Greetings.
I am descended from Frank sr's brother Edward Jacob Tann. I have very limited information but I do have a good lead on their mother Carolina Mersfelder. I would be glad to talk with you about what I know if you update me What has happened on your line. The Tann's have not been the most communicative family. I believe that I have only Frank sr's children in my information.
Jeremiah Tann

I have read that the Castle still Stands in Tann. Don't know much more about the other things. I was hopping that maybe some of your information may help me pass the road block that I have. I am descended from Michael Tann b.1853 in Fulda. His father may have been Jacob Tann or Von Der Tann according to his death certificate. But I don't have his mothers name. Michael was very Catholic and his wife Carolina Mersfelder was excommunicated from her family for converting. I estimate that Jacob was born between 1810 and 1825 at the latest. Maybe you have something maybe you don't but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for any thing.

Hello
No not all Tanns are related. Tann as a surname is a place designator most of the time. There are two major branches a German and an English. Tann is related to the old Germanic word for a Fir forest. The Tann from Germany are all from the Black forest region originally and even they are not all related. The English Tanns have a similar story of living in and near a forest. And these would have been Anglo-Saxon. There may also be some English Tanns that moved from Germany as there was a lower noble family that may have intermarried with some of the English lower nobility and eventually became just part of the middle class. Many of the German Tanns were at one time called Von Tann meaning "from Tann." There is a city in Germany called Tann where there is a "castle" that the ruling family used at one point. Ultimately unlike many of the Irish surnames there is no One common progenitors for all Tanns.

In researching my Dad's family, I found Sophia Tann, originally from Gedney his grandmother. Her brother, Barnabas I have learned from another member sailed from Liverpool on the Teutonic to New York in 1892. He seems to have gone to Wisconsin, but the trail has gone cold. Can you help?

John Tann married Agnes Thornton on Sept. 1, 1617 in Great Waltham, Essex, England.

In the Suffolks Records Office is a FILE - Bundle marked:

"No.5. Writings relating to an estate in Bramford purchased of Rownings by Wm. Acton in 1737. The Gravel Pit Field etc. - ref. HA61/436/646-663 - date: 1612-1738

item: Will (dated 1 Nov. 1633 and proved 21 Feb. 1633/4) of John Tann, yeoman, of Bramford; to grandson John (son of Henry) - all real estate, other money bequests. Or is John Tann who married in 1617, perhaps, a son?

Is the grandson, John son of Henry, the son of Henry Bacon, gent. or Henry Jermy, yeoman?

Hi, I saw your email and just had to reply. I've been looking for a Tann family which started in either, N.Carolina, Kentucky or Virginia. The main person I'm searching info on is Austin Tann, son of Anthony Tann. Austin was born 1790, married a Sarah Cole, lived and died in Lawrence County, Illinois, 1865.
I've been trying to find any info at all. Are you related to this Tann family or know of someone who can help out? I sure appreciate it. My home email is, debhill197@roadrunner.com Thanks!

TANN Family of Santa Cruz, CA on 1880 Census

Still looking for information on Teresa TANN who married Ardeen (or Ardean) STARKEY on Nov. 15, 1887, in Monterey County, CA. It appears Teresa TANN STARKEY died Aug. 12, 1892 in Santa Cruz, California.

I believe I have found Teresa TANN (born about 1873 in CA) as a child on the 1880 Census in Branciforte, Santa Cruz, California. She is the daughter of:
George TANN, age 32, a blacksmith from Prussia (George's father was born in Poland).
[Note: surname is ennumerated as TAN with only one "N"]

Mother is listed as Felicity, born in France, age 25

Others in the household are children:
Leoni (or Leona) TANN, age 3 (may have married a Mr. BOYEA or BOYE);
Emile, age 2; and
George, age 10 months.

Also listed with the family is Caspar BERGEN, age 52, father-in-law, a watchman from France (so I suspect Felicity's maiden name was BERGEN).

Any information regarding Teresa and her family would be greatly appreciated.
