Hi, I had a Great Uncle Henry Swanston, born in Kirkaldy Fife. My Grandfather, John Norval Swanston (his brother) also born in Kirkaldy, and they had a sister named Lizzie. Their Dad was Henry ? Swanston, and he was married to Margaret (Maggie Norval). My Grandfather always told me that the family was determined to always keep the "t" in Swanston, as it had always been. I am a little fuzzy on some of the names, but my Mum could fill me in better. My Grandparents and Mum moved from Chapel Brae, to Edinburgh when Mum was very young. Not sure if these people would be related to you, but surely from the same area.

Hello
My great great great grandmother was an Elizabeth Swanston Hughes. She was born in 1821 in Gateshead Durham (father William, mother Mary). She married Thomas Swanston Hughes, an engineer and shipbuilder in Newcastle in 1843, and was listed in various census forms after that as Elizabeth Swanston Hughes. Not sure if it is the same person, but they had 9 or 10 children, so its possible that one of them moved back up to Scotland.
Hope it helps

John Swanston Blyth was born in Glasgow 27 Oct 1804, son of James Blyth 9 Apr 1749 - July 1823 and Ann Coventry b. 3 Oct 1763. (These details I have from a family tree handed down our family.) Her parents I assume to be Robert Coventry and Margaret Morison from Kinross.
Does anyone have a Swanston in their tree 17th/18th century who could be an ancestor?
Mary Blyth

Hi,

How interesting is this site. I am Elizabeth Catherine Swanston and had a gran (born 1910) of the same name. She lived in Looe for a while when my dad(Michael Swanston) and my uncle (Peter Swanston) was born and me and my dad have lived in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear most of my life. Is there any connections here with the family you speak about? If so, it would be great to hear from you. There aren't many of our Swanston's left.

My grandmother's family came from Scotland - her name was Edna Margaret Drybrough Smith. The Drybrough's were a very prominent family in Scotland and owned distillaries. My grandmother's brother was a Doctor in Sussex. My sister is researching the Drybrough family tree at present. The surname is spelt differently but I believe it is is the same family.

Hello again, Sylvia.

Another distant cousin has provided the attached copy of the marriage banns for Andrew Swanston and Isabella Somerville (Sommervail). Their entry is at the top of the page.

Unfortunately, the parents names are not included. The "cautions " (fees paid to confirm the intention to marry) were provided by members of the Haldane family of Lugate (near Stow). The writing on the copy is hard to decipher.

We were in Scotland briefly last May and visited Old Gala House in Galashiels but I had more info than they did.

Regards, Ken

Dear Tom -My great great grandfather was James Miller, farmer of Balbrikie, Kennoway, married to Eliza Swanston. We know of their son Thomas, born 1805 at Kennoway, who founded a trading company in Las Palmas, Canary Islands. We have no record of Janet, born 1811. Eliza was born in 1766, so quite old in 1811. Did James and Eliza have their first child Thomas before getting married in 1810?

Or was there a younger couple in the same parish, with same names? I believe another Eliza Swanston was born in about 1783, in Kennoway, according to the International Genealogical Index -surely related to the other (?) older James Miller (born 1765) and Eliza Swanston of Balbrikie.

Best regards, James Miller

My line is:

Andrew Swanston c 1780
John Swanston b 1808 Galashiels
James Swanston b 1845 Galashiels
John Andrew Swanston b 1871 Egremont Township Ontario
John Ewart Swanston (my father) b 1900 Egremont Township
John Kenneth Swanston b 1942 Winnipeg Manitoba

Let me know if you would like any information on these families. If Andrew c 1780 is our closest common grandparent, we're 4th cousins, twice removed. In my original Email I left off "great" when referring to James.

Regards
Ken S.

hi there.. I am also researching Swanston /Sommervail (Sommerville)
Have you tried searching the website www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I found some records on there.
Andrew Swanston (c 1780?) and Isabella Sommervail (c 1784?) were my gt. gt. gt gt gt Grandparents !! Think I got that right!
Looking at the scotlandspeople website (Marraige results OPR Index Marraiges (1553 - 1854) I found a record of thier marraige. They married in 4/12/1802 in the Parish of Stow. I also found another record of another Andrew Swanston who married Elizabeth Dawson in 1776 at Eccles. Not sure if they are definitly the parents of Andrew who married Isabel but the areas are only a few miles apart in location and thier ages would be about right. I havent followed up on this any further due to other commitments but when I get back to it again and if I find anything further then will let you know. Please feel free to email if I can help with anything else.
regards Sylvia
p.s. I take it we are cousins somewhat removed!!
Glasgow in fact. the Swanston connection's came from the Duns, Stow and West \Lothian side at the late 29th early 20th century as far as I can find though latterly mostly in Edinburgh. If you want to get in touch with me at nanmcghee'aol.com I can send you a file to compare with yours.

Andrew Swanston married Isabel Somerville (Sommervail according to LDS data base) in Stow, Midlothian on Dec 4, 1802. Children were born in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Any info on the ancestory of Andrew or Isabel? Some of the Swanstons (including my grandfather James and his parents, John Swanston and Elizabeth Beck,) migrated from Galashiels to Egremont Township, Ontario in the mid 1800s.

G. Swanston emigrated to San Francisco in 1850, then moved to the Sacramento valley where he founded our branch of the family. We know that he was on a ship from Ireland, but other than that we have no surviving knowledge of his origins. Does anyone know of a George Swanston that left Ireland/Scotland for the USA in 1850?

There is suppose to be 100 people named Swanston in Berwickshire E. of Lothian. And there is a picture-book style village named Swanston at the foot of the Pentland Hills just south of Edinburgh Scotland. Robert Louis Stevenson the author spent time there as a boy. Peter Swanston emigrated to New York from Preston, Berwick Co. they didn't keep records till 1855 so it makes it difficult to search. We are Swanstone's with the e and I'm searching your Swanston spelling because there is so little with the spelling Swanstone.
Julie Swantone

hello, I just had a report done for our family in Scotland and didn't come up with much because we are Swanstone with the e and now I'm swithching over to your spelling, but in the report it mentions the Swanston Villiage, it's a small village with picture book style white-wash cottages nestled at the foot of the Pentland Hills just south of Edinburgh.( we are suppose to be west of Edinburgh). The village is famous, as the author Robert Louis Stevenson spent much of his boyhood there. There ar many Swanston's in Berwickshire, East of Lothian today. And there is a tomstone in the Parish of Preston in the Co of Berwick that mentions John Preston 1812-1847, son of Peter Swanstone who emigrated to N.Y. from Preston. the didn't keep records until 1855 so my family just missed being recorded. I got this info. from ancestral@fsss.co.uk just today.
