If you are looking for the genealogy of Samuel Hood Templeton, you might want to check the book by L. B. Templeton titled "Templeton Family History." This book discusses the Laurens County, SC, Templetons. Pages 132-134 have quite a bit of info on Samuel.

Ron Templeton

TEMPLETON of Toronto, Canada

Hello,

I'm trying to find lost cousins for a female friend of my son. She would love to know why she's a redhead and has heard it comes from this lost side.

I don't know a lot, but maybe someone has some further hints for me! Her grandmother was G. MACK (still living, so won't use first name) born 1947, Toronto to John Edward MACK and Marcia Elizabeth TEMPLETON. I understand that John Edward MACK's mother was Dutch, possibly Jewish, with the unusual surname of VON KOVENHOVEN. Somewhere in there is the name CARPENTER too, but supposedly it was French and originally CHARPENTIER/CARPENTIER at one time.

Not much to go on, but I told her I'd try. I've got hits with less before! Thank you.

Mary

You may be descended from the Templetons of Laurens County, SC, where there are two lines. One is from a David Templeton and one is from a Robert Templeton. If you can find a copy of the Summer 2007 issue The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research (SCMAR)you will find an article I wrote titled Possible NC/SC Templeton Relationships. I am descended from James Templeton Senior of Iredell County, NC. However, my recent DNA results show a match with descendants of the Laurens County Templeton indicating a common ancestor about eight generations back.

Ron Templeton

Polly,

Here is the latest. We are back to the Ephraim buried next to Esther. The online site which list those buried at Centre, with dates, had an error for this Ephraim. It stated he died in 1884 age 77 years. He should have been in the census records for 1850 to 1880 since those records list all the members of a household, not just the household head. I could not find him in any of those census records and checked another WEB site which has pictures of the headstones. Ephraim's headstone actually states he died in 1844 at the age of 37 years. Therefore, this Ephraim fits the picture as being the possible husband of Esther. I am updating my data base this weekend. If you forward, by email, your mailing address I will forward you a copy of the genealogy and further explanation. My email address is templetonr@aol.com.

Ron

Just to let you know, I have been researching the Templetons of Iredell County, NC, and some from SC for some time - trying to tie up loose ends in my line and seeing if there any connections. From my reseach, I believe there is a Templeton who settled in York County, SC, who may be related to my line in NC. By the way, I saw your query on GENFORUM and you stated in it you did not know the maiden name of Ellen S. Templeton. I believe I had stated earlier her maiden name was Templeton. If you go to https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F3CW-Z5S
you will see the info from her death certificate which list her parents. You can also view the death certificate.

Ron

Polly,

Here is the latest I have. In my last response I mentioned checking the plots at Centre Presbyterian. I have since found the plot layout on line. All of the following have the Templeton surname unless otherwise indicated:
AA1-Esther (1810-1881)
AA2- Ephraim (1807-1884)
AA3-Joseph N. Donaldson (1818-1840)
AA4-Joseph(1748-1826)
AA5-Joseph (1784-1856)
AA6-Ruth Cowan (1840-1914) She was the daughter of Ephraim.

The Joseph Donaldson was a son Lydia Templeton, daughter of Joseph Senior. But I want to check this one further as the date of death is suspicious.

It would appear that Esther has some relationship with Joseph Senior's line but it would have to via a grandson, not a son. Joseph Junior never married. Ephraim married Ruth Creswell, who is buried at Centre but in a different section where the Creswells are buried. I found that Joseph Senior's son David married a Margaret Fisher on 11 October 1811.

If Esther married a grandson of Joseph Senior it would not have been from Ephraim's line since his son(s) were born after 1830.

David Templeton is in the 1830 census for Iredell County with a son listed as being 15-19. I have not found a name for that son as yet. David and his wife left NC and moved to TN, possibly just prior to the 1840 census. He is not in the 1840 census at all, but does appear in the 1850 census in TN.

Ron

Thanks for the reply, but forget about researching Ephriam! I will give you someone else to look for, but here is some additional data. Esther Templeton is buried at Centre Presbyterian Church in Mt. Mourne, NC, Iredell County. Per her tombstone the dates are: born 22 Nov 1810, died 31 Jan 1881. Her youngest son, Julius R., is buried in Denton, TX, and his tombstone dates are: born 5 Oct 1839, died 27 Feb 1917. His wife died in 1913 and she was Martha (Mattie, Matilda) Deaton. Unfortunately, Julius' death certificate does not include the names of his parents. Based on the 1840 NC census, Esther's husband had to have died between January 1839 and 1 June 1840, the latter being the date when the 1840 census was enumerated. Based on this, my suggestion would be to research a David Templeton, a son of Joseph Templeton Senior of Iredell County. This Joseph was a son of James Templeton Senior, my direct ancestor, who was in NC as early as 1749. Joseph Senior had eight children and we have info on all but David. All eight children are listed in a deed action of 3 October 1828 regarding Joseph Senior's land (he died in 1826). In this action, the land was deeded to Joseph Junior. In the NC 1830 census, Joseph Junior is listed as a household head with another male of age to have been David. Two females are listed in the house and would have been two of Joseph's sisters. Joseph Junior never married. Since David never appears in any other records, including census records, it is possible he married Esther around 1832 and died before the 1840 census was taken.

If you live in NC, you might want to visit the Centre Presbyterian graveyard and see if you can determine who is buried next to Esther. I have visited it and some of the tombstones are not readable.

You stated James' wife was "Esther" Templeton. I think you meant "Ellen" S. Templeton. Ellen was the sister of my great-grandfather Robert Sinclair Templeton. Ellen and James would have been, as it seems, second cousins - maybe third cousins.

Hope this helps,

Ron

Scots Ancestry Link

A recenly completed phase I of a genetic genealogy study of NW NC & SW VA Templetons included undocumented links to Scots ancestors in the Ayreshire/Argylshire area. I'm now seeking to document a link.with the following 3 Scots Templeton generarions:
- Robt I (b. abt 1650, possibly Argylshire) & Margaret Reid
- Robt II (b.1673 Campeltown, Argyl, Scotland) & Margaret Cudbertson
m. 4/22/1687 Campeltown, Argyl
- Robt III b.1704 Campletown, Argyl) & Agnes Wilson.
Based on numerous undocumented family trees, I initially thought the link was via Robt III & Agnes’ son, James Templeton (b.1739) & Mary McKie who were married in Wigtonshire, Scotland. However, Pittsylvania Co. tithe & land records confirm that 3 of the sons attributed to James & Agnes are actually sons of a Robert Templeton b. abt 1720/5. This Robt (Robt IV) is possibly if not probably the Robt (b. 3/28/1725 in Kilmaurs, Ayreshire) and the same Robert who appears in the undocumented trees as a son of Robt III.
Would appreciate comments including any documentation on the above Scots Templeton cluster
Here is addtional info. The 1880 census has James born in NC, as well as both parents. He has a John and Lucy McConnel living in his household. In that same census, his mother is living a household by herself and is listed as E. M. Templeton. It might be possible the "M" stands for McConnel. She and her parents are listed as having been born in NC. James also served in the Civil War in Company K, 56th NC Infantry. He was wounded on 8/21/1864 at Globe Tavern, Virginia, and on 1/24/1865 transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps.

Ron

It appears all three of the ladies were the daughters of David Templeton and Jane Barrickman. David Templeton was the son of Robert Templeton(1762-1845) and Mary Hannah. Robert initially settled in Laurens County, SC, after coming to the colonies with his father and the rest of the family around 1772 from Ireland. Robert and his brother John moved to Indiana around 1804. Robert left a will, dated 7 October 1829, which was witnessed by his sons Robert Junior and David. The fact that Robert's wife was named Mary Hannah is from a deed action in SC where some land she sold was part a dowry from her father William Hannah, Sr.

Hello Doug,

I hope you don't mind me interjecting here on another Tennesse family you were tracking. I noticed on the tree you have posted, you show William Boren (b. 1752),
with daughter Susannah Boren (b. 1803).

Susannah is my GGGG Grandmother.

Her husband was John Standlee (b. 1800 KY), you show Joseph Standlee. Please let me know if you're interested in more information, of if you'd be willing to share what you have on the family.

Thanks,

Karen Allman
klallman@cox.net

Since the publication, new data has sufaced on the Templetons of Laurens County.
1933 Templeton Family Tree, David Templeton

I'm not connected to this family, but I stumpled upon this and want to get it to those who can appreciate it. It is a Templeton Family Tree with a 1933 copyright date, compiled by "L.B. Templeton". The main tree is a David Templeton, says Revolutionary War Soldier, born about 1750, died 1817. See the photos for more info. It's too large to scan so I took photos of it in sections. You can see the photos at these links. If you download the pictures you can view them at full size. Feel free to add this to your ancestry trees and share it. Hope this helps someone! You may have to copy paste these urls because the message board won't let me use HTML...

FIRST PICTURE: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0KB-j_O0a2nYjgwNDk5NjUtYjA... |SECOND PICTURE:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0KB-j_O0a2nZmEyMWNiOTgtMTZ... |THIRD PICTURE:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0KB-j_O0a2nOTI2MzUzYjgtNGI... |FOURTH PICTURE:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0KB-j_O0a2nNzE5YmI1YTEtMzM... |FIFTH PICTURE:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0KB-j_O0a2nMzc5MWZlZDctZTc...

I was so young, I do not remeber much before Bev dying and after that they did not talk about anything or anyone much at all. Since we were in Florida, we missed out on all our cousins on the Templeton side and the Nonn's in Wisconsin.
I can tell you that I have been married 3 times and I have one son by my first marriage that is supposed to be a direct decendant of Robert E. Lee. My first son is William Russell Lee IV and his great grandfather was the tax collector for Meter Georgia and his name is on a plaque in the town hall of Meter Georgia.
I also have 2 daughters and one son by my second marriage and they are Loretta Elizabeth Rose workman and Rebeckah Ann Workman and then my youngest is Willaim Scott Workman with their father is Donald Scott Workman out of Ohio. Did not know if you wanted to add this info to your family tree. I have one grandchild and she is 3 1/2 Ava Rose Snow but her real father is Maxwell Hobolth.
I would really like to send you some pictures of us all and yes I would love to know more. I would also like to get some of he pictures as well and maybe we could come visit some time. I will try to see if I can download some pictures for the family tree. Out of our family only me and Robert are left and at best we are on shakey ground with our health. We bith have the heart issues going on. I will keep in touch. Thanks

Hi blossom,

I am Doug Malone of McMinnville. I remember ypur mother and father well. Such good people. I loved H D to death. I remember Beverly. I thought she was the prettiest girl I ever saw. Your parents used to visit my family when they came to McMinnville on vacations. I remember he pitched me way up in the air one day and scared me to death. Sadly, he caught me. Letha, Calhoun, and H D were raised by Aunt Carrie Templeton.
I never thought she was mean, just grumpy. She willed me a typeist table and an old trunk she said used to belong to her father, John D Templeton who fought in the Civil War. I still have them. Calhoun and Merva used to visit too. Merva came back once after Calhoun died. She had a bunch of kids.
H D married a girl named Hazel O'neal. H D burned to death when his home burned. I knew Laura, Alton, and their mother Lena. I remember Uncle Levander, brother of Carrie. Carrie was a sister of my grandmother Annie Templeton.

I can tell you more if you wish.

Doug Malone

Thanks for reminding me of those good old times!!

Hi, I was looking some family history since my mother did not talk much about her mother and father. It has led me to you. I guess we are cousins. My mother was Letha Templeton. She married Clifford Nonn out of Wisconsin and they moved to Florida. I guess that would make John and Sarah Templeton my great grandparents. I had very little info about them and was up late and decided to do some searching. It is awesome to see the pictures that you have posted. The only thing my mother told me about was an Aunt Parr that raised her and Uncle Dee(h.d.) and Uncle Cal and she was very mean to them. She would only tell me that her parents died when she was very young. Any info that you can pass on about her parents of Will and Pina would be great if you have it. My name is Dar;ene Schwab and I live in Tampa Florida. Thanks

I am descended from the James Templeton Senior of Iredell County, who arrived there in 1748. Elizabeth's marriage bond, 27 Feb 1772, was signed by her brother Nathaniel. Consent from her father is dated 26 Feb 1772. There is no record of James having a brother named John, but it is believed he had a son of that name. The name of James' wife (Elizabeth's mother) is not known.

James also had a son, Nathanial. I understand there were probably three different Templeton families in the area. I believe James had a brother (John). Any information would be helpful as I am stuck on my MtDNA at Elizabeth. I would love to know who her mother was. Thank you.

Ron, I owe you an apology-especially after you taught me back in 2004 the necessity of documentation, documentation, etc, etc.
While researching ties between the Rocky Creek Templetons & the Pittsylvania Co Templetons I found where Robt Templeton maried Anny Wells 12/9/1788. His bondsman was my 2g grandfather Thomas Templeton. If yhis Robt was indeed the same Robt who disappeared from Pittsylvania Tax lists adter 1787, then he was born < 1766. he shows up in the Rocky Creek area in 1790 along with John & Thomas. Disappeared after 1820 census supposedly migrating to Floyd Co, KY & then Ohio. Can't find any trace of him.
Again sorry for the goof. I deleted him from descendants of James, Sr.
Jack

Jack,

Your entry states that the Robert Templeton who married Anny Wells was a daughter of Geroge Templeton and Eleanor Gracey. George Templeton left a will dated 18 Feb 1824, in which he names his wife, children and a grandson. There is no Robert listed as a son. Can you provide the source data which indicates this Robert is a son of George and Eleanor?

This would be appreciated as I am a descendant of George and Eleanor.

Ron Templeton

Harry,
Dora Isabell Templeton was my great great grandmother who married Jesse Henry Washington Foss.
Elizabeth Jane Papst was born to John Joseph Papst and Sarah Ross French. I have been trying to find out more about Sarah's parents and grandparents. Do you have anything to share on our 'French' ancestors?
I also found a picture of Elizabeth Jane Papst online but that is the only photo i have of Dora's family. Do you have any photos to share of Frederick or Jane with their family?
thanks
Cheryl
Amos Templeton is my great grand fathers brother. I have some information on all the Templeton's except Amos. I do have a copy of really interesting book WASHING ON THE LINE by Beauton Templeton Rielly (sic).

I am not able to do a lot of research right now. I have had surgery and am "misplaced" (living with my mother and most of my papers are at my house)

I love family information even when it is not the direct line.
I am looking for Templetons from Northern Ireland. I am interested however in the children of your grandmother. Is there any chance that you have a relative by the name of Trevor Templeton. He would be my Grandfather's cousin. My grandfather was born in Canada in 1920. A first generation canadian. His name is Robert Brian Templeton, now residing in Ontario.
