Dave,

I would definitely be interested in looking through these pictures with you. The Thom's are my wife's great grandparents, so you would be some kind of cousins.

Where are your located? We are in Rockford, IL.

My direct email is pbthomas1@comcast.net

Peter

I do not have any detail on the Robert Cathcart you are referring to; but the one in the Thom line is as follows:

Robert Cathcart was raised by the Craig’s and then married their niece Jane Thom. The Craig’s gave him land in Armstrong, PA. (From either the Samuel Craig book or Joseph Thom book)

"Armstrong County Pennsylvania/Her People, Past and Present" (see source) Vol II, p. 706.

"Robert Cathcart was a native of Ireland, and probably the first settler in the limits of what is now Mahoning township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he located in or before 1805, under an improvement right. He was first assessed in 1806 with 330 acres, one horse and three cattle, at $320. The Bostonia Coal Mines are now located on this land. His two-story red house, the first frame building in that section, was for many years one of the very few for many miles around. On March 10, 1810, the commissioners of the county granted him an order for sixteen dollars for killing two panthers. He cleared the timber from part of his tract, and erecting necessary buildings in time had a fine homestead where his death occurred in 1847, at the age of seventy-five years."

They were married approximately 1799 in Westmoreland, PA
Hi,
I know where Woodside Farm is but, unfortunately, don't know anything about it.
Do you have any family still in the Coylton area?
That's a very good question - to travel to the other side of the world with 9 children. You must wonder if he had a reason for travel, friends or family had gone for work or just decided.

Hi
I am still very excited about this.
I have stayed in Prestwick for a couple of weeks in 2009, and drove around Coylton many times. I found "Hillhead" (mentioned by davidt184) which is where my gg worked as a servant girl before she married. The owners invited me in. I can now see it was her relative's house.
I found a farm that the locals said was a Thom farm, now called Woodside Farmhouse. It is a B&B now. Do you now anything about this? My father's family lived in a cottage on the hill behind, which has been demolished and a new home built there. We often wonder why he brought his wife and 9 adult children to NZ to live (about 1912). My Dad was born in NZ 1914.
Scones on the banks of the Coyle sounds very attractive. I have 5 weeks in the UK.

I'm going to look into the OPR records around the early 1800's and see what can I find.
You must visit Coylton! There's a lovely eating place overlooking the Coyle waters - tea and a lovely Scottish scone!

Hi Maggie
My James Thom was born 1819 as well! He is the one who married Susan Gemmel (spelt Gemmill in the record) in Stair. His parents were David Thom and Janet Galbraith who married in 1818.
Does this fit with your information?

James & Susan Thom had 7 children (I think). They named their eldest son David (b 1841, and their eldest daughter Janet (b 1843) which was appropriate.
My greatgrandfather was the 5th child - Archibald Thom.

I'm sure your Janet must have been a sister of my James (b 1819).

The fact that Archibald named his eldest daughter - Mary McClymont suggests a relationship?
How exciting.
I might make a visit back to Coylton!

Hi,
I have just come across your message through a chance revisitation to the Ancestry.com website.
My paternal grandmother Margaret Richmond (of Coylton, Ayrshire) was a descendent of Samuel Hay & Helen McMillan, of whose lineage you appear to belong. My grandfather, James Thom, was, of course, of an entirely separate lineage. If you could be a bit more specific regarding your interest, and queries, relating to my line of Thom's (whom I have now extensively charted,) I may be able to offer some assistance. I'm unfamiliar with a Gibson / McClymont combination within my own line, but I recall seeing it listed in the descendency of an entirely separate line of Thom's.

davidt184

Williamina Thom

I just received my Grandfather's (Robert Fraser) Military Records and it show that his dad's name is John Fraser and his Mothers name was Wilhelmina Thom. As of 24-07-1940 They resided in Stoneyton Cottage, Mulben, Banffshire Scotland. John and Wilhelmina were retired at that time. Also at this time, my grandfather (Robert Fraser) was one of 11 children. Six boys and five girls. My grandfather was the third oldest. I remembering him mentioning that there were more siblings born after he left Scotland but not sure exactly how many. So not sure if eleven was the total count before he left Scotland or if that total included any children born after he left. Robert Fraser married Edith May Horden and they had three children, Allen Robert, Wilma Margaret May, Gerald Darcy , and adopted one of my grandfathers siblings child named Richard (Rick). I believe my uncle Rick was one of my grandfather's sister's child. My grandfather also worked for a J Urquart of Coward, Nairnshire, Scotland, from 1923 to 1927 doing farm work.
I figure John Fraser and Williamina Thom were probably born abt 1880s.

If any of this information sounds relevant to your family history, please contact me as I have very little information on my grandfather's side of the family. Thank you so much for any help anyone can give me.

Hello. I may be related to you, David. :)

My great grandmother is Jessie Thom (b 25 Sept. 1890), daughter of James Thom & Jeanie Meikle Imrie, sister of: John Thom (b 27 Nov. 1882), James Thom (b 15 April 1885), Robert Thom (b 13 Dec. 1887), Charlotte Thom Oldham (b 18 Nov. 1891) and Jeanie "Jean" Thom (b 4 Dec. 1892).

Sometime between 1892-1911, the family actually moved to England. I discovered the daughters: Jessie & Jean with their parents in Kent, and Charlotte worked for the Kindersleys in Lymington before her marriage to John Eggleston Oldham.

My great grandmother Jessie married my great grandfather, Jose Ma. Alejandrino Manapat, in Southwark, London and moved back to the Philippines in 1910.

I have very spotty information on the brothers: John, James and Robert. From your email, I think you mention being related to James who came to Australia via Canada circa 1909. (From my mom's stories, however, she was told that James was supposed to have died in Canada without issue because my grandfather, Jessie's son Windsor, had the opportunity to inherit land there but decided not to claim it.)

If you'd like, I'm more than willing to share information I've found so far. If you have information from your end, I'd really appreciate the help in finding out more on Jessie Thom's older brothers. My mom doesn't have much and would like to really find out more about that side of her family.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hope Siasoco
USA, Philippines
P.S. Ann Blacklaws' daughter with James Thom, Anne "Annie" Thom (b 21 June 1853) was married to George Milne. Also, James & Ann's son, Robert (b 21 January 1856) died at 18yrs. on 3 Aug. 1874.

My name is Ethel (Lockerbie) Faulds and I was born in Toronto, Canada to Agnes and Arthur Lockerbie. I believe the Fred Lockerbie you refer to was my Uncle Fred and Aunt Claris from Keswick. I know their daughter Muriel was married to a Thom and had Sandra and then some boys but don't know their names. We once had a reunion at my nephews farm near Keswick and one of the Thom boys and Muriel were there. I would love to get in touch with you as I am trying to do some geneolagy on the Lockerbie's. I live in California but we just had a Lockerbie reunion in Keswick on May 29th. forevryung1@hotmail.com

Not your John Thom, but Thom from East Kilbride, Scotland. My Alexander Thom, b abt 1720, d Culpeper Co VA bwt 1788 and 1791 left Scotland in 1745, He worked in Gloucester Co, VA for five years as a shoemaker, married Elizabeth Triplett (1752-1768) Bought land and settled in Culpeper County. They had 7 sons and 7 daughters. Although the name Thom is a shortened name for Thomas, and though Scottish, were not clan affiliated. There are still Thoms in the area of Glasgow.
There is a Colonel John Thom of the Virginia Line in the Revolution, who evidently rated a place in history, as his name is remembered in Warrenton, Virginia's history.

There is quite a file about my branch.

Re: John Thom

This information is from the Russell MB (Canada) history book and according to my dad (William Thom) the information has been handed down through the years and was put in the history book by his uncle.
I don't know if this is the same Thom family but that is my maiden name, so I will tell you a little history of what I know of the Thom name from Scotland.
My roots go back to William Thom a poet who wrote "The Mitherless Bairn" google it and have a look.
Another Thom from Scotland was Robert Thom who in 1669 along with William Cook were sent to "rest" by Claverhouse to encourage other Covenantors to abandon ther heresies. (Not sure if this one would have had any heirs but they do name a place that maybe you could trace back to)
According to our history book, in 1812 two brothers stood on the docks of Glasgow - One ,Louis Thom who went to France and one John Thom who came to Canada and worked as paymaster of a Highland regiment intent on driving back the Yankees in the war of that year. Apparently after the war was over he stayed in Kingston. He married a lady of Montreal who died at an early age. (no name for her) They had a child Charles who became father to James who had his own children Charles, William, Jack, James, Christine, Mary, Elizabeth adn Jean. Jack married and had 8 children, one of them was William Thom who was my dads father. My dad is 86 now so this will give you an idea of the generations this is going back.
The story in the book continues....
The exodus of one brach of the family from Southern Ontario was precipitated by too great o confidence in the prospect of the Goderich and Buffalo railway. In 1859 deviating from tradition of distrust of the world Charles Thom, having sold considerable property to the railway saw it bankrupt. He was compensated by the railway by being appointed station agent at Mitchell Ontario. A work on telegraphy was written by a John Thom.
Thats the old history on my family, not sure if it helps maybe one of the old Thoms mentioned can lead you to your roots. Good luck!

He died in 1891 presumably due to inhalation of stone dust. Annie died in Quincy Massachusetts in 1923. Both were born in Scotland. My Mother would like to learn more about where they came from in Scotland. Ring a bell with anybody?

They had 5 children that I am aware of so far, their names were in order of oldest to youngest Elizabeth, George John Davidson, William, Margaret and Rose. I unfortunately don't have much yet on the siblings of George Junior but I just started. This family moved to Canada and both George Thom Senior and Junior died in BC, Canada.
