I'm sure you have already seen John Haywood SMITH b 1813 w parents Sarah HARRELSON + Dutton SMITH? This is a possible candidate.
Have you registered at FTDNA? I did the "Family Finder" Test and have matched w some people who have the SMITH surname...this cd be the reason....
But...one of our TERRELL/TERRIL ancestors is Mary SMITH, back in CT/NY Long Island. Smith family was connected to TERRELL on Long Island through land deals also.
Let me know if you looked at that SMITH (he was a possibly a Loyalist, but did have a child John Haywood SMITH b 1813 d 1887. The family tree where I found this is "Jess Anthony Family Tree" and someone named "Anthony" also shows as a match to me at FTDNA.
Incidentally, through DNA tests, we did confirm to share DNA w the Roger TERRELL of CT line. Yeah!
Also, I sent you an invitation to my family tree. One thing to look at is children's names to see if there are any family similarities; another is to see if any siblings married siblings in the same family.

I am the great granddaughter of Haywood Smith (1813-1875) and Sarah Ann Terrell(b 15 Mar 1816 Clinton Co Ohio, m 1 August 1833 Clinton County; d 26 Aug 1870 Cass County, Indiana). Sarah was the daughter of Newcomb Terrell and Jane Johnson. What I am trying to figure out is the parents of Haywood. My Terrell line eventually goes back to Adam also, I think.

There is also an Aaron TERRILL b 1726 Milford, New Haven CT, d 1769 Indian, Penobscot ME. His father was Capt. Josiah TERRELL b 18 Aug 1695 Milford, New Haven CT, d 27 Sep 1767 Waterbury, New Haven CT + Mary GOODWIN b 14 Jan 1700 New Haven, New Haven CT, d 5 Apr 1768 Naugatuck, New Haven CT. Parents of that Josiah TERRIL/TERRELL were John TERRIL/TERRELL b Aug 1644 Milford, New Haven CT, d 27 Feb 1723 Milford New Haven CT + Sarah WILLEY b 19 Jun 1644 Milford, New Haven CT, d 1711 Milford, New Haven CT. (He also had wife Abigail LOVELAND)
Aaron TERRILL b 1726 also had brother Moses b 1724, "d April 1st, 1783, in his 59th yr." who m Susannah BARNES b 18 Aug 1724 Waterbury, New Haven CT "with small pox, in her 70th yr." (from records of Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck)
Parents of John were Roger TERRIL/TERRELL + Abigail UFFORD.
etc.
Interestingly, William NEWCOMB TERRELL (known as "Newcomb"), b 7 Nov 1778 Bridgeton, Cumberland NJ, d abt 1843 Clarke, Clinton OH married first Catherine PENNINGTON, b abt 1800; they were m 24 Aug 1811 Adams Co OH.
He was also m to Jane JOHNSON 26 May 1824 in Highland Co OH (formerly WVA). Jane + Newcumb had 9 children. I do not have much info about Catherine, but she is listed with him in a land sale and a court bond for John Hill in 1813. This was another branch of the descendants of Roger TERRELL + Abigail UFFORD. William was son of Adam TERRIL b 1742 Long Island NY, d Cumberland NJ, descendant of Roger + Abigail's son Samuel TERRILL (1649 Milford CT - 1720 Brookhaven, Suffolk NY) and likely the child of Samuel's son Adam TERRIL/TERRELL b abt 1695 Moriches, Suffolk NY, d 1759 Deerfield, Cumberland NJ. Land records in Cumberland support that Adam who d 1759 appears on purchase of land for a Presbyterian parsonage, "along w Jonas DAYTON, Samuel LEEK, Nehemiah VEAL, & Abraham ROSE, all formerly of Suffolk NY."
NOTE THAT ADAM TERRIL B 1742 WAS MISTAKENLY BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN BORN IN RHODE ISLAND FOR SOME TIME, BUT IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DETERMINED THAT HE CAME FROM LONG ISLAND, NOT RHODE ISLAND.
I notice that you show Sarah Emily PENNINGTON m to Aaron P. TERREL (1823-1870). She may be a sister or other relative of Catherine PENNINGTON.
Also, Elizabeth Ann TERREL married John Wesley HARRIS b 25 Sep 1854 Cedar City, Cedar MO, d 16 May 1920 Fort Smith, Sebastion AR.
Mary "Polly" TERRIL/TERRELL (another dau of Adam TERRIL + Mary THOMPSON, the dau of Anna NEWCOMB, married Ephraim MCGEE. I think that the MCGAHY you show as mother of Sarah PENNINGTON + Nancy MCGEHEE is from the family of Ephraim MCGEE of Cumberland NJ.
I need to look at it some more, but Catherine PENNINGTON may be sister of the Simon PENNINGTON you name and both children of Jacob PENNINGTON of Centre PA and Lydia WAY. Their children included: Elizabeth, Simon, Robert, Joshua, William, Henry, Isaac, Catherine, Lydia, Mary Ann, Margaret, and Hannah PENNINGTON.
There is also a Jeptha TERRELL b 29 Oct 1733, Polecat Swamp, Caroline VA d 30 Oct 1810 Granville NC who is son of John TERRELL + Elizabeth Oxford HARRIS....THIS IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TERRELL FAMILY, DESC FROM WILLIAM SON OF RICHMOND TERRELL OF VIRGINIA. Many have been confused because both Roger and Richmond had descendants in the same area of WVA/OH at the same time.
Please contact me with questions
bbyboom@hotmail.com

Linda,
Did I notify you about the info I learned about our Adam TERRIL? He came fr LONG Island, not Rhode Island...his grandson Adam THOMPSON TERRELL made a mistake when he wrote it in his diary in 1838. He had never met his g'father and he was young. I have lots more to share and you can contact me @ bbyboom@hotmail.com
There were a big group who went fr Long Island to Salem NJ before the Revolution, and you will recognize some of the names.
This has been quite a trip figuring this out! but it is all falling in place.

Hi I was looking at the post and noticed yours because my Great Grandmothers sister was named Ruth Hodges who married a James Hartwell Terrell and who had a son named John Hartwell Terrell and also in a family Bible there is a "spelled" Jonny Ruth being born May 15, 1948 in CA and if I am not mistaken in going through some of my Grandmothers things that there is a few post cards from a Johnnie Ruth. I am wondering if I am on the right track and your family.

Hi,
I can't really help you with the Terrell's you mentioned but I am researching my 3rd great grandfather, born in 1856, John M (supposedly Madison) Terrell. He was born in Virginia, but I have not found his birth certificate. He married Lula Morgan Terrell, who was also born in Virginia - possibly Mecklenburg County. They migrated to Alamance County, North Carolina working in textile mills. If you have any information pertaining to their possible parents thanks for passing it on. My ancestry tree is Diffee Hall of NC.

I just saw that you are researching black Terrells. My Terrell is white so I guess this won't help too much :)

Unfortunately, any information that you have connecting Fountain Terrill to William the Conqueror is faulty. A great deal more research was done on this line by the Tyrrell Family History Society in England (of which I am a member) in the 1990s, since Fountain Terrill has a huge number of "cousins" who still live in the U.K. I was assigned to London for 5 years and enjoyed participating.

If you will furnish an email address, I will send you a printout of what I've got on his ancestry, fully sourced.

Don C.

I cannot find my ggggrandfather, William Hudson Terrell, born in 1819 in Virginia. Died in Louisiana 1861. His wife (most probably 2nd wife), emigrated to Brasil in 1868 from Gonzales Texas with at lease one of her relative, Moncrief. He is almost certainly related to the Virginia & south Carolina founders. The most telling similarity being appearance.
The strangest problem is I cannot find any reliable records. This might be due to the civil war and the destruction of numerous southern civil & church buildings, including in Alexandria.
I could use any thread of information, thank you!

The Dekalb Co., GA Terrells and Fords-The Rest of the Story!!

William Terrell, Sr. (aka "Uncle Billy Terrell") married Mary "Polly" Baker. They had one child only. Her name was Mary "Polly" Terrell.
Mary "Polly" Terrell married Isaac Ford. They had four children: William Ford, Saleta Ford, Mary Ford, and Coleman Ford. Mary "Polly" Terrell Ford died when Coleman was just 4 months old. Coleman was the youngest child. William and Mary "Polly" Baker Terrell finished raising their 4 grandchildren.
When Mary Ford was grown, she married(or had a child out of wedlock with), Jack Lee/Clee. It is uncertain if they were married. Mr. Lee/Clee left and Mary died just one hour after giving birth to her only child, later named William Terrell (aka William Terrell Ford) by his great-grandparents. His great-grandparents, William Terrell and Polly Baker Terrell raised him in their home from the time he was one hour old. His great-grandfather, William Terrell, called him William Terrell because he didn't want him to bear the name of Clee or Lee, as he didn't like the man, Ford being the last name of his mother, when "little Billy" aka William Terrell Ford was born.
If you are interested in all the documentation for this information, I would be happy to forward to you the 60 page court transcript from the Georgia Supreme Court in 1899 as soon as I am finished typing it up from the copy of the original :-) There is a lot more information included in it. My sister, Ami Hart, and I found the original case file from the law suit of the heirs of William Terrell against W.C. Gill and Lucy Johnson in an old box that was uncatalogued in the Georgia State Archives just two weeks ago! :-)
