HI David! It's good to know you are still at it too :) Still plugging at it with not much results on the Taggart's. You had presented a theory several years ago about my Alex/Mary Gleason being the second wife of Alex's after Almira Wilson. I'm beginning to consider this because I found that entry in a city directory of Hamilton about a Mary Taggart (wid of Alex) in 1888. Blows my theory about this Alex I found not passing away until 1920 being mine. The plot continues to thicken and I am stumped! What have you got and maybe we get this sorted out????

Thanks for the reply! Rhonda

Hi Rhonda.  I see you are still at it.  This is David Taggart, grandson of Albert Taggart, who is son of Alexander Taggart and Almira Wilson;

It has been awhile since we chatted. Dave

TAGGART, Alexander

I have been researching Alexander Taggart, supposedly the son of Anthony Taggart/Rachel Marr, and grandson of Alexander Taggart/Elizabeth Dougherty. I have stumbled upon some research that possibly conflicts with what I have and am asking for the message boards help with this family. A marriage certificate for an Alexander Taggart/Sarah Eliz. Boington (Boyington) for 1907 in Lincoln County states Alexander's father is Anthony Taggart. I have found in the 1888 Hamilton city Directory, the 3 boys of Alexander (Alexander, Frederick & Henry)& Mary (Gleason) Taggart. Here's the enigma - there is a Mary Taggart listed (AS WID OF Alexander). All live at the same address of 157 Bay n. This family appears in the 1881 Hamilton, census and all adds up UNTIL I found this directory listing. IF anyone researching this TAGGART family in Ontario Canada has any info that could help clear this up I would greatly appreciate hearing from you! THANKS in advance, Rhonda (Taggart) Nestell

According to my records George Washington Hickam was born 24 April 1848 in Clinton, Henry County, MO -died 22 Sept 1926 in Marion, Cole County, MIssouri. His father was John Hickam b 22 April 1813 in Ipava, Fulton County, Illinois d 18 Nov 1855 in Marion, Cole, Co, MO - he was married twice , first to Lucinda Collier on 6 August 1834 in Columbia, Boone County, Mo. His second wife was Mary Lavanna Taggart and my records have two children born to them with Mary death the same year as her second child was born.
I also have name of John's parents as William b 2 Oct 1778 - d 15 feb 1858 and his wife was Susannah (Erton?) d. 15 April 1852. Her tombstone, which is in Old Marion Cemetery, Marion, Cole county, MO said she was 81 years 5 months and 17days.
There are 7 other children buried in the cemetery that lists only Lucinda Hickam as parent spanning the years from 1847 - 1871 so it is very confusing. This must be be a different Lucinda Hickam. Also a stone with the name Lucinda Hickam b. 12 March 1867 but no death date. This probably doesn't clear up an of your question but would be happy to try to answer any you have.

About 2 years ago, I had one of my generation of Taggart males tested, and so far, we have no matches with any Taggart surname.

I read the McFarlen book on Google. It was very interesting. I cannot find anything more on Jacob either. I did find out that our family was in the Express business here in Delaware and also owned a place called Tolchester beach on the Chesapeake Bay. Calvin was partners in this resort and would take his Steamships there. It was called the Tolchester improvement Co. The funny thing is I keep boat a few miles from there.

Hi Brian and everyone,

I do hope everyone gets this, not that I have anything new to report. In fact, my GED is backed up on another computer, that isn't working.

Donna, did you get your Samuel connected to this Samuel?

Cousin Brian says, "I live in Delaware not far from Taggart Crossing", which means, Brian, you're our TAGGART Chief Researcher in Residence. ;-)

Brian, what we seen to know about Jacob Tagart of Chester County, PA c. 1727- d.1787, can be summed up by his will (available via google), his son William's grave stone, "son of Jacob Taggart and Ann Morton", and various land and court records.

William, son of Jacob, married Elizabeth McFarlan. There is a book about the McFarlan family (google) which also details much of the above, and provides the balance of what, I know, that we know (I wish I knew more).

  Hello,

Are you sure this is your family? How do you connect? According to family information and some on the internet, James came from County Antrim Ireland. His father died when he was a minor and his mother remarried. James and his sisters didn't get along with their step father. (This was during the potato famine and I suppose times were difficult). James and his sisters got passage to America and at least one sister worked as an indentured servant to pay for her passage. They arrived in Philadelphia in 1850. One sister finished her servitude and returned to Ireland to marry and raise a family there. The other two sisters and James settled near Pittsburg where the two sisters married. One of them eventually moved to Canada. James joined a group of Reformed Presbyterians who were originally from Vermont and had lived in PA for several years. They all migrated to southeastern IA and established a community there. In a few years many of the group moved to Southwest IA and settled in Harlan township in Page county. Mary Abigail WHITEHILL was among the group and a charter member of the Reformed Pres Church in Page county. James married her soon after their arrival in Page County. They are both buried in that Church cemetery in Harlan township. That is a brief and general description. I am preparing to leave this morning for Thanksgiving with my family in KS and won't be back until the first of Dec. You may contact me at ntaggart@wildblue.net. I do have more detailed info when I have time to look it up and send to you if you think this is your family.
Nita

McDonald must have died shortly afterward, as Jane was a Widow when she married Mark Allen, January 1862, in Sydney, NSW.
Mark Allen and Jane McDonald, nee Atkinson, had the following children; Thomas Allen (married Edith Louise leslie), Mark Allen (married Isabel Backhouse), Robert Allen (married Edith Mary Forster), Elizabeth Allen (married Henry Edward Wormald), Esther Allen (married Robert McCrimmon), John married Mary Horth)

Jane was born, circa 1834, to Thomas Atkinson, who is recorded as being a farmer on both the marriage entries of Jane, and Elizabeth Taggart.
Thomas Atkinson and Elizabeth taggart were married, in Ireland, between 1829 and 1834. According to Elizabeth's death certificate (informant being her son, John Atkinson) Elizabeth was 20 years of age at the time of her marriage To Thomas.
Elizabeth was born in 1809 (further details listed below) and died in 1885 (further details listed below) her age was given as 71 years, however, she was actually 76 years. So I'm wodering if she was really 20 years or 25 years at the time of marriage and said'thought she was only 20.
No further information is known, at this point, about Thomas Atkinson only that it is presumed he had died before 1856 as his wife, Elizabeth Atkinson, nee Taggart, is recorded as being a widow upon her embarkation on the ship "Persia" which arrived in Moreton Bay on 22 June 1856.
The shipping records state that Elizabeth was born in Liverpool, England, and records her age as 42 years ( she would have been 47 years - five years older), daughter of Andrew and Margaret Taggart.
Accompanying Elizabeth Atkinson, nee Taggart, on the voyage to Australia were children; Margaret Atkinson, aged 18 years ,born in Co. Armagh, Ireland, and John Atkison, aged 14 years, also born in Co. Armagh, Ireland.

Further details about Margaret are not yet known. It is presummed that she died before her Mother, as she is not mentioned on her death certificate. This will require some more time. She may have married John Roper in about 1860 in Sydney, and died in 1862, in Grafton, NSW and the possibility of a son, William H Roper, born inGrafton, NSW, in 1862...

John Atkinson married, twice, firstly to Mary Falconer Stewart, and secondly to Lydia Mary Moore, and had a number of children. He is recorded as being a shipwright, lived in Balmain from the 1860's until at least the 1880's before moving to Cronulla, where he served on the Cronulla Council in 1906. John Atkinson died at Cronulla in 1917. His home was named "Richmount" and was located on Richmount Street, Cronulla. The home and the street were named after where John was born in Co. Armagh, Ireland. Atkinson Street, Cronulla, was also named after him.

Elizabeth Taggart was born 3 July 1809, St. Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, and baptised 10 September 1809, St. Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. The daughter of Andrew Taggart (spelt Tagget) and Margaret Russell.

Jane Taggert was also recorded as being the daughter of Andrew Taggart and Margaret Russell. Jane was born 13 March 1807 and baptised 15 march 1807, also in St. Nicholas. No further details about Jane Taggart are know at the moment.

A marriage entry/record for Andrew Taggart and Margaret Russell has not been found in the available indexes for England. They may have been married in Ireland.

Elizabeth Atkinson, nee Taggart, married Robert LINTON, 25 July 1864, at 105 Princes Street, Sydney (This was the non-denominational evangelical Mariners' Church) by John Reid, .. out of intrest
Reid embodied in exaggerated form the Presbyterian concern to uphold Christ as the only king and head of the church, constantly seeking but never finding the ideal church-state relationship. He preached impressively in an old-fashioned style. His family was always involved in church life. One son, George, was premier of NSW 1894-99 and prime minister of Australia 1904-5.

I'm not sure yet about where in Sydney 105 Princes / Princess Street was. Any idea's?
Details from Robert Linton and Elizabeth Atkinson's marriage certificate are given as
Robert Linton, of Princes Street, Bachelor, born Liverpool, England, Mariner. Son of John Linton, mariner, and Betsy Allan (Actually Elizabeth Allen)
Elizabeth Atkison, of Princes Street, Widow, born Liverpool, England, House Keeper. Daughter of Andrew Taggart, Mariner, and Margaret Russell.
Witness to their marriage were Gilbert Wiley (not sure who he is, maybe a friend or other? ) and Jane Allen.. Elizabeth's daughter, and our ancestor.

Sydney Morning Herald. Friday 24 July 1874
Found. Boat. The owner can have it by paying expense. B.
It is not really Jane M Tagggart it really means Jane Mctaggart, they just put the apostrophe to show the missing c in Mc or in some cases Mac . I have Mactaggarts in Scotland in this area and you see that spelling all the time on grave stones for Mactaggarts or Mctaggarts. I have seen both spellings in all kinds of records for my family. I don't think she is in my line but I thank you for posting the photo, one never knows. Anyone doing Mactaggart or McTaggart family research in the Dumfries/Galloway area I have done a lot of research and will share what i have learned.

Jody Allen

Taggerts in AL 1830-40

Looking for info on the Taggerts in 1840 Sumter Co, AL census. I am trying to figure out who Mary Taggert could be related to; she married James A LINDSEY 1835 Sumter Co, AL. It is obvious that the 1840 Sumter Co AL Taggarts came from 1830 Pickens Co, AL. The only ones with females that could be Mary were: David F & his son John-

David F Taggart- 1830-60 Pickens Co, AL censuses; he was born c1780 Ireland; he had many children. One was John F Taggart.

John F Taggart B. c1808 SC. He was in 1830 Pickens Co, AL census also (7 homes away from his father David). By 1840 he was in Sumter Co, AL. By 1850 he was in Fayette Co, AL. By 1870 he has returned to Pickens Co, AL. Many are listing John's oldest child born 1831- but the 1830 census tells me he had possible older daughters- one of which could be MARY who married the LINDSEY.

These are the possiblities for family of Mary Taggart Lindsey. I work on LINDSEYS in this area. Have not been able to find more on this James A Lindsey- but my Lindseys were in Sumter Co, AL also in 1835. I thought maybe someone in the Taggart line could shed some light on James A Lindsey & Mary Taggart Lindsey.

There were other Taggart females who married in Sumter Co, AL 1830-50s.

These particular Taggarts are not the ones in 1830 Marengo Co, AL (John & Jacob)- these two were sons of James Taggart who died by Nov 1827 court term Marengo Co, AL. John & Jacob did not have females in their 1830 homes that could fit Mary Taggart Lindsey.

Paula in MS

(of course this includes various spellings- Tigert, Tagert.

Bitsy, That would be wonderful... if you do get a chance to ask the grandkids. Records I'm finding(some on Ancestry and some in Virgina/Kentucky courthouses show that Adelaide Rawls Taggart was daughter to Adelaide Scott Rawls (also married to an Edward, Rev. Edward Rawls) and HER mother parents were Persickless and Annie Miller Scott. My ancestor Ellen Scott was (99.99 percent certain) his younger sis. If you find out any different or additional information just reply again here or send to bonnie.winn@att.net.

Thank you!

Well, good news and bad news. Good news is that this thread is still active, and I got your inquiry! Bad news is that I can't help you much.
Aunt Adelaide was married to my great uncle, Edward Taggrt, and she is not a direct line for me. My family is pretty huge, and so I haven't yet had time to dig into the "married-ins" that are not direct ancestors. One day, I'll get around to it. Meanwhile, I think you are on the right track, and Ancestry.com has a wealth of information that you can track down. If I run across anything to help you, I'll be sure to let you know. I'll check with some of my 2nd cousins who are her grandchildren.

Good Luck!! Bitsy Fitzsimmons

Hi! I don't even know if one can reply to an archived post but I'm going to try. I am researching a "Scott" surname line and I believe that your Adelaide Scott Rawls is the daughter of my 3greatgranduncle,Persickless Scott of Lexinton KY(c. 1808-1897). Do you have any information on his parents? His mother I know was a woman named Nancy Scott but not sure who his father was. Thank you!

Hello fellow Taggart researchers. I do have a pretty good tree in my possession of the Taggarts from Donegore area of Co. Antrim. My ancestors came from there and slowly migrated to Belfast . I just do not know how to connect up who matches what in other people trees but I am more than willing to share it with any of you for a little help in return. The help being simply sharing anything you find which would connect to my tree. Easy Peasy. Regards Val Poole (Nee Taggart)

I'm researching my family and have found census record of a James Taggart (also found TaggErt) b.1834 from Ireland. Married to a Mary A. Taggart b.1842 Vermont, both living in Harlem, Page, Iowa in 1870.

They have children William, James, Thomas, Mary, Isabella, John S, and Harriet.

Anyone have relatives of these lines? I can't seem to find anything prior of James or Mary besides these census records. I would love to find their marriage or the leap from Ireland to the US. Or even a birth record.

I'd love any help!

Thanks!

Taggart family website

Back in April of 2010 I started a website on myheritage.com and developed a family tree deciated to my Taggart family. To date we have over 800 names.

My Taggart family came to Canada back in 1839 first landing in York now the Tornoto harbor. They continue to marriage and move into the Canada northern bush countries of Huron, Grey, Dufferin, Wellington, and then Thurder Bay and as far away as British Columbia and into the States. So if you have time take a look at what we have created. Thank you Darlene here is the address of my site.
http://www.myheritage.com/site-119146041/taggart-family

Thomas Tygert/Taggart and Jemima Robins/Robinson

I am trying to trace my husband's Tygert family line. I have William Thomas Tygert in Albany, 1765 or 1766 to 1841, married to Catharine Head. William Tygert's parents were Thomas Tygert/Taggard/Taggart/Taygert/Teygert and Jemima Robins/Robinson, but I have no information about them. Does anyone know anything? Did this Tygert line come from Taggart or Dygert or something else? Thanks for any help you can give.

Julie
