I believe this is one of my great grandfather's children. My Sylvester's were from southern Indiana. My gggrandfather's name was Lemuel and my ggrandfather's name was John and my grandfather was William David. He was quite a craftsman making furniture and other household items as well as carved items.

Janice,

I believe that John Townsend Sylvester's parents are Damon Sylvester and Polly Townsend (d. of John Townsend and Mary Kingsbury). I have not found a birth record as of yet, but I did find a guardianship paper that says that John T. Sylvester was the son of Damian(sp) Sylvester.

Cindy

Samuel or Henry Sylvester

Good morning,

I am searching for information about my 3rd great grandfather, Samuel or Henry Sylvester. I know practically nothing about him.

He was born circa 1838, probably in Massachusetts. He appears as Samuel Sylvester in the 1870 census, in New Jersey with his wife, Cordelia Faber. Cordelia is not with him in 1860, so they must have been married sometime during the 1860's.

They ultimately have 1 daughter, Eloise Staley Sylvester. Eloise was born on 9 Feb 1867 and died on 26 Sep 1913.

Samuel passed away before 1885, probably before 1880. Cordelia appears on the 1880 census as 'married,' but Samuel is not with her. By the 1885 New Jersey census, she is listed as a widow.

When Eloise passes away, her death certificate lists her parents as Cordelia and Henry Sylvester.

I would appreciate any information on Samuel/Henry Sylvester.

Thank you!

Just read original e-mail from 2000. Sorry, so late! My Gr-grandfather was Joseph William (or August) Sylvester. He came from Alsace-Lorraine, France & married my gr-grandmother, Samantha Angeline Laymon around 1886. He ran away from the priesthood and I believe he came into the US by way of Canada. Somehow, he settled in Monroe, OH (Butler CO). Anyone know of any Catholic Sylvesters from that area of France in the mid 1800s? I believe he was from a well-to-do family, because the practice was for either the eldest (or the youngest???) son to go into the priesthood from such a family. Please let me know anything that might help me. Somehow, the background was fairly secretive. I figure he was a stowaway or worked on a ship aand came into the Nova Scotia area, but have found nothing so far.
Thanks for any ideas...Jan Beedle, Franklin, OH USA

Frank Sylvester- Italy to Illinois

I am a descendant of Frank Sylvester, est. birth- 1884 Italy, immigrated to the US in est. 1888. He married a Katherine or Catherine Caliendo? (not sure of spelling). They resided in Chicago IL. Frank was buried in Indiana. They had the following KNOWN children: Frankie, Mary, Angeline, Josephine, Viola, Dominick, Francis, Robert. I've seen several different spellings of the last name Sylvester, but unfortunately; I cannot find much info on Frank such as who his parents were, where in Italy they were from. If anyone could help point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. I would also like to find other relatives, Josephine was my g-grandmother. Thanks.
Kim

Looking for anyone with information about John Sylvester, son of Joseph and Louisa Sylvester and Nancy Ward Sylvester, daughter of James and Nancy Ward. They were married in 1887. They had a son, Frank in 1888 and then had a daughter Rosanna in 1889. I believe that John Sylvester was my grandfather's father. My grandfather was born in 1893 or 1894 and was adopted by a Stratton. I can find nothing about John or Nancy except for their marriage and the two children. Frank ended up in Indiana and was adopted by Joseph Fouts. Rosanna became Rosa F Robinson when she married. I am hoping someone can give me more information.

David Bigelow Sylvester in Virginia

Was wondering if anyone has heard the story of David B Sylvester m. Lucinda Giles in Virginia? David does not exist that I can find, before marriage. The family story is that he was born of a Scottish sea captain, possibly named MacIntyre, in Rhode Island (state correct by census), was a minister and kept marrying women of question, and since this was illegal would keep changing his name when he moved on to another. He supposedly had thirteen wives since he never divorced any of them. Last wife was Lucinda Giles in Rockbridge county, Virginia, where he raised a family and died. Any help would be great.

Sylvesters from Kreis Lauenburg Pomerania

We recently learned that our great-great-grandfather, Otto August Sylvester lived in Schwartow, Kreis Lauenburg, Pomerania from ca. 1850-1855 approx. This area is in extreme northeast Pomerania near the Baltic Sea. His oldest son's marriage record from 1881 states that : Albert Eduard Sylvester was born in Schwartow Kreis Lauenburg in 1850. His two younger sisters, Amelia and Henriette we assume were also born there. We are also interested in the surname EWALD from this area. Otto's wife was Pauline Ewald born in 1824. Otto was born in 1822. If anyone can provide us with
additional connections we would be extremely grateful.
I have no connection to this family. This is from the Feb. 18, 1901 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier-Gazette in the "Talk of the Town" column. I LOVE to find little tidbits of info. about someone's ancestor. Someday I'll come across one on MY family - lol.

"Otis Sylvester, who has been employed in Cobb, Butler & Co.'s shipyard is minus the end of a thumb and finger as the result of an accident which happened to him last Friday. The missing members belonged to Mr. Sylvester's left hand, but unfortunately Mr. Sylvester is left-handed."
