Helen Terras Born Abt 1841 St Vigeans or Inverkeilor, Scotland

Helen Terras Born Abt 1841 St Vigeans or Inverkeilor, Scotland.
Mother of Robert Middleton, Alexander Dunbar, Stewart Bell, Wilhelminia or Jemima Skerit.

Having viewed transcriptions of the 1841, 1851, 1861 Scotland Census I have found that Helen Terras was born Helen Splading, orphaned and taken to live with her Uncle Robert Terras (who at the moment is commonly believed to be her biological father).

This information has been verified by a cousin, George McQueen. George has viewed the original census in Edinburgh on 29 August 2008 and has confirmed my findings.

The 1851 census shows that Helen (born abt 1838) is the orphaned pauper niece of Robert Terras, not his daughter. I believe that Helen Terras is the daughter of one of Margaret Terras' (nee Spalding) brothers.
The 1851 census also shows that Helen Wallace (born about 1774 Stracathro, Forfarshire) is the mother-in-law of Robert Terras ie Margaret Spalding’s mother.
In the 1861 census Helen Wallace is shown as Helen Spalding and Helen Spalding is listed as Helen Terras with her son Robert S. Terras (who is later Robert Middleton).

1841 Helen Spalding, Betty Terres, Margaret Terres, Robert Terres, Helen Wallace

1851 Helen Spalding, Betty Terres, Robert Terres, Robert Terres, Helen Wallace

1861 Helen Spalding, Helen Terres, Robert S Terres

1871 Helen Terres, Robert Middleton, Alexander Dunbar, Stewart Bell, Jemima Skerit

1881 Helen Terras, Robert Middleton, Alexander Dunbar, Stewart Bell, Minia Shirit

1891 Helen Terras, Robert Middleton, Alexander Dunbar, Stewart Bell

1901 Robert Middleton, Helen Terras (Transcribed as Tovice)

Sources:
Census 1841 Scotland, Parish of Inverkeilor, County Angus, page 6
Census 1851 Scotland, Parish of Brechin, County Angus
Census 1861 Scotland, Parish of Dun, County Angus
Census 1871 Scotland, Parish of Montrose Countyy Angus
Census 1881 Scotland, Parish of Montrose Countyy Angus
Census 1891 Scotland, Parish of Montrose Countyy Angus
Census 1901 Scotland, Parish of Montrose Countyy Angus

Feel free to provide feedback.
Jennifer Stepanovic

Here are another 2 generations back for you plus others down the tree. My husband's great uncle George Malcolm Terrace emigrated to USA in about 1920 and I'm trying to find more information on that branch.
Eventually when time permits I would like to do an unofficial One-Name Study of the Terrace family which is obviously world-wide.
Hope you can open the attached gedcom file OK and that the information is useful to you.
All for now.
Barbara

TERRES, Charles, Haiti prior to 1811

Charles TERRES, I am told, was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France. He married Kate (?) and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. prior to 1811. One of his grandsons, John Brown TERRES, was U.S. Consul to Haiti 1880-1920. I am trying to determine if Charles came to the United States by way of Haiti. Is anyone researching this surname and can shed light on this matter?

I have Terres ancestors-but believe they originally came from France-Had not heard it is possible they were Scotch. Charles Terres was the immigrant, and a son Charles Edward of Philadelphia worked as an engraver for the US Mint there-early 1800's-then moved to Charlotte NC. Have you run across this Terres.?

Thank you for your response to my message. I went back into my files and find I need the marriage of my George Stevenson to Margaret Terres to discover her father. As the birth and marriage of Margaret seem to have taken place in Wemyess, Fife, I'm not sure there will be a connection, but I think it is worth looking. My Margaret's marriage to George Stevenson took place in 1846 in Wemyess.
