Thrift DNA project -20% off sale through Dec 31st

If you are interested in the Thrift /Frith /Firth DNA project (or know of anyone who might be interested), the testing company, FTDNA, is having a sale, 20%+ off, through the end of December, 2011. There's a link to prices at the Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA Project's site map,
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA (but actual prices should not be discussed on these boards).

Testing 67 markers is preferred, testing 37 markers is still helpful. See also the Background page linked at the project's site map page.

(Ancestry.com also tests DNA, but they do not offer enough markers to really be informative, and cannot upgrade to testing more markers when needed, so FTDNA is MUCH preferred. Ancestry's "43 marker test" is equivalent to FTDNA's 37 marker test. Both are useful, but take a look at the "family grouping" pages (linked at the site map) to see how much more helpful 67 markers can be.)

Getting information by DNA testing is really a team effort: the more people who test, the more information provided by the results. You never know what you'll find until you do it.

To see how powerful the technique is, see the thread "A Thrift connection across the Atlantic, and other news from the DNA Project"
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thrift/300/mb.ashx
and the chart here:
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp
-a Thrift family in Yately, Hampshire, England is an almost identical match to descendants of Nathaniel Frith of northern Virginia born before 1650. DNA proved the relationship even though the most recent common ancestor of the two Thrift families was over 350 years ago -and there is absolutely no written documentation of the relationship.

Please feel free to ask me any questions about any of this.

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net

Re: Laney Thrift of SE GA

I wanted to post an update on the American Indian question. My cousin forwarded a copy of information in a packet on the Thrift family, and other genealogical information, so what I have is fourth or fifth hand. Included are photocopies from what appears to be a genealogical publication; the name of the publication is not shown, but what what is included is a copy of the "Author's Note" page, identifying the author as Luther Thrift of Waycross, GA, dated November 26, 1989.

According to a footnote, there is some American Indian ancestry in the Thrift family, but it is not in my line. Laney (or Delaney) Thrift was the daughter of Carr Thrift and his first wife, Unity. According to the publication, Unity had cancer, and was nursed by Lydia Partin. Several years after Unity died, Carr married Lydia, and they had children. Lydia was the daughter of Robert and Becky Partin. In the footnote, it is stated that Bob Partin was "part Indian and a close friend of Carr." So the descendants of Carr Thrift and Lydia Partin have Indian ancestry. I hope the description of the publication is enough for someone to recognize it, and perhaps follow up on the information.

Middlesesex Co (& Richmond Co) VA Thrifts

This long post concerns 3 (maybe just 2) lines of Thrifts in Middlesex County, Virginia, USA.

For a while I've been wondering which William Thrift was involved in the following:

http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/richmond/co...
Richmond County, VA - Court Order Book 27 (abstracts)
Court Orders, Miscellaneous abstracts (partial)
Richmond County, Virginia
Order Book No. 27, 1825-1832 (indexed)
Library of Virginia Microfilm Reel 44
Page 26; 7 Dec 1825
- The Commonwealth of Virginia vs Peter Northen and William Thrift upon a charge for stabbing and maiming George Rich, a free person of Colour, the Prisoners being now in the jail of this county, on the motion of the prisoners by Philip A. Bramham, their attorney, to be admitted to bail until a court shall be regarly [?] for the examination of the said charge.
The Court is of the opinion that the said Peter Northen and William Thrift may be bailed for their appearance at the said court. to wit, the said Northen to be bound himself in the sum of Two hundred dollars and two securities in the sum of One hundred dollars each and the said William Thrift in the sum of One hundred dollars and two securities in the sum of Fifty dollars each.

Page 29; 12 Dec 1825
At a court held at the Courthouse of Richmond County on Monday the 12th day of December 1825 and in the 50th year of the Commonwealth for the examination of Peter G. Northen and William Thrift charged with having stabbed and maimed George Rich a free man of Colour. This day came the attorney prosecuting for the Commonwealth and the prisoners being put to the bar in custody of Joseph Palmer, Coroner of this county. William Thrift, one of the prisoners by the [assens?] of the attorney for the Commonwealth is discharged for cause of there being no evidence against him touching the said charge. Whereupon sundry witnesses being sworn and examined and the matter fully heard and considered upon agreement the court is of the opinion that the said Peter Northen be also discharged from this prosecution and this court is ordered to be dissolved.

Wish we knew more about what actually happened. I guess no one's too surprised they got off free.

Given the details of William Thrift (b. 1790 - 1800, d. 1800), son of George Thrift (whose will mentions his "good friend Peter Northen") & George's wife Elizabeth (who Tress Pittenger stated without documentation to be Elizabeth McKenney; can anyone support or reject this?), I think that it falls into place. This William Thrift married Virgina Northen, also known as Jane. (OK, which is her real first name? Her name was not mentioned in her father's will, rather it referred to the wife of William Thrift.)

Virginia's brother is the Peter G Northen who was mentioned in the report of the stabbing & maiming of George Rich.

I obtained a portion of a book written ~1906 called "A Short History of the Northen Family in the United States: 1635 to 1900" by Reverend E. E. Northen, and from this was able to add several Thrifts to the Frith /Thrift family tree. Several Northen, Bryant, & Thrift families were fairly close. Many Northens were centered near Village, VA.

Here's why I am wondering whether George Thrift's wife was Elizabeth McKenney or someone else, possibly Jane Northen. (Maybe this Jane Northen was George's second wife, and his last 3 kids were by her.) Who is Alexander Bryant, & who the heck are the Jane Thrift, Jane Northen, & George Thrift mentioned here? The only George Thrift I know of who died leaving three infants was William's father in 1800:

http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/richmond/co...
Richmond County, Virginia
Order Book No. 27, 1825-1832 (indexed)
Library of Virginia Microfilm Reel 44
Page 47; 6 Mar 1826
Whitfield Brook plt vs Alexander Bryant deft upon a motion to recover the amt of an [escow?] in the name of the plt vs Jane Northen and George Thrift.

Page 257; 1 Dec 1828
On the motion of Robert Weir ordered that the widow of George Thrift decd be summoned to appear here at the [?] next term to say whether or not she will take admon of her said husband's estate.

Page 268; 2 Mar 1829
Admon. of the Estate of Geo Thrift decd granted to Sam. W. Neasom. [Note: Named as Samuel W. Neasom in other entries]

Page 375; Aug 1830
An inventory and appraisement of the Estate of George Thrift decd recorded.

Page 438; 4 Oct 1831
On the motion of Jane Thrift by Philip A. Bramham her attorney. It is ordered by the court that Samuel W. Neasom the admor of George Thrift decd pay to her the said Jane Thrift who is the widow of the said George Thrift decd the amount reported by Com. Joseph Palmer to be due the Estate of the said George by the admor for the support of the three infant children of the said George and the Court doth sanction the said admor having paid to the said Jane Thrift her third part of the said Balance found due by the said admor.

EDIT: the latter 3 entries must refer to a George Thrift of Richmond Co, VA, who I don't have any other record for, wife Jane unknown. He died before 12/1/1828, leaving three minor children who were born 1810-1828 (probably closer to 1828).

_________________________
Richard Alton Thrift (hey Richard, please contact me!) has posted some descendants of William Thrift and Jane Northen in Middlesex Co. In fact he posted in 3 places; if you are particularly interested in this family you might check all the responses out:
http://www.jenforum.org/thrift/messages/82.html
http://www.jenforum.org/va/messages/8188.html
http://www.jenforum.org/va/middlesex/messages/49.html

I've been able to flesh this out some:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

____________________________
Becky Andrews has been inquiring about another line of Thrifts in Middlesex Co, starting with William (no dates, unknown parents) who married Catherine unknown, and had Robert T Thrift born ~1814. I have found this family tree online at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

There is only one Thrift in the Middlesex Co census of 1810; his name is William. If it is either of the above William Thrifts, it is likely to be the earlier one who married Catherine by 1814, rather than the one who married Virginia /Jane by 1819. But maybe it's both. The William Thrift in the census was listed as being 26-45 years old, born by 1784. On the face of it, it seems this can't be William the son of George. George was married in 1788, and if his will named his kids in birth order, then William who married Virgina was 3rd and was probably born after 1790, 6+ years later.

But I'm still wondering if the two Williams might be the same. Maybe his age just got entered into the wrong column in the census. Maybe Catherine was the first wife, and Virgina/Jane was the second. Robert T Thrift was born 1814, so (ignoring the 1810 census) his father must have been born by ~1794. That fits. (It might even be that Robert T Thrift is a brother of Richard T Thrift in Sue's husband's line, born just a year earlier. The affinity to Bryants fits, as does the middle initial. Robert T Thrift had a son named William T Thrift, and another son named Richard Thrift.)

Can anyone come up with more data (or insights) that can help resolve all these questions?

This might be worth investing in DNA testing.

_________________________________
There is one more line of Thrifts in Middlesex Co that I know of. This is in my line from Joseph Bridgeman Thrift & Clara Purcell:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

regards
Richard Thrift
Maeve Shankey Kyle, granddaughter of William E. Thrift

There is a very interesting interview with Maeve Shankey Kyle, granddaughter of William E. Thrift (daughter of Enid Thrift & Carrodus Gilbert Shankey), with some interesting insights into life in Ireland in the mid-1900s. This is one of Turtle Bunbury's "SPORTING LEGENDS OF IRELAND" series. "Maeve, of course, is best known as the first woman to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games -- which she did three times -- in Melbourne (1956), Rome ('60) and then Tokyo ('64)"

http://www.turtlebunbury.com/interviews/interviews_ireland/s...

"Maeve’s great-uncle Harry Thrift features in Ulysses, riding a bicycle, although his name is changed from ‘Thrift’ to ‘Shrift’ in later editions, prompting a article called ‘The Lost Cyclist’. Maeve believes it was actually based on her grandfather, Harry’s brother, who rode a bike competitively and was one of the first people in Ireland with pneumatic tyres. Harry was later Bursar of Trinity College Dublin,"

" ‘Women were seriously second class citizens at that time’, she continues. ‘I’ve always been fascinated by Algeria and Morocco and Pakistan where women didn’t take part in any athletic events until very recently. Or if they did, they had to run in trousers like the Afghan girl in Beijing. But it was hugely important that she ran. It was a massive step in the right direction. But it was the same with the girls who played camogie in long black stockings, no gap between their knickers and the top of their stocking … I can understand why Muslim girls get upset. It was part of the culture you were involved in. We had to be covered. Our faces didn’t have to be covered but the rest of us did. The first women’s international between Alexandra and England took place behind a wall and men were not permitted to view it! 1896 or thereabouts. The women wore hats with hatpins. The hatpins had to be banned eventually in case they caused a danger. But that’s the way it was.’ "

A briefer interview can be found by an internet search for "Maeve enters Hall of Fame". (Unfortunately I can't give the actual link, for fear the ancestry dot com nannies who can't even follow their own guidelines will delete the post.) "...the story is told of Maeve talking to Billy Morton in the middle of College Park during a major athletics promotion -- all-male of course -- and Billy, unaware that an open microphone was carrying his words all around the ground, declaimed: 'What are you going on about, girl. Do you want me excommunicated?' What on earth did you say to Billy? 'I only pleaded with him to stage a ladies race'. "

WILLIAM EDWARD THRIFT, provost of Trinity College, Dublin, who died on April 23, was born in 1870, end educated at the High School and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he obtained every distinction in mathematics and experimental physics for which it was possible for him to compete. He crowned his career as a student by obtaining a fellowship in mathematics and experimental science at the early age of twenty-six, and five years later, on the death of FitzGerald, was appointed as his successor in the chair of experimental and natural philosophy, This involved much teaching and administrative work, which was increased by the wideness of his interests, and the many demands for the benefit of his co-operation and advice on the boards of various institutions for the advancement of education and other important and beneficent purposes. In 1902 he was elected to the Science Section of the Council of the Royal Dublin Society, of which he remained a member until his death. He also acted for many years as financial adviser to the Representative Body of the Church of Ireland.
I wish I had time to look into the history of all the places mentioned in this thread. If you have info on any of them, please post it here.

Re Thrift Baptist Church in Mecklenburg Co,
8415 Moore's Chapel Rd. Charlotte, NC 28214
and its cemetery, adjacent to 6725 Sullins Road, Charlotte, NC, 28214
Here's a listing of known burials
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/mecklenburg/cemeteries/sull...
(oldest known burial is 1926, no Thrifts were noted.)

I have not been able to find information on who, if anybody, the community of Thrift, Mecklenburg Co, NC was named after. The website of the Thrift Baptist Church
http://thriftbaptistchurch.net/id21.html
has the most info I could find. It says that the community was named after the Thrift Company, but this begs the question of the origin of the company. The Thrift Mill was, as far as I can find, operated by the Thrift Manufacturing Company, and there was an associated "Thrift Land Company." I found one 1913 listing for "Thrift Land Company, Incorporated, Virginia, Cassat Building, York, PA," but I can't be sure that is the same company.

A lot of local information on the Thrift Mill, Thrift Depot, etc, can be found by doing a google search for "thrift site:http://www.cmhpf.org"

See
http://www.cmhpf.org/surveys&rthriftmill.htm
http://www.cmhpf.org/properties/ruralresources911.html
http://www.cmstory.org/cemetery/details.asp?id=167

http://thriftbaptistchurch.net/id21.html
In the years following the Civil War...It was during this period that the Thrift Company built a plant and a later a community that became known as Thrift, NC (also known as Paw Creek, NC). New communities were developed around mills located in the countryside. This phenomenon is easily seen at Thrift. Growing with the construction of Thrift Mill and the P & N Depot in 1912 (and still visible today), the curved streets of the Thrift Mill Village were laid out around 1913. Although engulfed by urban expansion today, this was a rural area when construction began. As Thrift Company hired more people for their textile plant and built houses for them, the area became an active community.
The birth of Thrift Baptist Church...Rev. S. F. Conard, the first pastor, invited the good people of Long Creek Community - Long Creek Baptist Church - to join the people of this community of Thrift in forming a new Baptist Church. Since that day, we have seen their wise planning, and the wisdom and benediction of God upon such a move.
The name “Thrift” was accepted by the church primarily because the community and industrial plant at the time were named Thrift. In the light of such a move, the Thrift Company donated this location of ground to the church. The company also contributed the gracious amount of $500.00. The Thrift Company also donated land for a cemetery (Also See)to be used by both Thrift Methodist and Thrift Baptist churches. On May 12, 1971, Thrift Methodist gave Thrift Baptist their rights to the cemetery. On a hot day in July 1914, more than a 100 people (50 members) gathered for the ceremony of officially starting another New Testament church.

Good to hear from you, Bob!
I can't translate Thriptís either; I'm sure it's not related to our surname, it was just close enough in spelling that it popped up in the search, I thought it was fun. Crete was one of my favorite places to visit in Greece, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it.

The Thrift cemetery in the Day website you mentioned is not in NC, it is apparently in Richmond Co, VA. Those Thrifts are descended from Richard T Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
He must be one of the Northern Neck Thrifts, but we don't know exactly how he connects.

I haven't yet looked into the Thrift cemetery in Mecklenburg mentioned in the list above, but I expect those Thrifts are probably descendants of Allen A Thrift.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...
IF so, they are probably relatives of yours, though again we don't know exactly how they connect. Some think Allen A Thrift descends from William Thrift of Newberry Co SC.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
(We don't know how William connects, but Bob Jensen suggests he may be son of Shadrach Thrift.) I think, due to repetition of the name Allen, it's possible Allen A Thrift descends from John Thrift of Petersburg VA & Long Creek SC.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
But there are other possibilities too.

Richard Thrift
Richard, it's a very interesting list indeed. I was particularly interested in the Thrift Baptist Cemetery in Mecklenburg Co. NC, so I tried looking it up. Turns out there is a Rootsweb page, "Day Family Tree"

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dayfamily/...

That has photos of the gravestones (7 graves by my count) with names and also photos of the Thrifts that are connected. And I don't think I know a single one of them! These are all new names to me and I'm not sure where to plug them in to my own info.

The Greek names, Thriptís and Thriptí (Θρυπτη I presume?) are not any words that I can translate, so they might well be proper names, like a name of a person.

Again, nice list. Lots of stuff to look up, here!

Bob

I found this site
http://geonames.usgs.gov/
which lets you search for places in the US and elsewhere with a particular name. "The original program of names standardization addressed the complex issues of domestic geographic feature names during the surge of exploration, mining, and settlement of western territories after the American Civil War. Inconsistencies and contradictions among many names, spellings, and applications became a serious problem to surveyors, map makers, and scientists who required uniform, non-conflicting geographic nomenclature. President Benjamin Harrison signed an Executive Order establishing the Board and giving it authority to resolve unsettled geographic names questions." Apparently, these place names must have been in question at one time.

Searching for Thrift in the US results in about 30 hits. I'm surprised the list isn't much longer, and that there are so few "Thriftmart Shopping Centers" etc listed. We'll see if this list shows up with decent formatting here:

Feature Name	Class	County	State
Thrift Dam	Dam	Calhoun	AL
Thrift Pond	Lake	Calhoun	AL
Thomas Thrifts Grant	Civil	Escambia	FL
Thrifts Airport	Airport	Baker	FL
Florida Southern College Charles T Thrift Building	School	Polk	FL
Thrift	Populated Place	Jenkins	GA
Thrift Cemetery	Cemetery	Brantley	GA
Thrifty Acres Airport	Airport	Ogle	IL
Southern University Baton Rouge Campus Pinkie E Thrift Hall	School	East Baton Rouge	LA
Thrift	Populated Place	Prince George's	MD
Thrift Road Church	Church	Mecklenburg	NC
Thrift	Locale	Mecklenburg	NC
Thrift Hill School (historical)	School	Warren	NC
Thrift Cove	Valley	Transylvania	NC
Thrift Shopping Center	Locale	Caldwell	NC
Thrift Baptist Church	Church	Mecklenburg	NC
Thrift Baptist Cemetery	Cemetery	Mecklenburg	NC
Thrifty Claim	Mine	Lincoln	NM
Thrift Hall	Building	Kings	NY
Thrifton	Populated Place	Ross	OH
Thrift City Shopping Center	Locale	Cuyahoga	OH
Thrifton Post Office (historical)	Post Office	Ross	OH
South Carolina Noname 37030 D-1644 Dam	Dam	Oconee	SC
Thriftwood	Populated Place	Oconee	SC
Thrifthaven Baptist Church	Church	Shelby	TN
Mud Creek Cemetery	Cemetery	Brown	TX
Fry	Populated Place	Brown	TX
Thrifty	Populated Place	Brown	TX
Thrift	Populated Place	Wichita	TX
Thrift Chapel	Church	Lunenburg	VA
Thrift	Populated Place	Pierce	WA
Thrifty Villa Shopping Center	Locale	Grant	WA
Thriftmart Shopping Center	Locale	Skagit	WA
Graham-Thrift Division	Census	Pierce	WA
Thrift School (historical)	School	Door	WI
Thrifty Oak School (historical)	School	St. Croix	WI

Then to search outside the US
http://geonames.nga.mil/ggmagaz/ turns these up:

Name	Country	ADM1	Feature Type
Thrift Harbour Creek (Unverified)	Bahamas, The	East Grand Bahama	tidal creek(s)
Thrift (Approved)	South Africa	Eastern Cape	farm
Thriptís, Óros (Approved) Thriftí Óros (Variant)	Greece	Greece (general)	mountain
Thriptí (Approved) Thriftí (Variant)	Greece	Greece (general)	populated place

I presume the tidal creek (and the cay) in the Bahamas is named after one of the Thrift /Frith /Frifth families there.
The place in Greece (a mountain, and a town in the valley at it's foot) at the eastern end of Crete is spelled in Greek Thryptis or Όρος Θρυπτή.

Richard Thrift
For the type of mtDNA test mentioned above, you just need to determine the mtDNA haplogroup, and see if it is one of the haplogroups known to be of Native American origin. (For this purpose it is not necessary to compare the testee's DNA to that of someone else, as it is when testing Y-chromosome DNA for a surname project.) Here is a summary of the state of the art in 2008; there may have been progress since then:
http://www.thegeneticgenealogist.com/2008/03/17/the-six-foun...
For those who (like me) didn't recognize the name, Laney Thrift was daughter of Carr W. Thrift & Unity (last name unknown, at least to me). Carr was son of Robert T. Thrift, the earliest known patriarch of this line of Georgia Thrifts.

Since Unity's family is unknown, you probably won't find anything more than rumors; of course family rumors may contain grains of truth, and should definitely be collected, but they cannot be relied on. This type of rumor (full-blooded American Indian) is one that appeals to many people and is heard often, so caveat emptor.

IF Unity (or her female-lineage ancestors) were in fact full-blooded Native American, testing the mitochondrial DNA of her all-female line of descendants would show it. If you are not an all-female-lineage descendant but can find one who is willing, you can help sponsor (that is, help pay for) their test. There may be other descendants willing to help sponsor this; that's how we arranged to test male descendants of Robert Thrift, and disprove a rumor concerning him. Recommended mtDNA testing companies are 23andMe and Family Tree DNA.

(If she were part Indian but NOT via her female-lineage ancestors, the mtDNA test would not be useful in proving Indian ancestry. Although there's a small chance the 23andMe test might show some Indian ancestry in autosomal DNA -which they test in addition to mtDNA- it could not tell you which ancestor the Indian segments were inherited from.)

Richard Thrift

Laney Thrift of SE GA

I am attempting to establish information on my great-great grandmother. Her name was not passed down in our family, but based on information by other researchers, her name seems to have been Laney Thrift. She married Gideon Jones about 1858, and they had a daughter, Pollyann Jones, my great grandmother, born in 1861. The dates are consistent with Laney Thrift being her mother. Family history insists that Pollyann Jones' mother was a full-blooded American Indian (tribe unknown). However, much of the genealogy I've seen on the Thrift family seems consistent with that of white settlers. So my question is, was there any Indian ancestry in the Thrift family? I'm interested in both confirming and nonconfirming information.

I verified the Caswell County statement of Elizabeth on the original at Footnote.com. So southerncampaign.com transcribed it correctly. I am going to have to find the $80 somewhere to join this site. Also one of the gentlemen involved in southern campaign (David Paul Reuwer) has now published 5 or 6 magazines on the Revolutionary War. The last time I heard him speak, this was going national. Send $36 to American Revolution Association, po Box 1776, Camden SC 29021 and receive all back issues as well. Terry

Re: William Thrift, b 1809 Newberry SC

OK, Here's where the problem is:
There appear to be two different Allen Thrifts being confused. (Either that, or there was an undocumented Robert (son of this William Thrift), born about the same year as Allen. That seems unlikely, but possible.)

The 1850 SC Census Newberry County lists Allen as son of William Thrift. (I don't have good access to census info so I'm relying on what has already been posted.) Terry has done some VERY good research on this Allen, brother of Mason Thrift, and from what I can see she is probably correct that Allen's full name is Robert Allen Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
who married and moved to Georgia before 1867. See Terry's posts
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/THRIFT/2009-02/1234...
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thrift/249/mb.ashx

Others have said that Allen son of William Thrift is the Allen (middle initial T or A) Thrift b. ~1843 in SC who served with the 1 Palmetto Sharpshooters then moved to Shelby NC area, married Linsey Emiline Roberts and had kids including Allen Isaiah Thrift. Here are Allen's family and some descendants:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...
He claims his father was born in Virginia. One possibility is that he is son of John Allen Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
whose father John Thrift moved from VA to NC to SC.

I am adding the info to my tree
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&... (William Thrift)

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&... (Allen A. Thrift)

I would like to get YOUR detailed data and bring it to bear on this. Until we see better evidence that Allen who moved to NC is son of William of Newberry SC, I think it would be better to say his father is currently unknown. I think Allen might be in the line of John Thrift (see below) if only because of the repetitive name Allen in that line.
John Thrift b. 6 JAN 1760 in near Petersburg, VA , lived in Cane Creek, Pickens District, SC
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

Similarly I wonder if William Thrift (who has a son, Spencer) might be from the line of Abraham (& Spencer) Thrift, see below. Just speculation. Might be proven by DNA tests.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

I would like to work out the connections of ALL the Thrift lines in SC and NC. My feeling is that they are all closely related, and further I'm guessing they are related to the Thrifts of Dinwiddie Co VA and possibly to Joseph Frith of York Co VA.

Not to sound too much like a broken record, but DNA tests of male Thrifts would be an incredibly powerful way to make these connections. Are there any Thrifts who are willing to join the Thrift DNA Project to help work this out? We do already have results for a descendant of Isham Thrift of Orange Co, NC.

As Bob pointed out earlier on this message board, it is NOT safe to assume that any of these people descend from Richard Frith of Jamestown. I do feel that in the long term we may find more info about Richard Frith and his English relatives, and that based on THAT information we might eventually use DNA testing to see if any of the colonial lines appear related.

Richard Thrift
Hmmm, here's another clue. In 1870 Allen Thrift (b. ~1843) is living with Catharine Thrift, apparently his mother? who is claimed to be from Tennessee! This is not consistent with "Groom's Mother's Name: Mary Thrift" mentioned a couple of posts ago. [Nor is it consistent with William Thrift's wife, Rebecca, being Allen's mother.]

Well, obviously there are errors in the censuses (Threft?), but we don't know which entries are errors. The Threft may be a transcription error, but the name Catharine & state of birth Tenn are not transcription errors.

https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=h...
United States Census, 1870 for Catharine Threft
Name: Catharine Threft
Estimated Birth Year: 1814
Gender: Female
Age in 1870: 56y
Color: White
Birthplace: Tennessee
Home in 1870: North Carolina, United States
Household	Gender	Age
Allen Threft M 27y
Lincey Threft F 33y
Pleasant M Threft M 8y
Mary E Threft F 5y
Margaret Threft F 1y
Catharine Threft F 56y

Richard Thrift

My friend Bob Jensen suggests that this John Thrift born ~1836-1840 is likely to be another son of John Allen Thrift, & brother of Allen (A or T) Thrift of Cleveland Co NC (where John lived in 1910).
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
# Birth: Bet. 1836 - January 1840 in South Carolina
# Census: 1870 Limestone, Spartanburg, South Carolina
# Census: 1880 Limestone Springs, Spartanburg, South Carolina
# Census: 1900 Morgan, Cherokee, South Carolina
# Census: 1910 Township 2, Cleveland, North Carolina
# Death: 28 FEB 1915 in Morgan, Cherokee, South Carolina

https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=h...
https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=h...
https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=h...
https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=h...

The above John Thrift is clearly NOT the John Thrift (also born ~1836) son of William Thrift of Newberry Co SC. This agrees with the idea that Allen A Thrift is not son of William Thrift -if John & Allen are brothers.

IF John & Allen are sons of John Allen Thrift son of John Thrift of Petersburg VA, perhaps it's not just coincidence that John Thrift of Petersburg fought at Kings Mountain, near Shelby.

Richard Thrift

[I've been talking to Ken offline about DNA testing for genealogy; glad to discuss it with anyone else, also.]

Ken, this is probably what you were remembering about "there was another George Thrift, (besides the VA George Thrift) that had an illegitimate son as well. Has anyone tracked this Thrift ancestor?"
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/thrift/1998-03...
from Bob Thrift:
> An interesting piece of information that Luther shared with me that my
> research had not uncovered was something from a Fairfax Co., VA Order book
> that stated the following abstracts: 1788 p. 138 April 21, 1789. "Robert
> Thrift father of bastard child by Mary alias Jane Blackburn to pay $30.00 to
> Fairfax Parish or support child for 10 years. George Thrift sec." It looks
> like this child would have been born before Robert's first wife. I don't know
> anything else about this but wonder what gender this child was and was it
> raised with the Thrift name.

Also,
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/thrift/1998-04...
includes these entries, thought by some to possibly be pertinent to the origin of Robert Thomas Thrift of GA:

> Thrift, George 1756-p. 463 May 22, 1760
> Informed Truro Parish of baseborn child of Pel?tiah Graffert.
>
> Thrift, George 1756-p.4-73 June 17, 1760
> Had George Bryan, bastard child 12 yrs. old next December, bound to him by Truro parish to learn trade of a cordwainer & to read & write.

Richard Thrift

After the hewers had left work, an explosion of fire-damp took place, which unfortunately proved fatal to two men and thirty-three boys who happened to be in that part of the mine. This event occurred only half-an-hour before the pit was to have finished its day’s work, otherwise the loss would, in all probability, have been more extensive. Upwards of twenty men and boys were in other parts of the mine when the accident happened ; but fortunately escaped, a few only being slightly injured by the concussion and after-damp.

Burial Record
BURIALS in the Parish of Gateshead, in the County of Durham, in the Year 1819
Page / No / Name / Abode / When buried / Age / By whom the Ceremony was performed
185 / 1478 / Jacob Thrift / Fell / July 21 / 13 / J. Had the accident happened and hour later, it is said about 100 persons would have perished. Eighteen of the unhappy sufferers have been interred in Gateshead church-yard, and 14 in the chapel-yard ; the remaining bodies have either given to their respective friends, or are not yet taken out of the pit. Amongst the poor unfortunates, were three boys from Whitehaven, who had been taken there by their mother, and obtained work, but were soon after dismissed ; their parent subsequently applied to those in management, and again obtained employment for her children, just in time to share the melancholy fate that has befallen their fellow-sufferers. The same pit, we believe, exploded about four years ago, when considerable damage was done.

The incident is also mentioned here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheriff_Hill_Colliery#Major_inc...

John & George Thrift, disaster at Burradon Colliery, Tyne and Wear, 3/2/1860

This incident is discussed here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burradon,_Tyne_and_Wear#Burrado...
"The inquest and newspaper coverage of the disaster (mostly the involvement of the Newcastle Chronicle) took issue with who should be responsible for both compensation and mine safety in what was to become a hotly contested debate. A group of the more senior Burradon miners: Maddox [NOTE his daughter, John Thrift's fiance, mentioned below], Carr, Urwin (and Baxter Langley, editor of the Newcastle Daily Chronicle) had been at the forefront of a campaign to set up an insurance scheme for miners hurt or killed down the pit. The mine owners procrastinated on this proposal. The mineworkers had enlisted the help, and won great respect, from the editor and owner of a local newspaper, who supported their case with everything at their disposal. The anger felt towards the mine owners and the vigour with which the subsequent trial was fought was all the greater because the disaster had been predicted."

http://www.dmm2.org.uk/individ0/i02465.htm -see this link for 15 newspaper articles (though none from the Newcastle Daily Chronicle) covering the event and inquiry, and pictures of the memorial.
John Thrift
Age: 20
Died: 2nd Mar 1860
Accident: 2nd Mar 1860
Year Born: abt. 1840
Colliery: Burradon
Company: Joshua Bower
Notes: single, brother of George, these brothers were orphaned and were the support of their sister and grandparents, John Thrift was due to marry George Maddox's daughter ; killed in the 1860 explosion (ignition caused by naked light and deficient ventilation)
Buried: [not known]

http://www.dmm2.org.uk/individ0/i02464.htm
George Thrift
Age: 15
Died: 2nd Mar 1860
Accident: 2nd Mar 1860
Year Born: abt. 1845
Colliery: Burradon
Company: Joshua Bower
Notes: brother to John ; killed in the 1860 explosion (ignition caused by naked light and deficient ventilation)
Buried: [not known]
Description
An awful explosion of gas took place at Burradon Colliery this afternoon, by which the large number of seventy six men and boys met with an untimely end. Immediately on the alarm being given instant steps were taken by those in authority to lessen, as far as possible, the effects of choke damp. Mr. Kirkley, the fore-overman, descended the mine with a view to rescue those who might have escaped with their lives, in which praiseworthy and humane effort he was happily successful, as several of the workmen and boys engaged on the Seghill division were brought to the surface alive, and, after the usual restoratives were applied, recovered from the effects of the choke damp. Burradon Colliery, the scene of the calamity, is the property of Joshua Bower, esq., of Hunslet, near Leeds, who had only recently purchased it. A long and searching inquiry took place as to the cause of the accident, but without any satisfactory result.

http://www.dmm.org.uk/news18/8600420.htm
20th April 1860 -The Burradon Colliery Explosion
The inquest on the bodies of the 76 men and lads killed at Burradon on the 2nd of March was resumed on Wednesday morning in the chapel of the village. ... The court was cleared at half-past 2 o'clock, and, after deliberating until half-past 5, the foreman announced that the jury had come to the following conclusion :— "That the accident has been caused either by a fall in the north return, or from Thirlwell's door being left open ; also, there has been part neglect or oversight by some of the officers connected with the colliery and the workmen, in not complaining to the proper party as to the state of the ventilation. The jury, at the same time, beg most earnestly to recommend that additional Government inspectors or sub-inspectors be appointed to examine mines, to enable more frequent official visits to be paid to the workings, and that increased power be given to control the arrangements of those which may be in an unsafe and critical position."
Different family lines

Hello,

I now go by a differnt name for security purposes, but I was born Kenneth Jackson Thrift in Waycross, GA. My sister was Alpha Patricia Thrift and had her name changed to Alley. Our father was Jackson Woodrow Thrift, born in Blackshear, GA. Mother was Charlotte Gay Showers and was born in Winchester, VA. All three are deceased. I am the last survivor of Jack Thrift.
I am married, have been for 39 years to Pamela Jane Wheeler, and we had three children, Hunter Kenneth, Caitlin Fawn, and Elias Edward. They do not go by the Thrift name.
I am interested in having my DNA tested to see if George Thrift (Flannigan) is my ancestor. Anyone who is related to me that has had this testing done please contact me at my e-mail address. kmac44@suddenlink.net
I noticed while reading some of the family lines that there was another George Thrift, (besides the VA George Thrift) that had an illigetimate son as well. Has anyone tracked this Thrift ancestor? If the man who has continued to keep this Thrift page going will contact me I would love to talk to him about the family lines and get some feedback from him. I think his name is Richard Thrift.
I am now 67 years old and my health is not that good. I would like to resolve this family history before I die so that my children will have an accurate record for their own use in the future. Like my sister, I also have hunted old records and must agree with what she has written. Has anyone checked on the Flannigan line using DNA?
I hope to hear from someone soon that is interested in following up on the DNA program. I also would like to contact a lady called Patricia Chancey who asked about Robert Thomas "Bob" Thrift. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Jackson Thrift
A Thrift connection across the Atlantic, and other news from the DNA Project

There have been a lot of changes in the Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA Project,
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA
this year. The one I want to focus on first is that a member of a family of Thrifts, many of whom reside in British Columbia, Canada, has tested. He traces his family back to Yately, Hampshire, England; the immigrant family migrated to Canada in 1874, when records were well-documented. See
http://www.surreyhistory.ca/htthrift.html
Thus this is the first Thrift we have tested who can point to a clear specific origin in the British Isles.

My suspicion is that this family MAY descend from the Thrifts of Kent. Yately (west-southwest of London) is 65 miles by road to Tonbridge, Kent, a region with a history of Thrifts back to the 1500s, see
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thrift/266/mb.ashx
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thrift/191.2/mb.ashx
http://family-tree-russell.co.uk/A135.htm and
http://boards.rootsweb.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=265&amp...

Clearly we need to test Thrifts from Kent (as well as elsewhere).

This family is an EXTREMELY close DNA match to the Thrifts of the Northern Neck of Virginia, USA, who descend from Nathaniel Frith. See a comparison of DNA markers here
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-fam_grp
There is no doubt that these families are closely related. This suggests that before the Thrifts of northern VA were called Frith, they were likely called Thrift (or else the surname changed independently in both branches of the family); it is also very possible that the name did NOT really change, but that the issue is just one of poor literacy or inconsistent spelling and pronunciation. Currently in southern England "th" is often pronounced as "f"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th-fronting

In separate news, a descendant of Absolom Thrift of MD, USA
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
has received DNA test results. Because Absolom (born ~1775) was so close to Old Rappahannock Co, VA, married to an Offatt, and also because the given name Absolom runs in the line of Charles Thrift, it was assumed that this Absolom was closely related to the Northern Neck Thrifts and likely a descendant of Charles. It has now been proven that Absolom was closely related to Nathaniel Frith and descendants, including Charles.

FTDNA has finally received the test kit from a descendant of an English family originally surnamed Evilthrift. I expect results in two months or sooner.

Several people from the UK and US of surname Firth or Furth tested independently and joined the project. Incredibly, it turns out that all are closely related, and the common origin seems to be Yorkshire, UK.
http://bit.ly/TFFDNA-firth_fam_grp

I have obtained maps of the distribution of the Thrift, Frith and Firth surnames in Great Britain in the early 1800s. Data is here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
maps are here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
Almost all Firths (84%) were in Yorkshire. Friths were also centered in Yorkshire, but had a very much broader distribution. Thrifts were also broadly distributed, but in contrast to Friths and Firths, Thrifts had their highest densities in Kent and Middlesex (London). Firths had a separate enclave in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Thrifts also had a separate enclave in Scotland, primarily in Perthshire and nearby counties. Thus there are, at a very minimum, two origins each for Firths and Thrifts. We need to test these people!

Richard Thrift

A separate document lists John Thrift and his son Richard, fined in the Manor of Wakefield on October 21, 1350, for failing to come to court for the election of the grave.

I suppose that John may be son of William Thrift, which would suggest William was likely born before 1294 or so (if Richard was at least 16 in 1350).

http://www.mallproj-home.co.uk/CourtRolls/Wake1350.pdf
see page 3 of the pdf
"John Thrift 2d, Robert Jakson 1d, Richard Hanson 2d and William Beweshire 1d are amerced because they did not come to the court. Richard son of John 1d, Stephen Burnell 1d, John Walker 2d and John Judson Elyot 1d are amerced likewise."

According to the 1838 edition of "A dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon language" by Joseph Bosworth, a gerefe (grave? akin to German graf) may refer to a reeve or bailiff, a type of judge; see the article on p. 145 in Google Books.

Richard Thrift
Hello Richard,
To sum up what info i have:
Harriet REdfern married John Thrift in Scotland; sons George Dodd b Nov 1855, John b Jan 1857, both in Dirleton per 1861 census. John Thrift (Sr) died Oct 1857 in Edinburgh (SR 1857 Deaths Parish of Colinton, County of Edinburgh, p12.). Harriet than married widower James Harcombe (Aug 1858, Galashiels, Selkirk). James childred from his previous marrieage were (John) James, Ann & William; with Harriet, children Caroline, Tom, Harriet, Henry, Frederick, Mary Ann, Sarah & Edgar. William & John James both emigrated to America, followed by John & George (Thrift). John settled in Rock Springs Wyoming about the time that William Harcombe left there to settle in Utah. George Dodd (Thrift) also became a US citizen, traveled back & forth between Scotland & America, died in Edinburgh Sep 1915 (while on a visit??). He is buried in Tomnahurich cemetery, Inverness, in the Harcombe family lair along with his mother, stepfather, stepbrother Edgar & Edgar's wife. If you go to the Find_a_Grave website (www.findagrave.com) and do a search for James Harcombe, with country Scotland, you will find James' information, including a link to Harriet, and from her, links to George & John (Jr).

Have no knowledge of a GROSS family, or of Watson Thrift, or of any Thrift family in Illinois.

If you would care for a GED file with this info, will send it along later -- will be busy tomorrow & Sunday.

Ken Thompson
near the confluence of the Illinois, Missouri & Mississippi rivers.

P.S. My wife is a descendant of James Harcombe.

kthompson, I tried to email you but it bounced.

You posted related info here
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thrift/132/mb.ashx

Here's a summary of relationships I have found, (unfortunately without showing notes & sources):
Watson Thrift -how does he fit in?
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
John Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
George Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I'm not sure we are talking about the same George, but it seems likely. George's death certif stated his mother was Hannah, not Harriet, and various documents stated his father was born in England, not Scotland. All those discrepancies are understandable, but can you show clearly that these are the kids of John & Harriet of Dirleton?

How are they related to William Harcombe, and the Gross family?

If we are talking about the same George Thrift (born in Scotland ~November 1857) then his documented transport in 1884 was not his first, since he married in 1882. But there is a gap between known children (1883 & 1886) so it could be.

I'd appreciate any info you can provide, for both ancestors and descendants. Do you know of others researching these families?

Thanks!
Richard Thrift

WHO was Elizabeth Parsons Thrift in Virginia, USA ~1736?

There is a persistent rumor that Elizabeth Parsons was wife of one of the Nathaniel Thrifts. What evidence is there for this? Perhaps she married one of the Thrifts from Maryland, or Dinwiddie County instead?

By searching google books for Wills and administrations of Elizabeth City County, Virginia, 1688-1800 by Blanche Adams Chapman, then searching within the book for Thrift, one can find this will on page 75:
ROBINSON, ANNE. Widow. Leg.- son John Parsons; grandson John, son of John Parsons; granddaughter Mary, daughter of John Parsons; son William Parsons; daughter Elizabeth Thrift; daughter Ann Moore; grandson John, son of Samuel Hawkins; Grandson Samuel, son of Samuel Hawkins; grandson William, son of William Parsons; granddaughter Ann Moore. Exs. sons John and William Parsons. D. July 23, 1736. R. November 19, 1741. Wit. Henry Wilson, John Moore, William Smelt. Book 1737-49, p. 108.

A snippet view of a different book, "Genealogy of the Dodson (Dotson), Lucas, Pyles, Rochester, and allied family..." By Silas Emmett Lucas, has a different abstract from Anne's will, which lists Elizabeth Thrift as "loving daughter" and implies she was left 26 shillings.

Ann ap Thomas married first John Parsons, then after he died in 1717 she married Anthony Robinson. See the entry for her father William ap Thomas on page 93 of "Wills and administrations of Elizabeth City County, Virginia, 1688-1800"; he named his daughter Anne ap Thomas executrix, and so she was apparently not yet married when William died in 1677. If this is correct then her children, including Elizabeth Parsons, were probably born after ~1677.

There is an entry for the children of John Parsons and Anne ap Thomas (without documentation, and may have incorrect info) here:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Anne married Anthony Robinson after John Parsons died:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Which Thrift did Elizabeth Parsons marry? What other documentation is there for this?
