I had a Great Grandfather born in 1903 or 04 (nobody ever knew because there was confusion about his birth certificate) His name was Robert Carl Esmond Taylor. None of us knew about the name "Carl" until he died in 1987. I can't find anything online about his life or his death, but I did find a public records site that listed some of his relatives. I knew two of them, but not the other two, Delores and Sue Jane Taylor. ???

I regretfully have to say my time is up. I did just put in Taylor Illinois 1820 since I found Sidney Ira sometimes said his Mother was born in ILL and I found an Ellen who had died of Typhoid fever and all I can find is she was from England and no other records but on one of the lists for mortality it shows her husband William also died. Very sad. My Grandfather was named William. I guess this is something I had in the back of my mind for a long time. Not going to take this off because I will be back and maybe someday someone will see this. Sadly, Clarissa
Colonel Walter Taylor and his wife, Daisy White Taylor died on July 3, 1965 in a house fire. Colonel had gone downstairs to add fuel to the fire. It is believed that one of the coals fell out of the stove and set the house on fire. Their sons Lee and E.C. (this is what we call them) were away at an institution. Both of the boys are labeled mentally retarded. Lee is moderately and has remained institutionalized. E.C. has an apartment and is able to live on his own in an assisted-living type of apartment building. I just saw E.C. last month at the Taylor reunion.
Roy and Mae, Colonel's brother and sister-in-law took over the care of the boys when Colonel and Daisy died.

How are you related?

TAYLOR of Prudence Island, RI & Amsterdam and Brownville, NY

Hi,

I am trying to ascertain whether the Benjamin TAYLOR born 8 January 1761 at Little Compton, Newport Co., RI to William TAYLOR and Deborah GRAY might be the same Benjamin Taylor who died sometime in the late 1820's in the Town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, after a brief stay in Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., New York.

The Benjamin Taylor born 1761 at Little Compton married Elizabeth GRINNELL at Little Compton on 23 December 1784 according to vital records.

There is on record the death of a Benjamin Taylor at Hopkinton, RI on 11 August 1803 and I have seen several online family trees that assume this is the son of William & Deborah. I think the reason why researchers have made this assumption is because William Taylor did not mention his son Benjamin in his will -- this could mean Benjamin was dead, but it could also mean Benjamin no longer lived in the area so there was no point leaving him a legacy as he wouldn't be able to claim it.

In fact, I have seen evidence that the Benjamin who died in 1803 in Hopkinton was actually the son of Humphrey TAYLOR and Martha WOOD who lived at Hopkinton; and that Benjamin was married to a different woman, not Elizabeth GRINNELL.

So that leaves Benjamin Taylor, husband of Elizabeth Grinnell and son of William & Deborah unaccounted for in the death records of Rhode Island to my knowledge.

So....

In Jefferson County, New York, a Benjamin Taylor born around the early 1760s according to census estimates shows up in the 1820 census, along with a Peter Taylor born about 1765, and a Richard Taylor born about 1751. This Benjamin Taylor's descendants reported that their father was born in Rhode Island.

Beforehand, this Benjamin Taylor was living from at least 1794 until after 1810 in Amsterdamn, Montgomery Co., New York next door to John Pearce ALLIN, who had moved there from Prudence Island, Town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a son of James ALLEN and Martha PEARCE (who also moved from Prudence Island to Amsterdam).

James Allen and Martha Pearce had a son Cyrus Allen, born 1765 at Portsmouth, a sailor, who died in 1799. Before he died, he married Juliana A. TAYLOR, born about 1771 in Rhode Island, and they had a son named Cyrus Allen. After Cyrus Sr.'s death, Juliana married Benjamin PRYOR. Interestingly, Benjamin PRYOR and Juliana TAYLOR moved to Town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York as well, where they died. One online researcher has even identified Juliana as the daughter of the Richard TAYLOR born 1751 in Rhode Island who was enumerated near Benjamin in the censuses of Brownville (they cite no source however).

Add to this mix that Peter TAYLOR, aforementioned, appears in the censues of both Amsterdam and Brownville next to Bejmain Taylor. The name Peter is significant because it was the name of another son of William and Deborah. And I find two Peter Taylors, one fitting the age the man in Amsterdam and Browville, living on Prudence Island, Town of Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI, next to an ALLIN family in the 1790 census -- the same ALLIN family that ends up in Amsterdam, New York!

All of this evidence suggests that:
- there was a close relationship between Benjamin, Richard and Peter Taylor
- these Taylors were from Rhode Island
- these Taylors were closely associated to the ALLEN / ALLIN family of Prudence Island, town of Portsmouth

From what I can discover online, the Taylors of Prudence Island were from the same family as the Taylors of Little Compton. Which leads me back to my original question:

Could Benjamin Taylor of Amsterdam and Brownville be the son of William Taylor & Deborah Gray born in 1761 whose death is not recorded in Rhode Island? If they weren't his parents, then who?

Further, how are Peter and Richard related? Brothers, cousins or uncles?

I would appreciate any and all help! Including names of researchers both free or for hire that could dig into the Little Compton and Portsmouth records to answer these questions.

Thanks!
Mark

Re: Taylor family in Stanly County, NC

Thanks Peggy. I found the burial info for Jesse and Mandy on Find A Grave, and I also found a detailed list of their children, supported by the 1910 & 1920 Stanly Co, NC Census:

Alfred Alexander Taylor
Martha Elizabeth Taylor
Shepherd Lee Taylor
Daisy Ella Taylor
Silas Washington Taylor
Grace Victoria Taylor
Arlie Luther Taylor
Jemmie Estelle Taylor
Bertha Ina Taylor
Ernest Grover Taylor
Grady Edgar Taylor

However, I have not yet found any census reference to Joseph/Jesse/Allen Taylor in the1860, 1870, or 1889 Census'.

According to the 1929 Stanly Co, NC Death Certificate of Jessie A. Taylor, his father was Thomas, but no place of birth was given, nor any maternal info whatsoever. As such, I can't seem to break down the barriers to finding the ancestry of Jesse Allen Taylor.

Any suggestions or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Stan Bevers

scbevers@comcast.net

I have just started researching this family for a friend. My friend descends from Jesse Allen Taylor & Amanda Frances Crisco. I would appreciate any info you might have, as I do not immediately see many clues in the pre-1900 Census records.

Thanks.

Stan

My time here on Ancestry is going by way to quickly. No further except for today I found an I Taylor in the Civil War that interests me. He was born in 1802 or 1794. How could he have been in the Cavalry reserves and ended up a POW? I already have posted on a Civl War board. Monroe County, Mississipp between the two places I have looked really hard Lowndes and Itawamba. Hate to leave without knowing but it's looking that way. Thanks for reading.

I'm curious to know if anyone has made progress on Phineas Blood Taylor.
Everyone may already know this, but on the census taker in 1871 noted in the far right column of Sarah Taylor's entry "husband left home ten years agow (sic), has? the last bit is indecipherable. Does anyone have an idea what it says?
if the 'w' is a shorthand for 'wife' perhaps it means that Sarah 'has' ? (at first I thought it said tuberculosis)

I'm researching the property that my present home was once a part of--looking for photos or other info about the farm owned and worked by Harvey Clark(e) Taylor & wife Katherine Jennie Toren Taylor from c1919-c1950. They had a daughter, Frances, who married Lyle Bennett.

Re: Sidney Ira Taylor b. Mississippi 1838

Update. Still looking but having to take care of my other families. Found a new Civil War record for Ira his middle name. It's very similar to S. Taylor but has him placed in Loundes County, Mississippi where I now am able to find him in an 1860 census. They called his wife Mrs. Taylor. Had not thought of that one. Crawfordsville, MS at least in 1860. Columbus near by has some families I am looking into. Would love to know where he came from. Mother and Father's names. 1850 only census that I can find a Sidney close to his age have him living with a famiy while a student and makes him b in 1834 instead of 1838 so not sure about that one. Any ideas of ways I can look for him?
5th May 1874, E.R. Porter (Brides Name) married R. Taylor in Lauderdale, Mississippi. In the 1880 Mississippi census for Newton County , M.E. Taylor is the spouse of W.R. Taylor and they have 2 sons, W.M. Taylor 1878 and Walter T. Taylor 1879.

In the 1900 Mississippi census for Newton County, the Martha E. Taylor 1860 and William R. Taylor 1856 family has an additional 5 children after Walter T. Taylor and W.M. Taylor 1878 is no longer a household member.

Walter T. Taylor 1879 M
Leander Taylor 1885 M
Thomas I Taylor 1887 M
Jessie C Taylor 1890 M
Raley A. Taylor 1892 M (Raleigh, Riley, Reilly, Ruby)?
Attie M. Taylor 1908 M (Herchel in 1910?)

1930 Mississippi census for Newton County, Marthia E Taylor and William R Taylor;

Emerly S Taylor 1903 F ( Irene in 1910?)

The Benjamin W. F. Porter and Martha E./William R. Taylor families spent 70 years in the same Southeastern Mississippi area (Neshoba, Newton, Kemper, Lauderdale), and I believe they maintained a relationship with each other, but communications with that area is extremely difficult. Any help from that area, or descendants of any of these 2 families would be appreciated.

Coochiecat
