Re: Robert Thomson

We've got a John Thomson from Ancrum. So far I haven't found either his birth or death, (I'm working on it!) but he registered the birth of a son, James, in 1821 and we can trace from James onwards. I know where John worked in 1821, 1822 and 1827 - on farms all in Ancrum area. When he registered the birth it says he was a householder in Ancrum, so I'm hoping to look for him via that and also through kirk sessions.

John got married in 1821 a few weeks after James was born, but not to James's mother (James's death cert says she was Margaret Smith), but to Hannah Cranston(e). (I can't find any death of Margaret Smith, either!) They then had two sons, both called Thomas and their births were registered in St Boswells. As far as I can see, James was the eldest son and so traditionally he would have been named after his father's father - though that doesn't always help.

The father of your Robert could well be related, I would think.

Hi, I'm researching my wife's family and am looking at Archibald Thomson (b 1820, West Lothian Scotland) and Maraget Thomson (b 1816 nee Paterson, West Lothian Scotland) during the period 1852 to 1860.

The 1861 census entry shows three of their children being born in Russia (Alison 1854, Alexander 1855, Isabella 1857) so am interested in trying to work out which family members were there and why.

Does anyone have any information they can share or suggestions about potential avenue of investigation ?

Thanks, Steve

I am trying to find a Helen Walker Thomson (b1890) who was my Great Aunt...the last info I can find was on the 1911 census where she was a servant for an elderly couple. I have no idea if she got married or when she died and can find no records of her after 1911. She was sister of Mary Findlay (b1888), Jane Williamson (b1892, married to Alexander, known as 'Sanny' Cooke) and Robert (b1897, my Grandad).
I would appreciate any info on what happened to her.
Many thanks
Carolyn

Hi Sarah

I'm not sure if I saw your reply before so sorry if I haven't thanked you for taking the time to look up this info. Was Marion from Scotland? Seems odd to have 2 x M Findlay Thomson's doesn't it? I have no idea how to pursue this search further as I don't know what records are available for immigrants arriving in NY apart from the ship manifest...presumably they had to register somewhere but no sign of her on the census but she may well have got married in between arriving and the next census being taken.
What were the records you had for the border crossings etc?
Many thanks for any help/tips/advice that you have from your searches.
Thanks
Carolyn

BDM NSW is expensive ;I noticed another BDM private website popped up offering the same for $25[still hot].
I noticed from street view that 55 watkin st Newtown and 2 Holt st Mosman residences are still there. We should
"do coffee" and share notes nearby one of these houses then knock on the door for permission to photograph the outside .I doubt if the shed at the rear of 55 Watkin St is there;[how ghoulish of me!] Streetview seems to show roof to the rear boundary.
Ps I put a note on your thread re Sydney Hector Wood today.
Chris

I thought the A may be for Ann and that is how it came to be on the immigration log.
A wild chance, I will tell you when I get the cert.
If it is a failure, it won't be the first time.
Very expensive this family hunting!

A second given name is not mentioned elsewhere.
Chris

Afraidnothing on Margaret but do try Trove ;just search Margaret Wood then confine it to the SMH and the decade you feel there might have been some sort of newspaper announcement n the family [personal]columns .In those days such columns were used intensively especially for funerals .You can gain a sence of the period through such items.
Chris

Well that is interesting, our family's dementia does seem to come late in life, late 70s and they live to 86 ish, so I guess it is probably common.

Did you know anything about my g grandmother Margaret Wood? I had a lot of trouble initially trying to find anything about her family as she was down as Woods on a lot of documentation. But I eventually realised that they had added an s.

I haven't made contact with any Woods, so I am interested to hear what you know. I found that John James Wood died and worked at Darling Harbour. I have his death cert if you want a copy.

Anyway, maybe we can communicate via email or whatever.
Looking forward to it.

Cate

Hi Cate;Dementia?;no; not on that side of the family. not me or my sisters /brother[ages 61/65/72]Inherited propensity to depression/anxiety? maybe .My Dad [
Noel Wood,an only child] had a touch of the Black Dog really forcing him to leave a well paid job in the 1960's and of course his Granddad suicided as a result of "melancholia"[Coroner] after retiring.Maybe he went broke??I don't know and like you there is no-one left to ask.I am no medico but I can't see depression and dementia being related .Noel died at age 86, in 2001 from physical ailments ,not mental;he was pretty alert to the end.His father Sydney Edward was a publican and bookie but died young[46] .I guess the pub idea came from the Claude Fay side of the family.I am out of room ;will revert to email.Chris

So good to hear from you again Christopher
My home email is kaces@bigpond.com, it might be easier to correspond with that.
I have already bought George Edward's death cert, George Frederick's marriage cert to Mary Ann Ryan and James John Wood's death certificate.
My g grandmother was Margaret Wood, daughter of George Frederick (brother of Sydney). Margaret married Arthur Russell and had Susan, my grandmother. Susan had John William, my father.

Unfortunately, I didn't know of any family of Margaret's who were alive and I have to wonder whether Margaret had some sort of falling out with the family. She did have a child, Dorothy, out of wedlock and we thought this may be a reason. But we don't really have a clue. My grandmother is dead and my father is 85 and has dementia. That is another thing I wanted to ask, there seems to be a strong dementia link through our family; my father, his mother Susan, her mother Margaret and with George's suicide I am wondering if your family has any dementia?

Betsy or Elizabeth, Barbara, Mary or Alexander Thomson,

I am searching for information on Betsy Thomson, her parents and dozen or so siblings who lived in Lochgelly, Fife, Scotland in the early 1920s. Her parents, my great grandparents, are Margaret Black, housewife, and Thomas Hay or Hays Thomson, who worked in the coal mines doing something possibly related to steam but more than likely was just a miner. He died in the mid to late 1930s. (The only couple I can find with these names do not fit with the information I have) The names of some of Betsy siblings are Mary, Alex or Alexander, Barbara and Bunt, which maybe a nickname although I was told at one time she was my grandmother. Betsy Thomson who was born, I figure, about 1905, is my grandmother. She immigrated to the US sometime after her illegitimate son, Ronald, my father, was born in 1923. She left him behind in Lochgelly to be raised by her parents. She later married and had another son here in the US. I don't know his name nor the name of her husband. She died as far as I can remember in the late 1980s.
