You are my Dad's 6th cousin even though he was born the same year as your
mother.

I have often joked that Tobias' are much more adept at siring girls than boys which is why so many of our "Tobias" lines die out. I believe I am the last of the male "Tobias" going back to my ggg gf, Benjamin (Circleville,
OH).

If you will send me an email to wtobias at austin.rr.com, I will be happy to see if I can't help you get going.

Wick Tobias
(Austin, Texas)

Hi,
Looking for information on Elizabeth Tobias, once married to Milton Speicher, and later married to someone with the name Shaefer/Shafer. Elizabeth bore a son to Milton Speicher on June 16, 1882 (sons name is George Samual Speicher).

I have no clue when Elizabeth was born, only that she died after 1914. Her sons death certificate lists her as being born in PA.

Thanks,
Shirley

Re: Jacob R. Tobias b. 8-19-1836 in Ohio-need more information on his father

The Tobias lineages are really hosed back then in part because siblings tended to use the same names for their kids; however, I think your line is as follows:

Hans Jost Tobe 1718-1785 and Eliza 1722
George Tobias 1738-1790 and Catharina 1745-1814
William Michael Tobias 1773-1847 and Mary Magdalena Bucher 1783-1855
Michael Tobias 1804 and Mary 1800 (your Booher?)

A lot of the names you show for the 13 children are the same as those for William Michael. Few match up with son, Michael although Jacob's 1836 date fits better. They are also both in Miami, OH (Washington and Newberry) in 1860. On the other hand, William Michael and Mary Magdalena died in Perry, Montgomery, OH in 1847 and 1855 resp--so it's possible Jacob was a "later-in-life surprise" and a sibling of Michael.

I show Mary Magdalena Bucher as married to both William Michael and brother John Christian Tobias, so it's very possible that William Michael's actual wife was your similar sounding (Mary and/or Magdalena) Booher.

If you will email me at wtobias at austin.rr.com we can discuss the numerous discrepencies which exist in coming up with an answer.
Frances Tobias m. Frank Emerson abt 1885 PA

I'm looking for any information about my great-great grandmother, Frances Tobias (born March 1867 somewhere in PA) who married Frank Emerson. Frances may have died in 1914.

I have found in the 1870 Census a Frances Tobias living in Titusville, Crawford County, PA who was 3 years old. She is listed with Asa H. Tobias (age 65), Rosetta (age 25), Minnie (age 4), and Eugene (age 9/12).

The 1880 Census (Crawford County) has a Frances M. Tobias (age 13) living as a boarder in the home of Aron and Mary Gibbons.

I've found Asa in multiple census records (1850-1900), beginning in Steuben County, NY, and ending in Crawford County, PA (assuming it's the same Asa in each of these cases). One of Asa's children is Daniel (age 9 in 1850).

The 1880 Census for Steuben County has a Daniel Tobias (age 31) married to Rosetta (age 24). No children are listed. The ages don't match at all with Asa's son Daniel, or the Rosetta who was with Asa in 1870 (age there was 25), but I have found other discrepancies in the census records regarding age.

Does anyone know if Asa's son Daniel was married to Rosetta and they were the parents of Frances? Or maybe have other information that will lead me down another path? What I have here is not really adding up for me.

Anything you can tell me will be very much appreciated.

I have quite a bit of information down the line on this couple I'd be happy to share.

You can google for Haplogroup predictors--here's one http://www.hprg.com/hapest5/hapest5b/hapest5.htm. I guessed and then confirmed from your tree that your line came out of New York which I think is the largest grouping of Tobias' and may be Eastern European. As mentioned, mine came from Germany/Switzerland--Western Europe in origen. Your Haplogroup should help narrow that down Wick Tobias Austin, Texas

My Sorenson results weren't posted from my first submission so I've resubmitted. So far, you are the only Tobias I can find posted.

You and I don't match on 7 markers which means we have a 50-50 chance of having a common Tobias Ancestor in the last 1500 years. Our line descends from Hans Jost Tobe of Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany who emigrated to PA and whose ancestors headed west through OH, IN, and IL. Very few--none that I'm aware of--ended in MI.

Adina is a Jewish name that means sweet.
many jews escaped the Spanish Inquisition in 1492 by joining expeditions to the new world.
Sadly, the inquisition followed them there.

Public burnings of Jews took place in South and Central America. Mexico is home to many of the decendants too.
The majority of spanish jews were sephardic...
many of them had dark skin.

they only hid their religion from their own children when it became dangerous for the children themselves to know who they were. they did pass on many secrets to the women... who by Jewish law are the determinants of Jewish Identity.

Their hope was that their daughters would be able to keep the traditions enough, that their decendants would someday return to the faith of their grandparents.

I always get a kick out of it when folks say Tobias is this or that. My research over the last 30 years indicates that it is a patrymonic--a surname adapted from a father's first name. If you look on familysearch.org, you'll see that a Daniel Tobias born in the 1700's is the son of Tobias Davies in Wales. I've also seen it described as a Greek form of Tobey (how many of us have Toby as a nickname?).

My two cents is that it is an international name, defying boundaries. If you look at the U.S. Census Soundex records, you'll see that it is from every country, and probably someone from every religion.

Good luck in your search!

Phil Tobias

well all the information has been quite enlightening. I also carry the surname Tobias. however I was born in the caribbean Trindad and Tobago to be exact. Does anyone have any logistics into how the name may have reached the caribbean? i know i have a great great grandmother called Adina Tobias.

Bless

Peter Tobias's wife Lydia and daughter-in-law Maria in OH

I am an Imbody researcher and thought this might help Tobias researchers.

Peter Tobias married Lydia (Hostler/Hastler) Imbody on 31 Aug 1855 in Fairfield, OH. Lydia was the widow of Daniel Imbody who died in 1848.

I am guessing the Maria (born abt 1839) who married Peter Tobias on 17 Jan. 1856, in Pickaway Co., Ohio was Lydia's daughter Mariah as listed on the 1850 census, which would mean she married her step-father's son.

Just a hunch...

If anyone knows when or where Lydia died I would appreciate the information.

Bess
