Cela Tilghman of Worcester County, Maryand.

I'm looking to find any information about my Great-Great Grandma Mother Cela Tilghman. She was born April.1876 in Maryland, however there's no specific information stating what part of Maryland. After reviewing the 1900 Census, Cela lived in Pocomoke City, Worcester County, Maryland. The census also stated that at the time she was a widow & had 7 children, but only 5 were alive. The only information provided in the 1900 census were 2 children (Robert Henry Tilghman 1895-1939) & (George Washington Tilghman 1898-?)

Robert Tilghman is the father of my Grandmother (Blanche Tilghman 1931-2011) & my Great Aunt (Nina Tilghman 1933-1992) Both born & raised in Philadelphia, Pa. Im really trying my best to trace the Tilghman name. If anyone has any info please feel free to contact me, I would truly appreciate it..

Thanks :}

I am a Tilghman as well. I THINK my family originated on the Eastern Shore of MD. My branch relocated to Frederick County and Montgomery County. I went only as far back as 1853 for a William Tilghman. He married a Lillian M. That's all I have to go on. But the surname is not very popular with this spelling, I'm venturing to guess they're probably all inter-connected.

Trying to get some information on the above subject. She was born April 1876. Could her maiden name have been Taylor, born in Mecklenburgh VA? Lived with Steve (brother-n-law)and Drucila Holden at the above address with two of her seven children Robert H and George W. It is believed two sons Arthur Garfield Tilghman (Moses Beckett family) and John Wesely Tilghman (George W Mills family) were "adopted out" to these two families in Kyl Grange Worcester County Md when their father died in 1900's. Beckett and Mills may have been relatives of Cela. Submitted a request to the Worcester Library research room with this info but was told a reply would be long in coming. Also checking the VA birth records. Send any comments to Nikodemus2 on ancestry.com Thank you.

I am searching for the maiden name of three sisters, one of which is my great-grandmother, Sallie Francis. Sallie married Hardin Thomas Harmon. Her sisters, Ella and Cassie, married Williams and Tilghman men, respectively. I have all the info I need about their kids, but nothing about these women.

My closest finds have been that their maiden name is either Donehoo or Whitworth (Whitworth is family lore) or even something different. Anyway, They all met their husbands in Mississippi rather than in Arkansas, but all three settled in Arkansas.

If anyone knows this family, please respond here.

I have been gathering census and vital info on their children.

I have been trying to figure out Mary's family, and if it connects with a big line of Tilghmans through Maryland (Gideon) back to Kent in England. I'm sure Van Henry Tilghman is her dad, but not sure if Joseph Tilghman (1800-1874) and Mary Pauline Roundtree are V. Henry's parents.

Thanks,
Tom

Would like to share info.

Tom

My name is Rex Yance and I’m a Johannes Tilghman descendant. I’m interested in obtaining a GEDCOM file of the descendants of Johannes Tilghman (born ~1225) thru my 2nd great grandmother Elizabeth Tillman (1857 - 1925). She was the daughter of Jonathan Tillman (1826 – 1863) and Zilphy Westbrook. Elizabeth was married to John Wesley Williams (1849 – 1933). Also, I’m interested in obtaining a copy of Spes alit agricolam: (Hope sustains the farmer) which covers the years 1225 to 1961 of the Tilghman (Tillman) Family. If you know where I could obtain this information, please email me at ry103@centurytel.net or bryance@southernco.com.

William Henry's father was Joseph Edward Tilghman, b Abt. 10 Jan 1858 in Maryland and is thought to have died 10 Feb 1914 in Baltimore. Anyone with knowledge of this particular Tilghman branch?
Hi

There seems to be some discrepancey on many factors.
There is a letter going around that was from John Warren. Grandson of Tilman Warren.
I have a copy of this if you would like it.

Also at the end of the letter, he makes this statement:

There is one sister of grandfathers I had forgotten marryingHarris aand living in Tennessee. Her son, Uncle Charles said wasGovoner of Tennessee sometime in the sixties. ( Have copied exactly as the letter is worded)

I have researched out and found that the Governor in question was Isham Green Harris b. 10 Feb 1818. His parents were Isham Green Harris and Lucy Davidson Harris.

I can't see where his mother was orginally a Warren.
Maybe someone has more information on this.

I am willing to exchange what I do have.

Thanks for your response.
diana@nowell.co.uk

Hello; I hope this will help rather than hinder. My 4-great grandfather was Solomon Warren (b. abt 1750 - d. abt 1820)listed in Maryland and Ohio Census. He married Mary Tilghman abt. 1774. Their Son Tilghman Warren-(also in MD and OH)(b. 1777 - d. 1853), married Rhoda Stevens abt 1802. Tilghman and Rhoda's son was William Warren (b. 1805-d. aft 1860) who married 1) Margaret Blain(e) (1804-1848)in Pickaway Co. Ohio, in 1825; and 2) Mary ?. William and Margaret had seven children - Sarah, Tillman, Henry, Jonathan (my great-grandfather), Nancy Ellen, Rhoda, and Thomas. I realize you are asking about a Solomon and Mary out of NC - but how many Solomon Warren-Mary Tilghman marriages might there be? I would be happy to trade any information.
Have you seen the book by Stephen Tillman. It has a lot of very good information about a lot of different lines beginning way back in England. It is available online if you have heritage quest. Just type in Tillman and it will pop up and then look at the appendix for more info. You can also put in the name Elizabeth Tilghman at the books window and see what happens. Good luck. I have seen the name Tench in doing my own line. I am connected to William but I am sure they are related. Who knows you might be a cousin of mine. Have a nice day and let me know what you find. Thanks for contacting me. Peggy

I am trying to locate anyone who has the family of Tench Tilghman who was born on his father's plantation in Maryland Dec 25, 1744 and served as George Washington's secretary and aid-de-camp. He served without pay until May 1781 when he received a commission as Captain from Washington. At age 14 he went to live with his grandfather Tench Francis, Jr. in Philadelphia until just before the Rev. War. Washington rewarded him with the honor of carrying the Articles of Capitulation to the Continental Congress after Cornwallis. I am trying to connect Elizabeth Tilghman to him. I know he married his cousin, Anna Marie Tilghman and they had two daughters, Anna Margaretta and Elizabeth Tench Tilghman. The Elizabeth I have was born 1731. any help with any of these people would be really appreciated. Pat
George Tilghman of Delaware in 1893

Social and political discrimination against blacks seriously restricted any advancement. A famous U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1880 ruled that William Neal could not stand convicted of rape and murder because blacks were excluded from jury duty. As a result, Moses America, a black man, was summoned to jury duty in 1881, but blacks were not freely called thereafter. Blacks were also excluded from the practice of law. Black firemen and policemen were still not hired. In 1893, George Tilghman, a grocer, became a bailiff in the City Council.

I'm not related to this family, just passing on this information, which comes from a webpage called "Black Americans in Delaware" The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://www.udel.edu/BlackHistory/overview.html

Yes, I had John Tilghman & Eva Dryden as Catherine's parents. When I contacted the lady who had given her genealogy to the Church when she was very young. Years later learned it was wrong and cannot get it corrected on the Internet. George Loy m Catherine Tilghman; son Jacob Loy m. Phoebe Tilghman. These are the ancestors of Mrs. John Harless, Madison Co AL. I need to find the Tilghman book.

I am wondering what information you may have on Catherine Tillman. I have seen her mother to be Eva Dryden and Mary Elizabeth? .

I am also looking for the earliest time John Tillman shows up in North Carolina. So far, I see him show up in the 1779 tax list of ORange Co, NC, 1769 Dobbs CO, NC Tax List ( did he have a son named John?).

There is a John Tillmans in 1788 Voters list for Lenoir- Dobbs Co, NC. I also find a John Tillman in the 1820 Prueble County, Ohio with a Tobias Tillman ( brothers?). I also noticed there is a Tilman Cemetery. Any Tillmans burried there?

Catherine Tillman was born abt 1744 in Somerset county, Maryland. If her father was John Tillman, he would have left Maryland after her birth with Eva Dryden between 1744 and 1751( the year or so when Tobias was born). Orange County was not formed until 1752. I see others saying he was born in Orange county in the year 1751 when Orange County didn't even exist, according to www.usgenweb.com. Just click on North Carolina, click on the counties you want, go to Orange, and it will tell you the correct year Orange County was formed.

Becki Smith

Penelope married James Carithers in 1810 time frame, and Nancy who married William Thompson same time frame. They all lived in or around Madison Co., GA after their marriage. I believe that William and Mary lived in Burke Co., GA at one time. He is the son of George Tillman who married Judith Mason. They were from Prince George, VA. George was the son of George and Mary House and this George was the son of Roger and Susannah Hunt Parham (Parram) of VA. Any help. William was a patriot of the Rev. War.
Tench Tilghman-Brigadier General Maryland Militia Mexican War

Hello,
I am a document trader & collector & recently purchased a large collection of items related to Brigadier General Tench Tilghman during 1846-1847. General Tilghman was very active in organizing the Maryland Militia in preparation to participate in the Mexican War. The articles I have include published General's Orders he issued, a letter he wrote to the President, tons of correspondence regarding commissions, uniforms, arms, etc. - some signed by at least 2 future governors of Maryland, Tilghman's personal notes regarding the organization of the regiments & more. I am trying to determine exactly how this Tench is kin to the Revolutionary War Tench Tilghman. I am glad to offer additional information about or from the collection. I have a full list of the items it contains. Please e-mail me directly at softdsign@aol.com

Re: Christopher Tilghman/Tillman

I don't know whether you are still checking this post, but I am pursuing this question. The S.F.T. books have Christopher the emigrant has having sons Roger, Gideon , and John. I am descended from Gideon. Roger had Tillman's Fort in VA.
Elizabeth M. Tillman, the author of "Getting to the Roots of the Family Tree: The Story of a Saxon Family" 1997 Heritage Books, Bowie, MD, says she thinks the emigrant Christopher was the son or grandson of Nicholas of Faversham, Kent. The Samuuel you refer to would have been a cousin with a common grandfather back about 7 generations in one branch and 6 in the other, according to her chart in that book. Alan, if you read this, contact me.
