Thanks for writing Lizzie. My Swiss family seems to have originated in Switzerland near the French border. We thing a George Swiss or Suisse married a French woman and migrated across the border to France. One of his sons immigrated to the USA to Northern New Jersey.

It is relatively commen for Eastern European names to be anglosized to Swiss. There are a large number Swiss families in Michigan who were originally Swizkowski's. Nevertheless, the surname is relatively easy to research because it is not very common.

Hi Bob,

My name is Liz Abell and I live in Devon, England. My great grandmother was Rosa Frances Swiss. She was born in Turkey in 1878, where her father William George Swiss was working for a while (her mother was Emma Henderson). They then moved to Plymouth, Devon and she had 12 brothers and sisters most of whom had children, so there are quite a lots of Swisses in Devon still.

William George Swiss was born in London, son of William Swiss and Mary Cox who came from Bristol, England. He was the son of James Swiss and Charlotte, but I don't really know anything about them.

I am told that Swiss was a variation on an unpronounceable name, possibly from Germany, but it wasn't Schweiss or anything quite that obvious.

Do you think this links to your Swisses?

Well Angie, you have indeed hit upon a mystery. I do remember that some branch of the Kearny, New Jersey Swiss family did have a "cartage" business, orignally with horse and wagon that operated on Skyler Avenue. I am 71 years old and I remember my grandfather telling me about this when I was about five years old. I have run across no documentation of this busness, but I will go back and look more carefully, I would guess that we are looking at somewhere near 1890 to the early 1900's. Do you have any more information? Any fragment may help. You can contact me direct at k2ibm at comcast.net. The "at" foils spammers.

Bob Warwick

Hi! my name is angie wynne
over the weekend i was told by my aunt that we were related to the swiss family.
The swiss family owned a trucking company and when my aunt was a kid my grandpa told her that we could have been a part of that company. Story goes that my great or 2x great grandmother married a wynn(e) and she was disinherted. So i guess if you find or know of any swiss and wynn relations it would be great to discover. Thank you

It is unlikely that you will find the information that you are looking for here, because this board pertains to people who have the surname "Swiss", not those who have anything to do with Switzerland. There are other boards that deal with people who have their origins in Switzerland. Good luck with your search.

Looking for information on my great great grandmother above. We believe she left Basel about 1877 and made her way to New Jersey to join her husband John Hartman at the Sayre and Fisher Brick Co., Sayreville NJ. She traveled with her 3 small children, Frank age 5, Bertha age 2 and Elizabeth 1. If you have any information that would help us find her place of birth in Switzerland, please advise. With thanks, Robin.

Welcome SWISS Researchers

Hello Swiss family reseachers,

My name is Bob Warwick and I am the Board Administrator of the Swiss Surname board. Researching the surname "Swiss" can be a problem because of the confusion of those people are searching for the surnames of people who come from Switzerland. This board, however, only pertains to people with the last name of "Swiss". I have spent many years searching for the decendents and ancesters of John J. Swiss, born around 1828, and who settled in the area of Kearny, New Jersey after immigrating from France around 1850.

All messsages pertaining to the surname "Swiss" are welcome on this board. Many "Swiss" families had their origins in countries whose language resulted in names that were difficult to pronounce in English. These surnames were shorted to "Swiss" for convenience. I believe that my "Swiss" connection comes from an ancester who lived on the French/Swiss border, moving to France after marriage.

On with the hunt!

Bob Warwick
