Hi Malcolm

Thanks for that - yes, the same man. I have the following:

Edward Tarry, Manufacturers’ Agent

Edward (Ted) Tarry was married to Clara Harvey, niece of Joseph W Mansfield, daughter of his sister Emma. They emigrated to Canada before the war (letters from J W Mansfield from Vancouver in 1937). His business was at 501 Bower Buildings, 543 Granville Street, Vancouver in 1948. He was a member of the British Textile Agents Association of Canada (Established 1903).

Residence was at 2226 West 21st Avenue, Vancouver.

Edward was born in Leicester in 1888, at 248 Birstall Street (1891 Census). He had moved to 135 Birstall St in the 1901 Census. His occupation then at the age of 13 was Branket Maker (i.e. Blanket).

Amongst his agencies were:

Messrs. Kelsall & Kemp (Flannels), Rochdale, Yorkshire UK.
By the outbreak of (2nd World) war Kelsall & Kemp had delivered enough material to the Armed Services to make 800,000 shirts for troops. By the time of Dunkirk they had delivered over 8,000,000 yards of flannel, enough to make two and three quarter million shirts! It is estimated that altogether they produced between 12,000 & 15,000 miles of fabric. They opened the first cotton mill in Australia in Launceston, Tasmania in 1920.

John S Brown & Sons Ltd, 91 Wellington Street W, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Irish Linen company.

Boulton Bros Ltd, Leighbridge, Wilts, UK.

At about the time that the smaller cloth mills were closing down, tanning and gloving became established in Westbury as factory organized industries, although both had undoubtedly been carried on domestically from a much earlier date. The new concerns of the late 19th century were encouraged by the accommodation afforded in the disused mills, and the plentiful supply of suitable labour. The somewhat complex history of these concerns has been told in another volume of the History and it will only be summarized here. William Boulton, 'master glover', and inventor of the Boulton Cut Thumb, founded the firm of Boultons at Westbury Leigh some time before 1871. (fn. 35) His sons were trading as Boulton Bros. in 1889. In 1901 the firm, manufacturers of various types of gloves, was incorporated and acquired Ball's Mill at Westbury Leigh. (fn. 36) A new factory was built beside the mill, and this the firm still occupied in 1960. The firm experienced considerable difficulties after the First World War and the number of people employed fell severely. It re-established itself during the 1920's and in 1952 was employing an average of 120 men and women in the factory, and about 300 women outworkers. From: 'Westbury: Industry and trade', A History of the County of Wiltshire: Volume 8: Warminster, Westbury and Whorwellsdown Hundreds (1965), pp. 168-172. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=16099. Date accessed: 24 September 2008.

Joseph W Mansfield was my grandfather, so Clara would be a sort of cousin.

I wll make a note of what you said - thanks for taking the trouble.

I don't know the name of Clara's father and only know about Ted & Clara's son Jack. Were there any other offspring that you know of? A sister, maybe? If so, she probably married George Robinson of Vancouver, who died circa 2005 in his 80s.

Regards & thanks

David

Hi, Thanks for your message. I have a Edward Tarry (b. abt 1887 Leicester, England)He was my 2nd cousin 1x removed on my fathers side. His parents were Abraham Tarry and Louisa Holmes, and Edward is with them at 135 Birstall St, Leicester (as a blanket maker) in the 1901 census. I don't have confirmation yet that they are the same person, but there is a 1911 census for a Edward Tarry with wife Clara born (1888 Leics) at 3 Marshall St, Leicester who was an Hosiery Manufacturers Orderman. The census image has them married "under 1 yr" so this would be married GRO reference Dec 1910 Leicester 7a 656 , with the bride (probably) Clara C HARVEY. He is a VERY interesting man, and his WW1 military records are on on Ancestry. He was the US/Canada representative of N. Corah & Sons, a leading clothing manufacturer and also survived the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915. I will let you know direct through the message system when I find out who Edward and Clara fathers were. Best wishes, Malcolm

Percy William Tarry was born in 1901 in Sussex. I have found him on a passenger list to Canada in January 1925 on his way to the USm which the passenger list details. One family story is that the border to the US was closed and his mother sent him money to return home. Another is that he stayed in the US for about 3 yrs and returned to the UK via a German cattle boat. I have been unable to find any records of when he returned to the UK. Can anyone suggest how to search form passengers coming into the UK> Thanks.

Hi, Many thanks for your message. I am a G Grandson of Annie Tarry (1841-1918) who was the youngest of Edwards' siblings. Annie married Joseph Ward at St. Margarets Church, Leicester on 6 Feb 1859. I would be delighted to share my records with both yourself and your daughter-in-law. If you would be kind enough to contact me through the Ancestry confidential message system (my username is malcolm1585) I can give you my email address. I often write to a couple of descendants of Harriet Tarry in the USA , and I am sure that they would be very interested to hear of your daughter-in-laws' connection. In the meantime, my tree on Ancestry.co.uk , Malcolm Ward (Revised Copy) , is public so please feel free to use the data as you wish.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Kind regards,
Malcolm

I'm looking for any Tarry men who have had a y-chromosome DNA test. Comparing our results would prove relatedness. I'm especially in need of men from the British Isles. If you haven't been tested, I hope you will consider this useful tool. Testing is easy and relatively inexpensive.

Shane

Hi Debs, Thanks for your response to my message. Annie Tarry was my paternal Great Grandmother. I now have copies of her birth, marriage and death certificates, plus census records etc. You may know that John Tarry and Ann Hopewell had a large family, which included an early settler to Utah, USA (Harriet) and a convict transported to Tasmania (Timothy). Possibly due to the interest in Harriet , this part of the Tarry line seems well documented by the LDS. I did notice however that there were some inaccuaracies on RootsWeb which prompted me to post the message hoping to get a response from someone in the USA. Would very much like to learn more of the Hopewell line, and would be delighted to exchange information with you. Regards Malcolm

Obit: Gladys TARRY bn 1904 London, ENG, died 1995 Canada

The following obituary was published in the Vancouver Sun newspaper (British Columbia, Canada) on 29 December 1995. Every effort was made to record this info accurately but, if you have a connection to this family, please verify the info in the original source.
Condolences go out to the family for their loss.

TARRY -- Gladys passed away December 26, 1995 at the Burnaby General Hospital from a heart attack, at the age of 91. She was born on July 31, 1904 in London, England and came to Canada in 1952 to manage a drycleaning store. She later entered the insurance business and for the last 3 years was employed as a Secretary for the Salvation Army until the age of 69. Gladys had many talents which she employed to the full. She was a soprano soloist who performed in opera and for many church congregations since the age of 16. She continued to sing until the age of 86. Gladys enjoyed writing, had short stories published in magazines and wrote many religious tracts. She loved to draw and her art covered her walls and were gifts for all of us. She was a long-time member of the congregation of Faith Baptist Church and a resident of Southview Lodge. We thank the members of her church and employees of Southview Lodge for all the care and consideration they showed her over the years. Gladys was a lively and beautiful lady until the end, who brightened every room she entered and will be terribly missed by many people. She is survived by her daughter, Janet LANCEY; her granddaughter, Christine ALLEN and grandson, Shayne LANCEY; and 3 great-grandsons. A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Baptist Church, 2551 East 49th Street, Vancouver on Saturday, Decemer 30, 1995 at 1:30 p.m. Donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

END

Re: Tarry family of Leicester and Harriet Tarry of Utah USA

Hi Julie, We do indeed have an Edward Tarry (b. 1/8/1832 Leicester, d. 30 Jun 1887). He was the brother my paternal Great- Grandmother Annie (there had also been an Ann who died earlier). Their parents were John Tarry (b. 7 Aug 1794 Crick, Northants) and Ann Hopewell who married at St Margarets Leicester on 12 Oct 1818. We have just started on the Tarry line and are indebted and acknowledge the contribution by members of the LDS church via the FamilySearch website. The Tarry line is well researched because Annie's sister, Harriet, was a Mormon and migrated to Utah in the 1860s (I think), "wild west country" !. She married a Hines. We also have a family history of a female member of the family migrating to New Zealand sometime in the 19th -early 20th century but we havent progressed with this line of enquiry. My present family have actually met members of the LDS who were very knowledgeable about the Ward and Tarry line so we are quite comfortable with precise dates given. I was raised in Leicester and can say that place names mentioned generally make sense. Annies husband (my G Grandfather) was Joseph Ward. I haven't got round to sorting out a GEDCOM file yet but will be pleased to assist with your Tarry / Ward queries via e-mail. Very excited to find Annies nephews/neices! Incidently, I seem to remember on the Ellis Island (New York) website a reference to a Frederick (? George) Tarry from Leicester age 32 travelling on the SS Luscitania in 1906 , any relation ?
Hi Shane
Just started to trace my family tree today. My nan's name was Hilda Maud Tarry born on 24/6/21 in Islington, London. She had a sister called Winifred and brother Charles. Their dad's name was Albert Charles Tarry and their mum's maiden name was Elizabeth Alice Cutting. Do any of these names ring any bells with you?

Thanks
Sharon

Perhaps we can share our information. I live in the US, but my ancestors were from the London area. I know for certain they lived in the St. Giles Cripplegate area and South Mimms in the early 1700's. I have records that show Tarrys in the same general area as far back as 1170. Though I can't prove these people were related, I believe they were, unless proven otherwise. I also feel pretty certain the family were Normans, perhaps coming from an area in Caen know as the Bourg de Thierry. It's all guesswork at this point, hopefully someday I'll have more proof. I'd be interested in hearing what you know about your ancestors.

Best regards,

Shane Tarry
