I did the same thing so I know the feeling. I was going through a box of photos that were my husband's grandmother's. There was a name of a woman on them. I did a little search on the internet and found a man who had posted a picture of the same woman and had her name listed. I contacted him and found out that his mother and the woman in our photo were good friends. I had pictures he had not seen before.

In addition to posting it here, I sent a message to someone who had a public family tree with these folks in it. Turns out to be the oldest boy's grandson and I'm sending the original to his family where it belongs. The scanned photo is here for anyone else who has them in their family tree. And thanks for saying it was a nice thing-I got such a kick out of it that I think I'm going to go antiquing and look for more photos, but only ones with names on the back. :)

I found this photo in an antique shop in Palestine Illinois (not Palatine) a few years ago. When I was going through my photos I realized there was something written on the back. It says "Grandpa Sword, Sterling, Russ & Marian" I started searching on ancestry.com and found dates etc. I believe the picture was taken between 1914 and 1916. I'm posting it here for anyone who wants it for their family tree.

Laura,

I noticed in your post that you have a Hettie Sword. I have no idea if this is the same line as mine. However, I did see something, online (either familysearch.org or rootsweb.com) with a family of children that contained 5, I think, one being Hettie and another Axel.

My great grandfather, Axel Gustave Sword was born in 1862 (I have previously reported that wrongfully as 1869). I understand he emigrated to the USA, through Germany, from Sweden, in 1889. He married Matilda Jonasson who arrived in 1890.

If any of this adds up, I'd love to know. Otherwise, I have no known siblings or other relatives for Axel and Matilda. Axel came from Markaryd, Sweden. I cannot find the town I have listed for Matilda. I am not sure what I have is correct.

Oh, one more thing. I believe Axel came first to New York. Tho, I've not found anything in the Ellis Island records. He, his wife, and three children were living in Buena Vista Township, NJ during the 1900 census. So, that's 10 years after their arrival. They seem to have married and had their first child a year later.

Happy hunting,

John

Placer@me.com

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. My research shows that my great grandfather Axel Gustave Sword, b. 1869, emigrated to the USA in 1889 from Sweden through Germany.

It seems he arrived in NY. However, I've not found any sign of him in the Ellis Island records. He married within a year or so and moved to Buena Vista Township, NJ with his wife Mildred, then by 1910 was living in Northfield, MA. I know who all of his children were. I met many of them as a child.
descendant
I have yet to meet a descendant since my childhood. I've lost the trail of any of the Sword sons.

His children are:
Son: Wyckoff
Daughter: Beatrice
Daughter: Agda (Peggy)
Daughter: Ruth
Son: Stanford
Daughter: Estelle

I have descendants of the daughters in my Fam Hx. But, nothing for the sons.

Best of luck.

John

My GrtGfthr, Robert Miller Sword moved from Cap Sante, Port Neuf about 1861 to St.Catharines, Ontario. I have the whole tree from there. We suspect his father might have been a William, and I'm currently using Scotland's People site to look at wills for Kirkintilloch, where they were from. His brothers are Alexander, who settled in Iroquois County, Illinois;and James, who stayed in Scotland and was a coal merchant in Leith, where he died;his sister was Mary, who came to Illinois two years after Alexander, and she had Alexander's son (Alexander) with her. Alex Sr. never married. Alex Jr married twice. To Elizabeth Watson, Dec.5,1872,in Illinois;and later to Harmena(or Harmina) W.? and i found them in Auburn, Columbia, Oregon in the 1900 and 1910 census. They had two children, Robert and Christina. Robert married Alice V.?, and Christina married Cyril Johns. 1930 census has Cyril Johns m.to an Alice ? with children Ralph M.(3), Howard L.(1) and ? 3/12. Same census has Robert and Alice with children Roberta A.(5) and Carolyn L.(21 mos.) I don't have a date of death for Alexander Sr., who came over in 1855 and bought 160 acres in Chebanse, Iroquois Co.,Illinois. There are several records in Illinois for Watson C.Sword and Seward, who may be a child from Alexander (Jr's) first marriage. Stay in touch. W.M.

This info corresponds with much of what I've researched over the past several years. Great! I am the granddaughter of Mary Anna Sword, her dad was James Frank Sword, his dad was John Wesley Sword whose dad, I THINK, was Nathan Sword, a son of Michael Sword. I have had trouble getting documentation for DAR applicat. with "sketchy" info. I am daughter of West Point grad who is 96 yrs. old and I'm a Revolutionary War History "fanatic"
even before discovering Michael Sword. I also am an e-mail "buddy" of a Sword fmaily member. Cheers!

If so I have a picture of their Father Russell Sword and one of his Father Francis Marion Sword also. From what I've learned so far they were from the Island Creek area which should be in the Pike Co. area. As a kid I can remember my Mom's Aunt Minnie, an Aunt Veda, an Uncle Johnie, and a Uncle Marion Sword who they also called "Dicktoe". Anybody knowing any of these names I Love to get in touch with you.

This is more of the work of Charles Starr. Anna Maria Herchelrodt is a fabrication.......she did not exist in the Herchelrodt family. There are only three Sword men in the early records of WCV and RCV.........Henry Sword, Michael Sword, and Philip Sword. Records show Henry died ca.1777, Philip, age 10 was ordered by the court to have a guardian in Mar 1778 (no relationship mentioned to Henry but assumed his son), and Michael sold some of the land he inherited from Henry in 1781 (no relationship mentioned).........this is first date he is found in WCV/RCV records.

The Henry Sword who married 1833 Mary(Polly) Morgan-Justice is the son of Sarah Sword who according to story was wife of Francis Browning...they moved to Sciotto OH.

A Ruth Sword married James Barr in WCV in 1803...her parents are unknown.......she could be daughter of Michael Sword and Hannah Richardson m/1785 but only speculation based on date and time.

Most all of the stories about the Sword family in SW VA came from the erroneous genealogies of Charles Starr and are untrue..........unfortunatlely many have incorporated this false data in their genealogies without seeking proof, if so they would have discovered it to be false.

I have a actual copy of WCV Marriage record which shows Michael Sword married Hannah Richardson, the name Mutter/Moder is erroneous and is not mentioned in record. Mutter family in Russell/Washington Co VA have no record of a Hannah who married a Richardson. Hannah Mutter is a "creation" of a now deceased Salt Lake City genealogist named Charles Starr who is known for creating false genealogies for pay...........he fradulaent work includes the Taylor and Sword families in RCV as well as the Herchelrodt family....most all is fictitious.
