Tildens in Iowa... a knot of confusion, LOL. here is a pic i came across of the Julius C Tildens.... i might have got it from here....

Tilden families on Christmas day, 1891. Included are the family progenitor Julius C. Tilden who moved to Ames from Rochester, Vermont following the Civil War; his two sons George G. and Fred C., their wives and children; his three daughters, Susan, Julia, and Abbie, their husbands and children. Galen (son of George and Lydia; 6) Fred (son of Julius); 7) Goerge Goodnow (son of Susan and Omri Goodnow); middle row: 1) Minta (daughter of Fred and Emma); 2) Mary (daughter of George and Lydia); 3) Julius Clark (son of Fred and Emma); 4) Agnes (daughter of Fred and Emma); 5) Emma (wife of Fred); 6) Susan Goodnow (daughter of Julius); 7) Omri Goodnow (husband of Susan); 8) Julia McClain (daughter of Julius); 9) Howard McClain (husband of Julia); front row (seated or crouched): 1) Lydia (wife of George G.); 2) George G. (son of Julius); 3) Winifred (daughter of George and Lydia); 4) Buell (son of Fred and Emma); 5) Julius; 6) George H.
Lilly is the daughter of John Edward. b: 03/05/1866, Portland Oregon.Baptised 05/12/1867 – Sponsors: Patrick McArthy and Susan Gill Dennison (Whitwell)d: abt 1920, the son of Thomas Tilden and Mary Gill. Mary died in childbirth in 1872 after which Thomas was absent except for the occasional visit with money. My grandmother Pearl is an older sister to John.

He shows up in the 1890 Portland Directory as a laborer living in the Albina area. By 1910 he is in Sacramento, a plumber for Siller Bros., living at 1706 N St., and married to Annie M. who was born in California of parents from Kentucky. Census information shows that they had a daughter Lilly May, born15 October 1890, and a son Eddie C born 1892. It appears that Lilly was a secretary all of her life in Sacramento and died February, 1985, in Woodland. I loose any record of Eddie after a 1920 Census listing for him as a lodger and railroad laborer in Oakland.

The Tilden in San Francisco at the turn of the century would have been Capt JB Tilden, Lilly's GGGrandfather.More on the family tree if you want.

The proof of Mary's parentage would be in her father's probate file, which, I believe, would have been docket #4189 in the New London probate district. Apparently the estate was divided and receipts received before Lebanon moved to the Windham probate district in the fall of 1719 (and it is a receipt from Stephen Tilden on the account of Mary which constitutes the proof, naming her as Rowland's second daughter). Someone with more experience with CT probate than I have might be able to elucidate the matter.

Dale H.
The names of the 12 children of Stephen Tilden and Hannah Litle are listed in the "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations" silver book on Richard Warren (Vol. 18, Part 1, 3rd Edition). They are: Hannah, Stephen, Abigail, Mary, Judith, Joseph, Mercy, Ruth, Isaac, Ephraim, Ebenezer, and David.

I do cite page 20 on my family tree for all of the birth dates of the children who were all born in Scituate, MA, but I see that I also cited page 20 for the birth date of Stephen, the father. I should change the page to page 21 for the children's names and birth dates.

Dale, you are absolutely correct, the date (11 Oct. 1629) is the baptismal date for Stephen, the father of the 12 children. I must have entered that after my application was approved, otherwise, the GSMD would have questioned and corrected it for me. I might have thought that "bp" meant "birthplace" instead of "baptimal."

As far as the middle name is concerned, none of us can use a middle name or initial, even if it has been passed down through our families unless a legal document is found with that middle name or initial. Neither of my mother's parents were even given a middle name, and they were born at the end of the 1800s. Most of their syblings had middles, but no one has ever been able to figure out why!

Thank you, Dale, for being right there for all of us!

Lois
> I have no wife nor children for Sephen, Jr.

From what I can find Stephen Jr. married about 1689 Mary, daughter of Rowland and Isabell (___) Powell of Gloucester, born 07-May-1660 Gloucester [Gloucester VR 1:559], died between 08-May-1725 (Stephen's will) and 28-Jul-1728 (division of his estate). Stephen, Mary, their four children born at Scituate [Scituate VR 1:357-360] and Mary's parents all removed to Lebanon, CT in the early 1700s - Stephen purchased land there in 1704, and Rowland's estate was being settled there in 1719 wherein Stephen and Mary were named. Stephen died in Lebanon 03-Oct-1727, and although Mary was named in his will, the division of his estate does not provide for her.

Dale H.
Roger,

The reason that your Telden Query caught my eye is that the Tilden Mailing List has been so inactive, lately. I went online and found the 3-4 trees that are connected to your tree through the Dearborn name, and I saw no Tildens in any of the trees. I got curious when I noticed that Richard Dearborn is from Michigan just as I am. Then, I looked at your Query again and realized that the Tilden name is through your wife's family name, Layne. I have no Laynes on my tree though.

I have a lot of Tildens on my tree, but I only have two Stephen Tildens, father and son. Stephen, Sr. and his wife, Hannah (Little), are one of my ancestral grandparents. I have no wife nor children for Sephen, Jr. Hannah's mother, Anna Warren, was the 2nd-born daughter of Mayflower passenger, Richard Warren. I have proved two Mayflower passengers, Stephen Hopkins and Richard Warren,

Here is my e-mail address so that I can give you the twelve children of Stephen Tilden and Hannah Little. The LITTLE name also connects to my family, but I have not found the link yet.

Lois (Griffes) Kortering

Joseph Tilden - Lancaster, PA

I am looking for information of a Joseph Tilden of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married my ancestor's sister possibly sometime between 1799-1801.

Susanna Shire/Scheir/Scheur/etc was listed in her parents' wills as the wife of Joshua or Joseph Tilden. I have found evidence of a Dr. Joseph Tilden having a practice in Lancaster County PA in the early 1800's.

The Lutheran church in Elizabethtown Pennsylvania has baptismal records of Julissus and Narcissa Tilden in 1801 and 1804, children of Joseph Tilden and Susanna Scheuer.

I cannot seem to find any census records or other documents in the Lancaster County area to match this family. Susannah's siblings remained in Lancaster, but I do not know what became of her and her family.

Does anyone have any information that might provide clues as to what became of this family? Any help at all would be appreciated.

Joseph Tilden (dates unknown)
Susannah Shire (various spellings) - born 4 Feb 1782 in Lacaster, PA
children:
Julissus - born 17 Jun 1801 in Lancaster, PA
Narcissa - born 29 Feb 1804 in Lancaster, PA

Thank you in advance for any help at all you could provide.

Sincerely,

Dan Shire
dashire@comcast.net

Your information on the Tilden family is wonderful.

I am the great granddaughter to Harriet Tilden. She married a Firehammener and then an Unger. My father's mother, Nell Unger, was one of Great Gran's daughters from the Unger marriage. My father is Kirkland Tilden Nelson.

Great Gran lived with Gramma Nell from the early 40's until she passed away at the age of 96. I lived with them for my first 14 years. Great Gran was a great storyteller. I grew up with a very rich history of the Tilden family.

Fred Firehammer, was a wealthy cattle rancher in Montana. There should be no problem finding Firehammer's in Montana.

Who is inquiring about Great Gran - Harriet Tilden?

Would love to share any information.

Thank you,
Marsha Nelson-Neilson

You wouldn't happen to be part of the Close family? The reason I ask is that a few years back as part of researching the Hoskins family I corresponded with a Janet Gibbens who had mentioned she had been in contact with Harry Hoskins family in Denver but had lost touch over the years. She had also mentioned that they had been stationed overseas so this seems more than a coincidence.

She might be a great source to recuperate some pictures of the Hoskins family. Email me at dbunge@yahoo.com and I will send you her contact info.

Sorry to hear about you misfortunes. I was in New Orleans a few months after Katrina and remember being shocked by the level of destruction. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been. Where exactly do you live?

Sincerely,

David Bunge

something happened to the Daniel Tilden Hoskins kids, I think the Parents' lesson to their kids was once you grew up, you were on your own; so leave home and go make it on your own. that was the message my dad gave me. My grandparents did not have a lot of contact with us, I only remember one visit with my grandparents together.

I know my granfather, Harry Hoskins, went into a car dealership, in think in Denver, made a lot of money, then lost it all. I know he invested in gold mines, again made a lot of money, then lost it all. So there was a lot of economic uncertainty in my dad's home. when these events occurred, I do not know, other than prior to WWII.

As a result of these losses, dad was always fearful, to an obcession, that hard times were always just around the corner, so much so that he would not buy a home after he got out of the Army in 1963.

I would appreciate anything you have on Leonard and would love to hear about your grandmother, Helen. I think there is a story there about Helen and her siblings. In later years, I got to know her sister, Frances, well. Visited her after I graduated from West Point in 1967. She had a picture of Leonard on her living room table. she spoke at length about him to me. The picture frame was very old, made of metal.

My dad knew of Leonard, he obviously was a subject of much Daniel Tilden Hoskins family conversation and reverance. My dad met the sergeant, who was with Leonard when he died. Told him everything that happened. Dad met him in either the early 60s or late 50s, while he was in the Army.

Dad was stationed in Germand from 1957-1960 or 61. I well remember going on a trip with him during that time through the area of France, where Leonard died. the area was still devastated, nothing growing, lots of mass graves. we did not visit Leonard's grave, Dad did not seem to know about it.

I wonder what it was like when Leonard, Harry and Douglas all signed up and joined the Army in WWI? I know nothing about the military service of Harry and Douglas. do you know anything about their military service? What happen to their brother Tilden Hoskins?

We lost almost everything we had during Hurricane Katrina. we are rebuilding our home and want to obtain and display picture of our ancestors, so the kids and grandkids know them, their great examples, and are inspired for their futures.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, this is the first time I have seen a picture of my great grandfather/grandmother so I really appreciate it. My grandmother wasn't very close to her family so I never really knew much about the Hoskins side of the family.

I have done a fair amount of research on the Hoskins family. I actually have visited Leonard's grave in France a few years back and have a sketching of his grave site with the DSC (Distiguised Service Cross) and French Croix de Guerre markings. I also have visited the bunker that was named in his honor in Galveston, TX (under the San Luis hotel).

As for Captian Daniel Tilden I have heard the rumors about him being depicted in the famous painting with Washington but have never been able to verify this. I have visited his gravesite in Hiram, OH. After the war he had purchased land in the Western Reserve (part of CT at the time) and founded a small town named Hiram. It's right off of interstate 80 so if you're ever in on Interstate 80 in OH I would recommend stopping to pay a visit.

Unfortunately since Helen wasn't very close to her family I don't have many pictures. The only one I think I have is one of her with her siblings circa 1902?. I do have some letters between my grandfather George Christion Bunge and either your grandfather or his brother Daniel, it may be both of them. I remember that one lived in Avoca, IA and the other somewhere in CO. Do you know the whole history with Helen and how she became detached from her family in Las Vegas? If not I can fill you in if you're interested.

Well, it's nice to meet you and I will keep my eyes open for any pictures of the Hoskins family.

David:

my grandfather was your grandmother's older brother, Harry Douglas Hoskins.

I found a picture of our grandfather, Daniel Tilden Hoskins, at http://econtent.unm.edu/ and there you will see a portrait of D. T. and two baby pictures of Harry, one with our great grandmother.

Are you aware of Helen's other brother, Leonard, and what happened to him in WWI?

Are you aware of Captain Daniel Tilden, another of our relatives, who lead a company of soldiers at the Battle of Trenton, one of which soldiers was Lt. James Madison? I undestand Daniel Tilden Hoskins got the name Daniel Tilden from Captain Daniel Tilden. I am looking for a portrait of Captain Tilden. I wonder if he is in the famous painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware, since James Madison has been identified as being in that picture on the boat with Washington?

We lost almost everything during Hurricane Katrina and we are looking for pictures of our relatives from the past.

Harry Hoskins
TILDEN, resident Physician of the State Insane Asylum, arrived in this city yesterday, after an absence of 4 months, during which time he has visited nearly all the Northern and Western States and Canadas, his object being principally a personal inspection of the various State Asylums for the Insane. Notwithstanding the brief period to which he was limited in so vast an undertaking he accomplished his purpose, and returns to give our State and humanity the benefit of his investigations. He regards the Insane Asylum of Iowa, as the model institution of its kind, surpassing in modern improvement, and in its appliances for the purposes for which it was intended, all of the older and more celebrated institutions of the East. Dr. TILDEN was warmly received by his numerous friends in this city.
There are no Nathaniels that I know of in my branch of Tildens though there are in the "other" branch from Tenterden.

You're right, we're bound to be related!

Duh!

I mentioned Benenden as one of the native villages of the Tilden family, but completely forgot to give the name of the town from which my Nathaniel came!

He was from Tenterden, Kent (not far from Benenden, Cranbrook, etc).

I still bet we're related!

Hi, do you have any idea whether your George Tilden is related to the family of the emigrant Nathaniel Tilden, who arrived in New England in the 17th century?

I am a descendant of Nathaniel thru his daughter Sarah, who married a George Sutton.

I know that my Tildens are from the Weald of Kent (which includes Cranbrook)--mine are from around Benenden and nearby villages. And I do think some were from Cranbrook, so it's very likely that our Tildens are related.

Meanwhile I'll check the info I have to see if a "George" shows up--I'm pretty sure my Tilden family includes a George but he would, I believe, have been born in either New England or more likely, NC--they got banished from New England to North Carolina after defending the Quakers' right to pacifism, of all things!! (New England Puritans believed in freedom of religion as long as it was their own particular religion, apparently! ;-) ).

I expect you know this already, but the Tilden/Tylden family is apparently one of the oldest families in Kent, England!! :-)

Tildens of Cranbrook

It's driving me crazy! I have a George TILDEN b. 10 Jan 1688/89 at Cranbrook, to a Samuel & Susannah TILDEN. Siblings were Mary (1678), Samuel (1683), Daniel (1684), John (1685), Susannah (1687), Sarah (1692), Mary (1693) & Henry (1695). George m. Elizabeth FULLAGAR ca 11 Mar 1713/14.

George's daughter Sarah TILDEN (1729) m. Stephen WILMSHURST, brewer of Cranbrook.

I've looked at many Tilden genealogies and though there are lots of Georges and Samuels, none have my dates. I thought he might've fit in with the Tildens that married the Casslens and Giles, but I can't find a definite link.

Does anyone have a George Tilden in their tree b. 10 Jan 1688/89?

Cheers
