Re: Toews family research

Well, well, well, hello Nephew! This is your uncle Dick. We've been doing some research too! We spent some time in Winnipeg and Steinback this past summer. We had decided to go back into the Chinese field but then, unexpectedly, I discovered more details about our family history then I had known. Now we're are planning to move to Steinback when we sell our home. We met a number of relatives while there. Mari's father, brother and sister live in Sprague where Dad had a bakery. My earliest memories of the smell of fresh bread baking are from there. One sister lives in Winnipeg, they work with the Chinese there and another sister and family are pioneering in Sturgeon Falls ON and they all have to pass through Steinback to visit each other. Incidentally when you visit Steinback be sure to visit the Mennonite Heritage Museum - it is fascinating! Besides, there is a large portrait of g/grandfather Cornelius P. hanging there in recognition of his contribution to the events of history. If I can get your emial I can try and send some pictures I took while there. I see another relative, Dianne, contacted you as well, if she wishes I can send the pictures to her too. On the way back we stopped at Virden and I showed Mari your old house, newly painted, and visited your Mom and Dad's grave site. The town has grown from what I remember. Hope this gets to you safely. Write if and when you can.

Our love to you and the family,

Dick and Mari

Karl Metke married Adeline Toews, 21/02/1903, WPG, Manitoba -- this from the Manitoba Vital Stats page. I believe they are the Karl Metka and Lena on the 1906 census. Can anyone help me find more information on this couple and their children?

Thanks.

Dave,
I have the GRANDMA database on my computer. I can send you all the information I have if you like. Would you like my email address so we can correspond off list?

One thing to keep in mind is there are errors in the GRANDMA database and sometimes the sources are not listed.

GRANDMA says that Leonhard Suderman immigrated or arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Strassburg July 2 1878.

Source: Lists of Passengers Arriving at the Port of New York, Volume 1 (January 1875-September 1882). From the Migration From the Russian Empire, Vol 1 Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1995. Glazier, Ira A., editor

This is the address of the GRANDMA site.

http://calmenno.org/grandma/overview.htm

Werner
Re: Anna Toews parents?

Thank you for the information and for the source. I am not familiar with "GRANDMA" so that may be of some real use.

What I know of Anna Toews is some of her decendents, of whom my wife is one.

I believe that she may have been born in Alexanderkrone, Halbstadt, in the Ukraine and she may have married Leonhard Suderman in Samara, Russia. And of course the dates I wrote in my original message. That is my knowledge of her. If you have additional information about her, that would be good to see.

I looked on the LDS database for a Gerhard as a father to Anna and found one. She was listed as born in 1854, so it is close on the date, but not the location. So... we'll see if I can find a resource to track down the mother in this family.

It would be interesting to know the immigration date to connect that with Gerhard's death date to confirm what you wrote about Anna and mother coming over together.

Anyhow, thank you for checking the GRANDMA database. I appreciate it.
Dave

The latest version of the Mennonite Genealogy Database (GRANDMA) states

"She was the daughter of Gerhard Toews. According to her grand-daughter, Hilda (Thiesen) Funk, she came to this county with her widowed mother. One record says she died Aug 1933."

This country probably means the U.S. I checked on Gerhard Toews but there is little information on him and no spouse is listed. Did you want more info on Anna Toews?

Werner Toews

Not sure if you still read this or where you picked up your information. I am the grandson of the Herbert G. Toews who was son of David Toews. His brother Alwin did not marry anyone by last name of 'Butterfield'. He and his wife had only one child by the name of Judy.

Charlene,
I know your posting is 3 years old but I just finished the Toews family tree and was going back through the postings. We are indirectly linked. Anna Toews is also the mother of Anna Kasdorf born 25 January 1766 - died 06 October 1844. Anna was married to Peter Doll (aka Dill aka Doell). Peter Doll aka Doell is my 4X great grandfather ,
Anna Kasdorf obviously was the sister to your Katharina. My connection goes as follows

Isaac Kasdorf 1735 married Anna Toews 1742
their child
Anna Kasdorf married Peter Doll (Doell, Dill)
They had a son
Heinrich Doell born 26 March 1799 died 14 March 1875 married Maria Wiens born 03 Sept 1803 died 31 Aug 1887
Their son
Isaac Doell born 26 Oct 1833 died 1898 married Agatha Lowen born 25 August 1843 died 1920
Their daughter Agatha Doell 21 Aug 1867 died October 1930 married Peter Harms born 03 Sept 1863 died ??
Their daughter Agatha Harms born1886 (my grandmother) married in 1904 Esbrand Toews (my grandfather) born 1882
I hope this helps you. I found very little information on the Doells Peter and Heinrich. Very little on anna Kasdorf and nothing on Maria Wiens. If you have any information on these people would you let me know.

Reg Michel

Dianne wrote:
It is possible we are related, although Toews is a pretty common Mennonite name.

Actually, Trevor and my forefathers were Holdemanners in the sect of the Kleine Gemeinde (little church). I don't believe they ever followed the Mennonite faith even tho Menno and Holdeman were forming their churches at a similar time.

Donna Toews
Indeed Trevor, we are cousins.
You grandfather Edward and mine Cornelius were brothers. Our gg-grandfather (Cornelius P.) was one of the two representatives for the Kleine Gemeinde who came over from Fischau, S. Russia in 1873 to view the land that was offered for settlement by the Canadian govt. His wife was Elizabeth Friesen and they had 2 children. She died in Russia and he remarried; Anna Bartel. She bore 9 more children.

His first son John F. (from Elizabeth) and his wife Sarah were excommunicated from the church for 5 reasons (one was washing his buggy!)

The name Toews, properly pronounced, sounds like Tew-vez. The original spelling was Tows with an umlaut over the 'o'. The Cdn. govt. could not spell it the way it sounded and changed the spelling during the assessment for the first income taxes after WWI. The Taves pronounciation grew within the German speaking community .
The John Sarah line has always pronounced the name "Toes".
Please contact me.... your grandfather was a favourite uncle and your parents are fondly thought about.

I have John's autobiography, our family tree and probably pix of you as a child.
Donna Toews

I am new at this so I may get the order wrong. My records show that David Toews and Elizabeth Sperling had nine children. Alwin Lambert, Johanna, Willard Oscar, Helen Lee, Herbert Gordon, Marian, Arnold, David Donald and Betty Jean. From the Alwin Lamert Toews who married Phosa Mae Butterfield page. The record shows that their children were Elwin, Edwin Alanzo, Charles Leslie (chuck), Lawrence, and Helen Marie Toews. Did Alwin remarry to a Thelma Banks Stivers after Phosa died in 63?

ATT: Jeanette
Thank you for responding so quickly. The member of the Toews family I am actually looking for is Margaret or Margareta.
She married Gerhard Lemky(Lempke, Lemki) in 1900.
Margaret's brothers were....
Abraham, David, Peter and Jacob. I am not sure if these are all the children.
Margaret's father Abram or Abraham was supposedly married to a Friesen girl and they arrived in Canada in 1893 and settled in Morden, Manitoba for awhile then moved to central California and on to Southern California, in Escondido.
According to the source with the above information, Margaret and Gerhard moved back to Saskatchewan. Rumor has it, Margaret died in California but I am not sure of this.
Talk to you soon. Heather

Then moved to USA near Mapleton until 1882 then returned to Rhineland Manitoba. Traced family back to Julius in Russia. Anyone else out there have any more info.
