Hi -

To the best of my knowledge, no. We are part of the family of Stephen and Zulima Thacker, of Conn and NY state, earliest known date mid-1700s. I refer to this as the 'northern' Thacker family, since they are (as far as I have been able to determine) completely separate from the 1600-era VA Thackers (who of course became most or all of the Thackers spread across the southern states).

Most of Stephen's sons moved to Ohio about 1815-16, then split up, moving north (Mich and Chicago), and west, some as far as Calif. In numbers, however, the northern Thackers today are much fewer than the southern families. There are not many researchers in our family. Ralph W. Thacker did a lot of work years ago; I seem to be the main one these days.

I would like to participate in the DNA study, but have to wait to next year (2012). It would be very interesting to get a final decision on whether the northern family had any actual link to the VA folks (if that could be shown by the tests). I did a lot of research (years ago, when I was getting started) on the early VA Thackers, hoping to find a link, but without success. Thackers just sort of popped up in Conn. (And one researcher's claim that we came from the Mass. Thachers / Thatchers is without merit.)

Altho most of our tree is fairly straight-forward and fairly well documented, we do have a series of first and second wives, with large overlapping families, thruout the 1800s.

There is a Thacker DNA group on Ancestry and I have collected tests from Ancestry, FTM, and other sites and assembled them on Excel. It may be interesting to how the DNA of this line compares to the others.
Glenda Thacker, Administrator of the Thacker DNA project.

William Thacker of Defiance was b. 1797 in Essex County, NY. His family moved to Clermont County, OH about 1816; and to Defiance much later. William married twice; first to Hester Beatty; then to Mary Watts Stites Lackey (also her second). He had large families with both marriages. He ultimately moved to the Traverse City, MI, area, with various family members. None of his family were ever connected with Virginia or Ky folks.

If you look in Lewis Co. KY in the 1930 census you will find Robert living with his parents Noah L. and Alice. Then if you go to public trees on Ancestry.com you will find many references to Noah Lee Thacker's line, which is traced by one person back to a William Thacker and a female Cherokee of Virginia. This Cherokee connection has never been supported or documented, despite a lot of research by me and others. No Thacker ever filed to be legally part of the Eastern Cherokee tribe, which would have provided some perks, although by the time of filing so many generations had passed that the bloodline would have been insignificant. There could be Cherokee connections through Alice's linage or Marilyn's. Robert was born May 27, 1925 in Kankakee, IL according to one source. You can probably find his death certificate in the KY records on Ancestry. This is not my line but we are connected back in the early 1700's in VA, which is also supported by DNA tests. If this Cherokee rumor is true, my husband who was born in the mid 1940's is only 1/128 Cherokee which isn't much to hang a tomahawk on. Good luck.

In case anyone wants to read the Cherokee Application for Mandy J. Thacker, it is cas no. 36367, originally submitted Aug 19, 1907. After rereading the file, it appears that her siblings were Nancy Smith, Elliott Thacker, Elizabeth Noah, Richie Stephens, Mariah Gilstrap, Thomas Thacker and Daniel Thacker. In my haste, I misinterpreted that to be a list of cousins because of the variety of surnames.

When Guion Miller's office sent a letter to her and it was returned, they contacted her attorney who responded that she had been dead about three months and "I have been unable to find any kin to her. She seems to have been a lone woman in this part of the country."

It would be interesting to find these folks in public records. Since Mandy was so far wrong on her birth year, could she also be wrong on other information? Or did the attorney write it down incorrectly?

Glenda Potts Thacker

I have spent a lot of wasted time searching the Cherokee legends this weekend but finally found something of substance on Fold3, the subscription site that used to called Footnote.

Mandy C. Thacker is listed in the Eastern Cherokee Applications, but died before her 1907 application was completed and it is listed as rejected. In the 15 page file, she said she was born in 1834 in Hall Co., GA and that both of her parents were members of the Cherokee tribe there. She was the 78-year-old widow of Jim Thacker and her children were William Thacker, born in 1880 and Richard Thacker, born in 1884.

Her father was Isaac Smith and her mother was Nancy Thacker, both born in Hall Co. Her father died when she was young but her mother lived in Hall Co. in 1851 and died in 1903. Her mother had 2 siblings, William and Susan Thacker. William had sons Elliott, Thomas, and Daniel Thacker, all deceased by the time of this application.

Mandy claimed, "my Great Grand Father Echoe Thacker was one half Cherokee Indian. My Grand Mother Susan Thacker was 1/4 Cherokee Indian." There is a letter from the Special Commissioner of the Court of Claims requesting she appear in Gainsville at the Arlington Hotel on July 7, 1908. This letter was returned and her attorney wrote that she was deceased and he was unable to locate anyone related to her.

We know nothing of her husband Jim Thacker from this application, but her claim was through her maternal line. I've done a little searching in census records but can't seem to find the family except for the 1900 census. Amanda Thacker was there with her son Richard. She was born November 1850 and he was born August 1879. A William Thacker, born July 1870 also lived in Hall Co. This appears to be Amanda but she's 16 years younger than the application sited. Someone needs to check into this further as its possible that there are other big errors in her claim. My husband descends from Joel Thacker of Abbeville, SC so this isn't closely related to my line.

Glenda Thacker

Hi, I see that you replied to a post from my husband's ex wife, Stephanie Thacker, who'd posted on the board, searching for my husband's biological father, Harold Dean Thacker. I apologize for Stephanie's lack of reply, but would love to hear from you & would like to find out as much information as possible. Mr. Thacker would be in his 60s or early 70s. Any information would be deeply appreciated.

Darlene Patterson - Thacker

The picture attached shows the daughter (Lillian Thacker Wilson)with her children. Lillian is the daughter of Peter Thacker. My mother (Anna Marie Wilson) is the little girl standing. They were always told they were of Cherokee decent through Peter. Martha Webb Thacker was Lillians mother. She died when Lillian was a young child. Marthas sister Cynthia Webb Powell and her husband Milton Powell raised Lillian. Lillian also died when my mother was young. My mother (Anna) remembers her dad Thomas James Wilson and Aunt Cynthia talking about being indian. Aunt Cynthia said it was not to be discussed. My grandpa had discussed this with his wife Lillian, Peters daughter.
They sure look indian to me. But I don't have proof. Bettie

"Emmer" Haskins.Stephens father was Harrison Thacker who married Louisa Merrick.Harrisons father was Reuban Thacker. His father was also Reuban Thacker who married Jane Ward,(Indian),born 1768. His father was William Thacker, born 1690,Virginia, who married Cherokee Indian. His father was John Thacker, born 1670.
I'M not sure if this relates in anyway to Absalom and there's no proof of the Cherokee heritage that I have been able to find.

Thackers who are supposed to be Native American

The Native American Thacker story has been floating around for about 50 years and unless someone can substantiate it, I think its nothing but a big "float". I've been on every possible legetimate Internet site to research this and come up with NOTHING. The most logical place to search are the Eastern Cherokee records and there are several Thackers but they are dead ends. Male Thackers who married Indian wives or Indians females who married non-Indian Thackers. Nothing fits with our Thackers. BUT I would love to hear from others on what they have found and will be the first to be excited about something to substantiate the Indian tales.

Thank you so much for the info. It seems that Mancil's mode of operation was to leave after a baby was born. I have met his son Manuel in Selma, Tenn. My twin brother Jerry, Manuel, and myself attended a Thacker Family Reunion in 1999 in Tennessee. While I was there I visited the funeral home that handled Mancil's funeral and they made me a copy of their info. It showed he had daughter named Susie that lived in California. I started posting on her married name and on the Thacker message boards. About four months later she called me and we have been best friends since then. She and I attended the 2002 Thacker Family Reunion. We met a lot of nice people but the older ones were not very forthcoming on info. We stayed with Billy Slaughter who is a cousin by one of Mancil's sisters.. While we were in Tennessee we visited Lottie in a nursing home and she could not hear vey well and did no talk much.

I met Mancil on time time in 1961. He was living in a shack on a cotton farm somewhere near the Malden Sikeston area in Missouri. There was a lady and a teenage girl holding a baby on her hip. I have always wanted to know who that baby belonged to or if it might be a sibling.

I have not stayed in touch with Manuel. I do know he had a stroke four or five years ago. I lost my Twin brother three years ago fromPulmonary Fibrosis.

Joyce Thacker Hamlin Moore
