Is there a connection?

My Great Great Grandmother was a woman called Norah Morris and her husband was Alfred Edward Hill, I would love to know if the Swift family where the connectin to them meeting. so here goes.

Norah Morris (1892-1972) dau of.
James Morris (1848-?) and Martha Swift (1835-?) from Dymock, Gloucestershire
Martha dau of.
Thomas Swift (1811-1898) of Dymock, and Mary Ann Phelps (1818-?) also of Dymock
he was the son of
Joseph Swift and Mary Chamberlain

Norah's husband Alfred Edward Hill (1882-1930) is the son of

William Arthur Hill (1841-1903) and Agnes Watson (1840-1883) as you can see Agnes died a year after Alfred was born and in 1890 (with 10 kids from the ages of 24 to 8) he married Laura Swift born 24 April 1868 in Ledbury Herefordshire

they had three children
Laura Gladys Hill b 1891
William Hill b 1895
Lily Hill b 1900

Laura was the dau of
John Swift b 1818 in Ledbury, Herefordshire and
Charlotte Sophia Maisey b 1831 in Bromesberrow, Gloucestershire.

seeing as there is only 5 miles between Ledbury and Dymock does anyone have a connection between the two familys? could a family connection be how Alfred and Norah met?

Hello!! Ten years you have waited!! I may have some info. William and Florence A Swift are buried in Pueblo Colorado ( Mountain View Cemetary Lot E 71 Block F Row 1 and 2). Florence A Swift is from my family. She was born to Robert J West and Genefra A Davis in May 1890 (gathered from census records). I have complete records for Genefra Davis. Date of death on tombstones is 2-22-1923. The 1930 census for Genefra Davis indicates that Florence Swift age 15 (grand-daughter) was living with Genefra in Pueblo Colorado in 1930 and that she was born in Utah. I believe that Florence Swift is the daughter of Florence A Swift and grand-daughter of Genefra Davis. I would love to share info. medina19@q.com

Thanks for your reply Frank. Well that is sad news, it sounds like there is no hope of my line having been left behind by your George. So I guess I am just stuck with the mysterious ancestors "James and Emma" who disappear and have no marriage. By the way, James is the son of Jonathan (brother of Job) and grandson of John and Jane (which you already have). As for your George, I think the most likely parents for him (if he isn't James) are George Swift and Mercy Amesbury who married 24 Jun 1782 Southstoke, Monkton Combe, Somerset. Good luck with your research, regards Jacqueline.

Rob's my son who keeps me amused by funding the research into the family tree.

The only possible family member who was left was a girl who was my great grand aunt who died at about age two:
Maria Swift
Your great grand aunt
Birth 25 Oct 1825 in Wiltshire/Somerset, England
Death 1827 in Wiltshire/Somerset, England
I have no direct cited documentation and am unsure who gave me the information.

The Dawsons are another dead end. Some of my "cousins" have chased down and added Names without checking too closely which I have edited out. As an example, Ann Dawson being the mother of Emma Naomi Dawson eventhough Ann was born in Virginia.
frank
frank

Hi Frank (or should I be calling you Rob as in robswift1190?),
Although I have persuaded several researchers to consider my theory that your "George" might be the same person as my "James", I am at a loss as to how to prove it. So sadly no, I have been unable to connect our two families up. Have you found anything to suggest that one or more children were left behind when they emigrated ? Mostly I've been filling in little details and working on some of my other families. Perhaps we need to learn a bit more about the Dawsons in case that sheds any light on our Swfts !
Regards Jacqueline.

Hello. I was curious to see if you had gotten any info on your Elizabeth Jane Swift? I'm sorry to say, I'm not able to help you, but, this is the first time I have searched for Swifts in NY. It is not my family that I am doing the search for, but, for a friend from KY. He had an ancestor, Lyman Barber, who came with his bro. Philitus Swift Barber, from Erie Co., NY to Louisville, KY area. The name Swift is repeated throughout the generations, before my friend, who is 80 yrs.now. The family was likely Catholic, as they came to the area in KY where so many Catholic families had migrated from St. Marys, MD. Throughout the years, the Barbers were Catholic. My friend's maternal families were from the large Catholic immigrants to St. Mary's, MD from England. These MD/KY families connected for generations. His great grandfather, Lyman Barber and his brother, Phil. Swift Barber, however, were from Erie Co.,NY. You are my first effort in searching Swifts. I feel there must be a past Swift connection in NY, when so many of their decendants carried that given name. When I saw your querie re: Erie Co. & the Swift name, had to make you my first attempt in my search. If you like, I can, also, be reached at: bnesmith4247@hotmail.com - Thank you and good luck. Betty

Hi NJ
Thank you so much for your reply. I have been searching for three years now and I have had very little success. My biggest problem as i said before I have no one left alive to ask about my family. The problem that is confusing me is that Jeannette swift (my grandmother) had two husbands. She had two children with the surname harper and three children with the surname Dunn. My mother was a Jeanette Dunn. I can find no marriage between Jeannette Swift and Robert Harper although the birth certificate for the first child Dorothy May Harper born camberwell 1905 states father Robert Harper mother Jeannette Harper nee Swift. Yet the marriage certificate I have for the second marriage to Albert V Dunn states Jeannette Swift spinster. Surley if she had married Robert harper first it should state Harper nee Swift. I am beginning to think that they didn't marry which is the BIG secret in my family. I have found that Robert Harper must have been alive in 1915 because a second child was born in the april. My mother was the next child born in 1917 and she was a dunn, also she (Jeannette swift grandmother) was six months pregnant with my mother when she married Albert in the march of 1917 and my mother was born 5th June 1917.
I think that Robert Dunn must have died in 1916 as conscription for WW1 started on 1st Jan 1916 and CWGC have several Robert harpers who died at battle of somme.
I am almost at the point of admitting deafeat. Here are the only facts my mother told me.
She was named for her mother Jeannette.
Her mother's nick name was ginny or jinny not sure of spellings.
Jeannette Swift was related to Sir Rigby Phillip W. Swift Q.C.
That Jeannette Swift was disowned because she married beneath status. On Birth cert of first child dorothy, it states profession of father as Journeyman.
I know that my mother had a very sad childhool and she never talked about it. She told me she was orphaned at 14.You now have all the info that i have. I have traced Rigby Swift and his family but no mention of Jeannette. I think that as i can't find where my grandmother is born that i will not be able to go any further. It just as the older I get I want to know where I came from, Grandmother is such a close relation and yet I know nothing at all.
Thank you soo much for taking the time to read this e-mail., I know it is a bit long winded but i needed to tell you all the information that i have. Once again thankyou for taking the time to reply and I wish you a very happy new year to you and your family
SM
A Collision of Names--Swift, Bortdof, Sinks

I've been looking into the ancestry of my lines, but I have found a snag. When I get to my 2nd great-grandfather, I find names of two spouses. Normally I'd just assume that a divorce and remarriage happened, except that the records for both women contain the names of my ancestors.

Both look fairly legitimate to me. This is causing a headache. Any suggestions, folks?

-Swift

I found out what was going on. An interesting thing; apparently my 2nd great-grandfather could get a wife in his near-60's. The first spouse, my actual 2nd great-grandmother, had died about ten years before. He and the second spouse had one child, while the first spouse had the children who's names I recognize.

Thanks, folks! Rest assured I'll be bugging you again.

-Swift

I am looking for information about William Swift and wife Charlotte Emma Thomson. Their daughter Elizabeth Emma Swift was born 1871 'at sea', the birth was registered in Bristol. My question is? What was the wife doing aboard ship? In 1881 Eliz is in Leeds with Uncle George. I have not been able to find her parents in 1881. Any help would be appreciated.
The Swifts can be traced back to Banbury Oxford 1500's.
Patricia

I am hoping that someone can help me discover my gg-grandfather's parents were. He was Benjamin G Swift, born in Oxford County, Maine, (most likely in Oxford Town or maybe Paris) in about 1822, and died in Oxford on 21 Sep 1875. He married Catherine A Webber, daughter of David Webber and Eliza Ames, on 15 Feb 1853.

I suspect that he might be the son of Samuel Swift and his first wife Statira Gammon, but I have no documentation to support that other than the 1830 census showing Samuel with a male child 5-9, and statements in local histories that Samuel and Statira had other children besides Abigail who was born in 1820.

Statira's father was Benjamin Gammon. Could it be that my gg-grandfather be named for HIS grandfather?

I am hoping that someone can help me out. How would I find out if there is a marriage record or a death record that lists the parents of Benjamin G Swift?

Thanks.

Carol Crockett

I have a Lucinda Swift that married a Russell St.John Married: 18 Dec 1832- Harford, Hartford, Connecticut.

Russell was married to a Rebecca Bennett and then married Lucinda. I believe she died then married a Elizabeth.

In my book they only have Rebecca and Elizabeth. Rebecca in the book had 4 children. She passes 1830
1. Daniel B.1808
2. George S (died young)b.1810
3.William E (1811-12)
4 Federick 1819
5 Charles G. 1821

Lucinda Swift (not sure on children)m.1832 d.before 1838 (i found a record jan 9, 1833)

Elizabeth Hamilton (no Children)m. 1838 (found a record also 0ct 14, 1839 also)

He married Lucinda 2 years later. My husband gg-father is George St.John(1834 B.) who ended up in Sullivan county in 1850 is the earliest. In Federicks will he mentions George W. St.Johns children, Niece and nephew. I am not sure if this is Willaim's Son due to his first wife passed and had children only Rebecca is mentioned. Maybe he is Lucinda's son from Russell and is really a half brother to Federick. George W. St.John Dies young and wife laura Relyea St.John (moved and died in NJ). Any information would be great on lucinda Swift married to Russell st.john..
