1936 in the great state of Colorado, my grandfather Hubert Elson was born. His mother was Cornelia Valjean Kimble(born in Nebraska 1917). She was an unwed mother. The birth father of my grandfather had the last name of Thornbrough. I am seeking any information about any Thornbroughs that lived in the Colorado area at that time. My grandfather was later adopted by his step dad somewhere around the ages of 4-8.

Thornbroughs from Randolph County NC

Updating my previous post ...

I know that my great-great grandfather, Edward Thornbrough, was born in Randolph Cty NC in 1825. He was the son of Thomas and Lydia (Leach), married in 1813. The previous generation to that is where I lose my way. I've looked carefully at a George and William who may have had a son (Thomas) around 1790, but there is little if any documentation available. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: Bealous Thornbrough

Amy,

I have a little more information about Bealous Thornbrough, who married my great-great-grandaunt Nannie Smallwood Fletcher, daughter of John Ezekiel and Mattie Collier Fletcher of Collin County, Texas.

Just this evening I spoke with my great-grandmother's first cousin, who is 94 years old. She remembers her mother telling her the story of aunt Nannie falling in love with a young man who came through that part of the country and was hired by Nannie's older brother-in-law John William Haggard. Evidently, Nannie's parents didn't really approve of the marriage, and they basically eloped. They did move to Oklahoma. Later, they lived in Tahoca, Texas which is where Bealous and Nannie are both buried. I have never heard of Tahoca. Mary Catherine (my first cousin, once removed) remembers that Bealous and Nannie had three children: Frances, Earl and Fred. She said they never saw them but that every Christmas for many years they received a card from Houston with no return address, signed simply, "Earl and Family." So she thinks Earl may have had children.

Walker Pierce
Greetings! My line uses the spelling Thornbrew, but I know that we are an offshoot of the line of Quakers in Randolph Co.area of NC during the late 1700's and early 1800's. Edward, my ancestor, was born to Thomas and Lydia (Leach) in 1825. I am not certain how or when Edward migrated to Darlington County SC.

I am currently researching both Thornsbrough and Thornbrough.
Hi Walker
Bealus was my ggmother's brother. My ggrandmother (Ima THORNBROUGH DREWRY) married Isaac "Ike" DREWRY. They had 3 daughters: Rue (DREWRY) BRATTON (md. Anthony "Tony" BRATTON, Cozette (DREWRY) JONES(my grandmother md. Fay JONES) and Oleta DREWRY (never married). Cozette and Oleta stayed in Snowball, AR where Ima settled and married. Rue and Tony moved to California in the 40s (I think).
My mother knows much more about it. She is Cozette's and Fay's daughter. If you would like you can e-mail me. I am at the college right now and do not have my files here. Where did Bealous end up? I think it was OK. He and ima had another brother Murvin "Jack" who I think settled in OK. It is hard to track this family because each one of Francis Marion's and ??? ( i can't remember his wife's name) kids (Ima, B. and 'Jack') were born in a different state. We'll talk later!
Thanks, Amy

My maiden name is Thornbrough but from what I understand the original spelling of the name is Thornbrugh. I only know that my fathers name is Howard Wesley Thornbrough, and I believe his fathers name was Howard as well. I never met my GF as I wasn't around my father from age 4 - 19. I do however have a younger brother named after a Joseph Thornbrough. My GF cousin Vernon P. Hagabusch. I don't know much more about my fathers family tree other than this.

Hi Cathi

I don't have any tnformation on your Joseph, but the surname of Beeson and Thornbrough/Thornburgh has shown up in my research. I have information on my John Carter who married an Achsuh Thornburgh in Guilford County, North Carolina. I would suspect that your Joseph is connected some how. The Beesons, Thornburghs, Mendenhalls, and Carters were closely connected as I have found out through my research. They were all Quakers who originated in Pennsylvania and migrated into the Carolinas and Virginia. The families then migrated into Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. My Carters migrated to Plymouth, Lyon County, Kansas. My wife and I are going to North Carolina in August of this year to do family research. If there is something you might need please e-mail me direct at GETTINGSJAMES@aol.com.

Sincerely.

James Carter Gettings

Isaac Thornburg (father) moved to Madison (?) County, and died sometime after 1870. Would love to exchange family information with other Thornburg researchers.

Hi there...thanks for the reply...I have my pedigree pretty firmly in place, and I think that if there is a connection in our families, it would be with the children of the three brothers, Edward, Richard & Robert who came over from Ireland together. My line descends from Edward. There is firm documentation of this line in Hinshaws Quakers in America books. You might be able to request a copy to look at from your local library. It is actually a set of 6-7 books, so you must specify the states you are interested in checking out. There is quite a bit of information about this branch in Charles C. Thornburg's "Discourse on the Thornburg Family". Have fun with your reunion!!! Sincerely, Penny Gruver

I have some documentation that supports the Thornburgs were Quakers banished to Ireland and then of course coming to the USA on the Eastern shores to migrate into Heard County, GA - close to the AL state line. There were 11 boys sons of Ellis Thornburg and M. Cabbot that settled in Heard Cnty, GA. One of the 11 - Fred Thornburg moved to Peoria, IL and settled there with his family. I believe his son became a lawyer in Peoria.

If you're interested in the documentation, I'll be glad to send it to you.

There is to be a Thornburg-Black family reunion in Coal City, St. Clair County, AL May 26th,2002. This reunion is being planned by the children and grandchildren of Anna Orene Thornburg-Black, whom was the youngest daughter of Gabriel Deware Thornburg, and Mary Ann America Jane Layton Thornburg. Anna Orene married Joseph Emmerson Black and raised their family in Coal City, AL (St. Clair County) Anyone interested in the reunion - please contact me. We have never known many of our Thornburg ancestors and are eager to learn more about the line.
