Thornburgs of Winnsboro, Louisiana

I am trying to determine the name of my great-grandfather's second wife. His name was John Wesley Reeme. All I know is she was known as "widow Thornburg" when they married about 1889. She had a son from her Thornburg marriage by the name of John Webster Thornburg. Then, she and my ggrandfather had a son named John Mack Reeme, b.1890. She apparently died soon after, as he married the third time to me ggrandmother Frances Cornelia Robinson. My grandfather Albert Reeme was their first son.
My mother said she remember her "Uncle Johnny" Reeme as a joking, funloving young man. I would like very much to know his mother's name for my family tree. Family story has it that his older half brother, John Webster Thornburg, lived with his uncle Matthew Thornburg. Does anyone know this lady, who had married a Thornburg and then married John Reeme?

Again we wish you genealogical success. I think the book that we have suggested will help. It is very conclusive and inclusive. What we have found is that the Thornburgh family is very extensive. The genealogy files are replete with the Thornburgh name. The originals were from England dating back to the 10th century. Our disappointment is that in the old days families did not record family events for posterity. We have pieced together bits and pieces as we are able to glean them from genealogical sites. If we can fill in some of the gaps, please be specific with the items you need assistance. We find the local libraries very helpful and much information can be obtained there.
We hope your Thornburgh side of the mountain is tranquil and everyone is in good health.

Ernesto and Sara (Thornburgh) Rodriguez
6484 Bryka Lane/ Christoval, Texas 76935
Ernesto,
Nice to hear from you both. Yes, my husband's family is descended from a Thornburgh family. I have photos of Sarah Thornburgh Shively with her husband, Michael standing in front of their home in Kenwood, CA. Sarah b. 24 Jun 1830 in Hagerstown, Wayne Co., Indiana, d. 18 Jun 1926 in Willits, Mendocino Co., CA. They had 10 children and my husband was descended from their youngest daughter, Harriet
Salinda Shivley.
I believe that Sarah Shively's (b. 1830) was daughter of Henry Thornburgh(Jr) b 1809 maybe Lost Creek,Tenn and his wife Sarah Reynolds b. Oct 1807 N. Carolina and his father may have been Henry Thornburgh(Sr) b. 1773, Deep River, N. Car m. Ann "Nancy" Maulsby. His father may have been Henry Thornburgh (Sr Sr) b. abt 1740 in Guilford Co., N. Carolina m Rachel Moon abt Jul of 1758.

I haven't worked on this line for about 10 years so it would take me a bit to review. Let me know if you tie into these Thornburgh's.

Debra Keller PS Thanks for the book info.

She's like my great x5 aunt.

Probably different, but one thing to keep in mind during the time is that the spelling of Thornburgh was largely fluid. you might try Thornburg, Thornborogh and even Thornberg. Good luck!

I am new to reseaching the Thornburgh name. I am trying to trace a Edward Thornburgh (born 1741, Franklin, VA) to Walter Thornburgh. I have seen reports that Edward died October 13, 1790 in Randolph County Indiana, but I can't find any documentation. I have read that he left the Quakers in anger after his son John Thornsberry (who was born in Greene County TN) was kicked out for marrying outside the faith (and changed the spelling of his name). Can anyone help me understand more about these people and where they were born, lived and died. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I have added info. My records, dated 1912, show 13 children of Amos. I do not show Daniel (maybe a middle name?). What's missing from your list is: John, 4/15/1796; Phoebe, 7/14/1800; Amos Calvin, 6/29,1805 (brother of my ggg Asa. Amos C. is buried in Unionville, MO); James, 2/20,1807; Jeremiah, 2/23, 1810. Asa is buried in Numa, Appanoose Co. Iowa. We have landgrants for the townsite of Numa. His son, Asa Benton married Margaret (Maggie Mason) and they moved to Spearfish, SD. They had 4 girls, my grandmother Corrine married Lawrence Jones. My great aunt Nellie Meta Thornburg (Corrine's sister) kept the records I'm using. Also, we show a Polly born 3/4, 1802 and Nancy born 4/13, 1813. Asa was born 3/26, 1808, Elizabeth (Betsy) 3/26/1803; Rachel, 7/10/1812. We thought Amos was born in Indiana and didn't know Rachel was a Harbison. I can copy what I have if you're interested. This is short and I'd like to share info if you'd like to contact us directly at brtj68@mindspring.com. Thanks for the great info.
Hello,

My name is James Carter Gettings in California. My Great, Great, Great Grandfather John Carter married Achsah Thornburgh in North Carolina. They settled in Guilford County, North Carolina now High Point. Eventually they moved to Plymouth, Kansas. Achsah Thornburg died while at the Shawnee Mission in Kansas. They were connected with the Mendenhalls and Beesons all Quakers from that area. Don't have much on the Thornburgh but would like to exchange information if this is a connection. My direct e-mail is : GETTINGSJAMES@aol.com

Thanks for any information.

I know John Cantwell's parents were Thomas Cantwell and Eeelizabeth (Smith?), but I cannot find any record of them. Do you have anything? Thanks,
Joan

I found a copy of a handwritten family Bible on file with the Henry Co. Historical Society in New Castle, IN. Inside is a list of the children of these parents.

Re: Benjamin Fletcher Thornburgh and Susan Monical

Gary

I am a descendent of Richard Hope Thornburgh, youngest son of Amos Thornburgh and Rachel Harbison

1. You noted that Benjamin married Susan Monical and his sister Rachel married James Monical (brother of Susan). I show that Benjamin/Susan had 14 children and James/Rachel had 9 children. I have names and most birthdates if you want them. A major resource for your descendent search could be a family history that was published by the Monical family, probably 10-15 years ago. A copy should be in most major geneological collections (i.e. Salt Lake City, Fort Wayne, the DAR, etc).

Secondly, several Thornburghs are buried in the Monical Cemetery, in Mooresville, Morgan County, Indiana. Many of them are family of Benjamin/Susan.
Newspaper archives for Mooresville and Martinsville should be helpful.

Peter Fletcher Thornburgh, son of Benjamin and Susan, was the subject of one of the Illinois Centennial biographies, and many references about him should be easily found, particularly in Clark County area. He had three distinct careers...physician, soldier (including Civil War service), and then clergyman.

The trail for the descendents of James/Rachel can probably be found in Clay County, Illinois, which is where they are buried.

Hope these are helpful leads.

Mike Thornburg

Catawba County Court records of the early to middle 1840's
place Leonard Thornburg of 1850 TN. census as a member of the Throneburg family of Catawa and Wilkes County. If researchers will look at the Early Court of PleasJournals in Catawba County they will find Leonard and his sons John J., Wesly P. and Noah in the court records for minor incidents.
These same sons are found in along with Leonard in the Tn. 1850 and on census.
This confusion between the Leonard Thornburgh and John Jackson Thornburgh, Quakers has been confounded for some time.
I am in hopes this clears it up........
Leonard Thornburg and his sons are of German descent and Leonard's father was Frederick David Throneburg of Guilford, Wilkes and Lincoln N.C. Counties who died in 1837 and is buried along with his wife, Catharine in St. John's cemetary
in Conover, N.C.
Amos C Thornburgh was born 13 Aug 1770 In Frederick County, Virginia. He died 13 Apr 1847 in Xenia, Clay County, Illinois. He married Rachel Harbison (daughter of John and Ann) on 16 Jun 1794 in Mercer County, Kentucky. Rachel was born 29 May 1775 in Botetourt County, Virginia. She died 28 Jan 1849 in Salem, Washington County, Indiana.

Records say that they had ten children, but I have only been able to identify eight. As follows:

1. Ann was born about 1795 in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky. She married William Monical and then Andrew Keller.

2. Fletcher Benjamin was born 25 Sep 1797 and died 13 Nov 1883. He married Susan Monical and they had 14 children. Most of his descendents reside in Morgan and Marion Counties in Indiana

3. Elizabeth was born about 1801. She married John Bunch.

4. Asa T was born about 1803 in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky. He married Nancy Sloan Woods on 8 Oct 1829 in Washington County, Indiana. She was born about 1807 in North Carolina.

5. Daniel was born about 1809.

6. Rachel was born about 1812. She married James Monical and had nine children.

7. Nancy "Polly" was born 13 Mar 1814. She died 8 Apr 1904. She married John H Brewer (who was born about 1805). She then married John Thomas Polson on 3 Nov 1839 in Washington County, Indiana. This couple then moved to Marion County, Iowa, following several other Polsons and Thornburghs.

8. Richard Hope was born 13 Jan 1816 in Washington County, Indiana, and died 19 Oct 1897 in Marion County, Iowa. He married Martha "Patty" Polson, a sister of John Thomas. They had 11 children.

Richard Hope was my gggrandfather.

Let me know if you want additional info.

Michael O Thornburg
