Herbert Edward Swanson - victim of Winecoff Hotel fire

Hi,

I am looking for any information about Herbert Edward Swanson who was a victim of the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta, Georgia on December 7, 1946. I believe he was born around 1908 because he was 38 years old at the time. He was from Chicago, Illinois and was an editor for a trade paper. I'm writing a book about the fire and wanted any information I can find including surviving relatives to interview.

Thanks so much!

Chet Wallace

We were in RI last weekend and got to meet Victor Josephson Bood's granddaughter (89 years old). She is the daughter of Carl Bood, so we got to see a wedding picture of her parents, Carl & Hulda Bood. She had given me some info about mostly Victor Bood's descendants, but also of some of the other brother's.

I would love to see any info that you have to fill in the gaps. We do have info about your great-great-grandparents, Joseph Svensson Bood & Christina Charlotta Johansdotter. They are the parents of my ancestor Claus Bood Swanson & your great-grandfather.

FYI, a sister of my great-grandfather (Claus Swanson- aka Klas Josephson Bood) & Victor Bood was Josefina Bood, who was called Aunt Fina. She never married and lived in the basement of my great-grandfather's home. According to Victor's granddaughter, Aunt Fina wasn't right in the head and rarely came up from the basement.

Hi Annie,
Great to hear from you again. I was wondering where you live. I am actually in Rhode Island this weekend for a family gathering and hope to make it to the Historical Society center in Warwick to work on genealogy. I am hoping to hear from Gary's cousin (I think) Nancy Lofgren Swanson. I live west of Chicago. Karyn DeVault

Looking for anyone who may have information on my greatgrandparents listed in the subject. They were both born in Sweden, he came to the US first then she followed. They were married in Minneapolis, where he passed away in 1945 (I think from complications from a broken leg). Emma died in California Feb1978 and their eldest son Kenneth Emil Swanson (my dad's dad) died (Oct1973 in California) all are buried in Minneapolis at the Sunset Cemetery. They had 3 children; Kenneth, Eheinhold and Claria, all now deceased. I also have limited information on Kenneth Emil Swanson because my grandparents divorced when my dad was an early teen. They had 6 children and owned a pet store & gas station in Montecito California. My grandma Evelyn Zinniel Swanson (Kenneth's wife) passed away Jun2006. It's difficult to find information because they were born in Sweden! Thank you for any assistance anyone can provide!!
Michelle Swanson Cavazos

Hi there-
We have found (through Swedish census') that Claus Bood Swanson aka Klas Josephsson Bod was the youngest of 6 boys & 1 girl. Joseph Svensson Bod married Christina Charlotta Johansdottor in about 1856. They had Victor Josephsson Bod (Victor) in 1856, Johan Gottfrid Josephsson Bod in 1858, Frans Edvin Josephsson Bod in 1860, Josefina Wilhelmina Josephsdotter Bod (Josephine) in 1862, Carl Amatius Josephsson Bod (Carl/Charles) in 1863, Pehr August Josephsson Bod (August) in 1865, and my ancestor Klas Josephsson Bod (aka Claus Bood Swanson) in 1867.

We know that Charles, Victor, August, Josephine & Claus came over to RI in around the 1890's.

The patriarch Joseph Svensson Bod may have been a soldier... Bod had something to do with being in the military, sort of like we use the name John Smith, MD today. Bod anglicized to BOOD when they came over. Joseph Svensson Bod's father (& Claus' grandfather) was Sven Pettersson Bod, which is perhaps where the Svensson came from that my ancestor took on when he came to Rhode Island. Svensson anglicized to SWANSON.

Which one of the brothers is your ancestor?

I have had some contact 8 years ago with descendants of Victor Josephsson Bood (descended from second son, Carl Bood).

Nice to hear from you- we just in the past 3 weeks have gotten all the Joseph Svensson Bod information- including some that goes back to the late 1600's... so I literally have not checked this posting in years.

Seeking info on Clayton Swanson and wife Faye from Omaha, NE, early 1940's. Clayton was killed in action in France WW11 and left wife Faye and 2 yr old daughter living in Omaha, NE, in late 1944 or early 1945. I don't know Faye's maiden name, but do know that their daughter was named Margaret Ann. Have wedding picture of daughter and new husband but no name for husband. Can you, or anyone you know, put me in contact with daughter Margaret Ann, or anyone related that might still be living. Faye may have remarried and have a different surname and Margaret Ann would also have her husband's surname. May have to go by the story more than the last name. Thank you.

Dale O. Tjaden
dale.tjaden@gmail.com

Hello. I am researching my great grandfather whose name I believe is Henry Olaf Swanson. I was always told by my mother that he emigrated from Norway, to Australia and that his relatives moved to US and adopted the name Swanson, so he did also. He married a Catherine Mc Carthy and had at least one son Bernard Joseph Swanson born around 1890 in either Balmain or less likely in UK in Lancashire. I am so happy to hear of Swansons from Norway as I had almost given up. everyone told me that name had to be Swedish and I had my facts wrong. Any assistance would be a help. I have world wide membership but cant get past the marraige in Australia, same year my grandfather was born to find anything else. to find any information about his arrival, dates etc, assistance with what to look up would be great, or maybe family connection with similar names?

Susie: --
John Sigfrid is probably the son of unmarried pigan Beata Petronella Bengtsdotter. Birth record of 29 April 1871 in Harplinge parish in Halland län Sweden. Beata was raised as a fosterdotter in the Johan Kristoffer Frimodig/ Sara Eriksdotter family which included dotter Johanna Petronella, sonen Bengt Elof, and dotter Agneta. Father Johan had been a sailor. This might account for mother Beata using "Johansson" as the patronymic for her son as she and baby were living there when the child was born although that is conjecture. But, it "fits" your family story that he had the "Johnson" name followed by the "Swanson" name. I do not know where his future wife, Hanna Swanson, was born but if John Sigfrid was raised in Hanna's family, start researching the parishes between Halmstad and Falkenberg would seem logical.

Did you find the right family? Here's who they are. The dates you cite point to these two emigrants below from the same parish in Sweden. They were not married when they left in 1880 but probably married in July when Malena arrived. Anna Julia born on 21 April 1881 was probably their first child and born in America. The family (Nels, Minnie, Bessie, Ida, Harry, George) was living at 789 Winchester, Chicago in the 1900 census. Minnie, Ida, Harry, and George are at 1932 Nebraska, Chicago in 1910 census. Nels and Minnie are living at 1804 Kedzie Avenue, Chicago in 1920. In 1930, the couple in their 70's are living in Mussellshell county, Montana. Harry and George are probably traceable in the 1918 draft registration as well as the 1920 and 1930 census. (Where are Nels and dotter Bessie in 1910 - Montana?)
==============
Svensson, Nils
Dräng (unmarried man)
b. 6/29/1858 in Örkened, Kristianstads län (Skåne)
Emigrated 4/6/1880
from Håstad 6, Österslöv, Kristianstads län (Skåne)
to Amerika
================
Johnsdotter, Malena
Piga (unmarried woman)
b. 7/21/1859 in Fjälkestad, Kristianstads län (Skåne)
Emigrated 7/20/1880
from Håstad 12, Österslöv, Kristianstads län (Skåne)
to Amerika
NOTE: Malena traveled with her older sister Pernilla(1857)
Swanson - Charles and Archibald in Canada

Hi - I am trying to locate details about my great uncles and their sons. Charles Alexander and Archibald Swanson (born 1886 & 1889 respectively in Chelsea London - Father, James Charles Swanson, Mother, Eliza Ann Sutcliff) As very young men, they emigrated to Canada about 1905. Both served in the Canadian Armed Forces during WW1 (Archie was gassed but survived). Charles married Fanny and had two sons, Roger and Richard. Archie married a widow, name unknown about 1947/8 and one son, name unknown born about the same time. I believe Charlie settled in Winnipeg and Archie in Edmonton, Alberta. I'd love to have more information and especially contact with living relatives. If anyone reading this can help, that would be just wonderful. Thankyou.

Thank you for the additional information. I haven't gone to ScotlandsPeople due to the additional cost of research. Here on A.com, the 1851 Census has 2 Alexander Swansons, one married to Janet MacBeath and one to just Janet Swanson. Interestly, neither has a Donald nor David. The MacBeath Swanson has a Daniele and Darrel, while the other has a Daniel. As noted above, there seems to be squishiness about the names Daniel, Donald, David, making research tricky. Having the Swanson-MacBeath wedding date may help!

Hi ... I think I am also descended from Alexander Swanson and Janet McBeath who were married 12/4/1822 in Thurso. I come from one of their sons David Swanson. David became a missionary/minister in the Free Kirk of Scotland and remained in Scotland working in the industrial central belt (Greenock). Before moving south David married Robina Norquay of Orkney and they had three sons - Benjamin, Alexander and John. This Alexander was my great grandfather. I found my information from 'Scotlands People' the govt website where you can find birth, marriage & death certificates and census information. The census information is helpful as you can see the names of siblings living in the homes. The name shows up as Swanson and Swanston depending on the official writing the forms. Its nice to greet a (distant) cousin. Hope you are able to find out more. Best wishes.

Re: Swanson, Frank A. & Mary/Marie Swedberg

Oh my goodness! Thank you for responding! I thought I have hit a dead end with this lineage!

Mary is noted to have been born December 1964 in Sweden. I know nothing else about her or her family. Her last recorded residence is 1900 Sioux Falls, SD. She was named in the 1903 Sioux Falls City directory, however. But I have no idea when she died. On one census, it said she came over to the US in 1883. I am not sure if she was single or married at the time.

I would GUESS that she were single, as I believe to have found Frank/Franz A. Swanson in the 1885 Minneapolis MN census. Among those in his family number were: Chas (35), Matilda (31), Albert (11) and Anna (5). I would tend to believe that Chas was Frank's brother and Matilda and children are Chas' wife and family. They are all listed under the last name Swanson in this census.

So, A. is Frank/Franz' middle initial as I have found it. I have no info on the parents of Frank whatsoever, which is what I am trying to find.

I suppose it could be possible that Chas named his son, Albert, after his father? And therefore Albert could be the actual middle name of Frank? Just a hunch! Frank had a daughter he, too, named Anna, same name as Chas' (potential) daughter.

I appreciate any help I can get! This is the one line I would really like to get any info possible! Unfortunately, there are not many living relatives of this family, and the ones that are I have no idea how to contact or if they would even know anything. Mary and Frank's grandson is alive, but he is hard of hearing and had a stroke, so he has lost much of his memory. :(

Again, thank you so much for responding! Just when I thought I could go no further, an angel appears with something! Much appreciated!

~Christa Cornelius
