I am Donna Tobias. John Orley Tobias was my husband's grandfather. My husband was named after his father and grandfather. Francis and Vietta were really nice people. I met them a couple times and we exchanged Christmas cards until Vietta moved. I am also having trouble getting any headway with my research, which I just started last week. I'll let you know if I find anything out. My husband thinks Elizabeth married again and her last name was Buck. She was a fun person to be around and she LOVED wrestling.

Sarah, thanks for the information. I am not sure where my side of the family exactly fits but in one of the things that I found, it appeared that Enos might have had 11 children so there are probably many of us out there.

I just started using Ancestry.com and so I have not had a chance to really dig too deep yet. I hope to find some time soon to sit down for a weekend and just get all of this sorted out. Glad to hear from you and if I find anything I will let you know. Have a gredat day.

Bonnie Brown

Hey we're related! Well we share 2 relatives, Enos and Simeon Tobias. My line is as follows:

Marsha Weisman(my mother)M- David Layman
Wilma Faye Tobias (my grandmother)M- Ira Weisman
Oliver Crawford Tobias (great grandfather 1917-1972)M- Amy Walker
Jerrett Ansel Tobias (GG grandther 1853-1912)M-Sarah E., M-Laura, M-Mattie Mae Miller
Enos Tobias jr. (1818-1894, born in Swansea, Wales)M-Ann Eliza Martin
Enos Tobias Sr. (1781-1857, born in Swansea, Wales)M-Rachel Morris
David Tobias ( born when ?, lived in Wales)M-Elizabth

So far that's all I have. I think your Simeon was a brother to Jerrett Ansel. I forgot to save some records doing the 14 free day trial, but I'm pretty sure they are brothers. I'll do some looking and see.
If you have any questions or info to share, let me know! So glad to hear from long lost relatives!

Sarah Layman

I still am not sure we are related because I have not heard of any of the names you listed. Of course, those could be brothers, etc.

I think this is the way my line goes:
Eula Jean Tobias McIntosh (my mother)
Leroy Roosevelt Tobias (my grandfather)
Seth Tobias (my great grandfather)
Simeon Tobias (great great grandfather)
Enos Tobias (great great great grandfather (born in Wales) He was on one of the boats that came through NY when he was a child.

The Tobias family that I found seemed to be around, Marion, Jennings but I am not sure if Jennings refers to Jennings St in Marion county or Jennings county. I know my mother was born in Brownstown.

If I found out any other information, I will let you know. I have printed a lot of things off as I find them but I do not have time right now to go through them.

I just got an assignment from my boss that I have to work on now but will let you know.

Bonnie Brown

Hello! Thank you so much for getting in touch. I would love to share information. Here's my line:

Vicki Tobias (me!)
Richard Larry Tobias (father)
Clifford Gerald Tobias (grandfather)
Harry Tobias (great grandfather)
Theopolis Tobias (great great grandfather)
David Tobias (b. 1812 Wales, great great grandfather)

My Tobiases were located mostly in southern Indiana, in Jennings and Scott Counties. My father, Richard Tobias was born and raised in Remington, Indiana.

I don't know very much about David Tobias' family. I seem to have hit a wall at this point. I would like to know more about David's family -- his parents and siblings -- if you are related to this line.

Feel free to email me directly: tobiasvl@yahoo.com. Thank you so much for getting in touch! Best regards,

Vicki Tobias

I just recently joined Ancestery.com but have found a lot of information about the Tobias family. My grandfather on my mother's side was a Tobias. I know somewhere in the line, they came from Wales. I have a lot of information about the Tobias line if you are interested. I am not sure if we are related or not but I thought I would reply anyway.

There's also our family name Tobiasz as well as Taubus. Tobias is often spelled much the same way from language group to language group as it is considered a biblical name so there's not a lot of variation. I believe that it is a patronymic type name--Somewhere along the way, a family member was named Tobias.

Im researching the tobias line in south Africa. I am stuck with LeFleur Tobias, died 1885. There seem to be no records of him. Is it possible he could have been an immigrant to SA?there are only records of his wife, Salomina Tobias.

Where or how can I find out if there were immigrants round about 1810-1830?
Jean-Pierre

Wow! Thank you for all the leads! Sorry this is all run together, but I have tried and tried and can't figure out how to get HTML code to put in paragraphs and links to work on Ancestry. Most frustrating as the system has not accepted the message for the last dozen times I have tried to send it.

Here is what I know about Michael TOBIAS:

His tombstone in St John the Baptist Cemetery (Mt Carmel, Northumberland County, PA, USA) reads Michael G. TABIS. Born July 31, 1862 Died Jan 9, 1908 Aged 46 yrs 6 m & 8 d Rest in peace.

He was a coal miner and lived in Mt. Carmel, PA.

From an Ancestry.com link (some years ago)
(http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=ha...; ti=0&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=40&fh=1&h=4320142&recoff=1+2&hovR=1 Hamburger Passagierlisten, 1850-1934 Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934)

Name: Michael TABAKA
Departure Date: 27 Feb 1881
Estimated birth year: abt 1857
Age Year: 24
Gender: männlich (Male)
Family: Household members
Residence: Zemplin, Ungarn (Hungary??)
Occupation: Arbeiter
Ship Name: Cimbria
Captain: Ludwig
Shipping Line: Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft
Ship Type: Dampfschiff
Accommodation: Zwischendeck
Ship Flag: Deutschland
Port of Departure: Hamburg
Port of Arrival: New York
Volume: 373-7 I, VIII A 1 Band 039 B,
Page: 155
Microfilm Roll Number: K_1725

The http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&... 1900 Census (Mt. Carmel) lists Michael TOBIAS as being born Nov, 1860 and emigrating in 1880; his wife, Julia, is listed born in Dec, 1873 and emigrating in 1879, so she must have come with family. She has no tombstone, nor do I have a death date for her. Julia is Julia Agnes (HAVORAK) TOBIAS from a marriage record for her oldest child, a daughter Pauline, in the church records of Our Lady of Mt Carmel RC Church.

On Nov 17, 1999, I obtained the naturalization records for Michael TOBIAS at the Prothonotary Office in Sunbury, PA (Vol 1 #2246). Michael TOBIAS applied for naturalization on Oct 2, 1886 in Sunbury, PA. On the Application he is listed as having been born in Austria, is 24 years old, Allegiance is to Francis Joseph Emperor of Austria, emigrated from Hamburg and arrived on these shores on March 31, 1881 and lives in Mt Carmel, PA. His signature is on the papers. Unfortunately the papers do not give more information as to what part of Austria, he came from. His age of 24 would put his birth year at about 1861-1862 which agrees poorly with his birth date of November, 1860 given on the 1900 census but would agree well with the July 31, 1862 date on the Michael G TABIS tombstone in St John the Baptist Cemetery. Mike received his naturalization citizenship on Aug 25 1894. Witnesses to the civil court proceeding were Louis John KANKSKI and August ZINSKI.

In the http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&... 1910 Census Mike has died. Julia A HAVORAK married Michael about 1888 (from 1900 Census Census 1900 PA Northumberland County, Mt Carmel Roll PA 1449 ED 141 Sheet 1 (Soundex Roll PA 519)) T-120.) She is widowed in 1910 and the youngest child (living) is 5. Eight children are living. Two have been born since 1900 (Edward and Stephen) and two more have died presumed as infants. This also puts the death of Mike between 1905 and 1910 since Stephen the youngest child is 5. The place of birth of Julia is given as Hungary and her language/heritage is Magyar. Mike, now dead, is differentiated as being also Hungarian, but a Slovak.
The two boarders (brothers?) Albert and Joseph HAVORAKO are not listed as family but as boarders in the 1900 Census. They would be about 14 and 12 in 1910 and are no longer listed with Julia and her children.

In the Recorder of Wills office, Northumberland County, Courthouse (T324 V9 p 535) an entry is found which reads as follows:

"Michael TOBIAS Deceased. Be it remembered, that on the twenty fourth day of December A.D. 1910 Letters of Administration, in due and common form of law, upon the estate of Michael Tobias late of Mount Carmel Borough Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, deceased, who died on the ninth day of January A.D. 1908, were granted to George J. MOLESKI who entered into bond with A. F. JOHN as sureties in the sum of One Hundred Dollars,($100.00) Julia TOBIAS, widow (faint but may read) "housing unowned". Witness my hand L E. V. NICELY, Register." This confirms and puts Mike's death as Jan 9, 1908.

I do not have any data on Michael G TOBIAS/TABIS/TABAKA in the old country at this point, nor do I know whom his parents might be, though hints may reside in the names of his children, Pauline, John, Ella, Michael, Peter, and William and which are yet to be searched.

Any more information, insights, or leads especially back to the old county would be and are much appreciated. Please help me to understand better, for example, the differences between the surnames TABAKA, TABIS, and TOBIAS as various records at various times use all three. After Michael's death the family used Tobias exclusively.

But from what I see from your post, and above, it would appear that my Michael G. is a TABIS (especially as it is literally engraved in stone on his tombstone.) If this be the case, then it puts an entirely different slant on searching in the old country. Do you agree?

Also, as far as I know, Julia was a HAVORAK/HAVORAKO, but since you don't get any hits for that surname, I suspect that this was mangled in the census and in other documents. Too bad that I have never found a marriage license record for Michael and Julia. Any suggestions as to what the real name might have been? Yavorek, maybe?

Walter Freeman

The origin of the Tobias name is Biblical. Not sure if Hwbrew or Aramaic. Most indications point to Aramaic. So you will see many nationalities with this surname, also a "first" name.
Thanks....RJTobias

Many Tobias' are jewish and it's often indicated that the root of the name is biblical/hebrew; however many of us--maybe half--have histories with no known Jewish connection. Many are Hispanic (Catholic), Eastern European as in your case, or mine derived from Tobe in Germany. They were Reformed, a form of Presbyterianism.

A starting point is where the emigrating Tobias' landed--many of the Jewish namesakes arrived in New York.

Wick Tobias
Austin, TX

I don't show any granddaughter of Hans Jost as Catherine. Son, George's wife was Catharina, so that might be a clue of a missing daughter.
I do have a Anthony Wayne Naftzinger marrying Lena M. Tobias of Jonestown. They were born in the early 1900's but might provide a clue. Her line goes up to George, then George Jr.
Is it possible you are looking at a Catherine who had previously been married to a Tobias? There are a bunch of Hans Jost's granddaughter-in-laws who were Catherine's although the closest I get to 1775 is Catherine Hahn Tobias who was born in 1778

Hi, Peter Tobias Crawford was my great, great grandfather ... You probably know more than I do about this side of the family. My great grandmother was Georgia Ellen who passed away after the birth of the youngest son George. I would love to know more about this side of the family. I am not sure but for the most part my grandmother was darker haired and eyed. Supposed to be some Indian somewhere but I have not been able to determine where. I am not sure exactly where the dark features come from. If Mary was a Tobias the darker features may have come from her side. My father and all of his siblings were dark hair and most were dark eyed; But, my father and one brother were blue eyed. Would love to know more. Thanks, Lisa

This is my line too. Anna (Tobias Kingery) Eshelman is my great-great-grandmother. I'm glad that other people are looking but disheartened that it doesn't seem that anyone else has gotten any farther. I wanted to reply to this thread so I would be alerted if anyone finds anything in the future.

Best of luck - John

I am searching for information on Joseph Tobias b. 3/28/1864 in Portugal. He and his brother, John Tobias, travelled from Portugal by ship to the United States and jumped ship in Long Beach. They ended up traveling to San Juan Capistrano and living with a Mexican family with the last name of Garcia. They both took the family's last name of Garcia from then and on into the rest of their lives.

I would appreciate any help with this. Can't find info on ships.

Thanks so much for any help you may have!!

Virtually none of the Pennsylvania Tobias Descendants of Hans Jost Tobe migrated south. They originally emigrated from Germany in the mid 1700's and were "Reformed", a branch of Calvinism or Presbyterianism. Many of the Tobias' who emigrated to New York were Jewish. If you can speculate as to the Crawford/Tobias religion, it might give you a clue as to her origin.

Thanks for the background on your line. This string is further demonstrating the ethnic breadth of Tobias' including Germany, Scotland, and Austria. Many mention that the name is biblical (Hebrew) in origin as "Tobiah" (and variants) but it would appear the explanation is more complex

Hi, Phil
Yes, the Ezra you found was 40 when he died in 1908. His father was my g gf's, (also Ezra) 2nd cousin.
Hans Jost Tobe was born in 1716 in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany and emigrated with his then 2 sons in 1741 to Berks, PA. Following generations moved to Pickaway, OH, with later generations moving to the Peoria, IL beginning with Ezra's father, James. My family home was in the Chicago area, and when we moved to Austin, TX in 1984, I became virtually the sole exception to the many hundreds of Tobias' I've documented who remained in the northern states.
Many of the Tobias' who emigrated to New York appear to have been Jewish although if your line originated in Scotland, they may have been Presbyterian? The Berks Line practiced the "Reformed" faith, a version of Calvinism (also Presbyterian).
As you suggest, other Tobias' came from Espanic and Eastern European backgrounds, many of whom likely practiced Catholicism.

I presume the request for more information re: my g grandfather was directed to me. For what it is worth, here is what I have:

Michael G. Tobias (Jul 31, 1862, Hungary (Austria) - Jan 9, 1908 Mount Carmel, PA married 1888 Julia A. Havirenko [aka Havorak] (Dec 1873, Hungary (Austria) died Allentown, Lehigh County, PA)

His gravestone surname spelling is actually “Tabis” not Tobis as I originally wrote. He immigrated as follows: Michael Tabaka (Departure Date: 27 Feb 1881 Estimated birth year: abt 1857 Age Year: 24 Gender: männlich (Male) Family: Household members Residence: Zemplin, Ungarn Occupation: Arbeiter Ship Name: Cimbria Captain: Ludwig Shipping Line: Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft Ship Type: Dampfschiff Accommodation: Zwischendeck Ship Flag: Deutschland Port of Departure: Hamburg Port of Arrival: New York Volume: 373-7 I, VIII A 1 Band 039 B Page: 155 Microfilm Roll Number: K_1725

He was a coal miner as was my other maternal grandfather in Mt. Carmel, both are buried side by side in St John the Baptist Cemetery in Mt. Carmel, Northumberland County, PA. Mike was naturalized as Michael Tobias applied for naturalization on Oct 2, 1886 in Sunbury, PA. On the Application he is listed as having been born in Austria, is 24 years old, Allegiance is to Francis Joseph Emperor of Austria, emigrated from Hamburg and arrived on these shores on March 31, 1881 and lives in Mt Carmel, PA. His signature is on the papers. Mike received his naturalization citizenship on Aug 25 1894. Witnesses to the civil court proceeding were Louis John Kanski and August Zinski. According to the 1910 Census, Julia immigrated in 1882 and in the 1920 Census 1881.

In 1900, he is naturalized and he and Julia are listed as read, writes, and speaks English. In 1910, he is dead but for their children (all born in Mt.Carmel) their father (Mike now deceased) is listed as Hun/Slovak and their mother, Julia, is listed as Hun/Magyar. Julia herself is listed for both her father and mother as Hun/Magyar. In the 1920 census, Julia’s birthplace is listed as Austria with her children listed as having been born in Pennsylvania and are all listed as mother tongue, German.

This is about all I have been able to uncover over the years. I suspect that Zemplin, in what was then the Austrian Empire, and is now in Slovakia or close by in Hungary, was the starting point for both sides of my maternal ancestors, but I have not been able to establish any ancestry prior to their arrival on these shores. It has been a long search over many years, and I wish I knew more. BTW I have Julia Haverinko/Havorak’s mtDNA.
