The first Tew I have is Richard who came from England in 1600's. The Tew family settled in RI and most early ones are mariners. Later some went south. There may be other Tew's who are not related. I would work your line backwards instead of trying to start at the beginning you may find no relationship to the early Tew's.

Post your line as far as you have it and I'll see if I can find a connection.

Hello, Barrie. I am a ninth generation Tew from England, most of whom, until my generation, resided in North Carolina. I trace back to Robert Tew, 1720-1787. He is thought to be the son of John Tew, 1690-1760. I would very much like to learn more about the Tews in England and whether John Tew is mentioned in any of your materials. I am new to genealogy and am not sure how to proceed. Can you offer any help or advice?

Thank you Roberta you definately found more info than i was able to get onmy own. I was able to get some info on my great, great grandfather's and granmother's but had hit a wall. So does this mean that your husband and i are related? That would be great if so does that make us distant cousins?

When it comes upt to the point of Anne Madden my great great grandmother and her husband James tew my great , great grandfather all seems to be lost especially on Anne finding her parents i think her mother is from Ireland.
My great, great, great granfather robert stevens on his daughters birth certificate it says he is from the friendly islands which is in Tonga but i did come across a diffrent record with both him and my grandmother on it it says that his father is from england and the mom is from the sandwich islands which is hawaii which makes more sense since stevens is a english name but i do have another record from his voyage from the figi islad s at the age of 14 coming ino fairhaven mass. So i am quite confused on which on to come with or perhaps it is father and son.

Thank you again I hope i can help you at some point as well.

Re: Tew Family

Michelle:
It looks like you are descended from the Tews of Rhode Island. The first Tew to come to Rhode Island was Richard Tew who came on the same ship with Roger Williams in 1630. Richard is listed on the Rhode Island Charter given to Roger Williams by Charles II of England in 1663. Richard came from Maidford, Northamptonshire, England, born circa 1615. He married Mary Clarke 18 Oct 1633 in Prior Hardwick, Warwickshire, England. He died in after 19 Jan 1673 in London where he had gone to settle some property matters. He left twenty shillings to his brother John Tew of Towcester, Northampton, England. The rest of his property, in Rhode Island and England he left to his son "Henry of Newport in Rhode Island." Richard's father was Henry. His children were Seaborn, born 4 Jun 1640 on board ship; Elnathan, born 15 Oct 1644 in Providence, Rhode Island (my husband's ancestor); Mary, born 12 Aug 1647 in Middletown, Rhode Island; Thomas born about 1649 in Middletown, Rhode Island and Henry born abt 1654 in Providence, Rhode Island.

Charles Tew married Hattie Stevens on Nov 24 1902 in New Bedford. His father and mother were James Tew born Newport Rhode Island and Annie Madden born Boston, Mass. James and Annie were not married in Massachusetts as far as I can see. Hattie's mother and father were Robert Stevens and Harriet L. Turner.

Hope this is helpful info. There is info about the Tew family on various websites.

The New England Historic and Genealogical Society has the vital records of Massachusetts listed through 1915. Unfortunately, vital records of Rhode Island are not online.

Roberta

Hello Lindsey,
My name is Michelle Paulo (Francis). It is nice to meet you. I live in Wareham, Massachusetts originally from New bedford Mass. My grandmothers last name was Tew her first name was Harriet.

There are a great deal of Tews in Newport Rhode Island whom originated from England it was a very popular name at one time and to my knowlegde very wealthy. If you have ever been there you would see why.

The research i have done so far is that my great, great grandfather Charles D. Tew was born in Rhode Island as well as his Father James A. Tew

I am not sure why they came here or what they did i have come across a couple of records but not really sure if they are accurate.

I have not heard of this pirate you were speaking of i can't imagine he was very nice, but always remember that even some of our ancestors may have not been the nicest people in the world, but they also grew up in a different time than we did and we can be grateful for that.

It's funny to hear someone say that hated their last name i too always hated my maiden name and was so happy to get rid of it. I can't say that i am glad to have it yet,but maybe down the road i will.

I hope you are enjoying your research and discoveries i know i am. Perhaps we are related that would be wonderful.
May i ask why did you begin your search? Just interest or wanting to know more about who you are?

My reason wanting to learn more about where i come from my mother was adopted and doesn't really know anything about her family therefore, neither do i so i would like to have this material and a sense of belonging in this world.

We will have to keep in touch even if we are not related let me know how your search is going.
Take care
Michelle Paulo (Francis)

Hello Michelle

My name is Lindsey Adams, my name before I married was Tew and I live in Liverpool UK. My grandfather(who died 10.5.50 well before I was born, by the way) was called Frank Tew and he was one of 17 siblings.

I know some of his brothers/sisters emigrated to the US after WW1, but they went South to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

This is the 1st time I've ever heard of Tew's being further north.

Have you researched Thomas Tew the pirate, because I bet we are related and I bet Thomas is the link.

Sadly, history tells us he wasn't a very nice man, but he is a direct ancestor of mine (and maybe yours) and I have to live with that.

I don't know what else to say, except Tew is a good name to look up because there aren't many of us !!

I hated the name when I was at school because it was so unusual/different, but now I'm so glad I'm not a Smith or Jones

Kind Regards and please respond
Lindsey Adams (Tew)

The town marriage records are lines of data listed in a book. Both the names of the participants and their parents are listed as well as the Preacher and location of marriage and birth location of the parties. In the early days no formal Certificates issued by the government. Churches may have provided documentation or the parties drew up their own certificates of marriage. Just speculation on my part.

Research tip. Go to census data first and work back. After that you know where they were and names of family members. Then go to detail data. In your case they seem to have stayed in New Bedford for quite a while and MA also so relatively easy to search. A subscription to NEHGS may help since that is where I got the detailed data. New England Historical Genealogical Society, Newbury St. Boston. research membership $75. Census data from ancestry.com a pay site. 1880 census usually available for FREE at Ancestry as well as FamilySearch.org.

1870 United States Federal Census
about Manuel Francis
Name: Manuel Francis
Birth Year: abt 1833
Age in 1870: 37
Birthplace: Western Islands
Home in 1870: New Bedford Ward 6, Bristol, Massachusetts
Race: White
Gender: Male
Value of real estate: View image
Post Office: New Bedford
Household Members:
Name Age
Manuel Francis 37
Francis Francis 12
Manuel Francis 3
Domingo Francis 1

Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: New Bedford Ward 6, Bristol, Massachusetts; Roll M593_605; Page: 262B; Image: 529; Family History Library Film: 552104.

I can't thank you enough for helping me. Yesterday i found record of my grandmother for her father and mother. My grandmother was born May 18,1876 her father as you have also found is Robert S. Stevens from the friendly islands which i am finding out is Tonga in the south pacific. But my great, great grandmother's name is listed as Louisa Turner from Conneticut.Perhaps that was a middle name it makes more sense that it would be Harriet. We also went to Newport I found three records for James Tew the first
James Tew-Date of Death 11/19/1887
Place of death Asylum-Broadway Newport
Colored At the age of 66. The weird thing is only his father was listed by the name of John Tew but his mother was erased. Perhaps she was white and the family was against him. The second James Tew was born Sept 2, 1715 in Newport Father's name is Henry Tew mother is Ann Richmond but, this was not filed until 1719/20
Third was a marriage James A. Tew to Maria Newbury Dec 18, 1864 He was 48 and she was 35. That is the exact name on my Great, great grandfathers birth record. His parents are Langthy Tew & Eliza Peckham He is said to be colored. Their marriage was at Minister of the Gospel.
Maria Newbury said to be colored/indian from Quebec James Newbury&Mary Williams and the first marriage for both. I have to say i am starting to confuse myself Tomorrow we are going to Boston to research My Great, great grandmother Anna Madden and Hopefully find out where my Grandfather is from John Andrews Francis all i have is that is fathers name is Domingo Francis and mother is Ella A. Andrews he was born June 29, 1913. Thank you for that website i will check that tonight. How come maiden names are used if couples are married? Thank you again any help is greatly appreciated and the help you have given is appreciated.
Sincerely
Michelle

Dorothy Tew/Alvin White

I am the great granddaughter of Dorothy Tew. She married a man named Alvin White on or about May 17, 1930. She was 12 or 13 years old at the time of her marrying Mr. White. I know that she had 2 daughters with him named Lavon and Geneva. However, Alvin passed away in the early-mid 1930's. In 1935 she had a son that was given up for adoption. We are trying to determine when Alvin White passed away.
The son she gave up for adoption was born November 17, 1935 and was my grandfather. His name was Spurgeon Steen. We are trying to determine his biological father and wondering if Alvin White was his biological father. Without knowing Alvin's death date we have now way of knowing.
They lived in Mississippi. Spurgeon was adopted by Samuel and Carrie Steen as a baby in Georgetown, MS.
If you have ANY information about Dorothy and Alvin, please, whoever you are, email me !

Thanks,

Kristie Merchant

kristiemerchant@gmail.com

Trying to figure out what it is exactly you seek. assume the easier route. Charles D. Tew was born in New Bedford MA April 22, 1876. His Parents were James Tew born Newport, RI and Anna Madden born Boston,MA. Interestingly he is listed as mixed race. This is an unusual notation. Others on the page are listed as african or white etc. Can follow James back from there. It is true many Tew's in RI and Ma and many more James'. Suggest you try the 1880 census FREE at FamilySearch.org for starters.

Hi, James. I am looking for information on James Quitman Tew. He married Ella Arrons Tew and they had at least 3 children, Durwood, Rayford, and Dorothy. Dorothy, we have found out, is my aunt's biological grandmother. She had a son, Spurgeon Steen, who was adopted by Samuel & Carrie Steen. Any information you can share would be great! May God bless you for your efforts.
Sincerely,
Regina

Carol,

I, along with my aunt, have been diligently searching for the Tew family. My great grand mother was Dorothy Christine Tew, daughter of James Quitman Tew and Ella Mae Aarons. My grandfather was her son that she gave up for adoption in 1935. Can you please email me so that we can talk about any information you may have? My email address is kristiemerchant@gmail.com
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kristie L Merchant

My connection to The Tews:

My mother was Darlene Michele Steen Merchant and my aunt is Donna Steen Blackston.
Their father (my grandfather) was Spurgeon O Steen who was adopted Samuel and Carrie Steen in 1935 when Dorothy C Tew gave him up for and unknown (to me) reason.
Dorothy C Tew had a brother named William Durward Tew and Rayford Tew. Durward was born about 1914 and Dorothy was born about 1917. I don't have any information on Rayford. I have found out that Durward moved to Georgia. b. august 1 1914 and d. Sept 1986. He was married to Doris Taft.

Any person that can help me, please contact me via email. Thanks
