Does anyone have a history of the Swartz family from Pennsylvania? specifically the Philadelphia and Bucks' County area? Our Kratz relative is daughter of Jacob
Stover and Elizabeth Swartz. The Stovers and Myers (Rachel
Stover Kratz married Michael Myers) were Mennonites but
the names Swartz and Kratz are traditionally Jewish so
wondered about whether that might have been the case
with these ancestors.
According to the Stover family history Jacob Stover, Elizabeth Swartz' husband, left the family farm at the time of the Revolutionary War. History had him forced to drive a team that had been taken from his father, Henry Stover, for the cause of the war. Young Jacob ended up hauling not only supplies out to the battle field but often wounded soldiers.
He'd been mistreated as well so tried to escape. When caught he'd been turned over to George Washington himself near Philadelphia (Valley Forge? Fort Washington?) and from that time on, after he'd told General Washington his story, he was promoted to being his personal assistant and hauled only his personal "effects" (from Rev. AJ Fretz Stauffer/Stover History)
I guess it's my female insticts that would have me trying to piece together other stories I'm finding on message boards of both Stovers and Myers.
One message had Jacob as being "cut off" from his Mennonite family. I don't know if that was true or even the same Jacob but it seems interesting to think about.
Since their daughter Elizabeth ended up marrying Phillip Kratz and no mention of their religious beliefs seem to show up in family history..then later after daughter Rachel Kratz marries into the strongly Mennonite Myers (though it was claimed her mother was English and a Quaker) who knows? bHistory has Michael and Rachel (Kratz) Myers picking up roots to move to Ohio/Indiana territory shortly after they tied the knot. it makes for an interesting mystery if nothing else.
Would love to know if anyone has already solved this. Were the Pennsylvania Swartz family Jewish? I have found evidence that the Kratz brothers who'd left Philadelphia for Kentucky were definitely practicing Jews. I know that
many of the Jewish people had pretended to convert during
the times they were being persecuted throughout Europe.
My guess is they'd have done anything necessary to make it
to the new world as so many others were fleeing here to find
religious freedom.
I'd imagine it would have been more than a bit difficult for Jewish people living in the midst of so many strongly Ana Baptist believers in Pennsylvania (as well as Quakers and Shakers) at the time the Stover/Swartz union transpired. We have no actual date or record of the marriage as we do for the rest of the family. What an irony if it turned out Jacob and Elizabeth had been "shunned" because he chose to marry someone outside of the Mennonnite community.

I have a record for Elizabeth Swartz married to Jacob Stover in or near Bucks County Pennsylvania some time around 1780. She died in 1802 but there are about 9 children
named as Jacob's by both Elizabeth (his first wife) and
Catherine (his second)
Henry, Mathias, Elizabeth, Ann, Abraham, Catherine, Jonas,
Samuel, and Issac Stover. I'm not sure who's children were
Elizabeth Swartz' Stover's and who's are Catherine's. The only line followed from there is Elizabeth Stover's who married Phillip Kratz.
Here's this furthest back in my line that I have:

Elias Swartz b:Nov 20, 1811 in Hatfield Twp, Montgomery Co, PA - d:Aug 31, 1894 in Danboro, Bucks Co, PA. Elias married Elizabeth Conver (Conover) b:Jun 11, 1814 in Hatfield Twp, Montgomery Co, PA - d:Apr 27, 1890 in Hilltown Twp, Bucks Co, PA.
They were married in Hilltown Twp, Bucks Co on Aug 10, 1834. I have alot of info on their children and my direct line all the way to the present. But I can't figure out who Elias' parents or siblings were, that's where I've been still stuck at for 13 years.
I made a trip to PA in 2005 (I'm from MI), I did find Elias & Elizabeth's & their children's graves and got some great pictures of the headstones, but that's about it.

I really need ideas on what to try next, where to look, who to contact, what I may have overlooked, etc.
Hello,

I'm not sure if this will help, but "Isaac and Sarah Swartz" are my 3rd great-grandparents and lived in Berrien County, MI (where I grew up). Their son "Jacob" and his wife "Laura" (from IL) are my 2nd great-grandparents. In the 1880 US Census, he was living with Sarah and their 2 children (my great-grandfather Harry and their son Henry). I cannot find Jacob anywhere (or Henry)after 1900; and I do know that Laura remarried. I just don't know if Jacob died, or if he just ran off (maybe to PA!)Not sure if this helps, but feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I am looking for information on Joseph & Rose (Fried) Swartz and their family. They lived in the Pittsburgh area. Rose died in the late 1930s and Joseph died sometime before then - I don't know when. They had the following children: Amelia, Wilma, Leo, Isador, Bertha and Irene. Irene is my grandmother and she died in 1946. Not much else is known about the family. Any information or leads would be appreciated. Thanks, Jodi

I am looking for further information on a Michel Swartz/Schwartz who married an Elizabeth. They lived in Manheim from at least 1840 (probably prior to this but its hard finding census information) to 1900. Michel was born in PA, June of 1810 and he lived until sometime between 1900 and 1910. Elizabeth was born in PA also, in 1812 and she died sometime between 1880 and 1900.

Their children are as follows:
William (1836 - )
Uriah (1838 - )
Harriet (1842 - )
Samuel (1845 - )
Mary Elizabeth (1846 - )
Abraham (1847 - )
Rebecca (1850 - )
Jacob (1852 - 1885)

Any information concerning this family would be fantastic and extremely helpful!

Thanks!

I have some information on this family. Isaac and Sarah Swartz moved to Michigan from Pennsylvania shortly after Jacob's birth. Jacob was born in 1852 in PA and the next child Eliza was born in 1853 in Michigan. Jacob was still in Michigan in 1870.

I do have more information, but it is currently packed as I moved to TN. I originally had my information in a computer program, but the computer crashed and I lost the digital information. I have paper copies, but it will take me some time to locate.

Still looking for some help! Jacob was born abt. 1852 and died on 11 May 1885. He had 2 sons Charles William and William Jacob. Both lived in the Philadelphia area. His wife, Catherine (Kate) Rummage remarried quickly to Charles Smith in 1885 and eventually moved to Woodbury, New Jersey.

The only possible connection that I kept running into was that his parents could have been Issac Swartz and Sarah Rouche, but they lived in Michigan!

Please HELP ME! I need to solve this mystery for my own sanity.

ANY help is appreciated!

The Vandeventer Family book, by Christobelle Van Deventer (1943), page 190, lists the surname as Swarts, which is incorrect. Robert is my gr-grandfather. James Sr. died March 1876 in Vernon Co., MO. Hannah, widowed, later married Peter Wyckoff.

Robert married Ella Frances Hamilton in 1877 in Johnson Co., IA. They had four children: Raymond Hamilton, Mary Hannah, Robert E. (Jr.?), and Paul E.C. Swartz. Raymond is my grandfather.

In the 1900 census, Hannah Wyckoff, widowed again, was listed with son James (J. Thompson "Schwartz") in Nebraska City Ward 2, Otoe, Nebraska. Neither is found after that, except James in 1901 (see below). James' wife was Josie (Josephine?) and his sons' were listed as Roy/Ray and Victor Hugo.

On October 30, 1900, James took out patent 660,667 for an Anchor Setting Tool, and patent 660,668 for a Wire Stay Weaving Device. On February 26, 1901 he took out patent 669,050 for a Tension Device for Wire Fences. His patent 669,050 is mentioned as a Reference in a 1975 patent for a Plant Support.

I would like any information on James Thompson Swartz (Jr.), his wife, and their sons.

Thanks,
Mary Hunter
Looking for George M. Swartz, Pennsylvania (may be still alive?)

Hi all... I happened to have found a picture of his mother being sold on ebay, and wanted to somehow let him or his family know. I came across it while looking for pics of my own family, and his mother's was in the same lot as some of my family. Apparently she was a friend of this one cousin, as I can't find any family connection, and they are listed one page apart in the 1900 census.

ANYWAY... Juniata County (or close by)

George M Swartz, born 1918 (possibly October), son of David Leigh and Margaret ("Martha") E. (McMeen) Swartz. George had a sister, Jane Naomi Swartz, that died at the age of 13.

I've looked and looked, but can't find any evidence of him marrying, and if so, any children he might have! Can anyone help?

The picture on ebay is a fairly good picture of a picture, so even if the family doesn't actually WANT it, it might be fun for them to see!

Hi,
My mother was a Swartz and while doing our family trees I come to a loss on finding any information on the Swartz side of the family. I believe the name was originally spelled "Schwartz" and it was shortened up by my grandfather to "Swartz". I cannot find anything past my great, great grandfather and have very little information on him. I would love to know more! Could you check and see if we might be in the same family? My grandfather was Robert L. Swartz, born 1899 in North Springfield, Pa. and died 1974 in Ashtabula, Ohio...his father was George Schwartz, born 1873 in Pennsylvania and died 1901 in Erie co., Pa. and is buried in the W. Springfield, Pa.Cemetery...his father was William L. Schwartz, born 1836 Pa. and died 1909 and is also buried in the West. Springfiled Cemetery in Erie Co., Pa.
I would love to know who his parents are and maybe even furture. I"m keeping my fingers crossed to see if we may be related.
Thank you for your time. You can email me at lylacarr@yahoo.com
