I know you posted your message 5 years ago but I'm hoping you are still a member of ancestry and are still researching.

I am related to a Christian Tebbs. She was born in 1803 and died in 1860. On her census returns she says she is from Sileby in Leicestershire but, unfortunately, I can't find any baptism record for her there. I do know she married John Potter, of Sileby, on the 24 Dec 1820 in Sileby and she and John had 9 children. They remained in Sileby all their lives and both are buried at the local church. Unfortunately I know nothing else of Christian (or is it Christine/Christiana?) and so wondered if you had a Christian Tebbs in your family research that might fit.

My husband no longer has an account so he has asked me to reply to you regarding your post. I looked at our Tebbs info and there is a Francis Robert Tebbs but the birth and death dates and location does not match up so I don't think there's a connection. Our Francis Robert Tebbs was b. 1925 and died 1983 in Yarm, Yorkshire. Our Tebbs line mainly stayed in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

I believe that Charles Earnest Tebbs was the 2nd son of Charles Harding Tebbs (b 1/4 1841)and his wife Lillian Marie D'Almaine (b1849). (using 1/4 meaning first quarter).
They emigrated to CA in 1888 and CHT appears in a book of Northern CA composers.

CHT was the grandson of William Tebbs and Mary Virtue(?maiden name?)

I would love to find more details of William T

Neil

Hi Lucy,

Thank you for your query. I have lots of information on William Tebbs and his family. William married twice, first to Mary Heath and second to Victoria Haislip. Three known children were born from his first marriage [Daniel Heath Tebbs, Judith Heath Tebbs and George Tebbs], and two children from his second marriage [Victoria Tebbs and William Henry Tebbs]. I assume you descend from William's daughter Judith Tebbs, who married Robert Young. If you know which of Robert and Judith's children you descend from I can send you some more detailed information. You can contact me directly at JFKebler@aol.com.

Thanks,

John Kebler
Bethesda, Maryland

I show him married to Mary Heath with a daughter Judith Heath Tebbs who married Robert Young Sr.
Also, I show Robert's father Thomas Young married to Margaret Tebbs.
Hi Kay,

Thanks for your reply to my post of five years ago. Not many seem to be using this forum.

There has been a lot of research done on the descendents of Daniel and Chalotte Foushee Tebbs, but very little is known about their progenitors. The information I have is that Daniel's father was also a Daniel Tebbs, married to Elenor (don't know her maiden name). His father, Daniel was born in England 1643 and came to America in 1677 with his son, Daniel who was also born in England in 1663. We have very little information about Daniel and Elenor. A deposition taken 8/13/1713 states that Daniel worked for his "master" Isaac Allerton. He may have been an indentured servant to Isaac Allerton. In 1704 he claimed the right to land in Virginia for importing two people, Daniel Tebbs (probably his son) and George Orbham. Daniel Tebbs owned quite a bit of land in Virginia, about 40 miles East of Richmond.

Daniel Tebbs did marry Charlotte Foushee (born 6/5/1692 in Richamond County, VA) about 1708. She was the daughter of James and Mary Foushee. They were from France, or more precisly the Channel Islands which were part of France then. Yes, they were Huguenots. They lived very close to the Tebbs farm on the banks of the Rappahannock Riverin Richmond County. Later Daniel received some land further west in Viriginia in what is now Prince William County. The land is near Brentsville, not far from Manassa. I was in Virigina a few years ago and found both of these tracts of land. This land was handed down to following generations of Tebbs.

My ancestral line is: Daniel, Daniel, William, William Henry, Daniel Foushee, Fielding Burnes Tebbs, and Ruth Tebbs (my mother). William Henry Tebbs left Virginia and went to Missouri, taking my Great Grandfather Daniel Fouchee Tebbs with them. They finally settled in the Platt River area on the Western end of Missouri. Daniel Fouche Tebbs married Susan Ellen Burnes and then left Missouri in 1865 and ended up in Utah. They settled an area in Southern Utah about ten miles north of Panguitch, Utah, where my mother was born.

I would be intersted in knowing what your ancestral line is. I have a lot of information about all of the descendents of Daniel Tebbs and can send you information on your line if you would like to have it.

Let me know if this is new information or if you already knew this history. I would love to exchange information with you about our Tebbs heritage. Some day we will make a connection to the Tebbs in England and then we can carry this line back a few more generations.

Vee Butterfield

Dear Vee, I'm a descendent of the Tebbs's of Virginia. I am not sure they were from England at least my branch. I belevie they were the French side of the family. They were Huguenots as my Daniel Tebbs married Charlotte Fouchee (Fouche in France) who's family came from France. The story I had was Daniel the elder and his l3 year old son came to Virginia. Later the younger Daniel married the daughter of the Mayor of a french village, all were Huguenot's, that emmigrated inmass. Over 300 people came, my Grandfather's sister Inez checked out the family so she could join a Huguenot Society. The Society of America, I looked it up on their Web site and learned a lot about the Huguenot's they keep good records. Inez traced back through the Edward Brown family who are related by marriage in the female line.
Most of the English Tebbs's seemed to go to New England. Hope this helps.
Kay Clinton

Hi, you're not necessarily in error with the missing "s". I was looking for my great great grandfather William Tebbs (as he's listed on the 1881 census) but on earlier census records he's listed as Tebb, and so was his father. Father was John Tebb and mother Susannah unknown, but I am not sure if they are related to the Donington lot as they seem to be separate. Lincolnshire records office would confirm if Susannah Tebb in your tree and John Tebb in mine were related. Regards, Michelle

In my "tree", I have a Susanna Tebb, born in 1773 in Donington-in-Holland (near Boston), Lincolnshire. I have her being the daughter of William Tebb, b1734 Donington-in-Holland. I am guessing that I am in error by not having the -s on the end of the name, but think it could be the same family. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

I am researching the Tebbs family from London who were hairdressers in the late 19th and early 20th century. There was a huge family of them (13 kids between 1882 and 1902) could any of these be your family. There was certainly a Charles born in 1885 and I think you mention a Charles in one of your other emails.

Meg Galley

Hello Barbara, I am not sure if we are related!! My branch of the Tebbs family originally came from Countesthorpe in Leicestershire., but one of my ancesters Samuel Tebbs (born 1850) married a Mary Jevon from West Bromwich and that is where he lived with his children up to 1901.The children were:
William Arthur Tebbs
Percy John Tebbs
George Stanley Tebbs
Alfred Howard Tebbs
Alice Tebbs
Catherine Tebbs

The thing is I can find no trace of any of this family in West Bromwich after 1901, so they could have moved to another town in the same county.

Do any of these names ring a bell with you? What was the name of your Grandfather?.

My email is bjlunamar89@hotmail.com if you would like to email direct
Bye for now Brenda

Tebbs family

I have just found this site. I have done extensive research into my branch of the Tebbs family. My ancestors came from Countesthorpe in Leicestershire. My Great Great Grandfather William, was a Gentleman Farmer and he had 10 children who survived. His son Richard , my Great Grandfather was a Chemist and moved to Gainsborough Lincolnshire with Elizabeth his wife and they had 7 children, one of they John Daniel Tebbs was my Grandfather. For some unknown reason Richard left his family and went to America and no one heard anything of him again.I found out that he remarried in New York a year later and I have a copy of his marriage certificate on which he declared that he was a widower!! The family he left behind then went to live in Leeds. My Grandfather John Daniel had 4 children, the eldest Roland Daniel was my father. If any one out there has any links with the Leicestershire or Lincolnshire Tebbs, I would be glad to share info with them.Other branches of the family tree spread to West Bromwich, Kent and Great Barr in Stafford.

I did a quick search on familysearch.org and found a John Tebbs with a father Thomas Tebbs in the 1881 British Census. There were also twelve references to a John Tebbs (Tibbs, Tybes, Teebs) with a father Thomas Tebbs in the International Genealogical Index - British Isles.

Impossible to tell of any of these are the ones you are looking for. None of them were John Henry Tebbs. You might check them and see if you can see anything that will be a clue as to if they are the ones you are seeking.

My mother was a Tebbs.

Vee Butterfield
this bible is quaint, it is covered in chamois and stitched with twine and would be more at home in a log cabin than in a drawing room.

the ink is dark brown and the writing large and loopy. there are many births and deaths but few marriages recorded.

there are loose notes in many hands and lots of 1840-1860 funeral notices from GEORGETOWN, SCOTT COUNTY, KENTUCKY tucked inside, I suppose i should transcribe these but none of them are related to me, so that is way down on my list

will email you soon

HI

I just did some checking and found that I am Argyle and Mary's fifth greatgranddaughter. I also found that Mary's parents were James and Mary Deskins Tebbs, she had a brother Moses. James's parents were Daniel and Charlotte Foushee . I have a little more on the Foushee and Tebbs.

My connection is thru Argyle and Mary's daughter Artemisia, who married Stephen Furr, their daughter married Thomas Elam (I have much more)

My father, Leonard Overcash, did research on this family many years ago and there are papers that might lead to more info.

Please contact me, maybe we can add more to our files
wfreelance5@aol.com

I'm part of a Tebbs group who are researching the name in England. Our Tebbs are largely originally London based (as far back as we know) but spread all over. Our oldest was John Tebbs in the mid 1700s in Southwark / Central London. We have a lot of loose ends which could provide connections. I am aware of other concentrations in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire. It would be good to make contact with other Tebbs researchers and exchange info.
We are in contact with the American Tebbs family organisation and are trying to find the missing link to their Daniel Tebbs as well as trying to broaden our own UK links.
