Ron,
While your note about the names in the Bible is now more than a year old, I wondered if this might be Abraham Tipton's Bible, which was donated to the Sullivan County Library? I purchased a copy, but was expecting the handwriting to have been clearer. Did you ever receive the list of names mentioned? I'm still searching for more information about John Green Tipton, and also his parents (Thomas and Amy/Ama) Burke Co, Ga and Dallas Co, AL.
I received a very helpful document from the Selma Library. The document was developed by Ennis and Ema Lee (La) focused on Hiram, another sone of Thomas and Amy/Ama.

In his book, "Tipton, The first Five Generations" Charles Tipton had a writeup on Jonathon, born in Jamaica. It discusses the date of birth. Do you have that book?

Jim Hale

In my opinion, it's not credible to "stick" on any idea until proven, and nothing you've mentioned proves he was born in the 1650's, but neither have I seen the documentation you've seen. I have no personal interest in this ancestor.

1) Kingston, if it wasn't called "Kingston" until 1692 proves nothing in favor of a 1650's birth date. Neither does it disprove a 1639 date. Both dates precede the founding of the city, according to common understanding of it's history, and is challenging for one date as the other. Many times boundaries change, for example, you could have an ancestor born in Virginia in 1850, but later he says he was born in West Virginia. Obviously, West Virginia didn't exist until after the Civil War, so that ancestor couldn't have been born "literally" in West Virginia. He was born in what is West Virginia today!

2) Until a more credible birth information is found, your still in the dark about when he was born.

3) You admit in his Maryland records his age varied from record to record. Sometimes this occurred due to social, business, or legal reasons. As for social reasons, often if a man was married to a younger woman, he would reduce his age to be closer to her own, and she would raise her's to be closer to his. The truth about how old he really is comes out at his death from family members who know the truth for he had no reason to lie to them. This information is then confirmed in baptism records or other birth records. This isn't speculation, this is fact; I've found this in cases of research I've done.

4) We still have the speculation of where he was born. Was it pre-Kingston "town" or plantation? Was he born in Great Britain and came with his father to newly conquered Jamaica? Was he born in English Jamaica?

5) When Britain conquered Catholic colonies in the 16 and 1700's, they would force the survivors to sign pledges of loyalty to the Crown (Acadia, i.e.). Also, there was a period of time.......sorry not up on exact dates...when the only marriages that were recognized were those ceremonially conducted by the Church of England. Perhaps Jonathan converted to the Church of England in Jamaica. He was young, British, and in a colony that demanded his loyalty.

6) You may have good reason to believe the accuracy of that birth date; I certainly don't know all the facts, and haven't done any research on it. I just know, for me, I'd want some hard evidence.

Good luck with your research!

The Newspaper article of January 1757 claims that Jonathan was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1639. The article has to be incorrect as Charles D. Tipton said because Kingston was not founded until 1692, 53 years after his claimed birth
(check history of Kingston and it will confirm this).
From what has been found about Jonathan's religion, he was not Catholic, he attended a Protestant Episcopal Church after he migrated to America.
The book author is not "stuck" on any parents for this Jonathan. He made it clear that there was no proof who his parents could have been and he would not speculate as to who it may have been. Charles said many times that it was all speculation when other people made claims about who Jonathan's parents were. They had no proof.
Charles also made it clear that other documents relating to Jonathan in Maryland showed his birth as being anywhere from 1649 to 1657 and even several years later. These were records that Jonathan was part of and not from someone after he died.
Jonathan's four known children were born from 1693 to 1702.
I will stick with the 1659 birth year because of the reasons I've mentioned above.

It's hard to chuck a piece of evidence like that. It would have to be strong evidence otherwise if it were my ancestor.

1) Where he was born could have been inaccurate as much as when he was born, i.e., Born in Great Britain 1739, raised in Kingston before age of majority.

2) On different occasions Catholics from Great Britain went to France and Spain for religious freedom reasons, and to get military support for causes against a protestant England. Could these Tipton's been Catholic 'refugees'?

3) If at all possible, I'd research 1738/1739 in Kingston before I'd eliminate it from reason.

4) Is the author of said book 'stuck' on a certain set of parents? Is it possible that his parents were another set?
I did notice, if these parents are the same I saw elsewhere, that a 1739 birth would have put his father at @ 21 years of age.

According to the late Charles D. Tipton's book "TIPTON the First Five American Generations" this Jonathan Tipton was more than likely born around 1659 in Jamaica rather than in 1639 since he was of British descent and Jamaica was under Spanish rule until 1655 when the British conquered the island and took it from Spain. Up until 1650 it was illegal for the English to settle on Jamaica so his parents could not have been living there. Charles Tipton was of the opinion that the 1639 date was a mistake in the transcription of the obituary and that the mistake in the age came about because of that calculation.
I have found over the years that the attention that Charles paid to his research and the accuracy of his records were enough proof to me that what he said was usually accutate.
I tend to believe that This Jonathan was born ca. 1659.
Dale Laws

On top of that, reporters have been known to make mistakes. This one, however, doesn't get my "suspicion" meter going. It looks right, at least from a reporting point of view, and seems unlikely that a celebrated and notable age would be inaccurate. As a researcher, I would assume it's true from a searchers point of view unless proven wrong. As a documentor, I would assume it's inconclusive until corroborated with other material. Make sense?

After posting the above in confidence, I looked once again at the obit, and forgot that it could have been a transcription from an earlier news article (published March 10, the title of the section is "January 27...Earlier this month....blah, blah, blah..."

Is the info accurate? It seems credible to me, but I wouldn't stand on it alone; I'd want to find Kingston records from 1738/1739.

I have noticed that Tipton researchers continue to write in about the "We Tipton's and Our Kin" book because of the old posts by the so-called "Erickson" person in Arizona who obviously has been dishonest in dealing with people who wanted to buy a copy of the Tipton book. I say "so-called
Erickson" because that may not really be her name.
PLEASE DON'T SEND ANY MONEY TO THE ERICKSON WOMAN BECAUSE YOU WON'T GET A BOOK OR YOUR MONEY BACK EITHER!!

The lady that had the Tipton books re-printed in 1998 (she lived in Montana at the time) told me when I talked to her that the family members that held the copyright lived in California and allowed her to re-print only a limited number
of the books. I also think she may have printed the family a few copies for the right to be able to print the books.
Anyway, this lady in Montana apparently got a special deal on the cost of printing because she sold them at a really good price ($56.00) and the printer did a fabulous job on the books. I don't know how she was able to locate the part of the Tipton family that owned the copyright but I imagine it could have been Ervin Charles Tipton's children or grandchildren.
I don't know much about copyright laws but I think there is a time limit on them unless someone applies to have them extended. I have no idea what the time limit is.
I hope at some point in time that a honest person actually gets the right to have the book re-printed so researchers of the Tipton family can get copies of it.

Turns out my husbands great grandmother was Nancy Ellen Tipton, and Tipton was her maiden name, so it's a different person.

She was the daughter of Caswell C. Tipton and Millicent Lowery. We think she was married to someone with the last name Camp prior to her marriage to Jonathan Roach. She was Jonathan's 4th wife of five. Their daughter together was Lillie Mae Roach (who later married a McGee, then married Henry Pierce Garvin which is where my husband's line comes from).

Hi, My Grandfather is Aaron Jefferson Tipton who was married to Carrie Lula Jewell Tipton Davis. Your dates of their births & death vary from mine. Grandpa Tipton was born Aug 28, 1980 (1879 I am sure)& died January 21, 1925. Grandma Davis was born June 24, 1981 & died Sept 20, 1960. Not sure when they were married. My Grandma was called by many names: Lula Fairy Tipton, Lula Carrie Tipton, Lula Belle Tipton. I just noticed that her name could be mistaken for Annie on the 1910 Census but looking closely one can see it is Carrie L.

Do you have Cesley (Bryant) O'Brient Tipton as Hiram's father? His mother was Louiza Patrick. I haven't been able to find Cesley's parents. I know that he lived in Overton, Jackson and Clay County in TN. He is buried somewhere in Westmoreland TN. I have been trying to connect with other branches of the Tipton's but haven't been able to. If you can share with me any information on the Tiptons that I am looking for you can email me at p_young22@msn.com if you would prefer.
Kennedy is the middle name of Thomas Kennedy Tipton, I just saw it on a photograph I got from a far off cousin. Here's the pic... Hope it helps somewhat. They are all sons of George Washington Tipton, b.1860/1859 in Tennessee. I give the birth date because there are at least two people with the same name. Good luck!

I have some information and pictures of George Washington and his children and one of Cisley and Louiza. I can't find anything on Cesley (Bryant) I found that George's sister (Susan) was buried in New Hope Cemetery in Westmoreland TN through her death certificate. I visited the cemetery and couldn't find her at all. Cisley is supposed to be buried in Westmoreland, so I was also hoping to find his grave site too, but that didn't happen. Cisley is my brickwall that I can't break through. I would love to find a connection with our line and be able to trace back at least one or two generations. Hopefully that will happen..If you need any inforation on the side of Hiram A Tipton, let me know. He was my Great Great Great Grandfather...

I am hoping someone has additional information on my GGGrandfather Cesley Tipton. He was born in 1828 and died in 1898. He lived in Sumner County TN and is supposed to be buried in Westmoreland TN according to family records. I cannot find anything on him at all and have been searching for years. He married Louiza Patrick and one of their sons was Hiram Alphonzo Tipton, my GGgrandfather. Cisley lived in Jackson, Overton and Clay counties in TN. Any help in this search would be appreciated.
