For anyone interested, did discover Texas death certificate and Russell's father's and mother's names: Ross T. Thorne and Rosa Glover. So the census listing in my previous post for Charles Byars was for this Russell.

Robert Thorn Obit Died 1855 Canada

Niagara Mail
December 26, 1855
p. 2

MURDER

On Friday night last a man named Robert Thorn, a stone mason by trade, was murdered in his house, Niagara Dock. It appears that he was drinking with his wife and another man named Baker, all of very intemperate habits, and that during their carouse, he was struck on the head with a club either by his wife or the man Baker, it is not clear which. He lived not over an hour probably, after receiving the fatal blow. The woman was arrested on the following morning, but Baker fled over the River, and was followed and brought back. The weight of evidence would seem to show that it was the woman who struck Thorn, but whether by premeditation or in the impulse of a drunken brawl, we know not. The parties were notorious for their drunken and riotous conduct. They had four young children, who it may be hoped will be none the worse from being rescued from the shocking example so long set before them by their unhappy parents.

A more fearful picture of the effects of drunkenness can hardly be conceived than their house presented on the following morning. There was the father lying dead, murdered probably by his own wife, and she sat in the same room hardly sober enough to realize her awful guilt, while four miserable little children stood lost in terror and amazement at the spectacle. Hardly an article of furniture was in the house, a few stools and some rags and dirt, seemed to comprise the whole. Everything had been sold for liquor. Can anything be more appalling than the sight of such dens of misery and degradation as are occasionally disclosed to public view by occurrences like the present? No one could have supposed such a place existed in Niagara, and yet we fear that others as bad might yet be found, where drunkenness and brawling may some time or other lead to equally terrible results. The Coroner took the case in hand on saturday, and the Inquest was adjourned until Monday when the following verdict was rendered:-

"That the deceased, Robert Thorn, came to his death from a blow from a club inflicted upon his head by his wife, Mary Thorn, in a drunken quarrel."

Upon this verdict being rendered, the Coroner committed Mary Thorn to the ensuing Assizes, to take her trial for murder.

hi, Not sure if you will get this, I have been researching my tree for a while and have come across all your threads on George Thorne.
I am the Great grandaughter of George William Thorne ( Sone of George the policeman). My father remembers his grandfather George but never remembers any mention of another family in Canada!
I understand you have done much research on the family and would love to share what I have with you. If you have any photo's or info on George that would be amazing as our side of the family appears to have nothing at all.

One thing that is really bugging me is that in 1890 Ernest and Jessie appear to be living with George and his wife Sarah Ann Mountney, I was wondering if you knew the reason for this, it seems very strange, unless George's mistress was accepted by his wife!

You seem to have so much information on part of the family that we knew nothing about it would be great if you could get in touch

June

Looking for any family connected to Iris Elizabeth Thorn known as Betty. She was born 16 November 1925 in London, England, and around 1945-46 Iris was living with a Patrick Thomas Hayden Wilson in London where it is believed he was a factory worker.
In February 1947 they must have moved to Romford, Essex as their first child, son John was born, and again in March 1948 another son David was born, also in Romford, Essex.
When David was about 3yrs. in 1951 the family immigrated out to Australia, first arriving in Perth, Western Australia then moving to Mt.Isa in Qld.
Patrick worked as a Shop Assistant in Mt.Isa until in the 1970's when he an Iris moved to the Sunshine Coast, Qld.
In 1983 the couple finally married, and later they again moved this time to the Redland Bay area south of Brisbane.
Both Iris and Patrick passed away in July 1998 - Patrick on the 22nd. and Iris on the 26th.
They sons John and David both live in S.E.Qld.

Re: Thorn(e) from Gloucestershire

Hello, I'm new to Ancestry (and a complete amateur...) but trying to track down my Thorne ancestors who I think are from the Forest of Dean area in the 1870s-90s period. The only thing I have for sure is the Wedding Certificate of my Great Grandfather William Thorne to Martha Wood in Dudley, Warwickshire in 1896 and census entries for 1901 and 1911 but nothing confirmed for earlier. However my recently deceased great uncle was convinced (from his memory back in the 1920s/30s) that the family were from Gloucestershire/Forest of Dean and working in the mines. The marriage certificate says William's father was also William, that he was 21 in 1896 (I know that might just be for the sake of an age on the record rather than accurate) and that at that time he lived at The Croft, Woodside and worked as a miner. If that happens to potentially match any of your research I'd be interested to hear! Thanks from Patrick Thorne in Scotland.

Thorn Family Montgomery or Warren County, Ohio

Seeking information in regards to the Thorn family that lived in Montgomery County or Warren County, Ohio during the first half of the 1800's. I have 2 Thorn women in my direct line that I am having a lot of difficulty locating parents for.

One is Jane Thorn 1805-1845 (married Eli King)and is buried in Pyrmont Cemetery, Montomery County, Ohio. Jane and Eli were married in Warren County Ohio in 1824.

The other is Martha Thorn. Martha married Uncle Homan in 1816 in Warren County Ohio. Ucal was born in 1795 in PA.

I believe that these 2 women are sisters. Any information is appreciated.

Ann Thorn born in 1774

Hi I was looking at my own family tree (Henry) and found an Ann Thorn. My husbands mothers maiden name is Thorn. I was wondering if there was any relation between them. Ann Thorn was born in 1774. She was married to a James Sheperd and they had a daughter named Ann (Sheperd), who married my descendent William Henry. My mother in law could only give me her parents names which were Elizabeth Louise Taylor and Sidney Britain Thorn... and Elizabeth died in the late 1990s... so there's a big gap.

Thanks for replying. There are so many Thorns. I have been having such a difficult time doing this part of my tree. I am getting frustrated. I have not seen the names from your family in doing my reseaarch. Julia seems familar to me. I will check my tree to see if it the same one, but Moose I know I have not seen. Is Westchester in NY? If so have you ever heard of Fulton Postcards? This is a fantastic site of old newspapers from all over the state of NY. The site is Fultonhistory.com. You just go to the site and type in as much of the persons name that you are looking for. This might surprise you as to what comes up. I have found birth, death, marriages and society write-ups on relatives. Give it a try. Carol

Hi Davina
I have some Birds in my tree, who came from Ottery St Mary, but they married into a different part of the family. Thomas Bird married Mary Dommett, whose sister Ann married George Hoskins. Their grandson, William George Hoskins married Anna Thorn, daughter of Richard, and descendant of several other Richard Thorns, but this family came from Chagford. Anna Thorn was my great grandmother.
There are a lot of Thorns in Devon, but it's a common place name, which was taken by several unrelated mediaeval families.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Regards
Angela

Thorn Orphans

I’m new to genealogy research and am wondering if anyone might be able to give me some pointers on researching orphans or if maybe anyone has come across some information about my dad’s side of the family. Very little is known. My grandfather is still with us but his memory isn’t what it used to be. Not to mention he shuts down every time he’s asked about his family. I paid attention over the years and picked up bits and pieces but I’m not sure how accurate the information is. Here is what I’ve heard:

Edward A. Thorn, born approximately 1925 +/-

My grandfather is believed to have been born back east, maybe somewhere in NJ.

His family may have been farmers.

His father died suddenly. His mother placed the children in an orphanage and disappeared.

It is thought maybe she was his step mom and she took her children with her but placed the children from the previous marriage into the group home. She may have moved to Europe.

There were approximately 6 children in the family. I know he has a brother that he kept in touch with over the years that lived in Florida but I don’t know his name.

I know for a fact that my grandfather was in an orphanage from an undetermined age to legal adulthood but I have no idea where (NY or NJ would be my first guess).

I also know that my grandfather served in the Navy but not exactly sure what time frame as I can't find any military records for him.

He eventually ended up in California where he got married and had three children.

I’ve tried several different way of searching for records on my grandfather with very little luck. I’ve found some census stuff while he was living in California but nothing that mentions his birthplace. I’m stumped; any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
