All baptised at St Marys in Dublin.

I am attempting to find Edward's parents. Do you see how they might br connected to any of these other families?

No, I don't know who her parents are...as per my entry of May last year on this board Stephen Tarleton and Susannah Bates had a dtr. Judith but Susannah d. in 1655 so this could not have been the Judith who was b. later and marr. John Woodson. In that small Virginia community, I presume that this Judith is somehow related to our other Tarlton line but have never been able to confirm this. Also I doubt she marr. twice as she died before John Woodson and she was only was only 19 when she gave birth to their first child Tarleton Woodson c1781 and had 7 more children. This is not a line of direct descent for our family so haven't done anymore research on it. If you ever get thru this 'brickwall' please let me know. Good Luck in your research.

The Judith woodson who is married to a William Cannon is a Woodson not a Tarleton, but the Tarleton's are married into the woodson family. There are about 3 or 4 Judith's attached to this family Through Robert Woodson and John Woodson. One of them has named a son as Tarleton or Tarlton.

Mary D Tarleton Solomons Island MD

Hi I'm a little confused about Mary Tarleton married to Philip Railey in Southern Maryland (Solomons Island) 1880 Census puts her at 20 yrs. I'm trying to verify her parents. I have some information that leads me to Solomon M. Tarleton and Isabella Spaulding (PA), but that is not clear. My mother believes that Mary's father died during the civil war which conflicts with Solomon Tarleton being alive in 1870.

I have found Mary D. Tarleton later than 1900 living with her children in Baltimore. It looks like she was married to a William Lusby in Calvert Co, MD.

I did find a Mary Tarlton (6 yo)in St. Mary's in 1870 living with her widowed mother Sarah Tarlton and a Mary Tarlton (9 yo) living with her parents James Tarlton and Mary Tarlton.

Ay help would do... Thanks.

BTW I did find Philip Railey's will on FamilySearch. He is buried at Middleham Chapel Calvert Co. MD

Steven Marquis

I am also researching Tarleton in Ireland.

This is my first foray into this line of my tree.

I am looking for a Jane Tarleton who was born in Ireland c. 1829 - that's all I have I'm afraid - other than she married another Irishman, William Lees, in Scotland in 1849 (Lanarkshire).

I am descended from her son, Alexander McCoig Lees, who went to India where he raised a family and died.

Thanks in advance for anyone who might have a connection or an idea where I might search next.

Hi Kathleen,
All I have about the Tarleton family is on that tree sent by Adam Tarleton who shares the same 4 x Gt Grandfather George Matcham Tarleton. He tells me that the whole family is there and accounted for , so I guess they ARE your family too. It took me a bit of time to unravel the children from each , but it looks as though you come from Kildare T, I could see the Maurice and Wilkinson marriages on there, but that's all I do have I'm afraid. It should show who Muriels Mother was, I haven't looked closely since I got your message, but please add it to your tree. I was very pleased to receive it myself as our branch of the Tarleton family came from India where Weldon C Tarleton stayed with the Army from 1845. My husbands Grandmother was his Grandaughter.
I hope this helps you further,
Best wishes,
Lyn

Read with interest your post with the Tarleton descendants. I am descended from Muriel Tarleton and John Maurice and would very much like to know more about Muriel's parentage.
also interested in Sarah Tarleton who was mentioned in the will of William Wilkinson of Tierhogar, Portarlington. She was his granddaughter and he asks his son to look after her with his own daughters leading me to believe her mother was a Wilkinson and her father dead by that date. Would they be of your family?

best wishes Kathleen

Thankyou so much for this information, I thought I was on the right track with Offaly, and did wonder if John Weldon and Margaret Scott may have been George Matchams parents. My husbands Gt gt Grandfather was Weldon Charles, I have his death date as 1897 in Agra, India and Sarah (Heron) as 1889. Their son George Weldon born 1859 married Mary Beatrice Borgie in 1880 and had Muriel Dorothy 1882 and Bernard Weldon 1883 in Rangoon, Burma.
Muriel married George Courtenay Latimer in 1906, son of Frederick William Latimer CIE, and Harriet Margaret( Cockburn)they had 4 sons, Dennis Frederick 1906, Terence George 1908-1940, Brian Eric 1911-1977 (my F-in-law) and Richard Bernard 1916.

I did find that William Henry received The Kings Police Medal in 1911, and that he and his family came to England later. Now I see that you are the son of Ben Drought, many things are falling into place. My F-in-law didn't talk about his family very much at all, and because of the India /Burma births etc , it has been extremely hard to gather any information about his family. We don't even know when Muriel and George Latimer died , or where ?

George Matcham and Louisa Best's marriage was 1819 in St Marylebone, her Mother was Caroline Scott, descended from William De Baliol le Scot ( supposedly younger brother of John Baliol, King of Scotland ? )they lived at Scotts Hall, Kent.

Thankyou so much once again.
Regards,
Lyn

Re: Judith Tarleton Parents

William and Mary College quarterly historical magazine, Volume 9
By College of William and Mary
Pages 254-256

WOODSON FAMILY.
In the Richmond Standard for January 17, 1880, and article appeared on the Woodson Family, prepared by Mr. R. A. Brock, of Richmond city, from data furnished him by various correspondents. The editor proposes to publish a new account based as far as practicable on the county records and other contemporary authorities, giving dates, etc. But it is fair to say that Mr. Brock's account, though apparently chiefly traditional, and without dates, has been found so trustworthy that, where the editor has found nothing in conflict with the statement, he has reprinted Mr. Brock's statement just as he has found it, indicating the same by quotations.
In the census of the inhabitants for Virginia taken in 1625, 1 JOHN WOODSON and Sarah his wife are mentioned as living at Flower de Hundred, or, as it was sometimes called, Peirsey's Hundred, on the south side of James River, in what is now Prince George county. They came to Virginia in the ship George in the year 1619. (Hotten's Emigrants to Virginia.)
According to tradition, John Woodson came from Devonshire. Owing to the loss of records, we have nothing further till about 1679, when 2 Robert2 Woodson and 3 John1 Woodson, brothers, appear among the tithables of Curls, a plantation on the north side of James River, above Flower de Hundred. Presumably they were sons of John Woodson and Sarah his wife.
According to his deposition, 2 ROBERT2 WOODSON was born in 1634. "He married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Ferris." There is a grant of land, 21 October, 1687, to Mr. Robert Woodson, Mr. Richard Ferris, Mr. Giles Carter, William Ferris and Roger Comins for 1785 acres, at White Oak Swamp, on north
side of James River, in the parish of Varina. Issue: 4 John, 5 Robert, 6 Richard, 7 Joseph, 8 Benjamin, 9 "Elizabeth," married William Lewis. In 1707, Robert Woodson, Sr., of Henrico, made a deed to his grandsons, William and Joseph Lewis. There is a nuncupative will of William Lewis, who mentions his sons William and Joseph, names wife Adding, perhaps second wife. 10 Sarah married Edward Moseley. In 1689, Robert Woodson made a deed to daughter Sarah, wife of Edward Moseley. 11 Mary married George Payne, and had (1) Josias, born October 30, 1705, (2) George, born November 21, 1707, (3) Robert, born November 16, 1709, (4) John, born December 4, 1713. (Douglas Register.) 12 "Judith married William Cannon." The Cannon family must not be confounded with Kennon family, sometimes pronounced Cannon. John Woodson, Sr., names in his will (1684) the four youngest sons of his brother Robert, viz., Robert, Richard, Joseph and Benjamin, and also cousin John Woodson. Cousin meant nephew in the seventeenth century.
4 JOHN8 WOODSON (Robert2, John1) was the "cousin" (nephew) John Woodson named in the will of John Woodson, Sr. He was a merchant and married Judith, daughter of Stephen Tarleton, of New Kent county.
Charles Van dcr Veer Woodson wrote to Mr. Brock that he had a looking-glass, framed in walnut, which bears the following inscription: "This glass belonged to Stephen Tarleton, who was my great-grandfather, and died in the year 1687. I have had the present frame put on it this 14th of December, 1794.—Charles Woodson." In 1712, Judith Woodson relinquished her dower rights in land deeded by her husband, John Woodson, merchant, of the parish and county of Henrico. He made his will in 1715, and was dead in 1716. Issue: 13 Tarleton, 14 John, 15 Robert, Jr., 16 Josiah, 17 Stephen, 18 Jacob, 19 Judith, "married Stephen Cox." The will of Stephen Cox was proved in Cumberland January 5, 1743, and names wife Judith and children Stephen, William, Josiah and Judith. 20 Elizabeth, married "John Pleasants, of Pickanockie."
The will of 14 John Woodson (approved in Goochland May 21, 1754) mentions the land his father, John Woodson, gave to his children, John, Robert, Josiah, Stephen, Judith and Elizabeth Woodson.
13 TARLETON WOODSON (John8, Robert2, John1) made a deed in 1721 in Henrico county to William Randolph for land conveyed by Nathaniel Bacon to his grandfather, Robert Woodson, in 1674. In 1735 he presented in Henrico court an account of his deceased father's estate. "He married Ursula, daughter of Charles Fleming, of New Kent county." His will was dated in Chesterfield county December 4, 1761, and names six children, 21 Charles, 22 Tarleton, 23 Susanna Pleasants, married "John Pleasants, of Pickanockie." 24 Sarah Terrill, "wife of Henry Terrill." 25 Mary Pleasants, married "John Pleasants, of Henrico." 26 Judith Cheadle, married "Thomas Cheadle," had issue George, named in will of father.
21 CHARLES WOODSON (Tarleton4, John8, Robert2, John1) "married, first, Mary, daughter of John Pleasants, whose second wife was Mary, sister of said Charles Woodson; married, second, Agnes, widow of Samuel Richardson and daughter of Joseph Parsons. Issue by Mary Pleasants. 27 Charles married Ann Trotter, and had issue, (1) Ann (2) Sarah, (3) Mary, (4) Elizabeth. Issue by Agnes Parsons, 28 George, married Sarah, daughter of Thomas Friend. Issue, (1) Margaret, (2) Caroline, (3) Charles F., married Ann Thomas, daughter of Dr. Goodridge Watson, Sr., of Prince Edward county, and moved to Missouri. 29 Tarleton, 30 Frederick, captain First Virginia State Regiment. 31 Agnes, married John Ellyson. 32 Sarah, married James Clark. She afterwards married Archibald Bolling, of Campbell Co. 33 Caroline Matilda, married Thomas Fleming Bates, and had (1) Edward Bates, attorney-general United States from Missouri. (2) Frederick, (3) James Woodson, (4) Tarleton, (5) Charles, (6) Fleming." 34 Ursula, married Francis Luddington.
22 TARLETON5 WOODSON (Tarleton4, John2, Robert2, John1), "served as major in the Continental line during the Revolution. He was made prisoner by the enemy in New York, where, as stated, he married. After the war he settled in Prince Edward county, which he frequently represented in the Legislature. He also served as major-general in the State Militia. He married Anne Van der Veer, of New York, and had issue, Charles, born 1781; died 1838; major in the war of 1812. Married Nancy Jackson, of Prince Edward county, and had issue, Mary Thompson, who married Nathaniel Venable; Tarleton, Frederick, Charles, Van der Veer, Anne Van der Veer, Elizabeth Jackson."

Hope this helps you Debra.....

Continued: The book does not say anything about Judith marrying after Robert Woodson's death, however it does cover some of the Cannon family. You can download/read the book on Google.

Sarah Tarleton Hughes, d/o Stephen Tarleton and Susanna Bates and wife if Robert Hughes, mentions a grand daughter Elizabeth Cannon in her will.

I think we're talking about two different Judith Tarletons' here. Do you have a time frame for your Judith?

Historical genealogy of the Woodsons and their connections, Part 1 By Henry Morton Woodson, page 24, plainly states that Robert Woodson, s/o John and Elizabeth Ferris married Judith Tarleton, d/o Stephen of New Kent County. Stephen's wife was Susanna Bates.

I've been researching back in my family line and I came upon Judith Tarleton. I am kin to her daughter Elizabeth Cannon. Evidently, she married a "Woodson" before she married William Cannon. When she married him, her name was Judith Woodson. Because of this, many people on ancestry have Judith Tarleton's parents as Elizabeth Ferris and Henry Woodson, however, these are her previous husband's parents. If you can help me find Judith Tarleton's real parents, please help. Thank you!

I'm looking for information on my Great Grandmother Mary Elizabeth Tarleton or Tarlton. I have her birth date 27th December 1851. She married James Henderson on 15th February 1868. It looks like they had 4 children - Lulu Etna, Millie Henderson, Thomas or Joseph Tarleton and Henry Herman. I would also like information on James Henderson born 10th July 1848. My father was named after him.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mary Jane Tarlton Moseley

Mary Jane Tarlton married John M. Moseley in KY about 1797. Much well documented information on their children and John's ancestry is available. However, I have found 20+ family trees on Rootsweb listing Mary Jane's ancestry and yet so far I haven't found anyone who can list a source.

All researchers that I have found so far are connected to Mosely's not Tarlton's. I suspect that this repeated Tarlton line all came from the same source, but since I don't know what it was I don't know if I can trust it at all or not.

The facts reported in these family trees vary very little. For the most part they claim that Mary Jane was: (1)Born in St Mary's Co. MD (2)The daughter of John and Henrietta Tarlton (3)Descended through the Tarlton line of George: James: John: John Jr. If I could find any proof at all that this could be proven I would be thrilled. Unfortunately so far I have found no one who can substantiate any of these facts, in fact quite the contrary. I have seen two Tarlton books listed as sources but I own both and can find no indications of these facts in them. In fact, they appear to be associating with a family that just doesn't fit!

I have been obsessed with genealogy for 43 years (since I was 11 years old). I understand completely how undocumented lines can be incorporated into a family file, I have more of them in my own database that I want to think about. Still, I have worked on this particular connection for about eight or nine years now and have spent many, many hours and a few real time trips trying to research it.

I would appreciate ANY information that you can give me on this line of research. I would appreciate it more than you will ever know.
My sincerest thanks!
Nancy DeVore Williams

I cannot confirm the marriage date but the year fits. Children: Louis Tarleton, b. 1859; Henrietta Tarleton, b. 07/12/1870; and Georgina Tarleton, b. 18/04/1865.

Louis was a Surgeon Major in the Indian Army and died in Anacapri on 30/03/1904.

Henrietta - no info., known only from Louis' will, therefore presumed alive in 1904.

Georgina was headmistress of Huyton College Liverpool and of Edgbaston High School. She died 22 Aug 1949 in Oxted and Limpsfield Hospital.

I have been trying to determine the relationship of Mr James Young to my family. It must have been close because Louis Tarleton left property to my great grandfather - but it is hard to be sure which James Young married Dorinda and thus what the relationship was

I happened on a copy of a newspaper page, the Tyrone Constitution said to be of 23 Feb 1855, reporting the marriage of your Dorinda. "On Tuesday, 20th inst., in Edenderry Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. William Hamilton. Mr. James Young, Master of the Omagh Workhouse, to Dorinda Sophia, only daughter of the late Capt. Tarleton, of Rathmines, Dublin".

Would appreciate confirmation that this wedding actually occurred in the year 1855, confirming the handwritten date put on the copy of this page.

Yours,
Jim

Children of John "Jackie" Tarleton/Tarlton/Talton and Mary "Polly" Parrott of Anson/Union Co NC

I am a descendant of Samuel Tarleton/Tarlton who married Salina Williams 29 Sept 1859. He is supposedly a son of John "Jackie" Tarleton/Tarlton and Mary "Polly" Parrott.
I have seen many lists of the children of John and Mary, but can find nothing at all with any proof. Does any exist?

The census of 1850 lists John and Mary as John and Mary Talton both age 54 in Union Co., NC and they are living with a Pleasant and Nancy (can't make out the last name) both age 28. That age fits in with the age I have seen for daughter Nancy Serena, but husband Perry Williams still lives with his mother.
The Talton children are listed as:
Caroline age 21
Dorena (I'm assuming that's Drucilla?) age 18
Hector? F age 14
Caldwell age 13
Nig age 12
Jeb? age 8 and listed as idiotic, deaf and dumb
Sibley age 3

On the 1860 census Union Co., NC they are:
John Tarlton age 62
Mary age 60
Franklin age 23 (is this Hector F from 1850?)
Jethro age 17 (this HAS to be Jeb from 1850)
Peoples age 11 (who we all seem to know is Sibley) and
Nelly Ramsey age 16 domestic

There are a few things that confuse me.

1) I have never seen mention of Jethro anywhere in any genealogy. It is obvious that he was there.

2)Who is Nig in 1850? Could this be my Samuel? His birth date is about 1838, I have him as 1842, but in the 1860 census he is with his wife Salina and her parents and it says 1840. It looks to me like the 1850 dates are mostly wrong?

3) I haven't ever seen a genealogy with a Hector? or a Franklin listed as a child of John and Mary? Who is he?

I have seen many other names listed as siblings. I have found some and not found others. I know I have never found anything at all that for sure links my Samuel with this family. It's like he appeared out of nowhere on 29 Sept 1859 and disappeared again after 1 June 1860.

Thanks for your time.
Love,
Barb

I dont know about this Jerome, he isnt in my research.

I just knew he was not the son of Basil Tarleton the 1st.

Also the marriage date would make this Jerome Tarlton, probably closer to the age of Basil and not his children, considering Basil married Sarah Haywood in 1838, And this Jerome married Mary Haywood in 1839.

Does this lady know if this Mary and Elizabeth Haywood are Sarah Haywoods sisters?

This Jerome more that likely, is probably part of the other Tarlton family that has been researched and put in the book. (My Tarlton family (Basil Tarleton) has not been connected to them yet, although there is speculation that the son Thomas from the book, who only got 1 shilling may have been Basil's father.)

I just dont see a connection what so ever.

I do believe the Tarleton's (Tarlton's) that have been researched and placed in the Tarleton book have Haywoods in it also.

I have been hoping the lady that responded to my thread back in January of 06 would get back to me. She thinks Basil is the Son of Thomas Tarleton and this Thomas Tarleton was the son of Moses Tarleton and Eleanor Joy. I do believe that a Thomas Tarleton was the father of Basil, and I have his wife as being a Catherine. This Thomas Tarleton died in 1840 and Catherine in 1820.

I am very curious to see where she came up with that information. There were a couple other Tarletons from the DC area named Hugh and Jared.
