Sydenham -Elisabeth van Slichtenhorst

Greetings
there are earlier (2005) messages about George Sydenham born 1505 married to Elisabeth van Slichtenhorst. This is not correct.
Elisabeth van Slichtenhorst daug. of Gerrit van Slichtenhorst and Aeltje Lansing was born about 1660, she married 1) 15 Sept 1681 Nicholas William Stuyvesant widower of Maria Beekman, Stuyvesant had several Beekman children who did not live.He had three children with Elizabeth Petrus, Elisabeth and Anna (1685, 1687 and 1698) Nicholas made his will 13 Aug. 1698 and Elisabeth marries 2) George Sydenham 4 Nov. 1698.
George Sydenham was a Lt. in the English army, he arrived in Albany in 1695, he either resigned or deserted in 1697, returned to England and obtained a commission to return to Albany after June of 1698. There is no death date for him, but wife Elisabeth petitioned for "a separate maintenance from her husband George Sydenham" in 1715.
There are also court petitions pertaining to his violence at least twice from his mother in law Aelte Doors, widow in 1701 and in 1699, as well as petition against ill treatment from his wife Elisabeth in 1710
The ancestry of George Sydenham is not confirmed.
Hope this helped.
hi. I have traced this aunt and uncle sydenham in honiton in 1851 but as far as the tozers i can only find one ot two living in both honiton and gittisham! The name Pomeroy i find interesting! The manor house at Gittisham called Combe House, now a hotel, was hoome to the Putts until about 1850. The Marker family now own it but the last Putt to own it, and some 3500 acres of land in the honiton area, had a sister called Amelia living in a rather stately home in Gittisham called Pomeroy. I have also traced links with this family to Bury/Berry Pomeroy which is a village and estate not too far from Honiton. Whether there is any link between your sydenhams/tozers and this i do not know. I have found that Elizabeth Sydenham (the aunt) was thomas Tozer's brother. Ill post more if and when i find it.
Cheers for now.
Terry D
Devon, England

Hi

I would love to see some photos of the manor - have been looking all over the internet for some but hit blanks and I don't get much chance to go visiting now I am divorced with 2 kids!
My understanding is that my branch of the Sydenhams drifted off to West Sussex, around Chichester. There is I believe a very old connection in that one of the Sydenhams was bishop of Chichester in the middle ages. I also understand there is more than one link to royalty on the female line and to Francis Drake (as well as one of them being the Royal Physician to Charles II and eminent in that area).

Many thanks

Coralie
Thank you for your reply - any information you come across would be great. Mary Jane Tozer married Joseph Shepherd in Honiton in the 1870s and she gives her father's name as Thomas Tozer, farmer. I am also wondering whether the family 'Pomeroy' middle name will turn out to have a connection to a place name - either the hamlet near Gittisham and perhaps also Pomeroy in Canada which is near to where Mary's elder sister was born.
Best wishes
Abigail Shepherd

He settled near Ft. Kearney, NE, and brought his mother, brothers and sisters over.

It is said that they were Jewish, but had converted to Christianity.

I wonder if you know of this Sydenham, and could help me find Moses's father.

Hi Richard
I am descended from George Sydenham B1804 married Hannah Pole and would be delighted with any information. I have Joseph's birthdate as 26 Dec 1813, baptised in 1814. I don't have a second son named William (b 7 Apr 1811) only their first son named William (b 13 Jul 1806) (d 13 Mar 1808) so this is welcome information.
I have Sarah dying in 1844 so she was still alive when George had children Harriett 1827 & Maria 1829 to Jane. Can you elaborate on this revelation.
My email address is lois.f@bigpond.net.au
Hope to hear from you
Regards
Lois Foster

SYDENHAMS IN HONITON, DEVON

My great-grandmother Mary Jane Tozer (British Subject, born Canada) was living with John and Elizabeth Sydenham (her aunt and uncle) in Honiton in 1861 and 1871. I assume she was orphaned in Canada. The census says that Elizabeth was born in Gittisham (just outside Honiton). Does anyone know anything about these Sydenhams, can they tell me Elizabeth's maiden name?? Was it Tozer or something else?

In my family there is a tradition that the eldest child has 'Pomeroy' as a middle name, but I have not yet come across this as a surname in the family tree. I notice that there is a hamlet called Pomeroy very close to Gittisham so I'm hoping to find out if it all ties together!

Best wishes,
Abigail Shepherd

Sydenham Family - Wynford Eagle Dorset UK

Hi

Can anyone tell me anything about this family? One of my ancestors is Mary Ann Sydenham b @ 18.3.1791, daughter of William Sydenham and Elizabeth Till. She married John Howick @ 1809 in Bosham, West Sussex and died @ 31.12.1867 in Bosham.

There is a large site with the family on that I came across on the Latter Day Saints site and some of the female lineage goes back to William the Conqueror and King John, plus a few other royals and aristocracy from around Europe and the UK. My mum didn't believe it when I told her to start with.

I am unable to access any info on the ARCHON site but know there is something held at the Dorset Records Office about the family. The ancestors go back to Wynford Eagle and the surrounding area in Dorset - I would love to know what the family did and what significance they were to the Area - if any.

Many thanks

sydenham lineage

I can trace my line to John Sydenham that married Mary Poyntz about 1571. Birth dates for John is about 1542, and for Mary it is about 1558. John's father was also a John, but this is where the problem comes in. Most genealogies I can find show him to be born about 1494, and married to Ursula Brydges, who was born about 1499. While all this is possible, Ursula would be 43 at the birth of her son John. I have seen where another generation has been inserted, with a John Sydenaham, son of John and Ursula, born 1520, and married to a Grace Godolphin, and also to a Mary Blount. However, the same genealogy shows a 2nd John Sydenham born to John and Ursula, born 1528, and marrying Mary Poyntz, who is 30 years younger than him. Can anyone straighten out this mess, and is there any factual proof of any of this, via wills, etc?

Hi Katherine,

My book is actually entitled the Crabchurch Conspiracy, not 'Christchurch'. It's a rather important point in the context of the book as Crabchurch was the field password used by the royalists at the initial Battle of Weymouth which took place at night on the 9th February 1645. They used the word Crabchurch as it was an ancient area of Portland, the origin of the attack on Weymouth.

It's great to see so much interest in such a noble Dorset family.

The Sydenhams Of Wynford Eagle

The Dorset page at www.thedorsetpage.com/history has a wonderful article titled "Murder, Medicine & Misfortune" regarding William Sydenham and his famous brothers. Also Mark Vine has written a splendid book "The Christchurch Conspiracy" that has great detail also on the Sydenhams. Last but not least go to www.dorset-info.co.uk/civil-war and another great article on these famous brothers as well. All are great reads. If that isn't enough, find Sir Francis Drakes Bio and you will read about his 2nd wife Elizabeth Sydenham that gives a brief history of her wealthy family, the Sydenhams of Wynford Eagle and of Combes. So fun! My husband Paul is the G-G-G-Grandson of MaryAnn Sydenham, daughter of William John and Elizabeth Till. Hello to Coralie! Fancy meeting you here( we both belong to genesreunited.uk). I am unable to locate a copy of the 1928 book by George Sydenham that Nancy mentions, any ideas?

Richard,
The spelling of the surname may have been due to the 1776 Revolutionary War of Indenpendence from the English Rule.

It was the reason the parishes of the Church of England changed their name to the Episcapol Church. It was the same services just a name change.

So it is very likely changing the spelling of the Sydenham to Sidman was for the same reason.

I have the same delima in my Sturdivant/Studyvin line.

I hope this helps. FYI. The Crystal Palace In London was in Sydenham.

Nancy

Richard,
It is certainly food for thought. According to Evelyn Siman Wachter in the Sidman-Sidnam families of Up-State New York The first immigrant was Lt. George Sydenham b c. 161655 in Morebath, County Devon, England. Check Sydenham Familt History, by George F. Sydenham, 1928 & also check Burke's Extinct & Dormant Baronetcies, 1838. The familly goes back to Edward The Confessor 1001.

I had the 1928 family history in my hands in 1986 back at the College of William & Mary Library in Williamsburg. Since my time was short and it had no index I too down the dewey # to order on inter-library loan when I returned.
As luck would have it they couldn't find the book I was beside myself. I haven't tried to order it since but I will later in the spring.

Right now our Genealogy Society is in litigation over thepossesion of the books, microfilm we have purched over the past 22 years. The original constitution stated if the society should disband all the materials would become property of the Joplin Public Library.
We are not breaking up but the Director and the library board feel they can take over the whole thing and push us out.
It is costing several thousands of dollars but we are fighting for what we feel is rightfull ours. I have been in the society for over 15 years and worked at rumage sales and anyother money making project to fund our goals.
The trial date was to be Feb. 8 &9 but a jury trial bumped us to March 3 and if we don't go to court then it will be in April or May. I am sorry I get so tied up in this mess.

Well I hope I haven't brought you down and the info will help you.

Nancy

His life is descibed in a book which he wrote 'My Working Life' by Colonel Lord Sydenham of Combe published in 1927.

I am interested in the Sydenham family as it relates to the Winter or Wynter family. John Sydenham m. Johane Wynter, dau. of Thomas Wynter (d. 1513) and Margaret Erchdekne (d. 1509) heiress of Trebarwith in Tintagal, Cornwall. Both died in 1500's in Somerset. Her nephew Edmund Wynter or Winter, d. 1551 Somerset, son of Thomas Wynter who died same year as his father. He married heiress Eleanor Sydenham who had three manors at North Petherton, Somerset. She was the dau. of Sylvester
Sydenham a brother of John. There was also another brother named John of Chelworthy. Eleanor (Sydenham) Wynter heiress had only one child Jane, who married as a child George Rogers. Soon after Edmund (sometimes Edward)
Wynter's death Eleanor m. George Sydenham, esq. later Sir who appears to be the same as the father-in-law of Sir Francis
Drake. She appears as his first wife, and died 1558-1564
probably of childbirth.

Steve Winter
Hawthorne, NJ

Richard
The Sydenham name lends itself to variations in spelling and some 25 have been noted (which I can provide) on a variety of records. In the past not many people could read or write and therefore entries were recorded on documents phonetically and that's why you have derivations to the Sydenham name such as Sidman.

The Sydenham family can be traced back to Cheping a Saxon who held Sideham (Sydenham by Bridgwater, Somerset) in the time of Edward the Confessor. After the Conquest of England by the Normans (1066) the Saxon homestead became a Norman ville, and a Norman William held the fief under Roger Arundel. Thenceforth he was known to his over-lord, his comrades and neighbours as William de Sydenham. As years went by, his son and grandson inherited the fief, and in course of time the Saxon place name became the surname of the family, and the Sydenham family spread far and wide, and flourished exceedingly in Somerset and the neighbouring counties.

You are incorrect to state that Sidman families in Somerset changed their names in 1790 to Sydenham. I am only to happy to take you to the Somerset Record Office and show you original documents (eg parish records) with Sydenham entries pre 1790.

There are numerous Sydenhams who have emigrated from England to create new families in America and Australia. Over the 20+ years I have been tracing the Sydenham family I have been fortunate to respond to a number of enquiries from people wanting further information on their Sydenham ancestors. Although I have not received much correspondence from the States one of the most interesting letters that I have received was from a Mrs Evelyn Sidman Watchor of New Jersey - Evelyn describes a George Sydenham marrying into high society the widow of Nicholas Styvesant who was the son of Peter Styvesant (cigarette producer). I start to digrace.

Happy to provide any further information on the Sydenham family.

Regards
Kevin Sydenham

Thanks Nancy. You have been most helpful and I think also that all these theories and facts are close to the truth.
I suspect the lessor Sydenham families in the UK became Sidman and the Peerage was lost. Someone in the Church has restored the original name.
The USA situation is somewhat the reverse.
Good luck with your case as the rule of justice and fair equity seems to be on your side.

Thanks Nancy.
I read somewhere once that Sidman and Sydenham family names were mentioned in George Washington's papers so it makes sense. The Sydenhams in USA [ or some of them] changed to Sidman whilst in the UK the Church of England drove the name the other way.
Many of the Sidman families in the UK were not influential and would hardly have initiated it. Food for thought.?

My relative a George Sidman later Sydenham came to Australia in 1840. He was born Sidman in Shapwick but the family[ perhaps the Church] spelt it Sydenham after 1811. Others in Somerset changed theirs starting in 1790.I note some in NJ USA changed theirs about 1815 from Sydenham to Sidman.
Does anyone know why.
Was it linked to early USA/UK politics or the Church of the 18th Century.
It seems to be too widespread to be just a co-incedence?

I am glad I could help. The book published in 1928 would be of more help than the more current one.

Nancy

Thank you so much Nancy - that information is invaluable. I will certainly try and track down the 2 books. Elisabeth must have been a very bold woman - I didn't think divorce was not that common in Tudor times! I have heard of the Styvesant name too - aren't they a very important American family now?

I have managed to establish that one of my ancestors was William Sydenham an important Royalist in the English Civil War and I am descended from one of his younger sons who died in that conflict leaving a widow and young son. How the mighty have fallen as most of the Sydenhams in the 1800s on my side of the family were farming labourers!

Many thanks again

Coralie

Hi Coralie,
I am a direct descendant of Lt. George Sydenham b 1505 in England.
He married a Elizabeth Von Schlictenhorst Styvesant (1) in what is now New York. Her first husband was the son of Nicholas Styvesant.
They had 1 son and I am from that union. Elisabeth sued George for a divorce and won.
There have been two books published on the Sydenham family, the first was the History of the Sydenhams published in 1928 the 2 was by Evelyn Sidman Wachter published in 1980.
I hope this gives you some help.
Nancy
