Marie, my name is Bill Tillman. Great grandson of Columbus F. Tillman and Mattie Blake Tillman. Mattie Blake and Columbus left lower Lancaster County around 1904-1905 and moved with my grandparents Daniel Lee Tillman and Lena Amos Tillman to Cheraw, S.C. Mattie lived in the home I currently reside in at the time of her death. She and Columbus are buried in Old St. David's cemetery Cheraw, S.C in our family plot. I am keenly interested in the Blake family and their home adjacent to the Tillman plantation near the river. Please be in touch. My email address is bill@dtillmaninc.com Thank you.

Henry and Lydia Johnston Tillman are the parents of William R Tillman who married Mariah Bolton. Henry and Lydia married in Morgan Co GA in 1823. The family moved to Cherokee Co by 1848 (Henry and William served as juror and witness in a court case)

I think the family was in Marion Co GA in 1840

There is no 1890 US Census. It burned in a Fire in Washington DC and what didn't was ordered destroyed by the Census Bureau after 1900. You will have to use the 1880 Census and then find Tax Rolls that might give his whereabouts, but won't list the children...Wills are also a good source if you can find them, and Deed Records might help.

Texas had a Poll Tax and Voter Registration Rolls too. Look for the alternate spelling, TILGHMAN, too.

Re: Dolly Tillman b. 1802 GA daughter of Aaron Tillman?

Hello, I can tell you that Henry Tillman found in Talbot and Marion Counties 1830/1840 left GA in the mid 1840's to settled in East Texas, Cherokee Co.

I have yet to place him with parents, but circumstantial evidence points to Richard Tillman and Pennie Mullins. This Henry married Lydia Johnston in Morgan Co GA 1823. A Lazareth Tillman married a Caroline Johnston in 1829 Talbot Co. Henry and Lydia were in Talbot Co in 1830. They named a daughter Caroline. That daughter named a son Lazarus. I think my Henry and Lazarus were brothers and Henry's Lydia and Lazarus's Caroline were sisters. Henry consistently listed NC as birthplace. Richard was in NC in 1800.

I don't find the name Dolly in the family of Henry, but she could be related. I looked at Aaron as a possible father for Henry, but he didn't fit as well as Richard and Pennie

Emma Faust Tillman ,age,114 ,
Emma Faust Tillman ,age,114 ,
In Connecticut, World’s Oldest Woman Dies at 114 .
EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Jan. 29 — To say Emma Faust Tillman lived a full life would be an epic understatement.

She was one of 23 children born to former slaves in North Carolina, and one of only 15 who lived to adulthood. She was the first black student to graduate from Glastonbury High School, just a few miles south of here, and voted in the first election in which women were allowed to do so. Discrimination prevented her finding a job as a secretary, so she began catering, eventually baking cakes for Katharine Hepburn’s father and Jackie Robinson.

Mrs. Tillman, who died Sunday, was known as the “mother” of the Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church in Hartford, where she sang in the choir for more than 70 years.
And last Wednesday she was declared the oldest person in the world, at 114 years, 63 days and counting.
Whether she ever knew she received the title is unclear. When the television news cameras crowded into the lobby of her nursing home here, Mrs. Tillman acknowledged them but was unable to speak, her head hanging down, a blank look on her face.
By the time they left, she was exhausted and returned to the bedroom she moved to in 2003, after decades of living independently. She went to sleep and never woke up again.
The title of “world’s oldest person” is now apparently passed to Yone Minagawa of Japan, who was born within weeks of Mrs. Tillman and turned 114 this month.
And though it is perhaps impolite to mention, recent history suggests that Ms. Minagawa may not hold the crown for long. In the last month alone, the title of oldest person has changed hands three times, according to the Gerontology Research Group, an authority on the matter.

For those who are known to be in that select circle, life as a very old person can become quite a public affair. Mrs. Tillman, for her part, did not shy away from the attention, happy to take in the birthday parties for her at the convalescent home.

On her 113th birthday in 2005, Mrs. Tillman received 113 long-stem red roses from a much younger man — Donald Pitkin, a member of the East Hartford Town Council, who at the time was 84. “My, my, what a lot of beautiful flowers,” those who were present recall her saying. “It makes a woman think she might want to get married again.”

Mrs. Tillman’s husband died in 1939, before the United States entered World War II. She outlived countless other relatives, including one of her two daughters. But of the four siblings who moved north with Mrs. Tillman at the turn of the 20th century, all lived past age 100.

There is no consensus on what allows certain people to live so long, but there is wide agreement that good genes are the best predictor of a long life. It probably helped, too, that Mrs. Tillman neither smoked nor drank.

She also did not drive. But with the exception of relying on others for rides, Mrs. Tillman lived quite independently. After first voting in 1920, she cast a ballot in every election until 2006. She attended church weekly until her 114th birthday, on Nov. 22.

That day, Mrs. Tillman was quite subdued, but she perked up when the choir sang two of her favorite songs, “In the Garden” and “Passing Through,” said John Stewart Jr., one of her great-nephews, who attended the service with her.
It was the last time Mrs. Tillman would leave her home, he said. He recalled her remarking on the milestone: “I’m 114. It’s enough now,” she said. “I’ll go whenever the man upstairs calls me home.”
Mrs. Tillman is survived by her 80-year-old daughter, Majorie. But the large extended family is something of a complicated clan: the funeral program will list 7 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-great-grandchildren.
“She was the glue that held us all together,” said Mr. Stewart, the family historian and a former chief of the Hartford Fire Department — the first African-American fire chief in New England. “She has served the good Lord, she has served the church, she has served us. What better legacy can she leave?”
Once it became clear on Friday that Mrs. Tillman was entering her final days, family members filed into her room. They quickly decided they would not attach her to a feeding tube or other machines, preferring to let her die in what doctors said would be a matter of days.

Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church in Hartford, "

His mother died when he was young and my great grandfather remarried to a woman by the last name of Banks, and he had through her a half or step brother we called Uncle Son. All my life I heard stories about Pulp Wood cultvation and sales. My grandfather was very tall and had a nose like a greek, his hair was shiny and curly and he worked for Union Oil in the early teens maybe 1915 or 16. My brothers are named John and Billy. My father is also deseased now so any info you may have will be appreciated

I beleive that John Tillman and Mary White were the parents of Elizabeth Tillman who married william cole Harriaon in 1798 in Virginia, who I think were the parents of Charles T. Harrison who married Elizabeth Hews in Georgia in 1824 and had a son named Ruebin Tillman Harrison my great grandfather. I am searching for proof that william Cole Harrison and Elizabeth Tillman were charles t.
Those of us doing research have dead ended with John Tillman in South Carolina in 1782. All indications are though, the family (originally spelled Tilghman)came from the UK in the mid 1600's.
Note: about 20 years age there was a wonderfull documentary shown on public TV, and it reruns occasionally, by Ken Burns on the civil war. It had a picture of a Tillman Mercantile in Vicksburg MS at or about the time of the civil war. I've never been able to connect that to my line, but it sounds as it might fit yours. I've seen a better pic than this link, but it may be of help
http://www.oldcourthouse.org/phototour.htm

Ernie
Can't find them in 1880 and after that time. They were still in Oakland, Susquehanna, PA in 1872 and maybe as late as 1878 as James was the administrator for his brother's estate. I have info. on the parents of Lovisa, but don't know much about the Tillmans.

Three Tillman brothers Arrived in U.S.A. in 1849. came to New Orleans from Arnsberg Stadt, Westfalen Prussia. They were sons of Joannes Henricus Tillman .

Why New Orleans as they were well financed? Could it be to visit relatives before settling down.

The three went to Vicksburg, Miss where eldest brother, William started up a business with livery stable, harness making and leather business. The other two decided the lure of the California Gold was the thing for them and off they went to the gold fields.

Francis Joseph make $5000.00 but got sick, almost died, used all of his money on getting well and came to San Francisco and founded the first Safe Manufacturing Company. He became a well documented pioneer as per "History of San Francisco Bay Region" by Bailey Millard History and biography Volume III, published by The American Historical Society, Inc. 1924. (Chicago - San Francisco - New York)

His brother, William in Vicksburg had a similar success story and you can view his business by logging onto http://www.oldcourthouse.org/APhotographicTour.htm.

I was just wondering if yiu knew if the Martin H. Tillman group is related?
I am looking for the parents of Dolly C. Tillman who was born abt 1802 in GA, lived in Sumter County for a while, and died abt 1870 in Lowndes County, GA.

She married James Simpson about 1825, had sons named George, James, Henry, Moses, Aaron, Moses and Peter, and one daughter named Sarah who married Thomas N. Bembry and was my ggg grandmother.

There is an Aaron Tilman found on early tax lists and censuses for Franklin county GA who might be her father or grandfather, and also a Henry Tilman who lived in Talbot and Marion counties who is a little too young to be her father, but might well be her brother.

Can anyone help me pin this down further? I know that the name probably started out as Tilghman, and that there has been a lot of research done on that family, but I need to make this connection before I can go any further back. Thanks.

They lived in Albany during the late 1700's, and had at least one son and several daughters, possibly including Elizabeth Trowbridge Tillman. I believe William may have been related to John Christopher Tillman (a son perhaps).

I am trying to locate info on parents of my great grandfather, Joe Cleveland Tillman (1882-1961). He was married in 1901 to Lue Perthesia Stone. His sister was Sallie Tillman Halcom (1877-1919). Lived in Arkansas. Father was most likely born in Arkansas and mother in Missouri.
