Missing Family

I am currently trying to find information out about my grandfather, Elvin Gilbert Sweet born May 11, 1925. My mother never met him because her mother and her side of the family basically kept my mother hidden from him, saying he was a bad man. In my research I have found a few newspaper articles about him committing burglaries in New Jersey in the 1960's and even obtained a mugshot of him. I just want to know more about him and anyone who did know about him has passed away. I know he was born in Pemberton, NJ and his parents were Gilbert C. Sweet and Christine Macellari and that his grandfather was also a Elvin Sweet, all of which I found out from Ancestry. Anyone who has any information at all about these Sweets please message me back. Thank you Melissa

Looking for the parents of Lamech Sweet. His obituary says he was born May 1804 in Litchfield, Herkimer Co. New York and was left an orphan at the age of seven. He married Eunice Skidmore (daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Lull) Skidmore on Dec. 9 1830 in New York (Butternuts or New Lisbon probably). Came to Michigan in the fall of 1833 and died in 1894 in Waterloo, Jackson co. Michigan. Wondering if he is connected to an Asa Sweet who is the only Sweet listed in Litchfield on the Census of 1800.

Jonathan Sweet (I believe may be my ggg uncle also) was a volunteer. Gen. Erastus Cleaveland was also from Madison County.
At least some of your Sweets are in the IGI. So is Electa Lockwood b. 8 Mar 1825, Webster, NY, d. 18 Jan 1905, Tilden, NE. Married Thomas J. Sweet b. abt 1821, Webster, NY. Also lists her marriage to Luther Augustus Russell and their three children, but not the children with Thomas. (Looked quickly and found Uriah in MI for the 1850 census.) You can get dizzy searching all the different name combinations but it can pay off!

Thomas J. They lived in Ovid Township, MI (near Coldwater) and he is buried in the Lockwood plot there. After his death, Electa married and moved to Nebraska with Luther Augustus Russell. I know nothing about Thomas J. before he arrived in MI and he has been my roadblock for years.
Re: Thomas J.
Thanks. I missed the cemetery records; and appreciate your responding to my query. Will have to keep looking for Hiram's vital information as the cemetery transcription does not provide any dates. May be that only his disappearance in the census will signal a time of death. Will conclude that Hiram and Roxanna Rowland did not have children.

Again, your help is appreciated.

Greenberry Sweet was my great grandfather. He was not born in 1851. It was 1838 in Claiborne Co., TN. His father was David Sweet and his mother was Highly (perhaps maiden name of Holton). We have no info. further back than David and Highly. He married Elizabeth F. Hall in 1865, Anderson Co., TN, where he lived until his death in 1912. My second cousin who was a child when Greenberry died recounted that Greenberry was a big man, much bigger than my 6'4" grandfather John and very "jolly". He was a farmer and blacksmith. Their youngest son was John Webster Sweet, my paternal grandfather. Among other children were Samuel,Sanford, Martha, Sarah Adaline (Elizabeth's daughter by former husband John Lane, a Union soldier who died in the Civil War).

We would appreciate any info. anyone can give us on Greenberry's grandparents.

Benjamin Sweet in NY or ??

I am looking for help in finding info about my gr gr grandfather, Benjamin Sweet. I believe he died between the years 1790 and 1819.He married Lucy ? and they had children Deborah, Phoebe, Susan, Hannah, Dorcas, Thomas, Marcy, and Polly. After Benjamin died, Lucy bought land in Otsego or Erie county, NY in 1819 and she and the children lived in Otsego or Erie county, NY. Deborah married Daniel Cole, Phoebe married Parley Robinson, Dorcas married Harlow French, Marcy married Silas Hodgkins, I don't think Polly married. Thomas married Electa Lockwood in Branch county, MI. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for information on Mabel Sweet who was born about 1832 in Ohio; married Edwin Smith who was born in New York. Hattie Belle married first Clifford Wellington Palmer; second Michael Dell Murtaugh. Eugene married first Alice Empey (my husband's great grandparents); Blanche Raygor. I don't know where or when Mabel Sweet and Edwin Smith were married, or who Mabel's parents were, or any information about Eugene and Hattie's siblings. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Gospero SWEET, Gadsden County, FL SLAVES

Rev. Gospero Sweet (1771-1856) and his son William Charles Sweet (1817-1898) both owned slaves in Gadsden County, Florida. The 1850 Slave Census shows William C. Sweet owns 8 slaves. The 1860 Slave Census shows Gospero Sweet owns 3 slaves and Benjamin Sweet owns 14. I found an earlier record that states that Gospero Sweet owned 480 acres of land and 28 slaves. I am not sure why his name shows up in the 1860 Slave census. It might be his widow/son.

There are many Sweet African Americans in Gadsden County. It is my guess that many of them were former slaves of Gospero Sweet. Does anyone have more information?

bart_gripenstraw@yahoo.com

thanks for the 'clue's you provided MY brother just married Amy Sweet, granddaughter to FLloyd. from her knowledge "Floyd was married to my grandmother: Marjorie Fox for a while then they were divorced and he married Jerri (don't know maiden name) Floyd and Jerri had three children, Brian Sweet, Tracy Sweet (Girl) and I can't remember other sons name right now." I'm guessing you are the same Brian. Can you tell me more about either Marjorie or Jerri?

Re: Chester J. Sweet

Yes, they are two Chesters. I have had the wrong one in my files. My Chester was "James Chester Sweet". His mother, I beleive was Sarah Thomas. Cannot find James Chester's father. Sarah married Warren Harris about 1867, James Chester would have been about 10. I cannot find my James Chester in the 1860 census, or any of his family.
