Does any one have information on Talbert R. Thurman, buried in the Ontario Cemetery, Story County, Iowa. He was born in Virginia on October 5, 1794 and died in Story County, Iowa on January 26, 1867. In 1887 the GAR listed him as a veteran of the War of 1812. The General Society of the War of 1812 can't recognize his service without proper documentation. If anyone can provide Regiment, rank or such, it would be appreciated.

I misspoke. Frank's papers have been given to the Augusta, GA Genealogy Society and are awaiting being curated so probably not available for public use yet. I don't know that for sure so it may be worth checking into.

Actually, he was married to Miranda's sister, Catherine, first. Then married Miranda. William Perry went by the name of Thurman. as far as i know, he was a thurman.

Mary Thurman, died 1923 in Cohoes or Troy, New York

I'm looking for information on Mary Thurmanwho lived in either Cohoes, Albany, or Troy, New York. She was likely born between 1855-1865 and died in 1923. She had a child, Harry John Battle/Bartle, with a man named John F Battle but I don't believe they married. Harry Battle/Bartle was my great-grandfather. He spent some portion of his childhood in St Colman's Home for children in Cohoes. Harry Bartle's daughter remembered that his mother died in 1923 and that his father, John Battle, was still alive after Harry Bartle died in 1925. Any information would be very helpful.

Not sure it is a connection, but I had a Greatgrand father that was also named Louis Benjamine Thurman. We know very little about his family. I have a great aunt that is still living and getting few details from her. Gould be a connection.

My family, as I'm sure lots of others had, a certain penchant for using a Mothers maiden name as a middle name for their children.
My Great Great Grandfather was called John Thurman Ledgard, my Great grandmother was called Amelia Thurman Ledgard and her brother called his son William Thurman Ledgard.

Hi, My grandfather was Grover Cleveland Thurman and his last known residence was in Danville, VA. He was married to Mary Susie Cassady (B1886-D1970) and they proceded to have over 10 children (some still living). Mary was buried in Danville, Va. in the family plot there. Several of her children including my father Garnett James are buried beside her. Anyone with information on their children or their paternal lineage please let me know. Also I have posted at facebook a Thurman family picture of some of Grover relatives to Thurman Surname page and requested that anyone who recognizes these Thurmans to contact me. It is a long while since you posted your message. Have you made some progress? What are the names of your grand and great grandparents? My Thurmans were centred in Nottinghamshire but many moved on to several other counties in England.

Thankyou so much. The Thurman and York family is so hard to figure out. I Also have nothing on the Yorks other then Amy Simes mother was Levina Sarah York and father was George Simes from Ohio. I thought Richard York and Sarah York were Sarah Yorks parents but when I search both their names both of their parents come back with the last name York. I am not sure if they were cousins or what. No madden name for Sarah York. Man my family is confusing. I have been working on this for my grandma.

I'm glad you posted your question here because it gives me a chance to show how the DNA project helps us with the kind of search you're doing.
Knowing that James C. Thurman, Hazel's dad, was born in OH peaked my attention because the Thurman DNA project has descendants of 3 completely unrelated OH Thurman families.
If you look in the 1925 Iowa State Census on the second page of the listing for James are some big clues for you. James' parents are listed as Joel Thurman and Rachel Burge of OH. If you look in 1850 Hardin County OH you can find Joel listed with his father George b. VA and mother Margaret and with wife Rachel in 1860. Amy is found in 1880 with her York grandparents.
Now, the big question for me is WHICH George was Joel's father as there are several George Thurmans and many errors on the internet "family trees".
Testing the Y-DNA of a man with the Thurman surname shown to be descended from this George and Margaret of Hardin OH) would clearly tell us which Thurman family of James - father Joel- and grandfather George - is YOURS!

I don't know about the J.W. Thurman from Barry Co., but the second one mentioned here would be my grandfather on my dad's side (Homer Alexander Thurman). Unfortunately, my dad died when I was very little so I know almost nothing about this side of my family. I'm sure that isn't really of much help, but I thought I'd mention it anyhow. :) I'd love to know anything you might have on the Thurman/Robertson ancestry. Good luck in your searching!

I'm researching my Great Grandmother Sarah Crosby Fortner's Maternal Family. What I've recently found is that Sarah's Mother was Emily Holt, Daughter of Elizabeth Thurman Magness Holt. It appears that Elizabeth Married a Mr. Holt after David Magness and Emily is the only child from that Marriage. Any feedback will be appreciated.

As soon as I can format a list of "Most Distant Documented Ancestors" for each of our Thurman DNA participants it will be available on the FTDNA Thurman page in the "results" section:

But even once you look at the list I have to say that our DNA project is a dynamic collaboration from Thurman/mon/d researchers everywhere so I expect and look forward to contributions and comments from anyone who is interested. If someone has a specific family they are studying I can alert you to whether we have a DNA sample from that line.

In your husband's family's case we do have a descendant of Philip and Keziah through through their son Stephen Thurman - James - Eli. This is kit #33039. You can see that this family is part of a very large group of Thurmans but we have not definitively connected all of them with paper trails! So...as I said, it's an ongoing project!
