Hi Dick,
Thanks for the info on Garrison Thomason parentage. I hadn't found any. I did have some on Lucinda Barnett but you had even more. I will definitely try to digest it all. My friend was happy to hear about it. Her great grandfather was George Washington Thomason, son of Lucinda Barnett and Garrison.
My email is
samolsen@centurytel.net
Thanks again!
Karen

5/19/12

Hello Karen,

Yes, I can. I do not have confirmed parents for Garrison. He died early in the war. I can give you info on Lucinda's parents. Her dad was Thomas Barton -1775-1836 in New York, His dad is James Barnett - 1751 in Va. - 1825 in Kentucky, His dad was John Bennett, 1717 in Hartford Connecticut, died 1790 in New York. His dad was Robert Bennett 1685 in Connecticut, d ? 1760.

Lucinda's mom was Candis Stroud b. 1784 in N. C.. Her mother was a woman named Sally, 1765 in N. C. died 1797 in North Carolina.Candis Stroud had wonderful descendants beginning with her Dad, Wm. Stoud.1761 N.Y. d.1826 in Christian, Ky. His dad was John Stroud 1732 in N Jersey d. 1837 in Ga. His dad was Barnett, Stroud, born 1695 in England d. 1782 in Pa. His dad was Barnard b.1649 d. 1685 in England. His parents were His dad was William Strode b. 1589 and died 1666 in England. Obviously all of these Strode forefathers had wives. An interesting thing about Barnard Stroud. His father William married Joan Barnard.William's father, Edward Strode married Joan Gunning. They produced Barnard's wife, Elizabeth Hivett. NOW THERE IS A STORY. Sarah Connally was the wife of John Stroud 1732-1837. She can be traced back through her mother Margaret Oldham 1709 1762 Va. to John Oldham 1530 - in England and his wife can be traced back to 1510 in England when her father John was born in 1510.

Lucinda Barnett was also married to Royal P. Means and had a child by him named William Means in 1848.

I know that is a lot, but you find all of this out on Ancestry.com. Needless to say, there are tons of children from all these relatives.

I will be happy to get the obits to you if you will give me a regular email address. I can't scan them and forward to you unless I have one. I just simply don't know how to scan on this source and send out.

I will be happy to help you further if you need some guidance on these people I have listed. Also, when and if I can find more Garrison Thomason forefathers, I will be glad to share. After all, I would like to find who my great great great great and beyond Thomason grands are.

Hope this helps you.

Dick Robertson

I believe the gentleman to the far left, seated with beard is Tobacco John Thomason (1828-1911) Can anyone identify others? The couple with the x marks above could be Young John Thomason (1859) and Mary Ellen Postell. I am assuming this because the photo was with my grandmother's things and they were her grandparents. Any help greatly appreciated.

The reason I asked, is that I am seeing a trend - people are apparently taking on paying clients to find genealogy information for them. Nothing wrong with that. However, there are several people who obviously have not even done basic census lookups, which makes me question their qualifications to hire themself out. I have no problems with finding information for people on message boards, but I do have a problem finding information for people who are going to turn around and sell that information to clients.
If that does not describe you, excuse me for my assumptions.

Hello Charles,

Suppose we are distant cousins removed or whatever they say these days. I can help you on the Bridges side. There were tons of Bridges in the Carroll County area. I think when they first moved to the area they settled in around the Parker's Crossroads area. There is a Bridges Cemetery area, although I've never been there. Eventually they made their way into town, Huntingdon, and those at Parker's Crossroadssd took off for other states like Arkansas and Texas.
I believe this may be the Charley you're looking for. It appears his parents were William C. Thomason and Elizabeth Jane Box.

As you can see, the spelling of names isn't always correct. Plus, people switched between using their first name and middle name, or just initials.

1860 United States Federal Census
Name:	W C Thomason
Age in 1860:	23
Birth Year:	abt 1837
Birthplace:	Tennessee
Home in 1860:	District 1, Benton, Tennessee
Gender:	Male
Post Office:	Camden
Value of real estate:
Household Members:
Name	Age
Joseph Box 25
Mary Box 19
W C Thomason 23
-----
These people were living next door to the family listed above.

Charles Box 52
Catherine Box 48
Isabella Box 23
John Box 22
William Box 18
Jane Box 16
Elinor Box15
Charley Box 13
Moses Box12
Susan Box 10
Hiram Box 3
---------------------------------
Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002
Name:	William C Thomason
Spouse:	E Jane Box
Marriage Date:	12 Feb 1862
Marriage County:	Benton
-------------------------------
1870 United States Federal Census
Name:	William Thomason
Age in 1870:	33
Birth Year:	abt 1837
Birthplace:	Tennessee
Home in 1870:	District 2, Benton, Tennessee
Race:	White
Gender:	Male
Post Office:	Camden
Value of real estate:
Household Members:
Name	Age
William Thomason 33
Jane Thomason 27
Charles Thomason 8
----------------------------------
1880 United States Federal Census
Name:	W.
Sorry ---- I don't know about any of these Thomasons. My group was from VA in the 1700s and then in Laurens Dist SC (and most are still in that area). Did your Thomason family come from John Thomason Sr. b/abt 1755? m/Elizabeth____.
His father is thought to be William Thomason but not yet proven. If you connect I would like to exchange information.
Margannals@aol.com

Margaret-Ann Thomason Allison

Will Ira Thomason Texas/Tennessee

I am doing this search for my son-in-law. I am looking for information on his father's family with very little to go on. I know that his paternal grandfather was Will Ira Thomason b. 19 Aug 1908. I find him in the 1930 census living with his mother Virginia Pearl Owens and his step-father William Derby in Knoxvill, Tn. His wife Mary ? and infant son are there also. By 1935 he is in Houston, Tx. He died 12 Feb 1983. We was a veteran and I find the Texas death record and the military record. I can't find Mary's (his wife) maiden name. I think Will Ira's father was William "Bill" Thomason. Any help is appreciated.

thanks!

I am a little curious. You have posted several messages seeking help for your clients. Are they hiring you to do genealogy, or do you work for them in another capacity? If I were searching a new person, I would go to free places such as www.familysearch.org to check census and state records. You can check the social security death index for people who have died recently. YOu can look on the genweb sites (google USgenweb) for each state. In other words there are a lot of free (and Pay sites, such as ancestry) where you can search for records to get a basic idea. Then you can have more information to put in a query to see where to go next.
Searching on www.familysearch.org for Otho Thomason, there is a likely person in Paragould, born September 1899 with parents Solomon and Bessie. You can see the actual census records on that site. His marriage to Florence Rowland is indexed there, on March 27, 1920. She was living in Beech Grove, Arkansas.
Another question - how does Duard Melson fit into the family?
Here's a start.

September 12, 1918 World War I Draft Registration
Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas

Otho Clinton THOMASON, 19, white
F.D. #2 - Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas
U.S. citizen, native-born on September 9, 1899

Farming occupation
Nearest relative: Solaman Obid THOMASON, same address

Otho signed the card

He was medium height, slender build, had grey eyes and dark hair, with no disabilities.

Suggestions: look for him in the 1900/10/20/30 Federal Censuses; for his parents in the same censuses, plus 1880 and before as needed; for his wife, both married and unmarried, in similar censuses; for both in the Social Security Death Index and state death indexes.

Good luck!
I know this thread is old, but I hope some of you who are involved in this thread are still around! :)

msthomason mentions the Thomason's in the same breath as the Bailey's and that is a very important kinship! Maybe more important then you all understand.

I read that a Thomason male had DNA tested with the Sorenson DNA project, and looking at his test results, it appears he is a Y Haplo Group H1a male lineage and is a fairly close genetic match to me. This is important because if this Thomason male is in fact found carrying Y Haplo Group H1a, very clearly speaks of his Romanichal "Gypsy" origins! And most likley of the Scottish Romanichal clan.

One of the Laurens County South Carolina Bailey male descendants has DNA tested, and he is a confirmed
Y Haplo Group H1a male, proving his Scottish Romanichal ancestry beyond a shadow of a doubt.

If in fact the Thomason's are also carries of Y Haplo Group H1a, would also clearly speak of your Romanichal "Gypsy" origins as well!

What really interests me is the fact that msthomason also mentions Wells and Barton surnames.
Wells is a well known Romanichal family surname, and Barton maybe a spelling variation of Burton, and Burton is also a well known Romanichal family surname.

Understand the history here. Scotland and England both had created anti Gypsy laws, and by the 1670's on through the 1700's, both nations were forcefully transporting Romanichal Gypsies as convicts to the American Colonies.

For you who have an Ancestry.com account, you can go read the book: Directory of Scots banished to the American plantations. By David Dobson

In that book it very clearly speaks of the Bailey's among other Scottish Romanichal's who were forcefully transported to the American Colonies as convicts.
Do a key word search on that book: Gypsy and you will pull up many multiple Scottish Romanichal "Gypsies" who were transported to New York and Virginia.

You can read this book online to read more about the
Scottish Romanichal Gypsies for free.
http://www.archive.org/stream/scottishgypsiesu00macr#page/n5...

While I did not see Thomason named in the book, it speaks quite a lot about the Baillie's.
Your Zachariah Bailey is no doubts a Scottish Romanichal Gypsy descendant!

If any of you knows of a male Thomason who has DNA tested, i'd love to hear for certain if he is in fact in
Y Haplo Group H1a.

Donald Locke
