My husband, John David (Swinford) Robinson was born a Swinford but never knew anything about his father. I've been trying to find out if he had any siblings by his father. (I'm not absolutely positive this is the right Sherman Swinford.)

Sherman J. Swinford
Born: Dec. 29, 1926
Died: Dec. 21, 1997
Place of death: Arcola, IL.

He married Mary E.
Google is your friend :) The paper's website is www.herald-review.com. Look for a "contact us" link for email and phone number. They should be able to tell you how to get an archived obit. Your husband's adoption situation is interesting, because I recently discovered a couple of other situations where Swinford children were raised by relatives. Maybe the Robinsons are kin too.

You might inquire at the Decatur Herald-Review newspaper. There is an online index that includes his name in a list of obituaries published on Dec. 22, 1997. Good luck. I am distantly related to this line, but haven't put together the relationships yet. Too many Swinfords in that area!

I am making a research assumption - because the marriage date places James in Monroe County at that date. When I look at the census - he is the only James Swinford in the County. So, making a hypothesis that it IS him, it forms some guiding assumptions so I can move forward.

I have an old handwritten family tree that annotates the marriage of James to Polly Emily Ann Presley - And it also lists her parents as John Presley and Sarah Yarberry (no dates). There is enough info in the databases to start connecting that line back to S. Carolina. (I offer that in case it helps any...)

The tree offers no more information on James. Thank you so much for sharing an interest here! I would love to learn more about what you might have on the family!
At first I thought the James Swinford you mention in the 1870 US Fed Census was the same James you are researching, but I question this for three reasons:
a) The James in the 1870 Census is only 16,
b) This James is living in another non-Swinford household, working the farm, and there is no spouse listed for this James, and
c) The date of the marriage is 20 JUN 1870, and the date of this Census record is 23 JUN 1870. (This could be a marriage bond date though).

The only information I can really find and verify is the Tennessee marriage record.

Do you have any other information on "your" James Swinford or Polly Ann Presley?

Lee
We are looking for any signs of Familial/hereditary disease in this line - particularly anything called a palsy, neuralgia or dystrophy. Do you have anything in Swinford family death certificates that would indicate this type of ailment?

Hi! James married Polly Ann Presley in Monroe County, so I reviewed the census from that area. There were lots of Presleys, but only one Swinford at that time, and it was James. He was working on a Farm at the age of 16. So, he is abt. 1854. Does that help??

Are you related to the Swinford Clan?

Swinford: Emma, Nancy, and Mary

I am looking for any information on Emma Swinford. She had two sisters: Mary Swinford 1860-1925 who married James Ed Woodard 1858-1929 and Nancy Swinford 1864-1969 who married Ephraim Osborne 1851-1929. She married Ponsler (or Poncely) Orsburn and had one child, Omer Orsburn, my great grandfather. Then I believe she married a Fenn but do not know anything about this marriage. Then she married William (or Bill) Freeman and had a daughter (at least one), Iva Freeman. She lived in/around Tipton and Howard Counties in Indiana. I believe she was originally from the Paris, IL area. I believe she died around 1897. I don't have any birth information or parents names or any other siblings. Any information provided will be SO much appreciated.

I believe I have found the correct family --- and that you and I are cousins. I had part of the names on the wives; but not their surnames.

I have two known children for LeeRoy and "May"--- Opal and Harry. LeeRoy was born 2 March 1899 (according to his draft registration.) He was the son of James Andrew Swinford and his wife Cora.

Here is my data on James:
Date of birth on his WWI draft registration card is 20 Sep 1876." This particular card does not list place of birth. Nearest relative is listed as Cora Swinford. Height is marked both tall and short (sigh), build is stout, eyes grey and hair "browne." Occupation is farmer in Chandler, Lincoln Co., Oklahoma. Card dated 12 Sept. 1918.

Date of death from cemetery records.

1900 Census: McKinnley Twp, Lincoln County, Oklahoma
Swinford, Andrew 23 B.
What was the name of the Swinford man who was married to Cora? I have a Swinford-Campbell marriage, but the woman's name is Jesse Pearl Campbell. Do you have an approximate birth and/or death date for the Swinford father?

Swinford is a one-name study for me. Have much detail on most lines.

I found a census record showing Cora Campbell, later Swinford lived on the Osage reservation in 1900. However I cannot find any other documents related anything Indian. I know there is an Indian heritage in the family for a fact because the dentist says my children (and my Swinford father) have a problem with their teeth that is genetic and specific to Native Americans. No other family line is even close to resembling anything Native American. My father does not know his Swinford family as his father died when he was about 3 years old~ I asked my Grandmother and she said she thought Cora or Amanda(??) may have received an Indian pension check???? Info, help, hints anyone please???

My data, and data on the Harrison County, Kentucky, GenWeb site shows the following info and a different first name for the Vandiver in question. I am not on the Hall list, but posted this message to the Hall message board in hopes it is gatewayed to the list.

VANDIVER, Eunom and Elizabeth SWINFORD, bond date: December 14, 1819, married December 2?, 1819.

My main research line on this branch is the Swinford line.

Carolyne

I found Amy Craig, living with her second husband Thomas Craig, living in the same county in Kentucky (Laurel) with various Walden step-children in both the 1920 and 1930 US Federal Census. It was hard to locate the Waldens living in the household in 1920 since the index has them transcribed as "Walken", not Walden.

I wasn't able to find anything referencing what happened to Thomas Walden, but given the timeframe it is possible he died in WWI.

Unfortunately I'm in the process of moving and can't get to my computer right now to provide specifics.

Lee Swinford
Plano, TX
Based on the information supplied in Carol Frazier's post, the most likely person to be the John Swinford, born circa 1820 and living in Lauren County, Kentucky is John Amos Swinford, the son of Reuben Swinford and Sarah Hughes. This John died in 1913 in Laurel County, Kentucky. He was married to Mary C. Bozeman, also known as Polly. The Bozeman surname is sometimes written as Boseman.

While it is possible that John could have sired Amy at roughly age 61, it is also possible that she is the daughter of one of sons.

He had two sons, one was Reuben Amos Swinford, also known as Rube. He was born 14 May 1850 in Georgia. He died in Rockcastle, Kentucky. The other known son is John R. Swinford, born circa 1852.

The time period of Amy's birth makes her hard to pin down her parents, since she won't show up in any census records until the 1900 census that Carol posted. I do feel sure though that she is either the daughter or granddaughter of John Amos Swinford.

Carolyne
Carol Swinford Frazier answered your post via the Swinford mailing list. She forgot to post it to the board. Here it is. I will post additional information separately.

Carolyne

----------
Source: SWINFORD@rootsweb.com
Subject: Re: [SWINFORD] info on grandmother

Hi,

I found this at Ancestry.com:

Amy Swinford, born July 1881, Rockcastle, KY. One spouse listed,
Thomas Walden, born November, 1878 in TN, died December 12, 1950 in
Laurel, KY. (His parents are also listed; if you would like that
information, I can send that too.)

One child, Ethel May, is listed at this site. She was born in 1904
and died in 2005. There is more information about her, too.

I can not give you the name of the submitter of the above
information, but I can help you contact that person (via Ancestry.com)

I found this in the census records:

In the 1900 census Amy is living with her husband Thomas Walden in
Fariston, Laurel Co. KY. She is listed as being born in KY, with her
father being born in S. C. and her mother in KY. They have been
married zero years, which means they have been married less than one
year. She has had no children at that time. Thomas was born in TN,
and his father in TN and his mother in KY. He is a farmer on rented
land and Amy has no occupation. William and Elizabeth Walden, who
are most likely Thomas's parents (the family tree at Ancestry.com
says they were William and Elizabeth and lived in Fariston for the
1900 census, are on the same census page.)

Amy and Thomas are living in London, Laurel Co., KY, for the 1910
census. Thomas is still a farmer. They have been married for 11
years. This time, Amy's father is listed as born in N. C. Amy has
had five children, four are living: Mattison 9, Ethel M., 5, George,
4, and Steven, 1 and 6/12 . John Swinford is listed next, in a
separate household, born in S. C. age 81, widowed, parents born in S.
C.; his occupation is listed as Grandparent, so I am guessing he is
Amy's fathter. John Swinford has a 13 year old grandson, John
Chasteen, living with him.

There is this information from the Social Security Death Index: Amy
Craig, born 04 Jul 1880, died Jan 1978. Her last residence is listed
as Harlan, Harlan Co., KY. Her social security number was,
402-72-5313, issued in Kentucky.

Thomas Walden was born in TN; died 13 December 1950,Laurel, Kentucky.

I am not very familiar with the Swinfords from North and South
Carolina; perhaps someone else can help you with that.

Carol
I dont know a lot about GM. I know when i was a kid she lived in Cawood, Ky. When GD died she moved to Harlan, KY.
Dont know where she was born. I have her birth year as 1881. Found that date in family Bible. However that Bible was destroyer in a flood in Harlan. That is where the two husband names came from. My mother is dead that is my big problem because i believe she was the last of the kids living. Sorry I cant give u more...
