My family surname is Siracuse. My grandfather's name was George but he was born a Siragusa. His father came Sicily via Naples and entered the US by way of Ellis Island. Joe Siragusa was a barber in Little Italy and was one of 10 children. The family settled in the NY area and Buffalo (although my great uncle Walter moved to the Tampa area in Florida and just recently passed away).

Good luck tracing your heritage!

My grandfather, August Sibi, was adopted by a Cassenelli family in Italy (in a town near Genoa)in the 1880's and then brought to the US soon after with their other children. From what I've learned his adopted father, John, came from a large family of brothers and sisters. I always heard they went to NYC first before moving to NJ. I am still on the trail. Have you learned anything else about Cassenelli's since your posting?

James is a very popular name for the Siracuse families.
My fathers and grandfathers names were James.
They were from Buffalo, NY. Grandfather was adopted.
Most Siracuse, Syracuse, Siragusa and Siracusa families are Sicilian in decent. (Syracuse, Sicily).

If you find good records on family histories from Sicily. Would be interested in knowing where.

Also, if you run across the name Panasci (my grandmothers name)

Hi - My husband I returned about a month ago from visiting Italy and Sicily. We saw many relatives - and one took us to 3 different cemetaries where a lot of our relatives were buried. Siracusa was a very common name among those buried. We had a great time!! If you haven't been there yet, you must go - it is the most beautiful country - loaded with history too!
hope to hear from you soon
