He was illiterate and may not have known his age. Three grandchildren were living with them. If the grandchildren's last name was actually Thompson, they would be sons of one of Samuel's sons. Census takers frequently listed everyone in the house with the last name, even though some actually had a different name.

1880 US CENSUS, Dent, Iron Co, MO, 15 June 1880, p. 486
Samuel Thompson, head, age 81, born VA, father born VA, mother born VA, farmer (b. 1799)
Didama Thompson, wife, age 78, born VA, father born VA, mother born unknown (b. 1802)
Samuel Thompson, grandson, age 18, born MO, father born TN, mother born VA, farm hand
John Thompson, grandson, age 5, born MO, father born MO, mother born MO
Lidda Thompson, grand daughter, age 16, born MO, father born VA, mother born VA, house work
A.
Hi Patrice,

I am currently researching Edward Thompson, who would be my great grandfather (my maternal grandmother's father). I just received his death certificate from a distant cousin, and it states his father's name was Theodore, and mother was Katherine Williams. This information is really new to me, and I am having a hard time finding more on him and his parents, who do not come up in any searches I have done. The death certificate states he died from chronic myocarditis and carcinoma of left lung on March 29, 1949. He lived at 36 Argyle Place Rockville Centre, Hempstead, NY at time of death and was widowed.

I see it has been awhile since you posted this; hopefully you are still interested!

Barb Hollister

This William Thompson married Ann Narcissa Wilson in 1837, the marriage license has Alexander Thompson signing with William, I am wondering if this is his father, brother, or who? I have hit a brick wall with this, I know lots of people have William's father as Nathan "Dutch" Thompson, but I can find no proof of this, so I am hoping that somebody can help!
Thanks!!!

I believe my William had two wives, I only know of the second one who he married in McMinn Co Tenn. in 1840, her name was Margaret Holmes. Prior to this woman I know of at least 2 possibly three children born. The first one (that I know of) was born in 1836/7, her name was Margaret. It could be a possibility, but without know more we can't make a definite decision. Though it does give something to speculate about and to look into. Would you be willing to email me the information you have? I will send my email to your inbox if so.

My ggg grandfather was William J. Thompson born in Virginia around 1809-1811. (He eventually moved to Tenn for a time and then Illinois and Missouri-with a small time in Arkansas). He and his family were in MO on different occasions had three children there, 1856, 1858, and 1862. In 1860 they are found in Arkansas, but in 1870 they are in Dent Co, Spring Creek township. Dent Co and Iron Co are next to one another, and so I thought they could be related...

Wm. J.'s children's names are Margaret, William Alexander Calhoun, Charles J., Rachel, Francis Marion, Permelia O., Martha M, and M.E.

Do you know the siblings of Samuel, and is William J. one of them?

I have no idea what Thompson line I come from! According to my birth certificate, his name was Robert Samuel Thompson, born in Columbus, GA, and was a gunner in the US Navy at the time of my birth in September of 1946. My mother said "he was kind of short and had dark wavy hair". I was born "out of wedlock", so none of my family would EVER answer any questions about him. My grandmother even slapped me one time when I said "my daddy" and told me not to ever let her hear me mention that man again. Understandable for that era I guess. That's the extent of what I know about my Thompson side... not much, huh? I've placed requests on here a few times but never got any responses. I guess there's no relatives out there for me! I'm really getting tired of looking and finding nothing, so I think I need get off this site, because it really isn't much help to me... and I can save the money for a much needed vacation!

Hi Elaine,
I am really no further advanced either. Somewhat bogged down with my two remaining Oz mystery forebears.
Little further advanced in Ireland either save for one further DNA close match from the USA. His forebear from Tyrone migrated to the US in 1880. Presbyterian suggests Scottish.I am near to the point of engaging a professional Irish researcher to see if my quest can be progressed further. There are Derry records available on line. Perhaps if you google (derry muster ireland) you may find some luck. There are some 130 T families in Londonderry/Coleraine circa 1700. Many went to the American Colonies. I would imagine migration to SA would be dated in Victorian times unless your forebear was a sailor.
I will have a look at the DNA minor matches for McCloy and Hughes names and let you know if any evidence pops up.
Good Luck and Kind Regards.
rust

Hi Russell
Some update on my THOMPSON family
1. They were Presbyterian (the Rev. that married them was Presbyterian.
I received a letter from someone on Ancestry "Blackusser"
and he gave this info
He also said that my Thompson's were married into the McCloy and Hughes Families
2. It seems they may have originally ??origins from FIRTH
Scotland
3. They then went to County Antrim
4. Then to Coleraine.
He said I should carry on I am on the right path.
To be honest..............I don't know if I'm Arthur or Martha at the moment
I would have DNA (my only brother died in a car accident in 1965)So I do not have a male for DNA on the THOMPSON line
All the best that side
Regards
Elaine
Hi, I am looking for relatives that come from those areas who might like to get together with the rest of us at Big Greenbriar Pavillion in Great Smoky Mnt National Park on June 30. All day long, bring all pics, family trees, and old family bibles you can find, and a picnic lunch to share and lets get to know each other.

I have been looking for my Richard Thompson for about 15 years and have NEVER had anyone that connected. If anyone out there has any clues for me, please let me know. I am now having trouble with my eyes.

I have a Richard Thompson who was born about. 1825-1830 , supposedly in Tn. he was married to a Martha and they had 3 daughters. They were on the 1850 and 1860 Census for Bradley Co, Tn. but I think it is very possible that they had lived in Rhea, Meigs or McMinn counties in Tenn.

I have been unable to find out who Richard's parents were or if he had siblings. I know he was killed before 1867 because there was a lawsuit against him that started in about 1852 and did not end until about 1867.

He lost his land in this lawsuit. There were several men involved in this lawsuit with last names of Barger,Buttram, Lane/Lain, Seaborn, Johnson and more.

I do not know who Martha's parents were nor her maiden name but someone did tell me it was possible that Martha was Native American and I would never know where she came from nor find a last name.

I can't find where either were born. Richard was in the Civil War, McKinzie's and I think the 64th. Tenn.

Their daughters names were: Martha Caroline, Eliza Jane called Liza and Minervy/Minerva. Martha C. married Isaac Torbett, Eliza (my ggrandmother married John Wesley Perry and Minerva married a Morgan.

I know what happened to Eliza but can't find where Martha Torbett is buried , I know where Manervy is buried but can't find anything about who took care of it to see if anything gave her parents info. I know that Eliza's death info. indicates mother's name is Martha and father is Thompson --that is all that is shown and her own son gave the info. They did not know the father's first name nor the mother's last.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and I am willing to share what I do know.

Wanda
