My main interest is in Virginia- Appomattox, actually. But seeing that the name is partially unreadable, it's kinda hard to tell if it reads Hellon- Helloms,Hellum-Hellums,or Nellum- Nellums. It's just my opinion, but I sure wish that the census takers printed the information instead.
Good luck in your search.

Oh my goodness, Bill, thank you so very much!! We did have the transcripts prior....we did think it was Willis, next to Melton on the 1900 census, but the wife's name did not add up as we found the marriage record for Mary Dunsell.
So, this is a prior married name for her....and on the death record they put the maiden. And so, the father of Willis is? Middleton?
This has been a mystery all these years, but I have been researching other names of course and wanted to get back to this one....I can't thank you enough! Kay

Kay,
Re- previous msg death certificate of James M Thornhill Sr. It gave his father as Willia Thornhill. The submitter said she was sure this was William. It is more likely that Willia was a mis-reading of Willis, the person James was listed adjacent to on the 1900 Census for Lincoln Co, Ms.

It gave his mother as Marion Weathy. This was probably Mary Ann Weatherly who appears on the 1870 Census for Franklin Co, Ms in HH/of Olivia McMahon.

Franklin Co Marriages-

DUNBELL, Thomas WEATHERLY, Mary Ann 1871 November,20
http://www.franklincountyms.info/fmarr-d.htm
xxxxxxxxx

THORNHILL, Willis DUNSELL, Mary 1874 July,26
http://www.franklincountyms.info/fmarr-tuv.htm

Was this surname Dunbell or Dunsell??

I hope this helps.

Bill

She married a man named Henry and two girls were listed with them in 1870 and living in Appomattox.
Again, thanks in advance.

This is an update to my earlier request for information on the surname HELLON. After looking at a record on another site, the name looks like it is HELLUMS. Still, any information would be most grateful. Thanks again. Cynthia

Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble connecting some names I've been given as our ancestors. I have George LUSCOMBE (born 1739, Paington, Devon) and then supposedly, his father (?) is Samuel John Thornhill LUSCOMBE, the Surgeon (Christened 1772, Exeter, Devon)...then the names go up from there (Jane THORNHILL, Henry THORNHILL, William THORNHILL to finally, Sir James Thornhill's brother; except I can't find any information on his brothers either. Any information would be much appreciated.
Please e-mail me on cgrebert@bigpond.net.au
Carr and Thornhill descendants, Pike Co., MS early 1800s

Mary Carr, wife of Elisha Thornhill was the daughter of Isham Carr and Susan. Isham Carr died in Feliciana Parish, LA prior to 1815. The widow Susan Carr then married Peter Sandifer in 1815.

Isham and Susan Carr had two other children besides, Mary (b. 1801 who married Elisha Thornhill) and they were Elizabeth (b. abt. 1804) and William (b. abt 1803). They were born in Barnwell County, SC.

Elizabeth married an unknown Thornhill (probably of Magee's Creek, Pike County, MS) and they had one child before Unknown Thornhill died (prior to 1840). They had children Polly A. Thornhill, Aly Thornhill, Wyatt Thornhill and daughter Thornhill.

Widown Elizabeth Carr Thornhill then married Also Boutwell about 1845.

Does anyone know the name of the Thornhill who was first husband of Elizabeth Carr?

------
Isham Carr arrived in Feliciana Parish, Louisiana in July of 1810 (Per American State Papers) so he and his family were residents of the short-lived Independant Nation of West Florida.

This article may be of interest to his descendnats:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100922/ap_on_re_us/us_west_flor...
as well as the attached map.

Tarney Smith
(Carr and Sandifer Descendant)

Hello, Jonette! I think I remember your name from my mother's family. Are you connected to Newmans in any way?

Anyway: The John M. Thornhill you're speaking of is probably my John M. Thornhill, too! He married Nancy P. C. Sweeden and they had several children (Dora Isabel, Nevada Lee (Nevie - my grandmother), John Henry, Thomas S. W., Marion Francis (Sister), Leroy...these are all I remember, as my software is at home, and I'm at work, right now.

All I've been able to find on John M. Thornhill is a reference on one of these childrens' death certificate that he was born in Queenstown, Ireland....and, that there was a reference I found, somewhere, that he migrated from there in 1879. I assumed he docked at Galveston, as that would have made sense with the migration into Texas (specifically Alba, Rains, Texas) where my mother was also born (grandaughter of John M. Thornhill: Edna Newman Brumett).

I don't even know if this thread in this board is still alive or if you'll get this, or not, as this is a very old post. If so, please email me at: judith.newman@ecolab.com. Loyd, my brother-in-law, told me that if I expected to find something on John M. Thornhill to beat my head lightly against the wall for about five minutes, then forget it...because it wasn't going to happen. So I have to prove him wrong... :)

THANKS..and, I hope you've had better luck than I have with this one.

John Thornhill VA>KY>Clinton Co. OH, late 1700s-early1800s

Hi,

I'm looking for any information regarding the STARR and THORNHILL families of Clinton Co. OH

John THORNHILL (b. before 1775 in VA) married Elizabeth STARR (b. before 1775 in ?), before coming to Clinton Co. ~1820. They had at least 3 children: John (b.1804), Amelia (b.1804), and Elizabeth (b.1809), all born in KY.

According to the History of Clinton Co. Book, "The first settlers in the vicinity of Westboro were John Starr, Richard Starr, William Starr and John Thornhill."

John THORNHILL was born in VA, but he had to at least have stayed a while in KY since his children were born there. Perhaps he met the STARR family there?

Any ideas are most welcome!

-Kim (eikome @ hotmail . com)

I am looking for the caucasian William and Lucy specifically. The Thornhills are all over Virginia in the time period, it seems. My Lucy, who went by "Fannie", married Robert Atkinson (my maiden name is Atkinson). They lived in Appomattox in the mid-to-late 1800s! We just went and found his gravesite-such a beautiful area in Virginia!
