Yes, I am George wife. I remember your Granddad at our gatherings. I finished a booklet on George's mother and did a research on the McMillan family back to their roots in Scotland. I sent a copy of the booklet to Dorothy Nelle.
I would love to visit with your Grandfather, I live in McKinney Texas in a retirement community. My phone number is 214 544 7141. If I had one of your email addresses I could send you the research I did. I am no longer on Ancestry. com I am pleased they sent this to me. My email is sah193@juno.com It was good to hear from you, Selma Higginbotham

I just found a tree listing this marriage. She is the mother of Henry G. Hodge, my mother's father... Sooooooo somehow there was a second marriage that none of us ever knew about. I grew up visiting Mary, Gertrude, Bryant (Uncle Duck - an avid golfer) but I never heard that their mother had remarried and had more children. So my mom and aunt Bev have another aunt and uncle! And cousins!! That is so exciting.

Marcus and Alice died in El Reno, Canadian County, Oklahoma.
My theory is that Alice was the daughter of Joseph Henry Brearley and his first wife, Atlantic E. Truett who lived in Norristown, Pope County, Arkansas. Looking for proof either way. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Thomas T. Tate Claiborne County Tennessee

I don't know Thomas specifically, but I know of two Tate families in Claiborne Co. of that time period that you need to check. One is the Samuel Tate family that came from NC and moved on to Overton Co., Tn and the John Tate family that moved to Monroe Co., Indiana by 1822. One of the best ways to check if Thomas is in one of these families is through DNA. Both families have descendants that have taken the yDNA test (which determined they are in no way related to each other) and one descendant of the John Tate family has taken the autosomal DNA test (called Family Finder at Family Tree DNA). Hope you can connect to one of these families. Alan Tate

thank you for posting this information. I have done a study of the Tate and McMillan family of VanAlstyne, Texas. I am now trying to find the Uncle of Ruby Mae McMillan Higginbotham that wrote an early Texas Text book that they used in School. The Tate family has a lot of history in teaching and school administration and I am trying to find more about that history. It might come from one of the childrn of D.K. Tates parents for tht would be an uncle to Ruby, Jim, Lorene and Marie. Thank you, Selma sah315@juno.com
The family reunion is going to be held the seoond weekend in June which is father's day weekend. It has been a tradition of our family for years. My Cousin Bubba is the oldest living family member. He was raised by great uncle. C.L. Tate in Fountain, Alabama. We are having the reunion in Pensacola, Florida, which is about an hour and a half from Monroe County. My nephew and his wife recently had a son who looks like the Tate men. He looks like a white baby. Everyone says he looks like the Tate family. He does. He looks white. I have to smile because he looks like my son when he was born. Although, I was married to a dark-skinned black man, when our child was born he looked white. Those Tate genes run deep. I love getting together with my family. I like to look around the table at how far we have come from that plantation in Wilcox County Alabama.

Hello, the plantation house now sits in Monroe County Alabama in a place call Uriah, Alabama. I had the pleasure to visit the house when it was owned by an Alabama Senator who has sinced died. One Thansgiving holiday, I just dropped by and they were eating ham and biscuits. The house has been purchased by someone else but still sits in Uraih. The Senator had the house moved from Wilcox County to Uriah. My ancestors were once slaves on that plantation in Wilcox County. They moved to Monroe County to work. My father was a Tate and his people could pass for white. Our family range in colors from pale white to black. We are having a family reunion in June. Stay in touch. You are invited to the family reunion.

Re: Spencer White Tate

Hi Jane,

Not sure if you're still researching this family, but I am too. I believe my Francis Marion Lock(e) was related to Nancy Jane Lock(e) who married Spencer White Tate. I have no hard evidence of this, but many reasons to believe there is a connection. So, I've been looking into this family trying to find any other clues to help me connect the two.

From what I have found, Spencer Tate was born in, or around, Washington, VA around 1844. He is there on the 1850 census with James and Martha Tate (parents I believe), and Freemon Tate (probably his younger brother). In 1862, he enlisted to fight in the Civil War, in Oregon County, Missouri. After the war, he married Nancy Jane Lock in Texas County, MO. Her family is in Texas County as far back as the 1850 U.S. census. Her parents, John Lock(e) and Sarah Martin, were born and married in Indiana, then moved to Illinois, before settling in Missouri. Not sure where everyone went after the war, except for Nancy Jane and Francis Marion (if it is a true connection).

Francis Marion Lock(e) was my Great-Great-Granfather. He was blind and sent to live at the Arkansas School for the Blind sometime after the war. He met his wife, Nancy Elizabeth Vines in AR and they had 4 children. They moved to Texas around 1898 and traveled around. He was a piano teacher and preacher who traveled from town to town.

I have a little more information I would be happy to share, and would love to see if you have anything else on the Tate/Lock(e) families.
