Hi Graham!

I am also looking for a Samuel Thurston married to a Mary Anna Mitchell. I cannot find his birthdate, parents, etc. All I know is that in 1882 he was at least 21 years old. This was in Missouri. Could your Samuel have moved to the states?

I have prepared a tentative genealogy of many of the Thurstons of Northumberland County who are descended from Moses Thurston and Cartherine Bottenheimer. They settled in Northumberland County between 1810 and 1820. The report is in PDF format and I will be happy to e-mail a copy to any interested researchers. Please contact me directly by e-mail if you are interested.

John Thurston, Pittsylvania Co., VA, b. 1740

I'm hoping some of you experienced Thurston researchers can help me with a major brick wall. I am a descendant of John Thurston through his daughter, Martisha Thurston, who married Garland Hurt, son of Moses Hurt and Elizabeth Shelton. John Thurston was a witness to his daughter's marriage in 1789 in Pittsylvania County, VA. He also appears there on the 1782 tax list. I believe he may have served in the Revolutionary War. Beyond these few basic facts, I have nothing on John Thurston. I know there were many men named John Thurston in VA at about the same time and that Thurstons were located in Goochland and Middlesex Counties, but I've not been able to connect my John to either of these lines. I've seen online postings showing him as the son of Duel Thurston and Judith Moseley, but I can't find any evidence for this connection, either.
My branch of the family migrated to Russell County, VA and then to Pike County, KY. I would appreciate any help anyone can give on identifying this John Thurston, his wife, and family. Thanks

Jonas Thurston commits suicide - 1900

Article from The Weekly Examiner, San Francisco, Thursday, 27 December 1900

HIS LOVE DROVE HIM TO SUICIDE

Anaheim December 22 - Jonas Thurston placed a 32-caliber revolver to his right temple this afternoon and fired because his sweetheart told him last night that she did not want to see him again. Some one had told that Thurston was following other woman.

The young man will probably die. The bullet ranged downward, coming out of his left cheek and entering the floor of the room in which he fired the shot

When his father and brother ran in he was conscious and said he was sorry that he had failed to kill himself instantly, The family is of prominence. Young Thurston has always borne in excellent reputation.

William Ward was born Bunwell about 1817 - he was baptised at Bunwell Church and married there in 1837 to Mary Ann Potter who was about 17. William's parents were listed as Sarah Ward and William Hilling on his marriage cert so assume they never married.
Mary Ann's parents as William Ward and Mary - he was a Weaver.
I cannot find any good information on either sets of parents, there is a Wm. Potter but dates do not work out unless he had two wives named Mary but no info on that either. Any information would be appreciated.

I also went to the courthouse a few years ago and got copies of the deeds. I also discovered there are still maps available which show the location of the Burk properties.

The Jan 1819 date of sale confirms that Thomas Burk and family uprooted at that time. We know he moved to New York. He appears in the 1820 census in Middleburg, Schoharie County, NY. He apparently died shortly after moving there.

I suspect Thomas Burk previously lived in NY, during the American Revolution, and had some ties to the Albany area but can't yet prove it. His move back to NY may have been "returning home" so to speak.

I have driven to the Grafton Co. Courthouse in North Haverhill NH and purchased most of Thomas Burk's deeds. I have typed all to make it easier reading. I am determined to find the location of his home on/near Pinnacle Hill Road. One of last deeds states that on January 27 1819
Thomas and Eleamor Burk sold all their land to a Isaac Balch Jr.for the sum of six hundred dollars.
The first sentence reads "Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Burk of Lime in the County of Grafton and State of New Hampshire". This would confirm that the family was still in Lime in 1819

Re: Thurston name - character in my novel

I have recently published a book, Mantis and the Mole ( www.falconclinic.com) , in which Carl Thurston is one of two main characters. It is an adventure, mystery, romance novel. The other main character is Sam Petrie. I am writing a second novel, using Carl Thurston again as a main character. I need to know where in England ( or Ireland? or Scotland?) the original name and family comes from. My second book is entitled "Reunion" and Carl , and others, come to grips with their past as well as their present and future.
Also , any interesting, historical involvements by the Thurston clan that might be of use in my second novel? Any help would be appreciated.

My father is Charles Thurston - died 1988 in Dumfries/Quantico, VA area. I have found alot of information dating back for his family - mostly his father's side but not much on his mother's side. My Thurston family history dates back to England - coming to Norfolk and Goochland, Va area.
