Daniel Thatcher of PA -> OH -> WI

I'm looking for information about my 3rd great grandfather, Daniel Thatcher (1826-1906), who was born in Pennsylvania, married and had children and married again in Ohio, and moved to Wisconsin where he married for a third time and spent the rest of his days. I'm also hoping to meet and collaborate with others researching this or related lines.

Here's a brief bio:

Dan Thatcher, according to Civil War records I know about secondhand, was born ca. 1826 in Fayette co., PA. He married a Mary Ann (with unverified surname Steen) and they had eight children in Monroe and Washington counties, Ohio. The children were
1. Samuel (1849-1919) m. Sarah Bowersock
2. Nancy (1852-1924) m. Charles Knight
3. Margaret (1855) m John Taylor???
4. Mary Ann (1856-1910) m. George W. Holler
5. William Thomas (1858-1886) m. Carrie P. Ritter
6. Andrew (1860-1944) m. Ella Harrold
7. Eliza (1862-1920) m. Matthew Mulvaney
8. Daniel Jr. (1867-1943) m. Mary Danielson

Daniel's wife Mary Ann died between 1867 and 1870. He remarried a Margaret Martin (1830-1887) in Washington co. Soon thereafter he appears to have moved along with most of his children, possibly in successive waves, to Dunn and St. Croix counties, WI. In 1887 he married for a third time to the former Mrs. William Piatt, nee Ann Virginia Truax. Nine years later Daniel passed away in Springfield, St. Croix, WI. He is buried near some of his children and grandchildren at Teagarden cemtery in the town of Lucas, Dunn, WI. Other children and grandchildren are buried nearby at Forest Hill cemetery in the town of Stanton, Dunn, WI.

Here is a link to Daniel Thatcher in my tree at Ancestry.com:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9364269/person/1827842170

I realize this is an old thread, but Samuel Edward Thatcher was my grandfather's 1st cousin. I have traced this Thatcher family back to Daniel Thatcher from Fayette County, PA, but I don't pick him up until 1850 in the records. I would love to compare notes and learn more about Charles Thatcher and Mary Scheinfelt.

Looking for death years and place of burial for Levi Thatcher (born about 1805 in Bourbon county, Kentucky) and Elizabeth Keithley Thatcher (born about 1811) They were married in Lawrence County,Indiana in 1832 and lived in Missouri on the 1860 census. Levi appears on the voter registration list for Alviso Twp, Santa Clara county in 1867. Elizabeth last appears on the 1900 census for Santa Clara Cty in the home of her daughter, Marion Matilda Shoemaker Shaner. Would be grateful to find their resting place.

I have found what I believe is the death date of Elizabeth K. Thatcher, age 95, in Santa Clara County on 10 October 1907.

You need to take another look at the head stone of Hezekiah Thatcher and his two wives (Alley/Alena Kitchen) and Jane Baugh. Hezekiah was not born in either 1871 or 1879. I am certain that he was born in 1809. His parents (Isaac Thatcher and Mary Gano were married in 1801 (marriage bond) and Isaac was apparently deceased by 1810 since Mary Thatcher was listed in the 1810 census with three male children under the age of 10 (John, James and Hezekiah). Mary Gano Thatcher married again and had another child and moved to Illinois where she is buried (see "Find a Grave.Org"). I have never seen a birth certificate on Hezekiah but all records including his funeral service and obituary says 1809. Thatcher family history says the same. If you need additional information let me know - jtshaw36@msn.com

I am Edward Daniels Thatcher, great grandson of John Betheul Thatcher. Great Great Grandson of Hezikiah Thatcher. I wanted to mention that on Hezikiah's grave marker in Logan Utah, it says that Hezikiah was born in West Virginia in 1879. However, my wife and I obtained the birth certificate of Hezikiah in Martinsburg, West Virginia and Hezikiah was born in 1871 not 1879. I just wonder if our family in Logan knows about this mistake on Hezikiah's headstone in Logan?

It was the North Church, and since he was the son of a minister in England I would suppose it was Anglican at that time. The whole family seemed to be ministers of churches as a profession including at least 2 of his sons, one of which started the Thatcher clan of Lebenon, Ct (Rhudolphis), the other stayed in the Boston area and later took over the North Boston Church. I am the last of one of the lines.
David Thatcher
Dallas,Tx

Thatchers in California

Searching for Littleton B. Thatcher, last seen on the 1850 census in a gold mining camp in El Dorado, California. He was born in Indiana in about 1832 and was the son of John Thatcher and Lethy Jane Roberts and a brother to Sarah Thatcher Lancaster and Lucinda Thatcher Smith. He is on the census with his step brothers, Greenberry and Manford Lancaster. The Lancasters return to Missouri where they are drafted in to the Union Army. But Litteton is nowhere to be found after the 1850 census. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Thatcher/Stevens Quaker Families of Uffington, Berkshire, England

I have recently been researching these families and have written a summary of what I have found. Hopefully it will help some other researchers who in-turn will share with me.
All corrections, additions, and discussions are welcome, either via this message board of e-mail.

darrelldunlop@yahoo.com

THATCHER / STEVENS QUAKER FAMILIES OF UFFINGTON, BERKSHIRE, ENGLAND

Jonathan Thatcher was born on 16 Feb 1667/8 (16th day, 12th month, 1667, Old System). His father was Richard Thatcher. (Society of Friends Monthly Meeting of Reading and Warboro, LDS Family History Library, Film #813689). He was probably born at Uffington, Berkshire. His father Richard lived there in 1670. On 30 Jul 1685, at a Quaker meeting at Challow, Berkshire, about 4 miles from Uffington, Jonathan Thatcher “of Uffington” applied for a certificate to immigrate to Pennsylvania. (Gilbert Cope’s Collection of Family Data, on LDS Film #0517068). He arrived at Philadelphia on the ship “Bristol Merchant,” commanded by John Stevens (Stephens), whom I believe was his grandfather. (The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol.VIII, P.336). His father, Richard, arrived in Pennsylvania around the same time. On 12 Dec 1687, he presented his certificate to the Chichester Monthly Meeting, and is referred to as “of Birmingham.” (Concord Monthly Meeting Minutes, Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College, PA).

Several researchers list Richard’s birth date and place as 1645 at Uffington. This seems reasonable, but I have seen no evidence. He was certainly at Uffington in 1670, when he was fined 5 shillings for attending Quaker meetings in the house of John Stevens, “of Uffington.” (A Collection of the Sufferings of the People Called Quakers, Vol. 1, p. 28).

Richard Thatcher had married Jeane “Jane” Stevens on 24 April 1667, in the Reading and Warboro Monthly Meeting. (Society of Friends Monthly Meeting of Reading and Warboro, LDS Family History Library, Film #813689). Although I have seen no documentation, most researchers, including myself, believe that Jeane was the daughter of John Stevens. John lived in Uffington in 1670, when he was arrested and imprisoned in the Reading jail, for holding Quaker services in his house. (A Collection of the Sufferings of the People Called Quakers, Vol. 1, p.28). His supposed son-in-law, Richard Thatcher, attended those meetings.

John Stevens is a common name and several were born in England during a reasonable time period to be the John of Uffington. One was born at St. Nicholas, Abingdon, Berkshire to Peter Steevens on 1 Apr 1620. Abingdon is about 15 miles from Uffington. However, the most reasonable John Stevens (Stephens) birth (Christening) was in Kingston Lisle, which is only about 2 miles from Uffington. The parents were Michaell Stephens and Catherine. (England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975, as found on familysearch.org).

In addition to commanding the “Bristol Merchant” from Bristol to Philadelphia in 1685, he appears to have sailed the same ship from Bristol to Virginia in 1678 and 1679. He is listed as the agent bringing indentured servants on those voyages. (Indentured Servants Basic Search Results, virtualjamestown.org).

A John Stevens was buried at “Ore” on 23 Jun 1695, as shown on the “Berks & Oxon Quarterly Meeting Digest Register of Burials 1655-1837.” Ann Stevens, “wife of John” was buried at “Oar” in Oct 1699. “Ore” and “Oar” are doubtless the same place. Both are recorded in the Reading and Warboro Meeting. They probably refer to Oare, which is about 20 miles from Uffington.

From these facts, it can be deduced that the paternal lineage of the Quaker, Jonathan Thatcher of Uffington, Berkshire, England and Chester County, Pennsylvania was probably something like this:

Jonathan Thatcher, b. 15 Feb 1667 in Uffington, Berkshire, England; m. Jeane Stevens, probable in Uffington; d. c1750 in Thornbury, Chester (now Delaware) County, Pennsylvania.

Parents of Jonathan Thatcher: Richard Thatcher, m. Jeane Stevens 24 Apr 1667 probably in Uffington, d. probably in Chester County, PA

Parents of Jeane Stevens: John Stevens, b. probably 2 Dec 1621 in Kinston Lisle, Berkshire, d. possibly 23 Jun 1695 in Oare, Berkshire; and Anne, d. Oct 1699 in Oare.

Parents of John Stevens: probably Michaell Stephens and Catherine.

Teresa,

I believe that you are looking into the same line of Thatchers that I am. My great great grandmother was Malinda Thatcher, daughter of Jacob Thatcher. It gets confusing because when Jacob died, Elizabeth remarried and in the later censuses her and the children were recorded as having the same last name as her new husbands. Some of those kids were hers and I believe some of them had been Jacob's. If you message me, I will get the info I have around and send it to you!

Re: Mary Thatcher - Benjamin Merritt Hyatt

Try the court action..

Delaware reports: containing cases decided in the Supreme Court ..., Volume 4
By David Thomas Marvel, Samuel Maxwell Harrington

AZARIAH H. QUINBY vs. J. W. DUNCAN, special bail of BENJAMIN M. HYATT.

Distinction between "citizen" and "inhabitant," in reference to execution process against the body. The writ of ca. ta. cannot be issued against a citizen of the State, without an affidavit of fraud. A man is deemed a citizen of his native State until he is shown to have changed, not merely his residence, but his citizenship.

This was a suit by scire facias, on the part of A. H. Quinby against J. W. Duncan, as special bail of Benj. M. Hyatt. The defendant became bail for Hyatt, in the original suit of Quinby vs. Hyatt, on the 8th of May, 1843; and bound himself by recognizance, that Hyatt, his principal, should satisfy any judgment that might be obtained against him in that action, or render his body in execution whenever lawfully called on, or that he would do it for him. The suit against Hyatt proceeded to judgment; and, on the 17th of April, 1844, a ca. sa. was issued with a view of fixing the bail; which was returned "non est inventus;" whereupon this suit was brought.

The defence to the action was, that by the act of assembly of 1841, a ca»sa. is prohibited from issuing against any "citizen" of the State, without a previous affidavit of fraud; that Hyatt was a citizen of the State, and no such affidavit had been made. The question, therefore, was whether B. M. Hyatt was, at the time this writ of ca. sa. issued, a citizen of the State, under the protection of the act of 1841.

B. M. Hyatt was a native born citizen of this State, and a resident citizen at the time special bail was entered in 1843; he left the State in the month of August or September of that year, since when he had not been heard of.

Upon this proof the defendant asked the court to charge that the right of citizenship in this State having been established, it continued until it was shown by the other side that the party had acquired a citizenship elsewhere.
The Court said, a man is to be regarded as a citizen of his native State, until it can be shown that he has changed this relation by leaving animo manendi, or by acquiring a citizenship elsewhere. (3 Story Com. 564, 674.) And this is to be not merely by a change of habitancy or residence, but by a change of citizenship.

It has been contended that the act of assembly of 1841, which prohibits the issuing a ca. sa. against any "citizen" of the State, is to be construed in connection with the act of 1785, which uses the term " inhabitant;" and that, taken together, the restriction intended by the legislature to be imposed on issuing process to take the body, was designed to apply to resident citizens or inhabitants; and that the word citizen, used in the act of 1841, is to be taken in this sense.

It is true, these laws are on the same subject, but they are distinct enactments, applying in terms to different persons, the former to inhabitants, the latter to citizens; and there is nothing from which we can collect that the legislature meant the same thing by both. On the contrary, by the use of different terms, not having the same meaning, we are to suppose they meant different things. A man may be a citizen, without being an inhabitant, of the State; as a man may be an inhabitant, without being a citizen. This is not only an obvious distinction, but one which the constitution itself makes; as in the qualification of voters it requires both citizenship and residence.

We charge the jury, therefore, that if Benjamin M. Hyatt, was a citizen of the State at the issuing of this ca. sa., the writ was illegal and void; and the return made to it does not fix the liability of his special bail, the defendant in this action; and, on the question of citizenship, it being proved that he was a citizen prior to the issuing of that writ, it is incumbent on the plaintiff to show a loss of citizenship by proof not merely of a change of residence, but of such a change as makes him a citizen of some other State, and deprives him of the rights of citizenship here.

The plaintiff then suffered a nonsuit .
Johnson and Wales, for plaintiff.
Whitely, Bayard and Bradford, for defendant .

Would be interested in any data you may have on death "at sea." Please contact cdonnick@gmail.com

Tks Chris Donnick Zebulon, NC

From my own research I had found that Uffington Woldstone Thatcher is a guess, not a person's name, but belief that John Ringmer Thatcher's family branched east/northeast to Uffington and Woolstone; these are cities in Oxfordshire now, although records should be in Abbingdon, Berkshire or London, I do wish he was a person though, it is possible if he is found to have been that he had founded the two cities, although St Mary's in Uffington preceeds him as does Uffington Castle (a Roman rampart earthwork), then again city names can change; things to do would be to research city histories.

Samuel Thatcher born about 1814 probably New York, married Martha Hemstreet about 1835. They had three children: Anna Mary born about 1836; Emeline Maria born 17 July 1838 in Acton, Halton, Ontario, Canada; and John born about 1840 but moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Martha died early, about1843, and Samuel farmed the children out to various families in the Acton area. Emeline grew up with the Adams family where she learned to be a seamstress. John is found living with his Hemstreet relatives in the 1851 Canadian Census. Emeline moved to Cleveland to be with her brother. Here she met and married Stephen Cole Palmer of Medina Co., Ohio. Stephen was born in Surrey, England, and came to Ohio with his parents and sister.

I am currently a connection to a FREDERICK JAMES THATCHER born 1867, moved to Canada but died going back to England in 1908, and was buried in the Thatcher family plot at Speen. I would be interested to know if this connects to the family that you mention.

Nettie Mae Thatcher?

My grandmother was born on Oct. 16, 1885, in, I believe, Michigan, possibly the Boon, Wexford County area. I was told her original name was Renetta Mae Thatcher and that she was adopted by Daniel and Amanda Kaiser around the age of four. She was then known as Nettie Mae Kaiser. She married Garfield Arthur House in Nov. of 1904 and had two children, Daniel Lester House and Ivah Amanda House. She died Sept. 26, 1969 in Seattle, WA. She was going by the name Mae Riches. I have information on the Kaiser's, but I am looking for info on the Thatcher side of the family. Because she was adopted, I am finding nothing. Can anyone help?

This is something of interest; Broyle Place or just Ringmer, Sussex, England, United Kingdom; further findings; associations with the location go back further than John Ringmer Thatcher; found: [Andrewe Thetchere was baptised in Ringmer Church in 1403.]. Using search at Google of : john thatcher ringmer broyle; this brings a record back in Google Books matching a book or rather a volume of a book: "The Reliquary and illustrated archæologist", Volume 8 By John Charles Cox, John Romilly Allen; this may contain the first Coat of Arms for the Thatcher family name an page 156 of the volume. I had also seen where the Moline Cross appears to have originated in the Ringmer area (The Moline Cross is the cross that is used on Thatcher Coats of Arms, in heraldry the Moline Cross means eighth son; in the image Triquetras are visible in the ends of the limbs of the cross on page 186, and it is mentioned on page 185 of the volume). There are a few other books that return for Broyle Place and some go into more detail on the transaction which placed the property under John Thatcher [sometimes shown as John Ringmer Thatcher with multiple spelling variations].

Thanks for posting this and the Willie Thatcher stone. Lucinda and William Thatcher were the parents of Sarah Thatcher, the second wife of my great-great grandfather William Holman Carle. William Thatcher is buried in Alexandria, Campbell County, KY, and the rest of this family are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

William Holman Carle's mother was Mary "Polly" Thatcher, sister of William Thatcher, making William Holman and Sarah (Thatcher) Carle first cousins.

After this I can't seem to find him at all!!!!
Solomon Loudon was born about 1800. Eliza Barton was born about 1799. The kids ranged from like 1820-1840ish. I don't have specific dates written down, but I can either look it up or send you copies of the censuses that I found if you email me... whichever you prefer!!!
