Scott (the Granddaughter of Benjamin and Alice Poteat, mentioned above), was a marriage arranged by the families. Andrew was born in Rockbridge County, VA, and I don't know how he ended up in Yanceyville to marry the much younger Alice L. Poteat. From there (1912 Yanceyville), they went to Milton/Semora by 1917, on to Cunningham in Person County, and then to Ohio for some unknown reason.

So, there it is. I am trying to figure out how all these families were connected. If any of this sounds familiar to you, please let me know!! this part of my family is still has many big mysteries for me.

Thanks,
Richard Martin

He is too young, but...

There was a John Swann that stayed with part of my Poteat family in Yanceyville, in 1910. He was a farm "hand" on the farm of Benjamin Poteat. I have a John Swann in Pittslvania Co, VA, in 1920, but he was born in 1889 NC, so his not the one you seek. This John Swann was listed as mulatto, and I have not looked for a father for him. He is listed in 1920 as the nephew of the widowed head of house, a Mrs. Johnson. I am finding a link between GUNN, and SWANN, and WILLIAMSON, and POTEAT between NC and VA.

What I am getting at, is that perhaps there is a possibility that this John might be related to "your" John Swann.

With regard to your Freedman reference, all of the above were listed as mulatto or black. Let me know what you think.

Richard Martin

Hi Lilly
My Gt Gt Uncle Robert Swann (1784-1862) had a son Robert who was born circa 1827. They both appear on the 1841 Census at Market Street, New Mills, Derbyshire. Gt Gt Uncle Robert was a Chelsea Pensioner so he must have had a long army career. I haven't found his Military record so far but his children were born in the East Indies, Scotland, Ireland & Devonport England (from the '41 '51 & '61 censuses) so I guess he was stationed in all of these places.

I believe that his son Robert Swann (born c 1827) attested on 18 Nov 1846 with the Royal Artillery Regimental No. 2538. He gave his birthplace as New Mills which was where he and his family lived, although he was actually born in Ireland.

He served as a Gunner & Driver for over 21 years (6 of them in Halifax, Nova Scotia) & was discharged on 31 Dec 1867 at Liverpool.

I believe I have him on the 1861 Census at the Royal Artillery barracks in Woolwich, Kent aged 34. He was married to Martha J (born in New Brunswick) and they had a 7 month old son Robert Darius (born Woolwich Q Sep 1860).

After this I lose track of him. He may have died in Q Sep 1879 in Chorlton, Manchester but I can't confirm this.

Do you think this could be the same person as your Robert Swann? If so I'd love to hear from you Lilly.

Best Wishes
Jeannie

Hi,
I am interested in a Robert Swann born New Mills, Derbys. about 1828, his age varies on returns.

He served with the 10th batt. Royal Artilliery and in 1862 I believe married Ellen Maria Radcliffe in Stockport dist.

A son Joseph Swann born the same year in Dover and daughter Ann Jane abt 1868 in Birkenhead dist.

The family appear to be at 7 Windsor Street, Toxteth, Liverpool in 1871c with Robert's occupation as a Porter.

By 1881 they seem to be at 6 Baron Street, West Derby all details are the same apart from Robert now being called 'John Swann'. Dgt. Ann I believe died in abt. 1873. Son Joseph had left home he later married Charlotte Poatt and lived in the Greenwich area.

If anyone else has an interest in this family I would be very pleased to hear from you. Thanks Lilly

I'm sorry, but the Calmes line is my only connection to the Swann family. So that is the only Huguenot connection that I know about. I did a Google search on "Margaret Dumas Huguenot" and came up with some interesting links. You might take a look at that.

I see that you may have this information already, but my connection is through Harriett(e) Neville Calmes Swann, the sister of my ggg grandfather William B. Calmes (m. Nancy Elizabeth [Betsey] Berry). Many of the lines in the French Huguenot Calmes family have Revolutionary War connections, but none that I know of who immigrated as early as the Swanns may have. If you'd like more Calmes information, I'd be glad to give you what I have.

Dear Sam

Well - we are in business. I have John Thompson Swann (1775-1867) and with his family comes his daughter Jane Swann (b 1828). There are always minor but irritating errors in terms of spelling - difficult to tell how much those are transcription errors on Ancestry's part or correspondents' part sometimes. So I have Harriet Calmes and not Harriet Clames and Samuel Gardiner and not Samuel Gardner.

Like you, the major sources have to be Ancestry and general internet sleuthing if you are based in England - but there is a wealth (probably) of Courthouse material in the USA which can be explored and is usually not that well indexed. Of course fires can affect these records through history.

So if you want to send me an email to:

bps@norvic8.force9.co.uk

I can then attach what I have right now. Essentially we have an established DNA signature of William Swan of Swann's Point out to 67 markers and we can extend that to 111 markers if we have to. We are having it Deep Clade tested as far as it is possible to go right now.

I believe I know where William Swan was baptised in Kent in 1587, based on circumstantial evidence. And I am embarking on a long-term project to see if it is possible to trace any of his relatives in that parish of Kent down to the present day. If we could do that - we would get as near absolute proof as is possible of the hypothesis of his origin.

Meanwhile, you might have to settle for becoming a member of the Jamestowne Society, which is what I am working on with another Swann correspondent.

Let me know where you live in America when you reply.

I have done family history since 1967 and was instrumental in getting FTDNA to sponsor the DNA Area at Who Do You Think You Are at London, Olympia, since 2009.

Dear Sam

We will need to do a bit more mutual exploring before I can answer your question. What I am saying is that we now have increasingly good data for the descendants of Thomas Swann of Nansemond (1670-1704) down to the early 1800s. That still needs to be refined, but I am working with someone else to try and get him accepted as a member of the Jamestowne Society, and all that this requires in terms of documentary proof.

The names Samuel Swann, Thomas Thompson Swann and Thompson Swann are quite widespread in several branches of this family, and I have not (yet) tried really seriously to determine how many branches of this particular Swann surname clan reach down to the present day.

My message was more targeted at Madison Donaldson Swann post - whom I am pretty sure I could help. If you would like to post more information on what you know about Samuel Swann, where he lived and died and the evidence you have for the dates in your post - we can see if I can help.
