Looking for help in solving my wife's Tharp family roadblock concerning her great grandfather Jefferson (Jeff) D. Tharp/Thorp, abt 1863, married to Laura M. Dickey (Missouri) and Katherine Coil (Missouri). He is listed in Census records as being born in Missouri/Kentucky. We would like to pinpoint his parents and ancestral lineage. He ended up living in Nebraska somewhere between 1902 and 1920 as a widower. Died abt 1944 we believe in Nebraska. Had sons Jess, Emmett and Samuel with Laura Dickey. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!

Reason Tharp and Elizabeth Tucker

For those researching the Reason Tharp that married Elizabeth Tucker, I found his probate records in Callaway County, Missouri, where he died in 1844. This record shows July 30 as the death date. The probate record is #375 and dated August 19, 1844.

John Gibson as Administrator (19 August 1844) and N. E. Branham and Thomas Boyd, Jr. are shown as providing Security. The heirs are listed as Elias, James, Orinta (actually spelled Orynthia), and Elizabeth (the widow). There appears to be no real estate and the personal property is valued at $165.15.

Left with three small children in July 1844, Elizabeth Tharp married Jasper N. [Newton] Moore on June 19, 1845 [the index to the Callaway County record says "Moon" instead of Moore]. The ceremony was performed by Wm. J. Gilman.

He was my third great-grandfather. Family records show that he was born January 14, 1806.
He earliest confirmed record was in September 1789 in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey 7th Day Baptist records. He does appear to be closely related to the Thomas Thorpe line [DNA testing] of Middlesex County, New Jersey. Cindy

Looking for Floyd E. Tharp

I have hit a wall on this line of my family. There are rumors that either my great-grandfather Floyd E. Tharp may have been adopted. Also, my sister tells me that my grandfather Donald Duane Tharp son of Floyd was 1/2 Native Indian. How much of this is true I don't know. I have also heard this to be the other way around. The information that I have is that Floyd E. Tharp was born in TN (not sure of the city/town) 22 Sep 1888, died 21 Jun 1936 in Milan, Gibson Co., TN. Married Annie Nell McCartney on 16 Jan 1926. She was born in Gibson Co., TN 5 Nov 1900 and died in Milan, TN 29 Nov 1982. They had three children Billie Mack, Dorris, and Donald Duane. Any help is appreciate.

Re: Tharp (Isaiah) Virginia, Ohio, Delaware

Chris;
Since I am one of the few surviving members of a diverse and scattered Tharp family, I probably have as many unanswered questions as you do. Through my research there appear to be two lines of Isaiah Tharps. There is my grandfather Isaiah Tharp born in virginia, migrated through ohio to indiana, settled in warren county (north central far west indiana, along the indiana illinois state line) and a second isaiah tharp who took a similar route but ended up in south counties of and around spencer county indiana, then spread to kentucky. Oddly enough they both had sons name Isaiah (in my case my great grandfather) with middle names that started with an F. I'm guessing that your quest is with the Isaiah Tharp that was in south indiana and kentucky. It seems highly likely and even probable that the two Isaiahs had to be related (perhaps first cousins ?) because of the similarities in names, especially middle names with an F...there are Fleming middle names in my family history that puportedly go back to ancestoral surname of fleming. My family is now in lake county indiana which adjoins chicago along the state line. My granfather Charles Fleming Tharp came here because that's where the new york central railroad transferred him. He and my grandmother returned to west lebanon, warren county in retirement and died/are buried there along with my great grandfather and great great grandfather both named Isaiah. because of deaths / divorces / re-marriages, and apparent changes in the 1600 and 1700s after immigration with variations of Tharp / Tharpe / Thorpe / Thorp it gets really confusing. Please feel free to look at my family tree...if it helps any that's great. Thanks for the reply and good luck, if there is something that you think i might be able to assist you with please let me know.
Mark Tharp

Interesting, My g g grandfather was also Isaiah Tharp. While I am not sure, I think he died in Spencer County Indiana. My Tharp family also had connections through Ohio, and Virgina. My grandfather was Christopher and his father was Isaiah Ferdinand and his father was Isaiah Tharp who was a member of the Little Pigeon Church near Gentry-ville,Indiana where Thomas and Sarah Lincoln settled in about 1818 before moving to Illinois. I am sure Abraham was also a member of the church.I have a lot of info on my family but they went in so many different directions I have not been able to connect them all. Some, such as my grandfather was born Christopher Tharp but changed his name to Thorpe. Many had the same name so they went by their middle name or a slang name. William C Tharp, I knew as Cody and Sarah f Tharp as Florence and so on.I would be interested sharing info with you to see if we can connect your Isaiah and mine. My e-mail is nccthorp@yahoo.com. Thanks Chris

It's even more fascinating that an off-the-cuff comment by my dad turned out to be true.
Florida! I’m in Tallahassee. Lynette

Subject to further verification, additions, corrects, etc., here is additional Thorp/Tharp family information:

Vinson’s parents are John Jacob Tharp, b. 18 Feb 1776 Morris Co. NJ, d. 23 March 1859, Noblesville, Hamilton Co. IN, and Mary Benham, b. 13 Sept 1776 NJ, d. 18 Feb 1865, Noblesville, Hamilton Co. IN. They were married 25 Oct 1796.

Mary’s father is Vinson Benham (for whom, I presume, your Vinson was named) b. 1741 New Haven, New Haven Co. CT, d. between 1813 and 1824. Vinson’s father is Ebenezer and his mother is Hannah Jones. Ebenezer’s father is John Benham and his mother is Comfort Mansfield, all from New Haven CT. Mary’s mother is Mary Babbit, whose father is Isaac Babbit and mother is Elizabeth.

John Jacob Tharp’s father is James Thorp b. 5 Mar 1745, Bridge Town, aka Lower Rahway, Union Co. NJ, and his mother is Martha Walton. James’s father was John Thorpe, I believe. From DNA, our Thorp family descends from the family of Thomas Thorpe of Woodbridge NJ, b. 1631. See www.thorpedna.org I don’t believe anyone has yet figured out which of Thomas’s sons is our direct link to Thomas Thorpe of Woodbridge (perhaps Daniel). I have let my subscription to Ancestry lapse due to the expense, but will pick it up again one day. There are several family members searching this family.

John Jacob Tharp and Mary Benham had the following children:

Phoebe – b. 11 Jan 1798 NJ
Charlotte – b. 9 May 1800
James – b. 9 August 1802 (my family) Cayuga Co. NY
Anna – b. 30 June 1804 Cayuga Co. NY
Vinson – b. 20 Oct 1806 Cayuga Co. NY
Thomas Jefferson – b. 10 April 09 Cayuga Co. NY
Martha – b. 18 Dec 1812
Mary – b. 6 Nov 1815
Hanah – b. 8 Nov 1818

For Vinson and Emaline, m. 6 Feb 1840, I have the following information(from Phyllis Adams, 2003:
"Most of my information on Vinson and Sarah Lacey Thorp and their children and wives came from Mrs. Wilber Irwin of Indianapolis, Indiana many years ago. She had done a lot of research on the Irwin family. I have a note where she states that she has a record of their descendants if I want them, they live around Noblesville and have helped her with the Thorp family. Apparently I never did get them as I don't have them in my records. Their children Newton & Jasper born 1854 are twins and never married" recorded by Phyllis Adams 2002). Children:

Ann – b. 1841-42
Mark – b. 1842-43
Phebe – b. 1844-45
William F. – b. 1845-46
Sarah – b. 1846-47
Isaac B. – b. 1850
Rebecca E. – b. 1853
Newton – b. 1854
Jasper – b. 1854
Thomas Jefferson – b. 1856
Albert – b. 1859
Hi. No, sorry, I don't have any of that information. I only found out about Vincent's name b/c I was messing around on this site and ended up tracing back to his name. I hit a wall with Vincent and Emaline b/c I'm not an actual member of the site and could not find anything else with their names. I grew up in Noblesville and don't remember the name Tharp, or at least during my time there were no Tharps/Thorps going through the school system with me. However, I remember my dad making a comment back in 1981 when Princess Diana came onto the scene that his grandmother's family was part of the Thorpe family of London. (Diana's family is the Thorpe family of London) That's all he said about it. This is what I can tell you:

Vincent and Emaline had my great great grandmother Sarah Tharp (Hartley). Sarah married Samuel Hartley and they had my great grandfather James Warren Hartley. James Warren Hartley had my grandmother, Della Hartley. This line is definitely still in Noblesville.

At one point, there is a census in 1860 showing a great deal of children living with Samuel and Sarah (Tharp) Hartley: Mary 22, Mark 15, Pheele 14, William 13, Sarah 11, Rebeca 8, Isaac 7, Newton 6, Jasper 6, Thomas 4, Albert 1, and someone named Uriah Dena aged 41

I would love to know where Vincent's family originally came from, should you have that information. I'm curious as to why his name is showing also as Vinson.

I'm in Florida now, too.

Thanks for writing! Yes. Same family. I am the great, great, great, great, granddaughter of James, born 9 August 1802 in New York, Cayuga County, who is an older brother of Vincent (Vinson). I have birth date 20 October 1806 and death 11 May 1867 for Vinson; married Emaline Wallace 6 February 1840. Do you know whether your Vinson's son Mark, who lived in Kokomo, might have raised a daughter and a son born to his cousin Silas? Silas was a son of Vinson's brother James. Silas moved to Illinois in 1852 or so with Silas's brother John (my ancestor) but died in the Civil War (as did his brother John). I've been trying to trace what happened to Silas and Mary's children after the war and I see children their age appear on the Kokomo census with Mark and his wife. BTW, There is a geneaology dna page for this family of Thorpes (one of my Mom's Thorp cousins participated in the dna study). Is the name still Tharp in Noblesville? I grew up in Illinois, but I live in Florida now.

I am apparently a great great great grand-daughter of a Vincent (Vinson) Tharp that was born around 1804 in New York. However, I have found that he was married to an Emeline Tharp. I am from Noblesville, so I'm wondering is this is the same Vincent that you have listed in this chain of conversation.

Looking for parents and siblings for Demaris Tharp Dormer(1819), George Tharp(1825), and Sarah Tharp Dormer(1830) born in Tennessee. The parents would likely have been born before 1800. Demaris married my great great grandfather Richard Dormer and her sister Sarah married his brother James Dormer.

Have you by chance looked for a will for Isaiah? I got extremely lucky once and the will state "...son of..." and even stated where he was born. I've tried that with Samuel and haven't been able to locate any will, probate, death certificate or obituary.

Those are all worth a try anyways! Good luck!

Debbie
