In the 1881 census there is a daughter Dora aged 2 (b. 1879) with a relative, Alice Marshall, aged 20 living with Ellen and Charles in Greenstead, Essex.

Can't track down a census for them in 1891 or 1901. Will have a look at the parish records next chance I get to see if I can find anything else.

Thank you so much pippa!!! Having done some reasearch on what you suggested i am fairly certin my grandmothers maiden name was indeed Alice Harriet Kerry who went on to marry my grandfather Richard Henry Thorogood! Finaly a step in the right direction of my family tree!!
You mentioned you have ties to the thorogood name, I would love to hear more.. prehaps we are long lost relaives!

dear stephen i think we could be related my grandfather came to australia in 1925 from england and i believe he died around 1960s his name was richard and my nan was alice harriet i dont know all the names of my aunts and uncles but the ones i do were bob .alby my dad fredrick aunty flo and rene my nan passed away 1968 result of a car accident

Having just done a quick search for a Richard Thorogood marrying in the UK in the early 1900s I found that he married Alice H Kerry in Colchester, Essex (year of registration 1915, 3rd quarter, Vol. 4a, page 2191).

I suggest you order a copy of the marriage certificate to find details of them, and their parents, to progress your search - http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

This will also give their ages so you can follow through with birth certificates (if you wish), and also learn more about their families through the censuses right back to 1831.

I am very new to this and wondering if anyone can help?....
I am researching my family tree and having trouble already with my grandparents!!
I know my grandmothers name was Alice Harriet although i am unsure of her maiden name and My grandfathers name was Richard Thorogood.
I know they were born and married in England in the early 1900's and immagrated to australia in 1925.
They went on to have several children one being my father Fredrick James
Any help would be much appriciated.

I'm searching for information on William Thorogood and wife Alice Ann Walker (both born around 1965-1985) - and their son William Jr.

William Thorogood (Snr) owned an Estate and I would like to find out more about it also.

Alice Ann Walker was daughter of Henry Walker and Mary Hannah Holdsworth of Leeds (who also had children Emily, John William, Arthur, Samuel, Alfred) - all the sons became train engine drivers in Leeds.

I don't know anything else about William Thorogood.

My surname is keelan, my fathers mother was Florence Thorogood born in 1925 (now deceased). Her parents Alice (1894,nee Kerry)& Richard(1889) came to Australia in 1927 as indicated on a passenger list from the Find my Past web site. Their children who came with them were Benjamin Robert(9), Alice.M (8), fredrick.J (5), Florence (2)

Family emmigrated to Canada 1907 and settled at 521 Simcoe St., Winnipeg Manitoba according to 1911 Census.

Children were Minnie, John, Thomas William all born in Scotland and Athole C or E born in Canada.

An intriguing item here is the mention of a Willoughby surname. Willoughby also later becomes a given name in the Pate family.

The given name Thoroughgood in the Pate family is more than likely the surname of a Thoroughgood Pate’s mother. Although there were immigrants with the given name of Thoroughgood Pate, this family is researched for a possible connection.

Adventurers of Purse and Person mentions these early pioneers. “There was a Captain Adam Thorowgood who immigrated in 1621 in the “Charles” and served as Burgess for Elizabeth City by 1629.”

Pate and Thoroughgood families: Connections?

There was a Thoroughgood Pate in Colonial Virginia and also in Colonial North Carolina. There is some uncertainty among Pate genealogists whether this is the same man. In any case, I am possibly a descendant of the NC Thoroughgood 1660-1713.

It was a common practice among the Pate's of the 1700s and 1800s to use surnames of friends and relatives as given names. Thoroughgood, in its many variations (Thorowgood, Thorogood, Thurowgood), is obviously a surname. So I have been searching for some connection between the two families, predating the birth of the NC Thoroughgood and perhaps even predating their arrival in America.

There was also a Capt. Adam Thoroughgood 1585-1642 in Colonial Virginia. Audrey Young, a Pate genealogist, has done a lot of research on this man and any possible connections to the Pate family.

Jerry Pait found a strong clue to a possible connection in England, where there was a "Pate Thorogood". See the following:

The manor descended in the direct male line of Palmer to Henry Billingsley Palmer, son of Edward Palmer. (fn. 36) Between 1668 and 1697 a number of mortgages were taken out on Dews Hall. (fn. 37) Among the mortgagees was Richard Lockwood. In 1709 Henry Billingsley Palmer sold the manor to Catlyn Thorogood, an official of the South Sea Company. (fn. 38) Thorogood died in 1732. (fn. 39) His son Pate Thorogood sold Dews Hall in 1735 to Richard Lockwood, 'an eminent Turkey merchant', the son of the above-mentioned Richard Lockwood. (fn. 40)

I realise it's a long time since you posted but I have only just found your post. Eliza THOROGOOD was my Great Grand-Mother, she was b. in 1882 in Spitlefields, then Middelsex, in 1832. She was the daughter of a John THOROGOOD and Sarah Sophia probably SHAW. She married Charles Gilding SCEATS in 1850 and they had 9 children I have some descendant details on all of them.

It is a small world. Actually Art and Ellen never had children. Ellen was married for a very short time before she married Art and she had two children; Charles Urbin and Mary Ellen Urbin. Charles had four children, 3 daughters and a son. Charles oldest daughter Pam is my mother. Grandpa Art was the only grandfather my mother knew. (Ellen's firtst husband never was seen or heard from. Granpa Art was very special to us. Grandma Ellen passed away about three or four years ago in May.
My mother actually came to visit you several years ago while she was on vacation in the UP. She apologizes that she can't recall you are your husbands names.
She does remember that Ethel had 2 sons (one named Jeff?) and a daughter. She said grandpa Art would take her to vist Ethel a lot. I guess they were very close.

Small world. I am that relation, and my husband is now retired. Sad to say, Ethel is the only Thorogood left of that generation. Her sister, Bernice recently passed on. I am having difficulty tracing the Thorogood line back to England. Uncle Art and Aunt Ellen only had one daughter, is that correct? Of which you must be her grand daughter.

My mother-in-law is Ethel Thorogood (Dawson) and she had a brother Arthur who lived in London Ontario but moved to the USA. Their parents were Thomas and Edith Thorogood. Arthur is deceased, but was born early 1900's. Does this sound familiar to you?

I'm descended from Mary Ann Thorogood (b. 1860, Gt Bardfield) who's brother was John Thorogood (b.1854, Great Bardfield). I have a bit of info on Mary/John's ancestors including pictures, but nothing on your John's immediate descendants.

If you look up 'Tagg's of Hackney' family tree on Ancestry.com (it's a public tree) you will find all my info. I have.

Donna, I don't know why I haven't noticed your post before! I have Thurgood/Thorogood's in Carlton-cum-Willingham too, but they arrived there around 1840's, previously living in Lt. Thurlow in Suffolk and Haverhill.

The wierd thing is that I am also researching the THURGAR name later on in the 1860's in the London area! No relation to Thurgood, but to Belcham or Chard if you happen to have that in your research notes.

I think that Thomas Thorogood's wife was Ann Bowman.
William James Thorogood's wife was Sarah Ann Elizabeth Haines.
William's daughter Mary Ann married James Bowdery.
Abraham Thorogood (born 1871) married Agnes Hazell.
I have details if you want them.
I got back to Thomas (1809) too but failed to find his baptism at Paglesham.

I'm looking for info on my great great grandfather JOHN THOROGOOD. He was born about 1847, either in Hemel Hempsted (according to the 1901 census) or in Hampsted, Herts (according to 1881 census). He was a bootmaker and moved to Sittingbourne in Kent and married FRANCES ANN BUSBRIDGE (widow of WILLIAM JAMES BUSBRIDGE and formerly CHAPPEL but born HORTON). JOHN and FRANCES had JOHN, MARIA, PHILIP, ALBERT, CLARA, KATHLEEN, ALICE and my great grandfather, GEORGE HENRY. Unfortunately there seem to be a few possible candidates for this John Thorogood in the birth records so if anyone has any evidence that might help me pin him down and find out more ancestors that would be great.

My Grandfather, Ernest Victor b.1868 had a brother Arthur, an engraver . Their Father was a William. I know at least two of Grandfather's siblings moved to the Manchester/Liverpool area but have no details.

My mother born Doris Thorogood in 1932, sister Rosemarie born approx. 1925 - Parents Stanley and Florence (Davis) Thorogood. They had brother Steve and Stanley. Stanly has a daugher Lynn... born approx 1950? I think Steve is the father of my two cousins... Peter Thorogood and Julie (Thorogood) now married and I don't know her last name.
Maybe you know? I'm in US and not aware of where everyone is now.
