Hi Neville
Thanks for all this information....I am particularly interested in the George Kitching (step brother) of Thomas Henry Tait.
This is the story I have on George (grandfather) and have found very few clues until this Tait connection which my mom seems to recall.

My great grandfather Kitching came over my boat, his wife died on board. Once he reached SA he married and they had a son, George. George's father died and his mother remarried to possibly a Tait. Any help would be so much appreciated!

Taits in Unst, Shetland

I'm trying to find out more about the father's family of my great great grandfather, James William TAIT. James William was born in Unst, Shetland in 1852. His christening record lists the father as James TAIT but I haven't been able to go further back than that yet as it appears to be quite a common name.

The family story goes that James' mother Jane JOHNSON was engaged to be married & that she fell pregnant before they were married. However, James was swept overboard in a big storm on a fishing expedition to Iceland & drowned before they could get married. This would have been around the time James William was born, so sometime between 1851-52. Jane ended up living with her mother (it appears her father may have died around the same time?) for many years & remained a spinster for the remainder of her life. James William eventually emigrated to New Zealand, as did at least one other member of Jane's family.

I thought I'd post this in case it rings bells with anyone...especially in regards to the fishing boat accident. It would be very satisfying to be able to narrow down James Tait's parents.

Hi Mick
I have the original from William James Tait 26055/08. But it is all red and doesn't have family names on it just born in Lithgow 8th Aug 1908. But their wedding certificate has the grooms father's signature and that is William Ernest Kemp and Isobella (Robertson) Tait on it. You could get a copy of that, I have the original it says No 18 No.C 366120, Lots of information on this one. They were married at 'the Manse' 841 Bowden St Ryde. Thats how we put it together, and solidified it for us.But by all means get William ErnestKemp Tait's Death cert, then you will see the 2 sons William James Tait and George Hartley Tait, 2 sons.
We are lucky we have originals.
I'd say, go for William James Tait Marriage cert, its all there.
Lee

Hi Mick
That was awesome to read and see that wonderful photograph of our family mum and dad had no photo's of them. I sent away for William Ernest Kemp's death certificate and that is where I found out that he had 2 children my father William James Tait,b.1908 and George Hartley Tait b.1911.
Have you heard what happened to him. I found out he was in the Australian Army, he married Beryl Marcella Tait and lived in Cabarita. He was discharged in 15/09/1945. We can't find any information after that.
This is great, Spike has been contacting me as well, He is a descendant of your great grandmother? But I'd be keen to see a BDM Certificate that proves that it is.

NSW BMD 26055/1908 TAIT, William J (f. William EK m. When I got William Ernest Kemp Tait's death cert is where I saw he had another son,b1911 George Hartley Tait.
And served in the Australian Army. Mick has emailed us with his info and his grandfather was William Ernest Kemp Tait's brother James Thickett Tait. this is great.
Cheers Lee

Spike,

Can you have a look at your sources for the son of William Ernest Kemp TAIT & Isabella ROBERTSON?

I've ended up with 2, but I think the Right one is William John Tait b.1908 and m.1940 to Freda Muriel Provan FIRTH.

I think the wrong one has taken the TAITs to New Zealand. (William James TAIT m.1935 to Kathleen Christina Widenstrom)

I think I will need to get BDM Certs to work out if the initial 'J' is a John or a James to sort this out.

According to the census of 1901 Eugene and Clara had a son Eugene Roland born 1900. By 1911 Clara was a widow and was working as a housekeeper for a medical doctor in Islington.
Eugene was I belive using his second name Roland and in 1911, I am fairly sure he was at the Crossley and Porter Orphan Home and School in Yorkshire.
It would seem that he married Irene Savage in 1944 and died in 1977 in Hertfordshire. This all needs authenticating of course.
Hope this is of some help.
Regards Judith

Hi Tony
The only Eugene I can see born c1872 was Eugene J, son of John Tait. He was certainly the grandson of William Ironside Tait. He married Clara Miles in 1896. Euphemia was also the daughter of John and became a journalist. She remained unmarried and died in 1945.
The Taits are connected to my tree by marriage. Euphemia Tait the daughter of William Ironside married my ancestor James Hopewell.
William was a schoolmaster until 1842 when he started the Rugby Advertiser in Warwickshire. They became a very prominent family along with the Hopewells.
Dont know if this is of any use to you.
regards Judith

Hello,
My Tait family are recent arrivals in Australia in 1973.
The history of my husband's family in the late 1800's and early 1900's, is based around the Bedlington area of Northumberland. Prior to that the family lived in Islandshire in the northern coastal area of Northumberland. The family were living at Brock Mill close to the Holy Island causeway in the 1841 census. I cannot locate where they were prior to that.
His wife, Barbara Mason was a local girl born Bamburgh, abt 1806, but Thomas Tait born 1802-3, says he was born in Berwick (or Berwickshire?). The family names are Thomas, William, John, Robert, Luke, Joseph.
Can't seem to get a fix on Thomas, though someone suggested a birth reg in Channelkirk in 1802 to a James Tait and Euphans Dickson.
Does any of this sound familiar to any Tait researchers?
It is interesting to raed of other Tait families. We are not alone lol
Regards, Eileen

Hi there
Yes this is the family my PC is in for repairs..so only going by memory until it comes back. So the chance of cousins in Scotch college in Victoria is a good chance. George family has some mysteries - the whole family disappears from Census after 1861 ...one is his daughter is known to go to NZ and then Aust - back dates to 1861/1861. George and his youngest dau Agnes sails to Aust from London in 1880 to Melb..we know about 2 other daughters who lived in Australia but not the boys..anyway....that will be that. Thanks from QLD

Her Dad and sister Agnes went to Melb. in 1880. We can not track down the mother Agnes McGregor nor other kids eg Walter/Alec etc...they all seem to have disappeared. There is a Rev John Tait who was at Scott college in Victoria...one of his ons is Lithgow Tait..it is said that they were cousins to my Taits but I cannot find a link and the only other sibling to George was a girl...

My (belated) thanks for this wealth of information re Hans Tait’s family.

Another Hans Tate was born 31 Jan 1861, in Falkirk, Stirlingshire to Samuel Tate & Mary Johnstone, who married in 1852 at Downpatrick, Ireland. Their sons forenames, Hans, William, James, Samuel & Joseph correspond to those of Hans’s sons, so assume Hans & Samuel were related.

The address for Hans on the 1851 Census should read Wooer Street, Falkirk; this is a short, cobbled, lane running northerly from High Street, behind The Steeple, to Manor Street.

A Hans Tait is shown on the 1891 Census living in London, aged 40, born Scotland.

There must have been a forefather named Hans to perpetuate the name.

Attached is photo of Hans's headstone.

My grandfather - Hans Wylie Sharp always believed his name came from a Dutch uncle. It was only when my aunt started to research the family tree, that she discovered my grandfather was named after his Irish great grandfather. It would be interesting to know how an Irish man came by the name of Hans. Although my grandfather was called Hans, he was known as Harry, because it wasn't very popular to have a German sounding name during the war.
