Connection between Jane Taliaferro Craig and the family which settled in Virginia

I am descended through Toliver Taliaferro Craig, whose mother supposedly came to Virginia from Scotland with two brothers around 1704. I do not have the names of the brothers or any other information on the antecedants of this woman. She died shortly after arriving in Virginia and her son grew to manhood and became a notable member of Virginia society. My question therefore, is he related in someway to the Taliaferro's who settled Virginia?

Huummmm... Interesting comment. Well my resarch has uncovered some of the original 3rd generation of the African American line of Taliaferro/Toliver lines out of Massies Mill, Nelson, VA - Now I'm not sure if the county clerks had trouble spelling the last name (for negros), or they tried to separtate them from the white Taliaferro lines. In any event the spelling of Taliaferro was changed to Tolliver, the Toliver in the middle 1800's.

The First of the negro Taliaferro lines appears in 1870 (after black slaves recieved their last name from the overseers, owners, and farm managers. - Sophia "Sofa" Taliaferro born Jan. 1815 was a slave on the Massie Plantations called "Level Green", "Pharsalia", and "Three Springs". Her husband was Winston Shields. Their chillins were Archie, Charles, Malvinia "Viney", Winston, Moses, William, Washington, and Andrew.

I am not sure about your family history. I do know that my family is relate d to the Hardins and also to some Parkers possibly. Our family is from White Oaks, New Mexico and we do have a photo of a Richard Taliaferro in our family photos. It says Richard Taliaferro born in White Oaks, new Mexico Feb. 28th, 1886. He's a handsome cowboy on a white horse. Email me if you would like this photo. He may be a distant family member to us by way of the Hardins or Parkers and that may be why we have the photo. Not sure, but it's a great picture.

I've just sent in my bro's DNA as part of the analysis done by the National Geo./IBM Genographic Project. If there is an Italian (Tagliaferro/Taliaferro) branch of the family tree, I think it should show up on this analysis as part of the Craig family's ancestral migration thru the years. Most of this is over my head, but you can go to the NG website and get a better picture than I am painting of what info this test provides.

I am a descendant of Joseph Craig, Toliver Sr's son (the "eccentric" one). :o) I went to Scotland last summer and there is Craig "stuff" EVERYWHERE. I'm returning this summer and will be glad to do some research if I know where to go; in other words, I'm not wasting many days of vacation wandering from library to library. Let me know if you think I can help in some way. The NG analysis is supposed to take 4-6 weeks (January 2012 hopefully). Good luck. -- L J Craig

We finally located the marriage record for John R.A. Taliaferro and Disey E. S. Jenkins. They were married in Maury County, TN. John R. A. Taliaferro is buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Kimble County, Texas. His son, John K. Taliaferro married Margaret Abigail Beach in Sutton County, Texas and they lived on the Llano River in Sutton County, Texas. We find them on the Sutton County Tax rolls in the 1890's and early 1900's. By 1898, Margaret A. Taliaferro is listed as the head of household on the Sutton County Tax rolls. We think he may be buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Kimble County, near his dad, in an unmarked grave. Anyone that can help with this puzzle is appreciated.

Hi, My Great Grandmother was also Ada B. Taliaferro born in 1859 in Pike County, Missouri. She married William Pinkney Gilbert and had 5 sons: William (Bill), Joe, Ed, George, and Ruba. Her husband changed his last name to Lane because he got into some kind of trouble with the law. I don't know what that was. The whole family changed their last name to Lane except George who kept Gilbert. Ruba Lane was my grandfather. I learned most of my information from my uncle Lloyd Lane who lives in Tulsa. He is about 88 years old and was my mother's twin brother. My mother is no longer living.

Ada remarried a 2nd time to Jesse Newton who I think was a civil war veteran. They lived in Adair County, Oklahoma which is where Ada is buried. I don't know what ever happened to William Gilbert. I don't know if they divorced or he died or what before Ada married Newton. When Ada & Wm Gilbert was married, I understand that he operated some type of barge transporation up and down the Mississippi River. Just south of Hannibal, MO is a place called Gilbert's Landing in Pike County. I've often wondered if this is associated with him.
I've gotten some of my information from a book titled "the pioneers of Pike county, MO" -- or something like that. I looked at it at the library in Louisiana, Missouri or in Bowling Green, Missouri--I can't recall. This area is located on the eastern edge of Missouri along the Mississippi River.

Hope this information helps you. I would like to know what happened to William Gilbert, i.e., when he died, did the law catch up with him, family, etc. You can email me at: lena_greuel@yahoo.com

225th Anniversary Bethesda Baptist Church, near Union Point, Greene County, Georgia

Bethesda Baptist Church, east of Union Point, north of Highway 44, will be celebrating their 225th anniversay on Sunday, August 15, 2010. For more information contact the church as my information came from my cousin and is not "official." Some period dress is being encouraged, but not required to attend. She did not say of what period.
Many Taliaferro County families attended Bethesda Baptist Church. The Robinson Baptist Church was formed in part from Bethesda Baptist Church members and the old Bethesda minute book was found among its members. Please pass this announcement along to any family surname lists who might be interest in know about the event.
I published the church minutes from 1817-1865 in 1990. Copies are still available from the Chamber of Commerce in Greensboro, Georgia, or from the church. $25.00 or $30.00 mailed from me. Someone who did work at the C of C last summer is a church member and should be able to give you more definite information as the schedule for the day. My cousin said no Sunday School and services begin around 10:00. Check to be sure.
Covered dish lunch in the new (c. 2002-3) air-conditioned fellowship hall has replaced the dinner on the ground eaten outside standing up at the old wooden picnic tables. You can take your plate outside to the newer granite tables built at standing height (no seats)under a pavilion cover if you prefer shade and the out-door atmosphere. I expect someone will bring some Brunswick Stew, Bar-B-Que pork and chicken, fried chicken, all kinds of pickles, and cakes with pineapple and fresh coconut icing. I would not expect to see any Bar-B-Qued beef brisket there, either, that we get in Texas! The coleslaw will have diced sweet pickles in it. Plastic jugs of tea have also replaced the glass jars of tea that were poured over ice chipped from blocks in a #10 galvanized wash tub and served with a dipper that I remember as a child. There are now several very nice indoor restrooms.
According to the old church minutes,"THIRD SUNDAY" church homecoming followed by a revival has been held at the church since about 1834.
Please pass this reminder along to anyone you think might be interested in attending as that is the original intent of this posting. I am mentioning the church minute book only in passing to show my connection to the church. I lived there as a child, attended services and Bible School and have family buried there. I married there and have visited back, but not as often as I would like. Even though I married an East Texan and that is where we live, I will always be a "native" of Georgia. Check out my web page for the families I am researching in Wilkes, Oglethorpe,Greene, Taliaferro, Clarke, and Richmond County, Georgia.
Vivian Cates, S H 21 West, Alto, Cherokee County, Texas 1-936-858-3801 http://www.myinu.net/vcates

In regards to the father of Toliver Craig being a Taliferro male, I believe this to be untrue.

I have had my DNA tested and it does not match any branch of Taliaferros that have had theirs done.

There were likely numerous Tagliaferro families in Italy as it is a surname derived from occupation (ironworker), and thus there could have been two different lines represented in VA). They did not have to have a genetic connection to have the same name. (As was seen in a study of Jefferson families in England - not all were related to our president Thomas Jefferson.)

The parts of the story that seemed true by the grandson was the 1930s suppression of his grandfather's illegitimacy in a history of that time. People wanted illustrious ancestors.

Also a descendant of the Taliaferro Craig family, I loved that Ricardo might have been a pirate! I think there is sourced data on ship registries and owners in Nassau in that period. (Can't remember as it's been a while since I've looked at that, but will post it if found.)

Thank you for the information. I have indeed seen the Wikipedia article.

I still doubt the validity of the story of the Taliaferro man being the father of Toliver Craig. If that were the case, we would have DNA results that matched that of at least one branch of Taliaferro line which doesn't seem to be the case. The only other surnames that match are with the Freeman (12 marker exact match) and Ryeland (67 marker genetic distance of 5) surnames. Both were in the same area of Virginia as Taliaferro Craig... but that really doesn't tell us as how they intertwine. Was one of their ancestors the father of Taliaferro... or did he (or own of his sons) have an affair with one of their ancestors. Doubt we will ever know.

As for the Wikipedia article, as you said it is unsourced and therefore subject to whoever wrote the article and what they believed since anyone can write for Wikipedia. Likewise, the grandson who is attributed with the providing the story of Toliver being illegitimate could also have had his information wrong and just told those asking what he believed to be the truth which might not have been accurate. After all, I believe Taliaferro (and his mother if the story of her living after his birth) was dead by the time the question came up.

Again, we will probably never know.

But thanks again for your input! At least it shows people are still searching for the answer!

Hi - I've seen information online, including an account by a Craig descendant, that the second story is true. Jane Craig was Scottish and had an affair with an Italian sea captain, Ricardo Tagliaferro (the name was later anglicized to Taliaferro or Tolliver.) He was also described as maybe a privateer based in Nassau. She had traveled with him to the VA Colony, and never married after their son was born, whom she named Taliaferro Craig.

Saw an unsourced item on Wikipedia (in article on Taliaferro Craig) that recent DNA testing showed no connection between the males of the Craig line and those of the Robert Taliaferro family, another VA family. At one time, it was said that Ricardo and Robert were brothers, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

This wasn't exactly what you were looking for, but maybe it will help.

I cannot vouch for the truth in it, but it is a very good item, is it not?

If you noticed, I listed the names, that I consider as related to Taliaferro and its variants, that lived nearby my family names, which were Garrett, and its variations, and Rowland, etc., and others which are known by me!

So, it seems, that at one particular time, that there was the possibility that some related persons lived within a few miles of each other!

That is about the only relationship that my previous information can connect to our families!

Sorry, but I cannot know everything about all related families over a period of 300 years, or more!

Regards,

Ronald L.

Good luck in your research!

Regards,

Ronald L. Hughes

Long Beach, MS
