Thanks Anita. It's people like you that make ALL the difference in the world to help families find eachother.
I'm not sure if he's a family member but interested to find out. I am trying to find my fathers mothers family, that are of African and Native American descent. I'm unsure if on my fathers side as to whether there is white blood, as we are African American. I'm just trying to connect the dots. The dates are similar...but again, one never know.
Grateful
Erin

My grandmother was the daugher of Daniel Webster Thornton. Her name was Doshie. I never knew him and she talked very little about her side of the family. When I was about 10 (1957) yers old she took me with her to visit a sick relative. I believe this was here dying father, Daniel Webster Thornton. The family was in the Sylacauga, Talladega areas of Alabama. Rural farmers and mill workers.
I think most of my relatives were Irish Immigrants during the Potato famine.

John E Thornton

I'm looking for info on John E Thornton. He was convicted and executed for the murder of his 18 year old daughter Laura Monnier, 5 days after she married. Thornton was born in about 1827 and executed in Fort Smith Arkansas on June 28 1892. Some newspaper reports indicate he was a jeweler, and other information I have leads me to believe that he may have been married and divorced several times. Another newspaper report states that he may have lived in Rock Island (IL?)at one time. The murder took place in Krebs Oklahoma (Indian Territory)in November 1891 and court documents say he was a heavy drinker. Newspaper accounts indicate there were quite a few female relatives present at his execution.

I've located several John Thorntons, but I just don't have enough information about him prior to the murder to determine which one may be him.

Any information appreciated!

Linda,
I know this is an old post. I hope you found what you needed. I believe that John was the son of George and Mary Thornton. George died in 1807 and left John and his brother Andrew most of his property. Mary had died earlier. See Mason County will probated 7 APR 1807. John later died in Mason County in 1849.

I've been trying to track down the parents of George and Mary for some time without luck. Do you have any information on them?

This is an old thread, but I can try to provide some insight from family folklore. Vaudie is my paternal grandfather. Alta Thornton was his mother. I met Alta before she died in the early 1980's. I have been told by many Thorntons, including Vaudie, that she was born out of wedlock to Anna Belle Spurlock of Hopkins Co, Texas.

Alta's father was a German man passing through town. Her family hid Alta in a corn field when this German man came back to town later. I don't know if he knew he was a father or not. I wish I knew how to track his identity down. He would be my 2nd great grandfather. Anna Bell married a man named Eddie Doel Linker when Alta was about 18 years old. I don't think he had anything to do with Alta's paternity though.

I'm stumped on his identity. Any help would be appreciated!

I just came across your posting, and want to thank you for this information.
I am trying to confirm the parentage of my William Thornton, born 26 Nov 1808, in Rensselaer Co NY to William Thornton (b. 1761) and Mary Brenenstuhl; In 1880 William states that his father was born in Rhode Island.
I have found several family trees on ancestry, one of which indicates William (b. 1761) was the son of Ephraim Thornton and Alice Waterman, but there is no documentation to prove the jump from Rensselaer NY to Rhode Island.
Does anyone have church records or vital records that they have found to verify the source of this data, other than ancestry family trees?

In Chilliwack (Sardis) BC. What about you? Where do you live? I don't have a Celina in my family tree (I'll send you an invite to my ancestry.ca tree) so I'd like to be able to add you. In reply to your second message, my daughter became a UE and my aunt is a UE all through the Thornton line. Does this mean that you know Shirley Dargatz (sorry if I don't have the spelling correct)? I know that she is heavily involved with the UE organization here in Chilliwack. Sorry to hear about your bum hand. I sort of know what it's like. I am in the final stages of heart disease and much of my heart is now dead which means blood doesn't pump much to my arms or legs so typing is difficult. Tough for a 54 year old man but it could be worse. I would love to compare my genealogy list with your aunts. I have about 5500 people in my family tree including my wife's but of late I've been thinking that maybe I went through the wrong person who was my GGGGrandfather. So thanks to my father's research (he passed away about six years ago when the family tree only had about 800 people in it), I've now started researching an entirely new tree following the branches he laid out. Since I am permanently disabled and therefore retired, it's great fun. I am excited to see what information we can end up sharing and maybe we can get your aunt involved as well.
I look forward to hearing from you in the very near future. Blessings to you.

Phil

She's put alot of work into it.

I'd write more tonight, though I've a bum hand, and it's late and hurtin', sorry!

Good to make contact, look forward to exchanging.... :)

Celina.

Hi Celina. Thanks for your reply. G.I. Thornton was my maternal great-grandfather. He had a daughter named Myrtle who married Archibald Cramer who then had a son named Fredrick Howard which then produced me. I currently live about 4 miles from the mountain plateau that the Thornton clan settled on and although it is now all developed with houses (alas they tore down the Thornton house about 3 years ago), I can still visit Thornton Estates (a housing development) and drive on Thornton Drive. I have a ton of information on the Thornton's including pictures etc. but am always looking for more information. I am perfectly willing to share any information you may be looking for in exchange for any information you may have.

Kind regards,
Phil

Birdsong/Burdsong Thornton

Can anybody help me with a few details involving Birdsong?

1. Can anyone tell me how they came up with Birdsong's first name is Henry? I see a lot of trees with that as his first name and I've never seen any documents that show that.

2. Can anyone tell me how they came up with Thomas as Birdsong's father? I was once told that they found it on the 1830 census. We all know that before the 1850 census, only the head of household was listed. If his father was living with him on the 1830 or 1840 census it wouldn't show the father. Same if his father was head of household.

3. I have also noticed that some trees is popping up with a Joshua Thornton who died in 1792 is his father and Birdsong was born in 1802. I realize most Thornton's are good men but I don't believe they are good enough to father a child 10 years after they died.

Appreciate any help on clarifying these areas. Has any of Birdson's descendants taken a DNA test?

Harold

DNA/LUKE THORNTON/WILLIAM THE IMMIGRANT
Over the years, there has been much discussion regarding whether Luke Thornton could have been the son of William Thornton the Immigrant. In the past few years, questions have arisen regarding what the Thornton DNA test results reveal about any potential relationship between these two lines. I posed these questions to Chuck Thornton, Thornton DNA Project Manager, and here is his response (reprinted with his permission):

Hi Elaine:

Let me begin by referring you to the THORNTON Surname DNA Project on Family Tree DNA (here):

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Thornton/default.aspx?se...

You have asked two questions: (1) was Luke the son of Immigrant William, and (2) are Luke and Immigrant William related based on the Y-chromosome testing. I will repeat what is on the aforementioned website:

"They may or may not have known each other, but the DNA testing to date proves that these Virginia-ATHORNTONs were all descended from the same genetic line. “The Gloucester Immigrant” William THORNTON first appears in the records of York County, Virginia on October 18, 1641 when he was listed as a Headright on a Land patent application by William Prior. William is seen again on May 11, 1646 when he obliged himself on paper to care for the cattle of John Liptrot. … Luke's first appearance in the records is in Westmoreland Co. on March 21, 1671/2 when he was assigned to inventory the estate of Thomas Foster, and on Sept 26, 1677 when he recorded an ear mark for livestock. … Records show that Immigrant William was baptized in Chorley Parish in 1622, the son of Roger THORNTON of Ryvington, Lancashire. Luke is thought by some to be the son of Immigrant William by a first marriage, although much doubt exists on a first marriage for William and no proof exists of this Luke-William relationship. Some believe that Luke was the grandson of Henry THORNTON and Martha FLOUD of Middlesex, possibly a descendant John THORNTON of Cheshire."

In summary, I think all would agree that there is no "unequivocal, documented proof" that Luke is William's son. While there is NO proof, I think that question remains open because in genealogy a lack of evidence is not proof in favor of the negative. In regard to the second question: absolutely, unequivocally, without a shadow of a doubt Luke and Immigrant William descend from the same genetic line. What connections exist cannot be addressed by the molecular technology (i.e., STR typing), so I can't tell you from the genetic testing whether Luke was the son of William. What I can say is that it is entirely possible that Luke was Immigrant William's son (i.e., the molecular testing does NOT exclude Luke from being William's son). The connection between Immigrant William could have been 1 generation or 10 generations … the molecular testing CANNOT be used to unequivocally define the number of generations. In our project we have examples of individuals that have a Genetic Distance of 0 (zero) over 400-500 years, and some that have a Genetic Distance of 3 over 5-6 generations; trying to use the mutation rates of these STR markers as a means to define the number of generations between individuals is like trying to nail jello to a wall – it is a waste of time, energy & effort. So while the genetic genealogy is an incredibly powerful tool, it does have its limitations.

Chuck Thornton
Maryland, USA
Administrator: THORNTON Surname DNA Project
www.familytreedna.com/public/Thornton

In her letters in the Tulsa library, Amanda mentions her father's and grandfather's Masonic letters that her mother carried all during the Civil War. Do you know where they went during the war? Have you ever seen or heard of those documents? Have you ever seen any pictures of her? I have asked the Methodist Archives to do a search for her father's ordination, but no information yet.

I was able to get a copy of Amanda and Williams marriage license from the Fannin TX records.

Thanks,
Jennifer

I don't know a thing about him other than my mom married him and was with him in the crash that killed him in 1960. She survived and later remarried in 1963 and I was then born in 1964.

Mom rarely talked of him because she didn't want to bring him up in her new marriage. I have no family blood ties to Jerry at all.

Mom is now buried next to Jerry in Sullivan IL.

Re: Thornton Family ( New York Line )

This is a difficult line to track. Yours may be related to mine based on the Onondaga and Pennsylvania background. My research has led me to believe that my Onondaga group goes back to Thomas Thornton who first came to NY with his wife Hope King. This group came from Rhode Island originally. He went to NY before the revolutionary war.

Thomas had a son named Stephen born about 1770. Stephen had several children, one of which is Milo Thornton. He also had a son, William, who is my great great grandfather. Milo moved to Western PA and had a family, two daughters and a wife named Nancy. Stephen moved in with Milo when he was old and my great grandfather lived with Milo as a child. Many of this group moved to Ohio.

Hopefully this will provide a possible area to search. These folks were not literate so look for Thorton and Thorington, as well. Let me know if you find anything. This is a real brick wall.

Thornton Family ( New York Line )

I have spent the last year hitting a brick wall, which I know happens in researching family genealogy. I have been looking into my father's family heritage. Below I will list all that I know.

If there is anyone out there, who may be able to point me in another direction, please contact me.

Thanks

KNOWN FACTS:

Father: Daniel Walter Thornton
Born: 28 April 1942 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA
Died: 18 March 1981 in Opelika, Lee, Alabama, USA
Married: Patsy Jane Lee
** Mom's real name was Bronwyn Kathleen Lee. At some point in time she changed her name and date of birth. Her actual date of birth as 20 December 1952, but she used 28 April 1951.

Dad had two brother. James C. Thornton (whom I am named after) and Curtis Francis Thornton (whom my brother is named after). Curtis F. died in the Marine Corps while in Vietnam. I know that all brothers were in the Marine Corps at some point in time.

Grandfather: Walter Daniel Thornton
Born: 1918 in New York, United States
Died: 13 December 1971 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, United States
Married: Jean Estelle Curtiss (not sure when)

I believe that he had two brother, Clarence Edward and Donald B.

Great Grandfather: Clarence Edward Thornton Sr
Born: 16 December 1891 in Pennsylvania;United States of America (I am not entirely certain that this is the correct place)
Died: ???

Great(2) Grandfather: Charles E. Thornton
Born: June 1871 New York
Died: Possible prior to 1920

Great(3) Grandfather: Thornton
Born: ???
Died: ???
** I was told by my uncle that Charles was a 12 year old miner in Pennsylvania. His father died or left when he was young, and he had to work the mines to help make money. I do find census records that backs this. But I cannot find his father's name. I am fairly certain that his mother's name is Harriet (or some variation of that.)

That is all I have on The Thornton's from New York.

Advise??

Thanks!!
I am searching the Thornton line, but none in my line are named Thurle or Howard. Have you tried the LDS website? It's familysearch.org. They have a lot of records. Also, if they immigrated, try ellis island website. And, if you know the county where an individual was born or died, sometimes the county has a genalogical society with information.
Good Luck!
~Karen

Howard Edward Thornton

My Great grandfathers name is Thurle Clyde Thornton Sr. and he was born in about 1908 and died about 1964. I know he was born in Arizona and died in Washington, he married Claudia Maxine Rogers and they had two boys Jerry Thornton Sr. (my grandpa) and his brother Thurle Clyde Thornton Jr. I know Thurle Sr. married an Estella Blanche coon (she goes by Blanche) and his fathers name is Howard Edward Thornton born August 20, 1872 in either Massachusetts or Vermont and died June 8, 1925 in Washington. Thatis where i hit a dead end and cant seem to find much on Howards parents or siblings except that he has a twin brother but I'm not sure how true that is. Any help would be much appreciated!!
-Jessica

Re: Diophantus D. Thornton

I have sent a message to you already, but I thought I would post a query as well. I think it is possible that D. D. Thornton is a brother of my ggggrandmother Mary Ann Thornton Allen Gates, who lived in Bonham, Fannin County, TX from 1845 (and probably earlier) until the 1880s. I have been researching D. D. for a few days ever since I found out he was the father of William J.
Fannin County, TX Records:
D. D. Thornton married Susan Deland (probably Susannah Vann Delano) on 9/27/1863. (2nd marriage for both)
William J. Thornton married Manda Dulaney (actually Amanda Delano) on 2/12/1868.
D. D. Thornton is listed on a 1866 tax list as a physician in Bonham.
One of the stories passed down in my family is that one family of ancestors moving west lost everything crossing the Red River. No one seemed to know which family it was. Now after reading your post, I think it might have been my ggggrandmother's! Do you have any info about D. D.'s siblings? I realize now after reading your post again that he died in Grove, OK. I will greatly appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks!

Haylow friend. Your query is one that I could have posted myself word for word. I read William Thornton's suggestions in his reply to you and wonder if you were able to find Micauba. My mother's maiden name was Thornton, and I have been researching it off and on for quite a while. An Anne Yates told me about a decade or more ago that DMFT IV was alive but not doing too well. Let me know where your research has taken you. -- Julian Bell
