Hi there we know a bit about the Tyrrell family. Our names are Sandra and Caroline (nee Pepper) and we now live in Perth, Western Australia. We are researching our family tree and John Tirrell (also spelt Tyrrell) born 1848 in Horbling is half brother to Philip born 1834 who was married to Harriet Bescoby. John Tyrrell was Emma Pepper's employer and when she was aged 15 he made her pregnant and she gave birth to an illegitimate son called Walter Ernest Pepper who was brought up in his grandmother's house. Walter Ernest is our paternal grandfather. We have had difficulty tracing the Tirrells because their name spellling changes and also note they emigrated. We have more info on the siblings of John and Philip if you would like to contact us. Look forward to hearing from you. Kindest regards Caroline and Sandra

I am so lost on the Tyrrell family and trying to get confirmation of great and great great grandparents. My grandmothers name is Nellie Tyrrell, not sure if that is just a nickname but I did find her in some census reports shown as Nellie born abt 1892. I cannot find confirmation of a father in the household, only the mother Mary/lizzie? I would love to be able to confirm her fathers name, maybe John? AND his parents. Apparently from Ireland?

In order to find which Tirel/Terrell group you belong to, the easiest way is to find a male in your family who carries the surname, since the Y-DNA is passed from father to son--you can find out more by contacting the DNA project administrator, addressed on the Family Tree DNA website that I cited...I do not know of a connection between Francis and my group, Adam Terril b. 1742 but that is what the DNA test could show. Some known American Terrell families were the Richmond Terrells in Virginia, the Roger Terrell line in Connecticut, a group that included William, Thomas, Francis Thurlow/Terrell in Massachusetts, Terrils in Southhampton Long Island NY, Terrils in New Jersey (and probably other groups I don't know of). How are they related? Some are descended from "Robert of Reading" Tyrell in Berkshire England, some from his siblings or others...ALL Terrells would certainly benefit from whatever can be learned about the various lines and how they are related. Isn't it great that we actually may learn more about the past...our ancestors might be amazed!

The Tirrell I think is ours is the son of Francis Reed Tirrell. He married Nancy Warren in 1841.
I'm really not 100% sure. Our Willam F. Tirrell left my great grandfather Arthur Cleveland Tirrell at the New England Home for Little Wanderers in September of 1887, Arthur was six years old. He was legally adopted by Charles and Esther Dickinson. If this is the correct William F. Tirrell he died in prison in Boston April 6, 1908. That is as far as I have been able to take this.
I am not a member of Ancestry (I don't like them for taking over genalogy websites, which were free!). So I can not access your files.
Thanks for the note and if you have further information I would love to hear from you at ldakm@msn.com

If you click on "y-results" at the top, you can see example of how specific they can be...
I would like to find a male who is descended from Adam TERRIL b. 1742. I am a direct descendant, but unfortunately a male would give more accurate results.

Benajah was descended (Samuel4, George3, Daniel2, Roger1 Terrill). You can find an interesting article on the paper trail for this on dor-terrill.net.

Hi Jason,
My Tirrell line moved out of MA before 1789 when his marriage was shown in PHila., PA. My family didn't even know he was born in MA. I did try, through the DAR(Daughters of the AMerican Revolution) applications to find a Tirrell but the one whose application I could get was dead and the chapter did not have any others under that Patriot. There are several Alexanders and Isaac Tirrells and they keep getting mixed up with my ancestor, George Terrell/Tirrell's brothers. I think I already told you my lineage. I guess we have brothers Gideon and William sons of William and Rebecca.
Smiles,
Molly in Alabama

William and Rebecca are my 9th Great Grandparents. I believe I have been diligent in my research, but of course much of it has been gathered through ancestry.com and is by no means 100% reliable. My last name is not Tirrell, and was lost when Hannah Tirrell married Ebenezer Fisk. The name lived on, however, because their sons name was Isaac Terrill Fiske (note the spelling difference).

Hello, There is a Terrell/Tirrell DNA project at familytreedna.com. My cousin just added his DNA, Oct 2007. We believe his line would be from the Tirrell's who at one time lived in Weymouth, MA in the middle 1700s. But there is no documentation currently. If anyone(male Tirrell from the Weymouth line)is interested in submitting their DNA please let me know. Its best to do more than the minumum markers. Thank you.

Hi Julia,
I've been away from the computer for a few weeks or I would've replied right away. I am a descendant of Walter Tirrell and Annie Blowfield through their son Fred. Fred came to America in 1914 and his descendants are having a reunion next month in Connecticut.
We have never found any other descendants of Walter's other children and would be thrilled to make contact.
I've been fascinated with the life Walter and Annie led, moving about the country building railroad tunnels. They also spent a good deal of time with his brother's family, Joseph George that you wrote to Sheila about. He also was a railway worker.
Please get in touch and let me know about your line. Sheila and I and another cousin, Jan have traced the Tirrells back to Pipewell where the line becomes hard to trace before 1751.

MaryLynn McCloskey

I posed this question to one of the Tyrrell mail lists about a year ago and had only about 3 positive replies. I would love to see the results of this since my Tirrells lived in a different area from most others I've found. Some branches aren't even sure where in England they originated. Even though I can't participate I'm sure we could dig up a male in the line somewhere.

Tirell Murder, 1860- Weymouth, Mass,

There is an interesting article in the April 1970 issure of Yankee magazine documenting the deaths of Mary Tirrell and her sister Betsy Frances Tirrell; the first documented case of strychnine poisoning. These were the daughters of Wilson Tirrell (DOB 2/15/1808).
Apparently Mary, who was engaged to George Canning Hersey, died mysteriously 1/2/1860. His wife had died about 18 months prior. he then started seeing the Tirrell's other daughter, Betsy Frances. On 5/3/1860, Betsy Frances went into convulsions and died; an autopsy showed her 3 months pregnant. After much investigation it was determined she had died by strychnine poison- the first case that was able to be documented- up until then it was not detectable.
The day of his execution on 8/8/2862, George Hershey signed a confession admitting to the murder of Betsy Frances Tirrell, but denied the murders o of his wife and Mary Tirrell (although Mary's body had been exhumed and showed signs of poisoning and his wife, Emeline had also died of convulsions).
George Hersey's brother William B. Hersey (1820-1898) was married to another Tirrell sister- Susan Tirrell.

My G-G-GPa, James Tirrell (Terrell,Tyrrell) probably left Ire. during the Great Famine and settled in N.J. He married Mary Ellen Dwoon of Bandon, County Cork. Their sons died young, and Mary Ellen died just before one of them died. A daughter, Mary Elizabeth, survived and married Amos Emmons. James was a railroad laborer. They attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Bordentown N. J. If anyone has any other information or corrections of this information I would appreciate hearing from them.
